[Miscellaneous] On stanky armpits and why hydroxy acids are the best “natural” deodorant

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Let me preface this post by saying that while there are plenty of studies investigating the causes of underarm malodour, a lot remains unknown on this topic, so I will focus on the known bacteria and the compounds they produce that contribute to that stanky stank-stank in our underarms. Needless to say, this is not meant as an extensive resource on underarm malodour but rather as persuasive argument for using hydroxy acids as a deodorant (as per the title). Types of sweat glands: Human beings have two kinds of sweat glands: Apocrine and eccrine. They differ in their function, distribution, composition and secretion. Eccrine glands: (1) regulate our body temperature through perspiration; (2) are distributed throughout the body with the highest number on our underarms, palms of our hands and soles of our feet; (3) pass through the epidermis and empty their contents (i.e. sweat) to the surface through pores; (4) secrete sweat that is composed of water, sodium chloride, fatty acids, lactic acid, citric acid, ascorbic acid, urea, and uric acid. Apocrine glands, on the other hand: (1) have no consensus on their function; (2) are located in regions with long and intermediate hairs (i.e. scalp, underarms, areola and nipples, ear canal, perianal region and some parts of the external genitalia); (3) empty their contents into hair follicles; (4) secrete sweat that is composed of water, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and steroids. Why sweat reeks: It is the sweat secreted by apocrine glands that have the potential to become malodorous. The initial sweat secretion, however, does not smell bad. It starts stinking because there are specific bacteria strains (i.e. Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium) abundant in this region due to its warm and moist (read: moooooiiiiiisssttttt) environment that metabolize the constituents of sweat (i.e. proteins and lipids) into odour molecules such as acetic acid, volatile fatty acids, sulfanyls, and thioalcohols. Traditional deodorants: The way traditional deodorants work is by inhibiting bacterial growth through the use of alcohols and salts, so that these cannot metabolize the sweat, as well as masking the scent of the odour molecules with fragrance. Antiperspirants also prevent sweating with aluminium compounds that react with the sweat to form precipitate salt, which enters into the pore opening of eccrine glands to form a plug, so that the sweat cannot reach the skin surface. In the last decade, traditional deodorants and antiperspirants have been subjected to a lot of public scrutiny due, in large part, to an email (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/breast-defense/) circulating around in 1999 that claimed that the aluminium-based compounds in antiperspirants lead to breast cancer. The email claimed that these compounds are deposited into the lymph nodes under the arm through razor nicks when shaving, and that this causes toxins to accumulate in the upper outer quadrant of the breast tissue closest to the lymph node (which is where most breast cancers develop) because it cannot get rid of the sweat, which leads to cells mutating into cancer. However, the American Cancer Society states: “Some researchers have suggested that the aluminium compounds in antiperspirants may be absorbed into the skin and cause changes in cause changes in estrogen receptors of breast cells. Because estrogen can promote the growth of both cancer and non-cancer breast cells, some scientists have suggested that using the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may be a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. But it isn’t clear that much aluminum is absorbed through the skin. One study that looked at the absorption of aluminum from antiperspirants containing aluminum chlorohydrate applied to the underarms found that only a tiny fraction (0.012%) was absorbed. The actual amount of aluminum absorbed would be much less than what would be expected to be absorbed from the foods a person eats during the same time. It also doesn’t seem that breast cancer tissue contains more aluminum than normal breast tissue. A study that looked at women with breast cancer found no real difference in the concentration of aluminum between the cancer and the surrounding normal tissue. At this point, no clear link has been made between antiperspirants containing aluminum and breast cancer.” (https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/antiperspirants-and-breast-cancer-risk.html). “Natural” deodorants: It is this breast cancer scare that has many people turn to “natural” (read: aluminium-free) deodorants. I regularly see posts on this subreddit discussing natural deodorants, with many expressing disappointment with the ones they have used thus far because they fail to keep the stank away. There is even a popular recipe going around online that contains baking soda, cornstarch and coconut oil that some people have had success with. Baking soda is effective at neutralizing the malodorous acids but at a cost. Our skin maintains an optimum pH-level of 4.5-6.5. Baking soda has a pH-value of 9.0. Applying baking soda to your underarms disrupts the acid mantle, which introduces a host of new problems. I present to you the best “natural” solution... hydroxy acids!: Also known as AHAs and BHAs, these hydroxy acids apparently create an inhospitable environment for pathogens (read: Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium). They transverse their lipid bilayer and dissociate within the cytoplasm, thereby lowering the cytoplasmic pH and killing the bacteria (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/nursing-and-health-professions/hydroxyacid), or so is speculated... Now, I have not been able to find any studies that specifically investigate these pathways, but I do wonder if this could be the reason why AHAs and BHAs work so well as deodorants. I, myself, have experimented with the Stridex Maximum Pads (wasteful packaging, I know), Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 and most recently, the Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, all of which have worked equally well on me, and have lasted much longer on me than regular deodorants. I can easily skip a day of deodorant without smelling rancid. Another upside to using an AHA or BHA as deodorant, is that it removes and prevents ingrown hairs! I also use this on my girly bits and it similarly removes and prevents malodour and ingrown hairs. So anyway, this is my plea for everyone to start using AHAs/BHAs on the underarms in lieu of their regular deodorant!*Obviously, this does not apply to individuals who get prescription-strength antiperspirants from their doctors to treat their hyperhidrosis. TL;DR: Use an AHA or BHA for your underarms instead or regular or “natural” deodorant.

