I didn't binge pick my face for all of June! Album inside.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So this is kind of an update - I posted my skin here 3 months ago and I have kept up with my crazy chart since then and this month - for the first time in 6 months - I did not break down and binge on my face! So I am pretty proud of myself. The pictures included are a bit potato quality. It's nighttime so getting good lighting was near impossible, forgive me. Even with the fuzziness concealing some of my smaller problems you can see there are no major issues. Thanks, r/skincareaddiction! No binging!

For those who've tried different Konjac sponges, what are the differences?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My skin has been extremely flakey lately and honestly I'm not exactly sure why since it hasn't been this bad since the beginning when I was using Epiduo. So I've been using my Konjac sponge from ecotools, but I think I should replace it since I've used it for a few months.Has anyone who's used a few can attest to any differences between the cheap 1 dollar ones and the ten dollar ones and everything in between? Also, should I be using it so often, because I've been using it maybe 2-3 times a day after my flaking gets bad.

Building your own allergy. My skin after daily petroleum (mineral oil) use.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I was getting eye wrinkles from living in a dry cold place so I started washing off my makeup every night with the fragrance free mineral oil. After cleansing I'd then moisturize my eyes with Aquaphor (petroleum). It was going great--so much so that I actually started recommending my routine to people because my eyes looked so healthy and young. But within six months I started getting itchy and red. I cut everything irritating out of my routine. I was left with only mineral oil and that's when I figured out it was the culprit. One morning I woke up with my eye almost swollen shut! Here's a pick of how red and itchy it made my eyes (along with all the cystic acne it gave me).I just want to remind everyone that products can still cause allergies after you patch test! And products that everyone on here seems to love can end up being really bad for you. I hope that one day we have a larger discussion about mineral oil. When I went to the derm, she said that petroleum seemed to wear down my skin barrier.

My skin feels and looks so much better when I stop using products...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Has anyone else experienced this? I never had real bad acne. Just an occasional pimple or two during my cycle. About a year ago,, I started cleansing for the first time, and slowly added items. I would break out like crazy. So I stopped everything, and my skin settled down. Decided to try again with different products. Huge cystic acne came back, to the point where I couldn't even touch my face. I stopped everything again a week ago, and my skin is clearer than it's every been. What's up with this? Should i just not use products? It's really frustrating, as I want healthy skin, but everything seems to damage it.

[Advice] I know it probably sounds silly, but how do you deal with the frustration of uncooperative skin? The stress is seriously affecting my daily life...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone,As the title says, I'm starting to get extremely stressed out during my daily life because of my uncooperative skin. Some weeks my skin is okay (but never great like some of the people here, which also frustrates me), whereas other weeks (such as this week) my skin is terrible to the point of me feeling quite angry with myself.I drink water all the time, I eat healthy food, I wear sunscreen religiously, I never touch my face, and I've tried nearly every routine under the sun. The routine I've settled on is basically one that results in the least irritation-- it's like having to vote but on a daily basis. The worst part is that anytime some of my blemishes fade away, some ridiculous pimple comes out of nowhere and after about a week of going absolutely insane trying not to pop it, I end up popping it and continuing the cycle of blemishes.I realize this post probably comes off as more of a rant than anything and I'll more than likely delete it when I wake up tomorrow, but admittedly I'm finding it really cathartic to write it. My partner is one those people who has absolutely flawless skin no matter what, so she always has a really nonchalant opinion about my skin issues in the realm of "oh it's not that bad, just ignore it". I realize she's trying to mitigate the issue but it's like telling a homeless person money doesn't buy you happiness (obviously not that dramatic, but you get the point).Anyway, honestly at this point I'd just appreciate anyone even sharing their frustration or hopefully how they've learned to overcome it. I'm at a loss as to how I can have flawless skin, and it's to the point where lately I've stopped clicking on the success posts here because it just makes me 100x more frustrated with myself.

Sunscreen and timing question. There are no dumb questions when it comes to taking care of our skin right?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I understand that we are supposed to apply sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before sun exposure but when does the two hour window start for reapplication? Does it start once I got out side or as soon as I put the lotion on? If I apply my morning sunscreen at 7am, does my protection expire at 9 even if I did not go out in the sun yet?

Period Acne.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So, I know a lot about treating my acne after it comes, the disgusting, painful volcano of a zit that pops up 2 hours before I get my period. I've been on birth control since I was 15 (19 now) and it helped a lot of my acne problems. I have generally clear skin, albeit a little combo oily/dry sometimes, when I'm not hormonal. However, without fail, the 4 or 5 chin demons terrorize me for the 5 days I'm shedding my insides.I have a pretty effective system now (tea tree oil zaps them basically in 12-16 hours) but while they're still in their prime, THEY HURT SO BAD! And since they're on my chin/near my mouth, the motion of that part of my face just irritates it more. So, since there's this obvious pattern for me every month, I was wondering if there was some precautionary actions I could take when I know I'm about to get my period. I'm going to talk to my endocrinologist who prescribes me the BC now and see if there's anything, but I'd like to not have to change the dosage/brand of BC I'm on now because it's taken so long to find the right one/right dosage. Should I be pampering my skin with extra attention before shark week, or is this just something inevitable I just have to get used to?Edit: Thank you to whatever mod flaired this for me!

Need helping getting rid of redness around the face - One not caused by rosacea, harsh skincare, but is rather 'genetic'.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys,Has anyone had any luck with calming down redness of the skin that doesn't really have a cause, versus "it's just the way your skin is"?My skin is red around the cheeks, chin, and tzone.I've been to a dermatologist, who's ruled out rosacea. I've tried out different routines over the years, from mild to harsher, with no effect on redness. Can anyone suggest good products to try on this? [Pics]This is what a change in diet did to my skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Last year I decided to change up my diet because I was really fat. Found /r/keto, looked up the science and jumped in.Turns out, besides the weight loss, it had a nice extra benefit I didn't knew about. Before and AfterFor some reason, puberty was still hitting me like a truck, even though I was 29 at the time.I still get 1-2 zits a month, but they are usually really tiny. As you can see in my "before" pic, I used to have a bit more than that. They are now very superficial, they dont bleed when popped. 1 hour later, you won't even realise there was a zit there. Also, I used to get these big monsters on my shoulders - a few millimeters in diameter. Really relieved those are gone, they hurt like hell.Turns out, cutting out the carbs is a nice way of cleaning up your skin. Wish I knew this in highschool.

