Beauty Tips For Body Care
Warning: LongIngredients for each product at the bottom, in order of appearance!Skin type: Fitzpatrick IV & either oily or dry (will address later in the post).Current routine:AM:Wash with Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, pat dryNeutrogena Naturals Acne Spot TreatmentOmbrelle 60 SPF Ultra-Fluid Face Lotion sunscreen (only if I'm going outside [I know that's not advisable, read on to find out why I do it])PM:Wash with Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, pat dryNeutrogena Naturals Acne Spot Treatment(very bare bones routine, I know)MISC:I change my pillowcase every two nights, sleep on a fresh side each night. I do shower acrobatics so none of the stuff in my shampoo gets in my face. I use the regular red-cap Gilette shaving cream (only tingles for a little while, doesn't seem to have that great of an effect on my skin) and shave every night with a good non-burning razor before using the cleanser (started doing this in June, seems to really help with keeping me breakout-free). I keep my hair short and out of my face (had that long-hair period in 8th grade, around the height of my forehead acne). I rarely touch my face throughout the day. I don't pick at my skin or pop pimples. Sometimes I do get oily and duck into a public washroom to blot it out, more on that later in this post. Pics may or may not be coming soon, since I'm currently staying in a dim-lit basement apartment with mirrors only in the dimmer-lit rooms, and with only a 2 MP iPod camera to take pictures with. Diet doesn't seem to affect my acne. I cut down on dairy for a while, and that seemed to reduce it a little, but I have now reintroduced it to my diet and there's been no change, positive or negative. I wear glasses which I clean with alcohol-based lens cleaner each time before putting them on. I drink enough water pretty much every day, but sometimes I forget to/don't notice I'm thirsty. I usually break out a little those days. I've been to a derm once, but all that I got from them was a confirmation that what I had was indeed acne and not some obscure skin condition, and a prescription for accutane which my mother didn't let me get. I've never tried accutane or any prescription cream. Antibiotics helped for a little while (got prescribed them for an unrelated illness) but lost their effectiveness pretty quickly.-- Begin actual post --Hey, SCA! Mostly a complete newbie here, but ready & willing to learn! Thanks for giving my post a look. I'm a 17 year-old Canadian male going off to university in about two weeks, and I'm looking for a solid plan to improve my skin. My dad never got acne, but my mom did a lot. I've sadly inherited that part of my mom's genes. Asian acne is the worst.I started getting acne around 7th-8th grade (11-12 years old?), starting on my forehead. It used to be pretty mild, but in 9th grade it migrated down to my cheeks and flared up like hell, started getting big cysts. Thankfully, since then, my forehead has been left untouched and has no noticeable marks. By 10th grade it had mellowed out, though pimples also began appearing around my chest/neck/jawline, and pretty much stayed constant throughout 11th and most of 12th (with the exception of some appearing in, uh... private... areas in 11th :( ). In the summer before 12th grade, I began using sunscreen to mitigate PIH/redness, as suggested on the sub, and that has worked quite well! Now, in the summer before first year uni, I'm finally actually reading your posts properly and not skimming them in episodes of frustration and emo-ness like I used to. I've been paying attention to what affects my skin. I started using the routine above in mid-late June, and where I was getting 1-3 large cysts a week before, I now get maybe 1 large cyst a month (mostly around my neck/jaw area) and a lot smaller breakouts which are on their way out after a couple days using the spot treatment.I'm mainly looking for advice on three fronts:1) If you guys & gals have any general advice on how to improve my routine, I will listen with open ears. Explanations for why you're making suggestions is appreciated!2) Sunscreen. I've been sticking to Ombrelle (first used the Ultra-Light Cream 45 SPF, instead of the Ultra-Fluid Lotion 60 SPF) up until now because I've not heard anything bad about it, but something that just clicked in my idiot brain is that it both products I've used regularly do a couple of annoying things. First, they make my skin way oilier by the end of the day than normal. Second, they have a tendency to leak into my eyes with the oil they create, which stings a lot if I mess around with my glasses during the day or touch my eyes at all. I recently went on a two-week road trip where I wore the Ultra-Fluid Lotion every day (I usually stay in the house most of the time, and since it's a basement with very little light coming through the windows, I don't bother with the sunscreen most days because of the effects stated above) and noticed that my face broke out like it used to circa grades 10-11. Granted, it could have been that we were eating out for virtually every meal, but I do make an effort to balance my diet in terms of calories/nutrition, so I doubt that was it, since I wasn't eating too terribly (sorry for being graphic, but I observed my stool, I'd give it a B+). Does anyone have an idea as to why these sunscreens make me oily/sting my eyes/break me out, and what sunscreens are good as an alternative? Also, as Fitzpatrick IV, is 45+ SPF still a requirement for me if I want to mitigate PIH/redness?3) Moisturiser. If you'll notice, it's not a regular part of my routine. I've been staying in this basement apartment for the past month with my dad in lieu of our main house in another province, since it's closer to my university & blah blah other reasons. When I moved here, I did not bring my moisturiser because I'd forgotten about putting it on/that it even existed for a couple of weeks. Before that, I used to put it on every night before bed. I used Aveeno Active Naturals Clear Complexion Daily Moisturiser with salicylic acid. It always seemed to oil up my face more than normal when I used it in the day and could see what it did. (Sidenote: My skin really has me confused as to whether it's oily or dry or normal, since whenever I used/use moisturiser/sunscreen as per my routine, it's oily, but when I don't use either, I find it's sort of tight immediately after cleansing and starts feeling normal a few minutes after patting dry [but it still gets oily at the end of the day if I don't use moisturiser/sunscreen! Just less so]. I've only begun paying attention to that now, so maybe I'll update this post later.) I went out to Shopper's Drug Mart and bought Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturiser 15 SPF a couple of days ago on a whim, and it immediately broke me out all over (didn't patch test, I'm sorry, I'm new to this!!) after putting it on and going to bed with it. My skin was so oily that morning. Luckily, going back to the routine above has all the little spots it made on the way out now. Anyone have any ideas on what moisturiser would be best for me, and also why the Cetaphil broke me out? Thanks for reading this far!