[Misc] Some thoughts on sheet masks.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Not sure if SkincareAddiction will receive this post well, but it needs to be said.Sheet masks are extremely wasteful. Everything about a sheet mask is made for one use. The sheet itself is obviously meant to be thrown away after one use. What’s more concerning is that the packaging that it comes in is not recyclable. Though it might feel and tear like paper, most sheet mask packaging is lined on the inside with a thin plastic film. This is to keep the serum from seeping out of the paper layer. You can neither throw it in with paper products not plastics. It’s waste that goes to the landfill.Sheet masks are not very hygienic. It might surprise you to know that sheet masks are probably the only skincare product that are touched by human hands. Most sheet masks on the market are folded by [hand](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjUvaOfQjoc) or by a [semi-automatic machine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFuPoGTq-A). Both of these methods require human hands to touch *every single sheet*. Moreover, when folding by hand, there is a sheet of plastic that helps guide the folds which doesn’t appear to be disinfected between use.Sheet mask manufacturing is accused of involving poor labour protections. Most companies give the sheet mask manufacturing to subcontractors, so none are made in-house. There have been multiple accusations of companies using home labour i.e., making these masks in private homes of the labour, which is illegal in Korea. Luxury and affordable brands alike have been accused of these practices many times in the past few years. [2008](http://enews.imbc.com/News/RetrieveNewsInfo/29995) [2014](https://www.cosinkorea.com/news/article.html?no=8333) [2016](https://weekly.donga.com/BestClick/3/all/11/536977/1)Sheet masks don’t need to be wasteful. There are many DIYs that show you how to make your own. I used [this](https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/hubfs/FacialMask_Template%20(1).jpg.jpg)) template to cut from a muslin cloth (you can use an old cotton t-shirt too!). I soak it in mixture of cold water and a toner of choice, currently it’s the Laneige Cream Skin. After each use, I throw it in the washing machine and air dry it. Best thing about using muslin is that it gets softer the more you wash it!I won’t deny that sheet masks are luxurious and pampering, especially when you need a pick-me-up. And that’s what they are, an occasional treat to self-indulge, not an essential part of a routine.

[Routine help] is there anything I can do to treat acne that’s a result of purging?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I started using AHAs recently, namely TO’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% peel 2x a week and their Glycolic acid toner on the nights I’m not using that. It’s been about a week and a half and while my purge isn’t as bad as it could be, I do have four huge, red pimples on my cheeks that are really bothering me. I know they’re due to my skin purging, but is there anything I can do to help them go away faster or any spot treatments you guys recommend to minimize them?

[Skin Concerns] Everything I try to do for my skin seems useless.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone, I need your help because everything I try to do for my skin seems useless.I have acne, super oily skin (after one hour of washing my face, it gets oily), it’s not sensitive at all and breaks out easily. I’ve taken Accutane for 8 months before stopping it because my doctor suggested it and slowly my acne came back. I don’t have a bad acne, but still can get out of control. Attaching surrent skin situation. My current routine is:Inkey - Salicylic Acid CleanserSunday Riley - Luna (I’ve used UFO in the past)Sunday Riley - Good GenesTo remove my makeup (which is usually a light layer of foundation and concealer) I use 9 To 5 by LushI'm testing this routine for about 3 months now and I can't see a difference.I know it’s lacking a lot of steps but I don’t know much about skincare and that’s why I’m writing here.I’m also taking some vitamins by Halo Beauty (Kiwi Seed Booster) but doesn’t seem to be doing anything for my skin. I’m on month 6.I don't have a budget for my skin if something truly works and I live in Italy.Thank you!https://preview.redd.it/4wr2mynwyxv41.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b09126666d0c37af0bb7c3e5d592c6d0d9da7112

[Skin Concerns] Jajoba oil or Shea butter problem?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I recently started adding some drops of pure jajoba oil onto my face in the morning and night in the middle of my skincare routine and i have been experiencing breakouts all around my face. it’s not very intense, just lots of red bumps that may develop into white heads. is it possible that the jajoba oil is clogging my pores or could i be something else?((i also just recently tried to switch to the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm AP+ moisturizer as well, so maybe this is the problem? this moisturizer has fantastic reviews and feels amazing on my skin though, but maybe the shea butter in it is clogging my pores?))i have combination skin that can get very dry very quickly if i don’t moisturizei’m just not sure what is causing this and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

[SKIN CONCERNS] PLEASE HELP I AM DESPERATE - ACID BURN

Beauty Tips For Body Care
In around March I decided it would be a good idea to try to get rid of a "mole" that was on the side of my nose. It really wasn't that bad, but it is something that has always bothered me my whole life and i've had problems with. It was raised and it was mostly skin color with a little black in the middle. Regardless, I had seen lots of post of people removing theirs with apple cider vinegar and with corona going on I knew I would be alone for a long time. I decided to try it and basically it went horrible. It first started out by getting really black. It then scabbed up and i couldn't handle it anymore and when i started to see some of it come loose I pulled it off the rest of the way. Underneath I was left with a half inch in diameter red mark the is so bright red. It upsets me so much I don't want to go anything or go anywhere. Its gotten to me so much that everyone who keep wanting to hang out with me I am telling them that I think I have corona just to avoid being seen by others. Whenever I have to go out I make sure to wear a mask to cover it up. I have tried everything I can think of to make it go away. I started off using a ton of antibiotic ointment and vaseline on it and covering it with a bandaid. It helped a little but not a lot. I then tried aloe and tea tree oil, but that didn't really work either. I tried cortizone to take out the redness, but that did really help either and may have made it worse at times. I bought scaraway gel and pads and keep using that as of now and its helped a little more but it is still so visible. I had the doctor prescribe me some silvadene burn cream, but after doing some research on it I found out it can actually make it worse. In addition i feel that this has stressed me out so much that all the acne I finally got rid of for about a year has now started to come back a lot because of all the stress it has caused. I just want it to be gone it makes me so upset and I pray every night that it will be gone so I can actually go out and see people because right now I am becoming so depressed just staring at my wall everyday praying it will go away. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do to speed up the process please answer. If you really think you can help and you want pictures dm me. I will do anything for it to go away and just heal please help me I am so desperate.