Product Review: Shiseido Creamy Cleansing Emulsion

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I stopped in my local Marshalls where I always get my shampoo and conditioner (seriously, great brands for half the price.. why not?!) and saw a section of Shiseido things. I saw this creamy cleansing emulsion and wasn't sure how it was. Tried scrambling to find some reviews on here or r/makeupadditon, but came up pretty empty handed. I grabbed a bottle for $19 (marked down from $35) and let me just say.. I'm in love.I have been using oils to remove my makeup prior to cleansing and I just don't really love them (specifically the feeling) on my eyes and on my skin. I started just using a makeup removing cleanser first - Neutrogena Naturals makeup cleanser and while it works really good, I do still have to rub my eyes with a washcloth which irritates them and causes some eyelashes to fall out sometimes. This Creamy Emulsion says to rub on and wipe off with a tissue or wet cloth. I was really worried it would feel like it was just sitting on my face if I only used a tissue to wipe off, and honestly, I fully expected to have to scrub into my eyes with a washcloth to get off all my eye makeup. This stuff is incredible. You pump it onto your hands, gently massage into your face and over your eyes and the makeup immediately lets go. You don't need to scrub or be rough. You don't have to use a ton. I have really sensitive eyes and I full expected this to burn or cause irritation and it didn't. I have been using this every day for two weeks. I take off my makeup when I first get home after work and can wait until later in the evening to wash it after. It's not a makeup remover that you feel like you need to wash your face RIGHT after to get all the greasyness off.The only two things I don't care for are:the packaging - it's very ugly and the cap on mine doesn't really stay on wellthe smell - it reminds me of something my grandmother would wear. The smell is pretty strong and very old lady like. I haven't noticed the smell lingering once it's wiped off though which is probably the only reason I can still stand it.Great product especially if you can find it at a discounted price.

Moisture Mask

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am really happy with my skincare routine! I use the Aztec Clay mask (ACV, nighttime) maybe twice a week, three times if I need to, but I always use an overnight hydrating mask after I take it off and rinse my face. I currently use the Origins Drink Up Intensive overnight mask. I am generally really happy with it, but I was wondering if there was something else out there just as great? I have tried the Clinique one and it just didn't cut it for me. Is Cerave in the Tub more like a mask, or a really hydrating cream? I like to specifically use a mask because it sinks in, but also seals in moisture.

Breakout at the beach?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
As a wildlife biologist who works out in the field during the summer, I'm not your typical SCA-er who is able to stay out of the sun. Normally I have minimal issues (I've learned how curb breakouts from humidity, sunscreen, sweat...you name it) in the field. Last weekend I was outside in the direct sun for a very long time kayaking (i.e., getting very sweaty) and going into the ocean (not normal for my job - I was on vacation). Afterwards, I noticed a horrible breakout in my T-zone and extending down where the apple of my cheeks meets my nose on either side. Tiny whiteheads ensued, and dips into the ocean afterwards burned. This was 4 days ago, and I'm still getting tiny little whiteheads in the same area every morning though my BHA seems to help with the redness/swelling. What gives? I grew up on the coast and am in no way a stranger to salt water, humidity, and sweat. My skincare routine: Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA has been my godsend paired with Cerave cleanser and moisturizer. I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen on my face.

How do you treat hormonal breakouts?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
For some introduction, I have combo to oily skin that had generally been fairly clear for at least a year now, as I've been following the same routine, and it works well for me.Recently (probably a little over a week ago), I started to break out more than usual around my mouth and on my chin, cheeks, and jawline. I had changed nothing about my routine, but had recently fallen asleep with makeup on a few nights in a row (I know, bad) and thought maybe it was that, even though that usually doesn't cause too much havoc.I'm currently not on any birth control in order to complete blood work for egg donation, and although I've completed two other cycles off the birth control with no such problem, I kind of assume this is hormonal. The breakouts continued and got worse, so I decided to buy some Panoxyl, which is a 10% BP cleanser. I've used it five days in a row now (started my period day three of the Panoxyl), and I think I went too hard with it. I haven't been leaving it on for minutes at a time, but it predictably made my skin a little sensitive, and a lot dry, especially in my chin and around my mouth. I've used BP products in the past successfully, but my current routine is quite gentle, so I feel that maybe I went too hard on my skin. The worst part of all this? I still have an active breakout, on top of my now angry, flaky skin!Any advice on how to help mend it? Should I continue to use the Panoxyl, or only when bad breakouts occur? Is there a better way to treat hormonal breakouts?

I've read the routine but I don't know how to start. I'm broke, I can't afford an expensive product...Everyday I wash my face with just water or dr. Bonners soap and then use witch hazel. I was moisturizing with sesame seed oil for a while but I always ended up oily.I don't know how to submit a picture, otherwise I would. I have combination skin bit I don't know my acne type. I'll take any suggestions I can.TL;DR: I'm pregnant, broke, and have awful skin. Help?

