[Research] What do you guys think of the claim that lotions handicap our skin's natural ability to hydrate itself?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I feel like Ive been reading an article here or there about this being an issue. This morning on snapchat stories, I came across yet another one from Refinery29 (I know I know, it's not a science journal lol) - http://www.refinery29.uk/stopped-using-moisturiser-what-happened-resultsBasically the claim is that by slapping on increasingly hydrating creams over the course of our lives, we're making our skin lazy about hydrating itself. Soft skin in skin-negligent men is cited as an example of the human skin doing the work itself. What do you guys think about this?I'm in my late 20s and use both Cerave lotion and a bit of aquaphor at night (Cerave am in the morning). They feel good, but I wonder if I'm doing my skin a disservice.(Going to post this to AB as well, since asian skin care is so dedicated to providing hydration to skin.)