[Skin Concern] Can we talk about skin care down there?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Sorry if this isn’t allowed here, but I thought ya’ll might have some good ideas.I shaved my (female) nether regions for the first time two days ago. I thought I did everything right. Brand new razor, plenty of shaving cream, warm water and moisturizer afterwards. For the next day and a half it was pretty pleasant, but now I’ve broken out into angry red whiteheads all over my mound. It’s pretty painful. I can’t see it very well (bad anatomy) but the little white dots are obvious.I’ve always had pretty resilient, non reactive skin so I didn’t really think much about it beforehand.I’m really bummed out, because it felt pretty sexy and empowering at the time, and I really liked how it looked. :(What went wrong and how do I take care of it while I recover? And is there a way to keep it from happening or should I just return to the bush and give up on this?

I have a pimple on my face which has dried up and has nothing in it. About 2 weeks ago it was a whitehead, now it's just a hard raised bump which won't go away. Any ideas how to get rid of it? Thanks!

[Personal] Just ranting - upset nurse in NYC

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Just ranting - Upset nurse in NYCI didn’t really know where to talk about this and I didn’t want to burden the people around me with more about COVID. But I’m in NYC and it’s honestly madness. Some days, healthcare workers just squat in the hallway and start crying. One of our top ER physicians committed suicide a couple of days ago. I’m volunteering as a nurse, so I don’t even make money during this time. And I hate that the system capitalizes on our desire to do good like I WANT to help, but why is helping mutually exclusive from making a livable salary? My face has been breaking out; I literally have a line of acne where the mask makes contact with my face. My skin is dry and flaky. My hands are dry from washing them every few minutes. I’m upset that people are PROTESTING this virus and calling it fake news - like people would really go and pretend that they’re nurses. It’s not fake news that every shift I go in, 5-10 people die every single time. Thanks in advance for listening. I just needed to decompress for a bit to strangers. You guys are an awesome community and I really appreciate everyone here. 💛

[Misc] Please do your own research before buying all the products recommended to you by Deciem

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don’t know about anyone else, but the amount of ‘I bought these products from The Ordinary and now my skin is worse’ posts on this sub are frustrating and overwhelming. I think it’s great that Deciem offers individual routine suggestions to people, but...They’re trying to make money. You don’t need to buy everything, especially if you’re new to skincare.Research each product before buying. You’ll find loads of reviews on this sub by using the search bar. Don’t buy anything unless you understand how it works and what it’s supposed to do.You don’t need multiples of the same active. E.g. The Ordinary sells mandelic, lactic and glycolic acid which are all AHAs. Pick just one.Introduce one product in at a time. This is really important. If you’re new to actives, you don’t need the AHA/BHA peeling solution. I’ve seen way too many people buy this when their skin is just not ready for it.Go slow with the actives. Daily use straight away is a recipe for disaster.

[Skin Concern] Enlarged + Constantly Blocked Pores

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, I’m hoping someone can help? Here is my skin click here (sorry for the awkward up-close photo & my awful eye area which is another concern ...)But for years my skin has given me grief. the most nagging concern largely is my huge pores and the fact they’re constantly blocked easily. I’ve tried so much like, facial scrubs, lactic acid, salicylic acid. I even use Niacinimide and Zinc which has done wonders for my oiliness but not in the pores overall appearance.I used pores strips on and off but try not to since I’ve heard they make them worse. Even still once they’d get clean, it wouldn’t take long before they’re stuffed up again. If I brush my fingers over my nose area, I can feel the bumpiness and the crap in them. Has anyone got a miracle cure/produce/routine or any advice? Help!

[Review] of the Drunk Elephant Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Claims: "An innovative jelly cleanser that removes all traces of makeup, excess oil, pollution and any other grime from the day. Free of SLS, fragrance and essential oils, Beste™ No. 9 is totally non-irritating, non-sensitizing and appropriate for every skin type" (Excerpt taken from the brand's product page: https://www.drunkelephant.com/products/beste-no-9-jelly-cleanser).Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate, Propanediol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Glycolipids, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Lauryl Glucoside, Cucumis Melo Cantalupensis Fruit Extract, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride, Polylysine.pH-level: Using the Preciva digital pH meter (model PH320001), the pH settled at 5.60 after stabilizing at that value for one minute. On the Drunk Elephant product page, it was claimed to have a pH value of 5.50.Packaging: I received the 30 ml / 1 oz mini size of this product, as part of the 2019 Sephora birthday gift that also included the mini version of the Protini™ Polypeptide Cream. The mini size is packaged in an upright tube with a brilliantly-designed twist cap dispenser, eliminating the risk of breaking the cap hinge, and not being able to seal the product again. The same cannot be said of the full-sized version, whose dispenser has the regular pop-off cap with a hinge. Why the brand does not include the twist cap dispenser on the full-size version, is beyond me. The twist cap dispenser is the best thing about this product.Texture and application: I love jelly cleansers, so I am biased here but I loved the texture of this cleanser. It was easy to spread out and gave a nice lather once I added water to it. I needed to use about half a teaspoon for my entire face.Cleaning ability: This product is best suited as a morning or second cleanser. While it does remove makeup, it requires a little more rubbing than, say an oil-based cleanser, and you may find this irritating to your skin. For me, it removed the KVD Tattoo Eyeliner, Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche lipstick, and Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick.Skin feel after use: Despite it's appropriate pH-level and gentle surfactants, this cleanser stripped my skin and left me with a tight, squeaky-clean feeling, and severely dehydrated skin. I used the whole bottle because I am stubborn and I wanted to give it a fair shot but I am now regretting it, as it takes weeks for my skin to return to normal. A little disclaimer: I am allergic to Aloe Vera and this product contains it. However, I only ever show an allergic reaction to high concentrations, so I doubt this is what stripped my skin.About my skin: I have combination skin (oily T-zone, normal cheeks, dry eye region).Skincare routine during trial: All of my skincare products stayed the same except for the Drunk Elephant Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, which replaced my first and second cleanser. In the evening, I used the Drunk Elephant Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser (lathering and rinsing with lukewarm/cold water and a microfiber facial towel), 0.1% treinoin cream, Rohto Mentholatum Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion, and Aquaphor Healing Ointment. In the morning, I wiped my face with a microfiber facial towel soaked in cold water, and then applied the Rohto Mentholatum Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion, belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb, and the Sunscreen Company CyberDERM Simply Zinc Ultra SPF 50 sunscreen. I usually double-cleanse in the evening but I haven't found any HG cleansers yet (I haven't tried very many). During the trial, I decided to only use one cleanser, as I did not want the first oil-based cleanser that I usually use, to skew the results.Overall thoughts and would I recommend or repurchase? Overall, I really disliked the cleanser and I would not repurchase nor recommend it to anyone. My favourite thing about this cleanser is the twist cap, but the full-sized version does not even come with it, and it is not like I would keep buying the mini-sized version (it is not even available for purchase here in Canada). Looking at the pH level and the ingredient list, I would not have thought it would be stripping. If anyone here has a chemistry background or any insight into why this product could be stripping the skin, please share your wisdom. I have read multiple other reviews echoing my concerns.