Male here looking for more confidence! Long-term BP 10% use.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey all! I've spent the last few days perusing the subreddit, but I was hoping to get some more individualized responses. I'm a 20 something male with what I would consider T-Zone skin (Oily forehead/nose, dry cheeks). For the longest time, I've been using benzoyl peroxide and moisturizing with cetaphil lotion. Generally, I wash my face twice a day with BP 10% and apply the lotion afterwards. However, I feel like my skin has been looking worse and worse lately. Especially during the Summer months. It's red, blotchy, and oily. I generally only have a few small zits, so that really isn't my issue. Furthermore, I have sebaceous filaments that I find to be fairly noticeable on my nose. My face keeps a constant sheen to it in the Summer, and I think the problem lies with the over-usage of BP 10%. Any thoughts/advice/etc?

Acne around chin and lower corners of mouth seems to come in waves?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've noticed that sometimes my face will clear up for 2-3 weeks and no pimples will form at all, but then boom, randomly one after the other they start coming back around my chin and below the corner of my mouth. Does anyone know why it could be coming in waves? The rest of my face is pretty clear. I drink a lot of water and this has seemed to help but I'm not sure makes it come in waves, could it be diet? Thanks a lot!

Some progress pics so far from using Acne.org regimen

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just wanted to show some progress pics with you guys. Sorry for potato quality. I have a crappy camera on my phone, but there are definitely still some bumps/comedones that you can't see near my chin on the most recent pics. Right now I'm into my third week of the Acne.org regimen. It's really hard to see a whole lot of progress so soon in the regimen, but through pictures it's easier to see than with my own eyes. This is definitely something you have to be patient with, and I do get discouraged sometimes, but clear skin doesn't happen over night. I've had this hormonal acne for over two years now and I guess a couple months isn't that much longer to wait. Hope you guys enjoy.Acne progress so far

What is the biggest skin sin you have committed?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Besides tanning? For me it has to be picking. Have tried to stop so many times but whenever a bump is there for longer than a week I convince myself it is an ingrown hair or blackhead that needs removal and sometimes it is but most of the time I turn a barely noticeable bump into a red volcano

I was doing OCM wrong!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Nobody else can understand how excited I am about this! I thought you were supposed to wet your face down and then apply the oil. I was a bit disappointed because I never got any grits or anything, but I still liked the overall effect. Well, I stopped by a thread about OCM by chance and it turns out you're supposed to use the oil on a DRY face... dur. It worked so much better! Tiny white grits were falling out left and right! It was gross, but so satisfying too. Ahhh I'm so happy about something so little! That is all.

How to treat blackheads right against lips?

So I have these blackheads and large pores all along the edge of my lips, and I know that the lips have too thin skin to treat with BHA/AHA/probably everything else strong. OILY SKIN: The only thing I have found to work.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
For my entire life, I have had extremely oily skin. To the point where NOTHING has worked to decrease or even help it at all. I have tried everything. Every facial cleanser, every type of foundation, every secret trick (milk of magnesia, blotting sheets, etc.). EVERYTHING. I love makeup but it was hard to wear any because of how bad the oil was. I was losing hope, researching for hours online every day and not being able to find anything that worked. Until I was at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago and came across this product. I thought I would give it product a try before I gave up for good. I hadn't read anything on it, so it was a shot in the dark...Shower to Shower: SPORT Absorbent Body PowderIt read on the label, "time released to keep you fresh," so I thought maybe it would absorb the oil on my skin as it was seeping through my makeup throughout the day? Well I gave it a try and BOOM! It worked like a charm! It may seem excessive, but I apply it with a powder brush in between all my makeup applications (moisturizer, concealer, foundation, etc.) and it keeps my makeup on all day when the oil used to cause it to drip off into a disgusting mess. This has seriously helped me SO much and I wanted to post it on here in hopes that it would help other people as well!

What do you do to mend your skin after a picking/scratching session?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I pick on my skin a lot, which is probably the biggest issue to why my skin looks bad at times. Of course the best thing would be to not touch your face, which I'm working really hard on but sometimes I do it without noticing. And then you feel this horrible stinging feeling on your face and everything just feels shit. So I felt like creating a thread for tips on how to mend/calm your face after a picking session! The only thing I do is to put hydrocolloid bandages on especially bad zits I've picked (helps a lot) but I was thinking if someone have more of a mask of sorts for the whole face?

I understand this is /r/skincareaddiction (so cue the products), but what about nutrition?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have been a long time lurker of this sub, and honestly I'm a little disheartened at the lack of education around here about some basic nutritional approaches to treating skincare problems. Many of the skincare problems we all face can be attributed to hormonal or nutritional phenomena, so why not address those issues FIRST before heading down the antibiotic, chemical, and product route?Maybe this is just frustrating to me, having seen some vast improvements in my own skin complexion by simply changing my diet and supplementing a little. I tried for years with creams, scrubs, exfoliants, whatever, and never had the least bit of success compared to eating a whole foods diet (and in my case, restoring my zinc deficiency, which can be a major cause of acne). I do still use very few products (mostly just my CeraVe foaming face wash), but have since moved away from products in favor of letting my body handle it from the inside out. Sorry for the rant, and wishing you all the best in skin and skin health :)

