[sun care] [review] Face Off: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light SPF 60 vs. Biore Rich Watery Essence 50+ PA+++

Beauty Tips For Body Care
This weekend I decided to test out my two favorite face-worthy sunscreens just to see how they compare side-by-side. I have used both products previously on my face and chest, and made my own observations, but I wanted to put them through their paces in some kind of quasi-scientific experiment to really evaluate them. Rather than testing on my face, I ran this experiment on my forearms and hands. As always, YMMV, and puns are intended. As a runner who wants to keep her face as rockin' as her bod (eye-roll, lol), it's important for me to have a high-quality SPF that does well in the heat and through a moderate amount of sweat. So what to choose? For the last few years I've been using Cerave's AM Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 or their SPF 50 Sunscreen. Both are good and non-irritating, but they tend to make me extra greasy when I sweat, and then I wipe my sweat and take the SPF with it, and I have ended up looking blotchy after a few hours in the sun, plus my eyes sting when the SPF sweat runs into my eyes. This year, I decided it was time to up my SPF game.I first tried out LRP's highly-rated Anthelios in March, and while I didn't get any burn, greasiness or stinging, my face did get a weird yellow powdery look to it after sweating. At first I thought maybe it was pollen sticking to my sweat (rawr), but when it still happened after a few runs (including on a treadmill), I knew it was the Anthelios. I did not get the weird yellowness when I wore it and did not sweat. After reading more reviews I saw that many people reported the same thing, and that it is most likely due to avobenzone, which they don't include in their European formulations. I guess I'm just glad it didn't stain my clothes, like some other users reported. Then in May I decided to give Biore a try, and I thought it was too good to be true! Cheaper, more effective sunscreen? Hooray! Seems to be working great, but the Watery Essence doesn't mention being waterproof. This past Sunday, I went for a 6 mile run (it was very sunny, around noon, and I was sweating). I covered my left arm and hand in LRP, ending around my elbow for a control. I did the same on my right with Biore. Both arms were the same color when I started (very pale, no or very little tan).I ended up being in the full sun for around an hour and a half. When my run ended, I noticed my left arm (LRP) did have the light yellowish tinge again. Not terrible, as my forearms aren't super sweaty, but still noticeable. The right arm (Biore) looked fine. After showering and cooling down, I did another comparison. Side-by-side, my right arm was slightly darker than my left! I would say that based on MAC shades, my left arm (LRP) was about NC20, and the right was NC25. I had been expecting similar sun protection on both arms, but it was noticeable to both me and my boyfriend that the Biore had not done quite as good a job as the LRP. They both still did a great job as compared to the parts of my arms that didn't get any coverage (ended close to MAC Powder Blush What I Fancy- I burned for science!). A few days later, both arms are pretty much the same shade, so I don't look as much like a FrankenBarbie. In conclusion, I would recommend the LRP Anthelios for days when you'll be outside but not sweating. I will be using the Biore on my face when I run, in addition to my trusty visor and sunglasses. I think the Biore came out slightly ahead because as much as I like maximum protection, running around town looking like Lisa Simpson isn't worth the minor amount of extra exposure. The race to find my HG sunscreen continues.