[Routine Help] Frontline healthcare working needing skin care advice from being in PPE for 7 hours a day

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m a physical therapist working in a field hospital and unlike in a typical hospital where people usually spend a maximum of around 30 mins in their PPE at a time I’m in mine for 5 hours and then another 2 hours during my shift. I have sensitive skin that can be somewhat oily and redness so this is just exacerbating my problem. Before this I had a skin care routine that had help curb my acne and skin issues, but now I’m in a worse spot. The bridge of my nose is bruised and the skin peels off a bit. It also doesn’t feel as elastic, I feel pulling along the bridge of my nose like it’s too stiff. I’ve been moisturizing and it helps it, but it still doesn’t feel right. When I take off my N95 and face shield I’m super oily and I try to wipe some off with a paper towel, but I’m still getting large under skin acne that can be painful when pressed as well as white heads. The mask also irritates my cheeks and causes a burning feeling with some skin peeling and I’ve been more red than normal and irritated.I wash my face twice a day including an immediate shower when I get home from my shift. I do take a hot shower to just feel like I’m properly sanitized. I use face reality ultra gentle cleanser and moisturizer. I haven’t been using my acne med 5% benzoyl peroxide since my face just feels dry and irritated enough. But when I moisturize I feel like I get more white heads after even though my skin feels a bit better, but still not my “normal”.Do you guys have any recommendations on a new skin care routine? Or any products in particular? Thank you so much for your help!

[Product Question] Why is there so much conflicting information around Retinol (Vitamin A)? Drunk Elephants application suggestion is just as confusing

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I purchased the A-Passioni Retinol 1% cream from Drunk Elephant after researching many reviews and seeing great results. I’ve never tried retinol before and it wasn’t until after I purchased and received the product that I realised I probably should have started out on a lower %. I’m going to stick with 1x a week and only half a pea sized amount, I’m applying b-hydra before hand and protini afterwards to make a buffer and a moisture sandwich. This is after many recommendations on YouTube and google searches from supposed dermatologists and doctors. However, the more I research the more I get confused. I’ve read that it’s a myth to wait 20 minutes after washing your face to apply it and 20 minutes after applying to use anything else. But then 100 other pages say it’s not and that not waiting 20 minutes until the face isn’t damp at all and using a product straight after can affect the potency and the way it’s absorbed.Several articles say it’s fine to use Retinol for all skin type and ages (FYI I’m 24), others say you shouldn’t be using it if you’re under 30 without any signs of ageing as it can have the reverse affect and backfire. So which is it?The instructions on the Drunk Elephant retinol claim to apply to a clean dry face and mix it with b-hydra serum and marula oil. So no buffer with a moisturiser before hand? I’ve also read that mixing it with products like that (as opposed to using one after the other) is unnecessary and makes it less effective.I actually contacted Drunk Elephant for some advice and I’m still a bit confused. In the email I was advised not to use any other products whilst using the DE products and to actually discontinue use but without an explanation as to why (is that just for marketing purposes?). They mentioned particularly products with harsh ingredients like fragrance and dyes and SLS to discontinue, but that’s a given I don’t use products with those anyway. They also said not to use chemical sunscreen.I am so confused and overwhelmed by all of the contradicting information - please help a girl out!I’m 24 I don’t have signs of ageing can I still use it? I just want to improve the texture of my skin and unclog and reduce pore size.I’m cleansing then using the B-hydra Serum then applying half a pea sized amount of retinol once face is dry, waiting till face is dry and products fully rubbed in, then applying the Protini Moisturiser is that going to reduce effectiveness or cause any irritation?I’m using it in the evening, once a week, is this ok and how long until I up the dose? I don’t plan to use everyday as I think it’s excessive - maybe 3 times a week or 4 max (depending on how my skin handles it)how many days should I wait afterwards until using BHA 2%?Can I carry on using my other products despite DE’s suggestion? I have a Vitamin C serum that I love and would like to keep using. Can I use that on the days I use Retinol?Lastly, do brands actually give science based advice that’s researched or do they just share their opinions? Because why is there so much conflicting information from not only different brands, but also supposed dermatologists?!