Interesting archived acne.org post on pH

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Archived topic here. Relevant post copied below.More info on pH, compiled by tangal (former poster at the Diana Yvonne Skin Care Board) and edited by me (LionQueen on acne.org) (this is a work in progress, and I am still checking some facts. If you spot any problems, don't hesitate to PM me).The initials pH stand for "Power of Hydrogen" or "Potential of Hydrogen." Both terms are correct. This is a measure of the hydrogen ion content in a solution. The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a product is, compared to pure distilled water (which is pH 7.0). Only wet substances have a measurable pH. The skin's pH is actually the pH on the skins surface from the moisture within the skin, and the "acid mantle" which is part of the protective "barrier" on its surface. Hair for example has no pH.The acid mantle is a fine film layer, slightly acidic, made up from skin oils, sweat, and dead cells. It is one means the skin uses to protect itself from bacteria, moisture loss, and environmental damage. Pollutants, harmful bacterium, contaminants are normally alkaline in nature, so a slightly acid skin surface helps fight off these harmful elements and prevent them from entering into, and damaging the skin. Maintaining the acid mantle is recommended for good skin health. When the acid mantle is damaged it takes approximately 14-17 hours to repair itself (assuming no other damaging products are applied to it).A damaged acid mantle leads to a number of skin issues, such as over dry skin, dehydration, over oily skin, flaky skin, acne, sensitivity, etc. It would require another long post to detail all this. But incorrect pH products can contribute to acid mantle degradation, and increases in acne-causing bacteria on the skin. (More on this below)The pH ScaleThe pH scale goes from 0-14. This covers most wet substances, and certainly all skincare products.-Acids have pH values under 7 - they are more acidic then water (acid)-Alkalis have pH values over 7 - they are more alkaline then water (base)-If a substance has a pH value of 7 - it is neutral, like water (neither acid nor base)The difference between each whole-value pH level represents a tenfold change. (For example, a cleanser with a pH of 6 is ten times more alkaline than a cleanser with a pH of 5, and a cleanser with a pH of 7 is 100 times more alkaline then one of 5.) Because of this, only a few units of pH can make a big difference in how your skin reacts to a product. Some pH examples:pH 1 = Battery acidpH 1.5 -2 = gastric (stomach) acidpH 2 = lemon juicepH 2.5 = cola soft drinkspH 3 = vinegarph 3.5 = orange juicepH 4.6-5.5 = healthy skin (and recommended pH range for your cleanser, for best skin health)pH 5.5 = rainwater (pure water, when exposed to the atmosphere, will take in carbon dioxide, changing its pH)pH 6.5 = milkpH 6.5 - 7.4 = healthy salivapH 7 = pure distilled water - (This is neutral pH, neither acid nor base)pH 7.35 - 7.45 = human bloodpH 8.5 = baking soda (damaging to skin's acid mantle)pH 9 = seawaterpH 9.0-10.0 = hand soap, detergents (very damaging to acid mantle)pH 10.5 = Milk of MagnesiapH 11.5 = household ammoniapH 12.5 = household bleachpH 13 = lye (sodium hydroxide, or Draino)(Alkaline or Base extreme)Skin and the Acid MantleNewborn baby skin has a neutral pH of 7. Within a few months it adjusts to a more "normal" pH of 4.5 to 5.5, enabling it to be more resistant to bacteria.Adult skin is normally slightly acidic, a range of 4.5 to 5.5. Different body areas can differ in pH, and disease and acid mantle damage can alter pH. But the preferred range for facial skin pH is 4.5 to 5.5.Those with skin disease, skin problems, and stressed skin usually have a skin pH over 6.0. Aged, stressed and damaged skin have more difficulty maintaining a "correct" pH.As skin pH is elevated closer to pH 7.0, it becomes less and less able to function optimally and to kill bacteria. This allows acne-causing bacteria to multiply rapidly on the skin's surface. (Acne bacteria are found on everyone's skin, even if you never have a pimple in your life.) The damaged skin is unable to fend off the excess bacteria, and they multiply rapidly. Bacteria growth is very slow at pH of 5.5 or less, but a slight shift upward, toward the alkaline levels, causes a marked increase in the reproduction and lifespan of acne-causing bacteria. So if your skin is at a higher pH (anything over 6, as damaged skin often is) the acne-causing bacteria can multiply much easier and faster -- often faster then your skin can handle. Skin pH is one main contributor to acne.Skin pH also has an effect on how easily irritated your skin is, how well it ages, and how it deals with product and environmental stress. This is why it is recommended that you cleanse skin with mild, non-irritating products, as close to the skin's natural pH as possible. Many commercial cleansers are highly alkaline, which also changes the skin's pH to alkaline levels on the skin surface, for a short time. Many alkaline cleansers are in the same pH range as baking soda, and some are nearly as high as ammonia. This is very harsh on the skin, and can lead to increased irritation, acne, moisture loss, skin aging etc. As pimples erupt, the skin is less able to heal itself, or the damage that pimples leave behind. If a product has a high pH and a considerable percentage of a strong detergent such as sodium lauryl sulfate, or irritant like peppermint oil or menthol, because of the pH destructive activity on the acid mantle, the detergent can contribute to even more damage then it would if the product pH was closer to 5.5. It literally takes a split second for an alkaline product to degrade the skin barrier enough for an irritant or damaging detergent to penetrate. Some people can handle this better then others, but long term daily use on the skin can contribute to long term issues on all skin types. As skin ages, or the barrier function degrades, it has more difficultly dealing with this type of stress.Even when the skin re-adjusts to its more normal pH (4.5 to 5.5) - it is already damaged, irritated and stressed. The damage recovery involves longer term healing; 14 to 17 days for acid mantle repair. Continued long-term damage, stress, and mild irritation can prevent the skin from maintaining its best pH level of 4.5 to 5.5. With time, and increased damage, it may tend to stay at the 6 range or higher. As skin become healthier, its pH values lower, and acne growth also lowers. The skin becomes more "normal" and regulated.Listing of pH of many common cleansers:http://www.dianayvonne...A few examples from above link:Burt's Bees Tomato, Carrot, and Lettuce soaps 10Dial Soap (liquid and bar) 9.5Dove Bar, Baby Dove Bar 7Johnson & Johnson Head to Toe Baby Wash 6.5-7.0Neutrogena Facial Cleansing Bar Original Formula 8.7-9.2Paula's Choice (all formulations) 5.5A product may include the term "pH Balanced" on the label. This does NOT mean that it has an optimal pH of 5.5. The term has no legal definition. Some products are a good pH, but high in irritants. Which is better than high pH and high irritants, but not great either.A good cleanser cleans the skin without breaking down the acid mantle, or adding irritants to the skin. It is mild with a 5.5 or lower pH.Exfoliating Power of AHAs and BHAsThe acids commonly used in skin care treatment (AHAs, BHAs,TCA) are all pH dependent. The lower the pH, the more effective the acid is on the skin. It will work better, penetrate better and deeper, with a more concentrated effect. It can also be more irritating, because it is more "powerful."When an acid product is formulated with a pH below 2.0, all of its acid percentage is essentially "free" or available to work effectively on the skin. For example:A 20% lactic acid product at a pH of 1.9 has 20% of the lactic acid "free" or available to work on your skin. This is referred to as the "Free Acid Value" or FAV.As pH is raised closer to 7.0, less acid is free and the acid's effectiveness is weakened. So for a true understanding of the strength of your acid product, you need to know the acid percentage in the product, AND the pH.AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, malic, citric, tartaric, etc.) are basically ineffective over 4.0 pH. To exfoliate the surface of the skin, the pH must be below 4.0. and the product percentage must be over 5%. 