[Skin Concerns] Does retinol cause irreversible damage like this?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I started using retinol cream for like a week and a half, starting with my forehead, nose, and chin (just every night at first to two times a day and then back to every night) and started added it to the areas around my jawline and lower cheeks (every night). I have no idea what concentration it was, but it was RoC Correxion night cream in the tube. Everything was fine--I had slight purging in my chin area, so I thought I was feeling the worst of the retinol side effects. I should mention that I don't have particularly oily skin. Then one morning, I woke up with face an itchy jawline. Washed my face and moisturize. The next day, my face felt dried out, extremely taut. Thinking this might be a delayed reaction from the retinol (if it's possible), I stopped using the retinol cream so my skin could recover. It's been two weeks straight of just moisturizing with creams and argan oil with no success. Walking out of the shower no longer leaves me with supple skin, but extremely taut skin that needs to be moisturized immediately. Fearing further exfoliation, I stopped using any masks or exfoliation, thinking I should just ride it out, but I'm starting to worry that my skin won't bounce back from this after two weeks with little success. Anything I can do to hurry the process along or should I just get used to my new skin because it's here to stay?