[review] The Truth About Glossier

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Glossier claims to have a “skin first” philosophy, however, their ingredients tell a different story.I originally found this brand a few months ago while looking for a very light “tint” to enhance my face. I have a pretty serious skincare regimen and wanted to highlight my hard work. When I read about the company and the products, I was very excited. Here’s a little breakdown of their products.Skin Tint - •Claims to be “appropriate for all skin types and non-irritating” •When I took a closer look at the ingredients list, it contains ALCOHOL, Corn Oil, and Castor Oil. •After two days of use, my “glass skin” was covered in irritation and painful acne.Stretch Concealer- •Claims to be “non-comedogenic” •The claims are a bold-faced lie as cocoa seed butter and avocado oil are included ingredients. •It didn’t cause irritation under my eyes. It was very oily however and didn’t do much to cover the spots the tint caused. I would not recommend to use over acne but under eye use seemed okay. I set with a light powder.Haloscope- •Includes coconut oil, castor oil, and sweet almond oil. •I limited this to the high points of my face. While being a bit greasy, has not seemed to cause irritation. I would not recommend to use over acne.Lidstar- •Contains Aluminum (EWG scale of 4-9.) •This should be noted for people that try to avoid aluminum in their skincare and deodorants. •Did not cause breakouts or irritation-Mascara, and Eyeliner • Did not cause any irritation. Would recommend for all skin types. •Mascara takes a bit of rubbing to get off.Boy Brow and Brow Flick- •Didn’t cause any inflammation or irritation. •Would recommend to all skin typesCloud Paint- •Pretty, pigmented colors •Contain fungal acne triggers and the colorants used range from 4 to 5 on EWG’s scale.Generation G- •The color on these are absolutely lovely. They do smell heavily of rose and are drying. •I will continue to use because they are beautiful.Balm Dot Com- •I have only used on my lips. I liked the scents and they decently moisturized my lips. Would recommend if you like balms.Solution- •Very fragranced •I do not recommend to sensitive or dry skin. I do recommend for acne prone skin, but only in moderation. •I use this very lightly over troubled areas and on my nose. •Has shrunken the pores on and around my nose, but caused a rash when used too close to my mouth.I will not list all of their skincare. A quick search of the ingredients will show the risky ingredients they chose to put in. These include alcohols, heavy fragrance, comedogenic oils, and potentially irritating essential oils. I recommend SkinCarisma to look up the products.*About my skin: Combination to oily. The more moisture I give it, the less oily it becomes. Prone to acne only when irritated. On the sensitive side, but not horribly so. Pretty close to “glass skin” goalTLDR: ALWAYS research the ingredients list before purchasing products. Companies may look like they have “healthy” products for your skin, but you would be surprised at what you find. SkinCarisma is a great source. If this is helpful, I’ll post about TULA next.

[Misc] Care package thank you megathread!!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
The healthcare worker care package exchange has gotten a ton of volunteers (over 200 as of April 10th)!!So we wanted to start this thank you thread for anyone who has received a care package. You can post a picture of the package & products, say thank you to the person who sent it, and generally share all that wholesome positivity :')We'll also do a roundup of thank you posts so that you can check them out! Why a megathread? With at least 200 people receiving care packages, most of whom want to thank the person who sent it!, we want to make sure there is a space for everyone. That can include people who don't want to make a stand alone post, who want to make one at a later date after they've tried the products, etc. And for volunteers looking for a one-stop-shop of ideas to put in their own care packages ;)We also don't want to overwhelm the front page of the sub, so we want to have this option available to those who want to use it! How do I add an image to a comment?Unlike posts, reddit doesn't let you directly upload an image in a comment. Instead you'll need to use an image upload site like imgur, then copy & paste the image link into your reddit comment. Here's a quick & kind of shoddy guide on uploading to imgur. Can I still make a post?As of right now you can still absolutely make a thank you post - especially if you have reviews or first impressions of the products! If the front page really does get overwhelmed, we might need to put certain posts on pause. Posts that include first impressions of the products and other Haul info would be perfectly fine, but posts that did not include first impressions would be redirected to this thread. That's something we don't want to do because this project is so freakin' wholesome and beautiful and we'd like everyone to say thank you in the way they most prefer. But we also need to make sure that posts spaced out a bit so that they get every bit of positivity they deserve. And given that there will be a ton of people receiving care packages, well, it's good to be prepared! I want to send/receive a care package!!!Excellent!! Check out the healthcare worker care package exchange post for information on how to sign up :D Thank you postsDid I miss any? Let me know! You can comment, message me, or even report the post - don't worry, nothing bad will happen to it! [Skin concerns] Keratosis Pilaris worse when I treat it?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve had KP on my arms forever, but about 2 weeks ago I got recommended a topical designed to combat it (Neostrata PDS with AHA+BHA, lactic acid ) so I have been using it every day and added some Urea cream later in the day for moisture. I only did it on one arm to see the difference better, and to my surprise the area I treat is just rougher and slightly more red (even after 2 weeks of doing this). I am not having a bad reaction to the cream I think, it’s just that the bumps seem slightly rougher and all the moisture really showcases the redness.Has anyone had the same experience?

[REVIEW] Just got my order for Aveeno colloidal oatmeal in, and HOLY CRAP is it good.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have dry, dehydrated skin. I want to have more moisturized, even skin and less redness.Just did a mask with Aveeno colloidal oatmeal and you get a TON of product, like comparable amount to the Aztec clay mask. I think it only cost me $6-$7 too. It is a super fine power, and it does get sticky quickly when wet. I made it pretty thick, and next time I will definitely make it way thinner. After leaving it on for 20 mins, my skin feels deeply hydrated and soft. My pores look smaller but that could be from something else. I am in love.