5% to 8% with a pH of 3.0 - 4.0 is the MINIMUM level for a daily use AHA; this will not treat scars or rebuild collagen.BHAs (salicylic acid) are also basically ineffective over 4.0 pH. To exfoliate the skin, and unclog pores, the pH must be below 4.0 and the product percentage must be over 1%. (1% to 2% with a pH of 3.0 - 4.0 is the MINIMUM level for a daily use BHA. Skin with very clogged pores may need a higher concentration, up to 5%, and lower pH.A pH test strip or litmus strip will give you the pH. (buy some made with a lower pH range, not all strips go from 1 - 14) Strips will not be as accurate as a true electronic pH gage, but for home use it will be close enough. Here is the link to Diana Yvonne's page on FAV and skin remodeling results:http://dianayvonne.z...y/16.aboutpeelsThis shows two charts. The first chart covers the FAV available, and the amount of acid percent needed for specific skin effects (exfoliation, collagen rebuilding, skin lightening, etc.).For example: a 10% (free acid value) glycolic acid (AHA) gives "Significant increase in squamous cell turnover. Moderate increase in collagen deposition." In other words, 10% concentration of AHA acid working on the skin is enough to remove damaged cells, and rebuild skin collagen or firmness. The second chart clarifies how the pH affects the amount of acid available for the skin to use (FAV).For example, the three 20% entries:20% AHA at a pH of 2.55 has a free acid value (FAV) of 18.6%. (It's only REALLY an 18.6% product in effectiveness, because of the pH over 2.0.)20% at pH 3.4 drops to 14.6% FAV.20% at pH 4.3 drops to 4.8% FAV.When a 20% AHA product has a pH over 3 it has lost approximately 25% of its exfoliation activity. Once pH reaches 4.0, it loses 75% of its exfoliation activity. This is why so many commercial products are ineffective!BHAs are effective at slightly different ranges, so the FAV scale differs a bit, but the principle is similar.Skin Biology Exfol serum (2% BHA with a 3.2 pH) and Paula's Choice 2% BHA (3.4 pH) are very similar products, and strengths. Professional Solutions 2% BHA has a pH of 1.9% so is actually much more active on the skin then either Exfol or Paula's Choice, even at the same acid percentage.Layering Products and Wait TimespH affects the acid you use and how it works. Another consideration is not to disturb an acid while it is on your skin, which can alter pH and affect its action on the skin.Generally speaking an acid is effective for approximately 20 to 30 minutes on the skin surface. After that point the skin pH has risen enough to lessen the exfoliation action on the skin, and the acid is effectively neutralized. During this 30 minute time frame, the acid is working at effective levels. Anything applied after 30 minutes will not hamper the effect of your acid, as the pH has already changed, and the acid action has slowed a lot.Acids that are a high (peel) percentage such as 30% and 40% and above are more concentrated. Therefore their activity can continue for longer, so their action should be stopped at appropriate time with the use of a base rinse (baking soda and water) or a mild detergent cleanser. This will effectively halt the exfoliation action, by raising the skin pH.Washing the skin with an cleanser of pH over 5.5 can slow or lessen the effect of your acid, because the acid must now deal with the high pH level on the skin. The bigger the range difference, the more this will affect your acid action, especially in the case of acids at 2.0 pH or less. So if you use a high pH cleanser, you should wait 30 minutes before using a pH-dependent product, to allow the skin to regulate its pH down to about 5.5. Or you can use an acidic toner to adjust the pH of the skin down before applying the product. Most commercial astringents and toners contain high levels of irritants such as alcohols, Witch Hazel, Menthols, Mint oils, etc. These should be avoided, as they can damage the skin barrier. If you want to use a toner to adjust pH to lower levels, either use a liquid acid like Paula's Choice BHA or AHA liquid first, or a very dilute mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar and distilled water. Vivant's Mandelic Acid toner is another good option, though it is expensive. The best option is simply to use a cleanser with a pH of 5.5.If you use a BHA product with 3.2 pH, then immediately apply a treatment product on top with 6.5 pH, the exfoliation action of your BHA is reduced by 75%. So applying a higher pH to your pH dependent acid will neutralize it sooner, or stop its action at the point you added the higher pH product.Other products are also pH dependent. L-Ascorbic Acid forms of Vitamin C are pH dependent. For good stability and effective action, a good Ascorbic acid product is about 2.0 pH. Since Vitamin C absorbs faster into the skin, you can generally have a shorter wait of about 10 to 15 minutes. Some Good General Rules(This info comes from DebbieNIR, former host of the Diana Yvonne Skin Care Board. The original post is now gone.)Use a mild, non-irritating, detergent-free cleanser with a 5.5 pH or lower. If your cleanser pH is higher then 5.5, wait 15 to 30 minutes after cleansing to use a low pH AHA or BHA. (Or use a toner to acidify the skin first.)Acids should be applied to freshly cleansed skin. Both acid percentage and product pH must be used to factor total effective acid amounts. (FAV)If using AHA and BHA together, always apply AHA first (after cleansing) UNLESS the BHA solution pH is equal to or lower than your AHA. In this case, apply the BHA first, because it penetrates skin oils better, and will enhance the AHA effectiveness.Acids can be used in many different ways - which affect wait times.a) If a 2% or 5% BHA product is used, and rinsed off, WAIT until it is rinsed off to proceed with other products. (BHA washes are less effective than leave-on products.)b) If a 2% or 5% BHA product is applied and left on the skin, but no AHA product is following, wait 30 minutes before applying next product. This allows the BHA to work at its most effective, and exfoliate at optimal levels.c) If a 2% or 5% BHA is applied and left on the skin before a rinse-off AHA, you do not need to wait to apply the AHA – IF the pH of both products is similar and compatible. If you rinse the AHA off after 5 minutes of application (over the BHA) you have also stopped the BHA action at 5 minutes. Both should have a lower effective pH. If the AHA has a higher pH, it will also raise the pH of the BHA, affecting its action also.d) If a 2% or 5% BHA is being left on the skin, before a leave on AHA, you don't need to wait to apply the AHA. Apply BHA, then AHA, then wait a total of 30 minutes with both products layered, then proceed to next product application. (This is assuming that both acids have a low pH.)e) Do not apply a higher pH BHA before a lower pH AHA. The higher pH product will hinder the lower pH product. Wait 30 minutes between both acids, applying the lowest pH first.f) If using a higher BHA after a lower AHA product, apply lower pH AHA first. Wait 30 minutes for it to work. Then apply higher pH BHA on top, and wait 30 minutes for the BHA to work. Then apply other products on top.g) If you need to rinse products off sooner then 30 minutes to shorten activity and lessen irritation, you can rinse with water, before proceeding to the next step. If using a high strength AHA or BHA, at strong "professional" peel level strength, you will neutralize product with baking soda and water, and rinse off before proceeding to your next step.h) Apply low pH before high pH.Layering Other ProductsThis information is also from DebbieNIR's posts on the Diana Yvonne Skin Care Board.Retinols, Retinoids, Vitamin A products These products are often pH dependent. Apply to clean dry skin, once to twice a day. Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes before adding other active products. In the case of retinols, retinyls, and retinals, wait at least 30 and preferably 45 minutes to allow the active ingredient to convert to retinoic acid within your skin.DCX: This is an eye treatment product with soy. It is not an exfoliate. Should be applied to clean skin, once or twice a day. Apply after acids and cleansers, before copper and other treatments. Wait 10 minutes to allow it to absorb. Then apply other products.DMAE: Can be used after acids and cleansing. Formulation type can dictate placement. Liquids, gels and serums can be applied before CP serums, lotions and creams. Lotion and cream DMAE should be applied after CP serums and creams. Wait 10 minutes to allow product to absorb.Product Application by TypeThis is a rough guide for product application, based on type/absorbency. This is for products that are not pH dependent, nor limited by activity type. The thickness of a product, dictates its placement. You cannot apply a thin product (like a liquid) over a thick product (like a cream) and expect it to absorb well. The cream can be a barrier to the thinner product.-Cleanser-Toner (pH-adjusting product in a liquid, watery form)-Exfoliant (AHA or BHA, usually requires a wait time)-Serum (Copper Serum, treatment Serums, DMAE thicker products)-Gel (DMAE, Green Cream, Differin)-Oils (Emu, Jojoba, Almond, etc)-Creams-Sunscreen-Foundations

is my skin bad enough to opt for laser treatment?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi guys! This is my first time posting on this subreddit. I've been wondering whether I should go for laser treatment to cure my skin or should I just continue to wait patiently for my skin to heal?I had very bad breakouts 2 years ago and im left with the scars and redness from them now. Attached below is my skin condition right now, is it bad enough to opt for laser treatment? (might have to convince my mum)What should I do to let my scars heal and to let the redness fade away? I'm a 17 year old male student and I dont have much money to spend on skincare products and my mum doesn't want to waste money on them either. So if possible, something cheap or a home remedy would be greatly appreciated!http://imgur.com/a/XErMLThanks for your time!

This all started about a year ago and my life has been hell ever since. At first, I noticed my nose was getting wet. I thought it was sweat (it was summer) but when I touched it, it felt different. Not as watery, but a tad sticky, oily. I didn't give it much thought at first but it slowly started to become an obsession. It started with my nose, then my forehead, then the area under my eyes and eventually my entire face, cheeks included. Everything gets oily. I can see it. I can feel it. It makes me feel dirty. When I take a shower, it only takes two or three hours to become oily again. I used to wash my face with water every three hours but that only made it worse. Nowadays, I go to the toilet at work and just rub my face with some paper used to dry ones hands. Do this evrry few hours.I honestly don't know what to do. It has gotten to a point where I watch other peoples faces because none of them are oily like me. I'm jealous. When I wake up, my pillow and hair feel oily. I don't have enough pillow cases to replace it daily. To make matters worse, a few months ago tiny bumps mixed with a pimple here and there started to appear on my forehead. Popped a few. Shouldn't have. Looks like a minefield now. Worried it will stay like this.Might sound stupid, but all of this together makes me feel depressed and gives me daily anxiety.