[misc] my dermatologist has died

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don’t know where else to post and I kinda need to tell it to someone.I was super excited this morning because I finally wanted to call my dermatologist (whom I and my mom has been seeing ever since she opened her own practice, which was in 2012) because I booked my first ever facial last week. I got into skincare again last year and I wanted to visit my dermatologist again. I’ve been putting it off.. because I was too lazy to call and I was kinda busy. My mom met her on the train before she opened her own practice (they used to commute together) and fought very hard for her practice to be successful. She removed multiple moles from my mother and has helped her tremendously with her rosacea. She was a kind, loving doctor, she loved her job.So when I visit her website to grab the phone number, I found out that she died. Exactly two months ago. She was 48 and has two small kids. She has died of a disease (her husband didn’t disclose which one), but it seems that her death came more sudden than they expected because it appears that she worked basically until her death.I am so heartbroken, I was super shocked because it was so unexpected. my mom also felt bad because she canceled her last appointment with her because she was so busy.Eventually my mom and I will get our medical records from her husband, who seems to handle those things right now. But we don’t know when it actually is the right time to ask for them because we don’t wanna be disrespectful toward their grief.Thank you Dr. Christ, you were the best! R.I.P. I will always continue to wear sunscreen daily and even though I have to find a new dermatologist to replace you, nobody will replace you in my heart.

[PSA] Rosehip oil can definitely break you out, even though it is known to be very gentle and is much beloved.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Short story: I cut out rosehip oil and I'm seeing dramatically clearer skin after months of struggling.Long story: I over-exfoliated back in October/November and ended up with very dehydrated skin. I normally have very clear skin, but it was tight, oily, and broken out. I used the advice from this sub to tackle dehydration, and it worked (thanks guys!). My skin began to clear up, but then the breakouts returned with a vengeance. I was so confused, because my skin was definitely no longer dehydrated, and I'd never been broken out like this in my entire life (I'm 27).I noticed that my forehead was the worst, but my cheeks were ok. The last step of my nighttime routine was a generous smothering of rosehip oil, but it often rubbed off of my cheeks in my sleep, but not my forehead. I finally made the connection that maybe this could be the culprit.Skipped it entirely, woke up with my skin at least 50% clearer. Skipped it again last night, and it's another 50% clearer. I'm so happy because it's been such a long struggle, but I'm also shocked. Everything I read online said that rosehip oil has never made anybody ever break out, ever, in the history of skin.Just letting y'all know I am living proof that it made somebody break out.