Hi! We're a group of Canadian medical students interested in skincare knowledge translation. We made our first video for you. [Diet and Acne]. Enjoy!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi! Dom here. I'm a final-year Canadian medical student, among a few of my friends who are interested in pursuing extra training in skin science / dermatology after graduating. You might remember my post a few weeks ago about a skincare myths video blog. There is so much nonsense floating around the pop media about skin... We decided to do something about it.Well, here's our first attempt at battling that nonsense with some good science!DermGeeks - Myth 1 - Diet and Acne - TRUEIt turns out that there are two specific things that we KNOW likely contribute to acne.https://youtu.be/vwEDyMo8heMWe're hoping to tackle a new myth or popular topic every week in a concise 1-2 minute video.FAQDom, why is your group's video so amateur? We decided not to accept any industry funding for these. We're making them for free with no funding for tech support etc, just medical student blood, sweat, and tears. We can do medicine and research... But acting? Filming? Video editing? We're working on it.What's your goal? Our goal is straightforward. To tackle the ridiculous claims about skin health spouted by the pop media and pop bloggers. All of our content is driven by medical students but curated by the finest dermatologists in the country. How can I help? Like, comment, share! In the comments of the youtube video, post topics you'd like to see for our next videos. Finally, if you're a professional or med student interested in collaborating, message me. We're based out of Hamilton, Toronto, and the GTA.Thanks for your support!

Moisturizing sunscreen with no white cast?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
so right now, i've been using Cinique's DDML as a moisturizer and following up with Neutrogena's Pure & Free Liquid Sunscreen, then finally finishing with some make up just to cover up the white cast :(I've been doing this for about 3 weeks now, but I feel that this routine has been too heavy for my face.Today, I read on the sidebar that people with darker complexions should opt out of SS with Zinc Oxide in them to avoid the white cast, but unfortunately, the Neutrogena SS has zinc oxide in it..Besides all this, I was wondering, if there's a type of SS that doubles as a moisturizer, and that's affordable as well? Anything below $30 USD would be ideal for me.I just don't want to put so much on my face, and avoid putting make up on just to hide the white cast. My skin type (if it matters) varies from normal to combination-oily.You're recommendations would be much appreciated!

Question about Mario Badescu

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone this is my first time posting! Background on my skin is that I have cystic acne, I have very oily skin but all my acne seems to flake on the surface but it never really seems to heal. My cystic acne spots range from the size of green peas to the size of dimes, they are all very angry looking and they don't really go down in size, they just sink deeper into my skin. I have been on tetracycline for about 6 months and haven't really noticed a change. After hearing really great things about Mario Badescu I went to my local Ulta to check it out. The sales associate recommenced the A.H.A. Botanical Body soap to use on my face. I'm just wondering if it's okay to use on my face like she said or if it will only make my skin dry and scaly without helping the large angry cysts. And if anyone has any recommendation, tips or tricks for dealing with cystic acne it would be so very appreciated!

Hyaluronic acid drying my skin out?!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I got back from a vacation a few weeks ago at a very high elevation, which, coupled with the hard water, pretty much wrecked my skin and totally dried me out. So I got home and bought Neutrogena HydroBoost water gel moisturizer in hopes that the hyaluronic acid would help my skin get back on track. But I feel like it's doing the opposite of what it's intended for. My skin doesn't feel moisturizer enough and looks a little dull. Is there any reason this might be happening?! I kind of expected a very different result:(

YAAAS I can finally join the grit club!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Really unexciting pic because I know you guys will want to see.All my grits were the hard to see yellowish tiny grain kind, and you can basically only see them because they were coloured by the hemp seed oil. They are the little green specs, and there were a lot more than what's in the picture. You GUYS. I've never gotten grits before EVER. I've done OCM for a long time, I've used BHAs and AHAs for months. I've tried massaging longer, I've tried letting the oil sit but I never got anything. But today my Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque came in and I just had to slather it on, even though I'm patch testing other things >.>... It was soooo satisfying though so worth it.This is the method I put together after seeing similar posts on this sub:Remove makeup with hemp seed oil. Wipe off with damp cotton rounds.Cleanse with CeraVe foaming. Pat face dry.QHMJM all over everything. Let dry for 15 mins.Rinse off well with warm water and hands. Pat face dry.Apply BHA: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment. Wait 15 mins.More hemp seed oil! Let it sit for about 20 mins while it dripped down my neck and got in my mouth.Massage time! I went against the grain of my skin, so starting around the edges and massaged inwards. And just like that. sooo much crud came out. I got a lot coming out from the edges of my face, temples, jawline, and also the tops of my cheekbones and right in my nasal creases. It was awesome. They just kept popping out and I had to stop massaging after like 15 mins. Then I washed the oil off with CeraVe foaming again and now I'm all ready for my Vit C goodness! Thanks SCA! I will always love this sub for the gross/awesome places it will take me.

If you nice folks wouldn't mind giving my routine a once over, that'd be great.AM: Wash with african black soap, moisturize with ponds rejuveness, apply Biore Watery Essence SPF 50PM: Wash with Cerave foaming cleanser, exfoliate with Stridex (wait a minute) and Nip + Fab GA wipes, wait 20 minutes (I've been using white strips on my teeth while I wait! great use of time), spot treat with 10% benzoyl peroxide and alpha hydrox spot light, moisturize with ponds rejuveness.

Question about Tea Tree Oil products

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been looking into the Tea Tree oil line at the Bodyshop. I have mild acne that I've kept tamed with Benzoyl peroxide but spot treatments are a bit hit or miss and I want to transition to something I can apply on my whole face (BP seems a bit too harsh for that). My main concern is that all these products are stored in plastic bottles and I've heard sources claim that tea tree oil oxidizes with plastic and can become detrimental to the skin. There isn't a lot of information out there about tea tree oil but from what I've heard 100% pure tea tree oil will dissolve plastic.Does anyone know if it's safe to store tea oil products in plastic containers if it isn't a 100% pure solution?

Should I blame the product, or blame my face?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
When it comes to using a new product, (whether I'm patch-testing or using it regularly) I never really know if it's the product itself that's breaking me out, or if it's just my skin continuing to be horrible. I'd hate to stop using a good product just because I thought it was causing acne, when really the acne was going to surface no matter what I put on my face. On the other hand, I don't want to just assume my face is a spotty piece of crap and keep using something that's breaking me out!