[Misc] Holy Grail Products & Ingredients - Week 14: Niacinamide

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi there and welcome to the HG Product thread for niacinamide! This is the place to share your holy grail niacinamide products :)(Thank you to u/crazypenguinlady, who allowed us all to be graced by the most regal, elegant, and splendid picture of Rosie the cat) Here’s how it works:We have a template you can copy. This thread doesn't have any top-level categories, so simply reply to this thread with the template and fill it out. Include as much info as you can! Percentage of niacinamide, smell, product feel, packaging, effects on your skin, etc. Comment template notes:'Niacinamide %' is highly encouraged! Brands will often include that info in the product description, and sometimes review sites will have it as well. But if don't worry if you can't track it down.'Skin info' covers skin type, skin concerns and skin tone/ethnicity/Fitzpatrick type.'Ingredient list' is optional, but encouraged. Online sellers like Amazon and review sites like Beautypedia often list a product's ingredients.‘Special info’ covers anything that people might be specifically looking for. Like cruelty free / vegan / fatty alcohol free / fragrance free / pH value / etc. Depending on how you're browsing reddit (desktop, mobile), there are different formats to use. We've included both types to hopefully make formatting easy! 1. If you're on desktop and the comment box looks like this (Redesign), copy this:Product name:Niacinamide %:Price (range):Country of purchase:Skin info:Ingredient list:Special info:Experience & opinion: 2. If you're on desktop and the comment box looks like this (Legacy), copy this:**Product name:** **Niacinamide %:** **Price (range):** **Country of purchase:** **Skin info:** **Ingredient list:** **Special info:** **Experience & opinion:** Make sure there are two spaces at the end of each line! 3. If you're on the mobile app, you use the above format. But since the app won't let you copy & paste text, you can copy it from this google doc.(Sorry for the extra steps!) Don't forget to have fun!Of course, this thread isn’t just about listing a load of products - it’s also about sharing experiences! So feel free to chat about your product with others, or ask someone a question about the product they like, or share your experience with the product someone else has recced. Let’s make this thread both informative and fun :) If you're looking for recommendationsIf you're in this thread trying to find product recommendations, it can be helpful to look for users with skin types or skin concerns that are similar to yours. If you have any questions about the suitability of a product for your skin, or how to incorporate it into your routine, don't hesitate to post in the Daily Help Thread stickied to the top of the front page. This thread is part of a big series of product recommendation threads. [MISC] Sensitive and Hyper-Reactive Skin: What I've learned after 10+ years.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello SCA! Long time lurker here. I wanted to share with you my skin care and lifestyle journey after dealing with severe skin sensitivity for over 10 years. Background: I live in a dry city in Canada. I had a summer job in 2008 working in the engineering department. The rooms I worked in were dry, dusty, old, gross, and located above welding areas with questionable ventilation. At work, I began developing severe itchiness which developed into hives and rashes. I spent the summer (4 months!) dealing with this new extraordinarily reactive skin. At first, I dealt with it by taking a myriad of oral medications, OTC and prescription, and dealing with all of their side effects. It was awful. After the summer, I finished the job, and the rashes and hives stopped appearing. My skin was left extremely sensitive and reactive, a condition which has only worsened with time. I believe that something in the environment at this workplace permanently "sensitized" my skin.At first, I cut out all products with fragrance, this includes essential oils, and anything with mint or menthol. Over time, I realized that I also cannot use anything containing sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. I can use derivatives, such as sodium lauryl sarcinate, etc. Note that I don't actually have any allergies, these are sensitivities.I will note that my sensitivity is the WORST on my scalp, fairly bad in the armpit / sides of body region, as well as my inner thighs. My face is also fairly reactive, especially near my hairline, nose, and cheeks. The products that most aggravated my skin were soaps, shampoo and shaving cream. I have developed eczema in these regions, as well as sebhorric dermatitis on my scalp. I cannot use the majority of prescription and OTC "dandruff" shampoos, as they contain SLS and/or fragrance. One things to note - product rotation is key with hyper reactive skin. If I use the same ingredient repeatedly, there is a higher chance that I will develop a sensitivity to it. What does that look like? Hives, rashes, itching, breakouts of dandruff, etc. Because of this, I try to use products with as few ingredients as possible (less possible irritants to react to or develop reactions to). I also rotate certain products, especially cleansing agents as these seem to be the things I react to most often. Here are the products that I use to keep everything in check:Hair:Note on Shampoo: Due to the sebhorric dermatitis, my scalp develops thick, oily, scaly sebum and skin buildup that one shampooing does not adequately remove. I will alternate between using Shampoo 1 one day, Shampoo 2 the next day, both shampoos the third day. I try to wash my hair at most 2-3 times per week, as I react to the water in the shower (more on that later) and my skin on my torso reacts to shampoo rinsing over them.Shampoo 1: Psoriasin Treatment Shampoo. This contains salicylic acid, no SLS or fragrance, and a rather short ingredient list. I follow the directions on the bottle to leave on for a few minutes. This is my HG for keeping the sebhorric dermatitis at bay, though I do find it slightly drying.Shampoo 2: Cliniderm Soothing Scalp Shampoo. This is an eczema approved shampoo that I find very soothing and gentle. SLS and fragrance free.Conditioner: I don't put on my scalp, so don't need to stress as much. I haven't found any HG conditioner, so use whatever I find at the health food store that is fragrance free with as few ingredients as possible. Typically I find these products rather heavy and leave my hair feeling weighed down, but my goal is to not have scales and rashes, so that is okay. I currently use Nature Clean Unscented Conditioner and was recently using Green Beaver Coconut Moisturizing Natural Conditioner. No styling products except for minimal use of silicone-free low fragrance heat protectant (long discontinued so I won't bother mentioning the brand) which I avoid getting on my roots.Body and Face cleaners and moisturizing:Avene Xericalm AD Lipid Replenishing Cleansing Oil: This is so soothing, gentle and gentle. I mainly use this as a body wash. You can also add it to the bath for a soak. I also use it to wash my face in the shower. When my scalp is having a really bad day, usually because some jerk sprayed cologne around me, I will use this in lieu of shampoo. I don't regularly use it on my scalp, because it isn't as good at removing sebum buildup as the shampoos listed above.Eucerin Complete Repair Cleanser: I rotate between this and the Avene cleanser for body and face wash in the shower. I find this one a bit more cleansing, but still very gentle.Shaving cream: Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel is my HG. It's fragrance free and so soothing! I don't like to travel with the pressurized container, so I bring Every Man Jack Fragrance Free Shave Cream which I also adore (but it's pricier). I have also used Cerave Cleansing Bar as a shaving medium for shorter trips, which works very well too.Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Cream: My HG! I use this body and face, anywhere that is itchy or scaly. It's expensive, so I only use it on those spots and only when needed. This is AMAZING for getting rid of itchy spots, hives, eczema, everything.Eucerin Skin Calming Cream: This one is almost as good as the Eczema Relief Body Cream, but I can get it for cheaper because Costco sometimes sells it. Use it the same way as the Eczema cream.Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion: This is my HG! I use this to moisturize my face, neck, and chest. I have tried the Moisturizing Cream, but personally find that it doesn't absorb as well and feels too heavy and the moisturizing payoff doesn't seem any better than the lotion.Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion (Fragrance Free): I put this all over my body wherever the other creams did not already cover (mostly lower legs, arms, stomach, etc). Excellent every day moisturizer.Clarins Contour Body Treatment Oil: Okay, this one doesn't seem to fit, but I love it so much. If I am having a good day with my skin (no itching or hives), I will use this immediately after the shower on wet skin from the ankles to the waist, plus on my arm flab. I follow with the moisturizers listed above. This oil smells AMAZING, I don't react to it at all, and it leaves my skin absolutely silky smooth, soft, and FIRM. It is amazing for cellulite too.Deodorant: Routine Cream SUPERSTAR Deodorant. As mentioned before, my armpits are extremely reactive. I cannot handle anything with fragrance, or with aluminum, or alcohol, or anything. I am also a naturally very smelly (ew) person. After years of rashes, burning, and itching, I gave up on smelling okay and settled for various natural deodorants that didn't really work. I tried many products, from salt-based (stung and didn't work) to rice based (didn't work), and have finally found my HG. I honestly don't know what I would do without Superstar, it is fabulous. It seems pricy at $30 per tub, but they last me over a year each. They smell strongly, but it's all natural and I don't react to it at all. SUPERSTAR contains coconut oil, kaolin clay (my fave ingredient) and several trendy ingredients like activated charcoal, magnesium, and probiotics. It is absolutely amazing. It honestly works better than any other deodorant or antiperspirant that I have ever tried, and my arm pits feel so happy!Hand soap: Due to my SLS and fragrance sensitivities, I get very bad skin reactions from hand soap. I love Live Clean Coconut Milk Hand Soap. This is my HG, I'm in love.Toothpaste: Okay I feel silly including this, but I kept getting canker sores in my mouth and finally realized that my tooth paste had SLS in it! Since switching to Sensodyne Fresh Mint Tooth Paste (note that you have to check the ingredients - many have sodium laureth sulfate) my gums have been much happier!Face Skin Care:In addition to my Cerave obsession, I am really into Asian Skin Care, namely as I find the products tend to be gentle and good for my sensitive skin. Sensitive skin ages faster than other skin due to its damaged moisture barrier, so I try to use serums and repairing products as tolerated. I also have developed rosacea and have issues with clogged pores, but since I don't tolerate actives very well, this is the skin issue that I have yet to find an adequate solution for.Cleansers are listed above with body stuff - my face is so sensitive that I can't really use anything else. I occasionally dabble in double cleansing on good days, so will use Hado Labo Cleansing Oil followed by the Eucerin cleanser listed above**.** Not much to say about this - I don't notice much of a difference (good or bad) when I use it. I was hoping it would help with clogged pores, but it doesn't really. It is excellent at removing foundation, so I always use it if I wore makeup that day.Hado Labo Gokujyun Lotion: This toner has a lot of hyaluronic acid in it and is great under moisturizer. I use it AM and PM unless I'm in a major reaction (less is more on those days!).Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Essence: I use this anytime my skin feels drier or is experience more redness than normal. I find using it regularly makes it less effective, so I try to use it only 1-2x per week. I find it makes a huge difference with skin redness and flushing due to heat.Lip routine: Aquaphor: Love this as a lip balm. First I apply Gokujyun lotion to my lips, let it get tacky, then apply my Cerave moisturizer, let it absorb a bit, then apply the aquaphor in a thick layer. Lovely! For whatever reason, this combination makes my lips quite pink and people often ask me what lip gloss I'm wearing (LOL!) My husband will try not to kiss me because he doesn't want to get the colour on his lips.Environmental factors:Water: I have found that I react strongly to chlorine in water. The amount of chlorine in my water fluctuates depending on the time of year (usually worse when runoff is higher, like in spring). I also struggle with hard water. I don't know if the minerals in the hard water cause reactions, or if it is simply the fact that hard water does not remove cleansing products as effectively, so perhaps I react to the product residue on my skin. For this reason, I try to limit bathing to every other day and only wash my face in the evening. I try to wash my hair twice a week (so often shower without wetting my hair). I don't get very sweaty or dirty, so am able to pull this off. Either way, my biggest priority over the last few years was to get a water softener. This meant changing my living arrangements, but honestly it has been so good for my skin. The water softener is supposed to have a chlorine removal component as well, but I'm not convinced it works completely, as I still see seasonal fluctuation with my sensitivity to water in the bath or shower.Air Humidity: My skin is significantly worse if it is dry in the air. I use a humidifier to keep my home as humid as possible without getting water damage from condensation.Pollution: I live in a city with very clean air. We aren't that clean, but our wind blows the pollution away (sorry neighbors!). I notice that when I travel, my skin reacts if I am in big cities or areas with smog. I deal with this by wearing extra layers of moisturizer to create a barrier. I also am a huge proponent of scent free public spaces. I tell people who work in close proximity with me that I have severe fragrance sensitivities and ask that they do not apply scented products (hand cream, cologne) when I am nearby. Most people are kind and willing to accommodate this. I will gently remind someone if I see them pull out a perfume bottle, and they are usually gracious and willing to skip it. If someone is wearing perfume previously applied, this is less of an issue than spraying it around me. Some people have serious health conditions triggered by fragrance, like asthma attacks, so it's not a ridiculous thing to ask for.Home cleaners and laundry detergent: I react strongly to most of these. I like to use natural home cleaners, like from the brand Method. Most of the time we use dish soap to clean, which is recommended for many of the delicate surfaces in your home anyways (acrylic, quartz, etc). I use Nellie's Laundry Powder for my sheets, and unscented regular laundry soap for my clothes and towels. If I use scented laundry detergent, I will get hives. I also can't walk down the laundry soap aisle at the store, I will get hives...Sun: Sun exposure is really bad for rosacea, plus aging. Unfortunately I react to most sunscreens. I am currently using Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin SPF 50. I don't love this product - it leaves a white cast (but I'm so pale that isn't a big deal), is kind of greasy, but it does it's job and I don't react to it (yet). I will not repurchase. My biggest way to deal with sun exposure is hats and UPF clothing. I know it's not sexy, but skin cancer, wrinkles, and hives (from sunscreen reactions) are also not sexy... so I'm the lady with the long sleeved, collared shirts and the wide brimmed hat when outside during the danger hours of 10-2 pm. I always use sunscreen on my face if outside for prolonged periods of time, but if I'm going for a 20 minute walk, it's a big hat for me!Diet: I've been told by many pseudoscience practitioners that skin issues of this magnitude are often linked to the gut. I have yet to figure out how to fix this, although I do avoid caffeine, alcohol, and all forms of fun. Just kidding! I do notice that if I have alcohol, caffeine, or certain foods (chocolate, dairy) my skin sometimes is worse. It's not a strong correlation though... I've tried the gamut of naturopathic options and feel that they are all a bunch of hooey. They don't hurt though... but nothing has fixed my skin issues. The only supplement that I find useful is Omega 3 Fish Oil which is supposedly good for the skin, but I take it because it is amazeballs for helping my joint pain. Also, I drink lots of water, this is supposedly good for your skin.Doctors: I have had bad luck dealing with doctors with my skin. They really like to prescribe steroids, which are terrible in the long term and do not deal with the root cause. I don't know what the root cause is, but the doctors don't either! I will use steroids, especially on my scalp, in absolute emergency situations. The biggest thing that helps my reactions / eczema breakouts is the Eucerin Eczema Relief Cream. EVEN more than steroids, honestly! Recently, I've been trying metronidazole cream which my doctor prescribed to me for the facial rosacea. I don't like it because I feel like it's kind of drying and greasy at the same time, but am currently dealing with some rosacea quarantine breakouts that this has helped immensely with.If you made it to the end, thanks for reading! Hope you can find a tidbit that may help you :)