I need a pep talk...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi! I'm in desperate need of a pep talk about my skin. I think that I'm becoming unhealthily attached to maintaining my skin's appearance. A lot of this has to do with the fact that I'm a swim instructor, and will be out in the sun and pool for most of the day, 6 days a week. I work around 30 hours a week in the blazing sun. I wear a big hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen every 30 minutes. When I'm on duty I mostly wear a t-shirt and shorts, and try to cover my legs with a towel when I'm lifeguarding. I don't know if its the chlorine in the pool, or the stress I've been under lately, but I have full-body hives and my hair is drying up and falling out. I have super sensitive skin that takes a lot of looking after, but I'm seriously upset every day when I come home from work. I cry in the shower because I've gotten so much sun. I've been upset for days thinking about it. I'm 21 years old, and I'm seriously scared of burning or tanning from the sun. I don't have acne, but I have PIH that I'm trying to fade with sunscreen and Vitamin C. Quitting my job really isn't an option. Does anyone have advice on how I can stop obsessing over my appearance? Anyone struggle with the same thing?

Cyproterone Acetate--- Any information/experiences with this drug for acne?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had PCOS for a number of years. Birth control helped with my acne, but caused other unwanted side effects. . .so much so that I have gone off it about 3 times. Each time, I regret it, because my skin basically flips out from the chest up, and my face is like an oil slick.Anyway, I went to the gynecologist today to discuss alternative options, and I asked him if I could try Spironolactone instead. I've heard good things on here and from a number of people in real life. I live in Germany, and unfortunately, this doctor informed me that they are not allowed to prescribe Spironolactone for the purpose of acne/hirsutism treatment here. Why, I have no idea. . .He then suggested Cyproterone Acetate. I've read a little about it, and I don't particularly like what I am reading. It can apparently cause Osteoporosis with long-term use and you need to have your liver checked periodically. It also says that it lowers estrogen and raises prolactin as well. . .none of which sounds good to me.Does anyone have experience using this medication? Was it successful for you? Were there any long-term side effects or side effects that were particularly bothersome?Really just wish I could go on Spiro. . .

What would you buy with $85 in points at your drug store?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have accumulated a significant amount of money to Shoppers' Drug Mart (Canadian chain) in points, and I think it's time to spend it. I'm pretty new at this, so the only SCA recommended type things I have so far are Cerave foaming cleanser (and Cerave in the tub, but it breaks me out), and Oxy pads (exactly like Stridex but with alcohol, which doesn't bother my skin).I'm thinking of getting an AHA serum because I really liked the effects of an AHA mask I tried, and maybe mineral oil for OCM, and hydrocolloid bandages for the occasional pimple (although I've never seen them, do they have another name? The only treated bandages I've seen are Polysporin or silver).I'm also going to get some fun stuff like mineral makeup and fancy hair treatments etc, but I'm wondering what you all would get!

On OCM

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I was at Sephora yesterday and sat in a chair to meet with their aesthetician about what foundation would be good for my dry skin. He asked if I had Rosacea and I said I hadn't been diagnosed but suspected I did. He asked what cleanser I used and when I said oil cleansing, he said to "only use coconut or grapeseed oil because they'll be really moisturizing."He did not mention patch testing (since coconut does NOT work for a lot of people/grapeseed can be drying!) or knowledge of any other oils. Made me a laugh a little afterwards but also sad that he was probably telling other people this advice....Fwiw, I cleanse with Sweet Almond or Jojoba (and the foundation he recommended was Make Up For Ever HD - used with MUFE Hydrating Primer).

[X-posted to r/AsianBeauty] Spreadsheet of products I've tried & their rating

Beauty Tips For Body Care
The SpreadsheetI've been actively trying to improve my skin for a year and a half, and in that time I've tried a lot of products. I put together this spreadsheet to figure out what does and doesn't work for me, and hypothetically to save money.Page one is organized by product. Red means it didn't work for me (probably because it broke me out), green means it did work, blue means that for whatever reason I couldn't draw a conclusion. (E.g., I didn't use it for long enough, I thought another product may be causing a reaction, I just started using it, etc.)Page two lists ingredients. (The formatting is off from uploading it to Drive.) Using this page, I cross reference what is in my products and I can narrow down what may have caused a breakout. Using this as a reference helps me decide if a product is worth my money. I never buy a new product without first checking my spreadsheet. The numbers come from cosdna and show their ratings of acne and irritant ratings. (Irritant is listed with a "C." I'm sure I had a good reason for that.)If this is helpful to you, feel free to use it. If you have ideas for how I can improve it, I'd love to hear them! I'd also be happy to answer questions about the spreadsheet or a product I used—there isn't much notation on the spreadsheet as I use it solely for reference.About my skin: sensitive, acne prone, dry, some PIH, lots of KP, burns very easily. However, it's improved SO MUCH since I began the process.

I was a huge noob and made a big mistake with benzoyl peroxide.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Been hanging out here a bit and figuring out a routine. Been using the red stridex for a while, and the cetaphil moisturizer with sunscreen, and noticed a pretty good improvement overall in my skin. I'm bad with picking, so not having anything to pick helps.I picked up some spot treatment and put it on some trouble areas the other night and went to sleep. I was super happy with the results, as within two days the areas cleared up pretty quickly!Unfortunately, I didn't read the tube very carefully, or else I didn't really appreciate how much I either sweat at night or else how much oil I produce that causes moisture. In any case, I just put the sheets and comforter back on the bed and got yelled at by my wife for like 10 minutes because there are a bunch of bleached out areas on my pillowcase, my side of the sheets, and my side of the comforter.Sigh.At least my skin is pretty clear?

Sorry this is probably a really strange/badly worded question... I just get so discouraged sometimes, because even when my skin looks good my OCD comes out and I start picking/squeezing at virtually nothing. I really need to kick this picking habit (I frequent /r/CompulsiveSkinPicking but to no avail), and it would definitely help if I knew that even people with perfect skin have gunk in their pores.
