Beauty Tips For Body Care
Background on my skin type:*dry, sensitive, acne prone*NC35-37*recently switched from differin to tazorac and acanya, so can be even more flaky and sensitive than i usually am! i avoid avobenzone and oxybenzone because they make my skin burn, seem to be okay with other chemical filters if the formula is moisturizing enoughI have tried soooo many physical sunscreens trying to find one that is cosmetically elegant, leaves minimal to no white cast, is non-drying, and doesn't break me out. I also avoid alcohol and fragrance. I've found some really good ones, but now that I'm using different topicals my skin has changed (more sensitive and flaky) and I'm searching again. I eventually started trying combination physical-chemical sunscreens because they tend to be more cosmetically elegant and for me, less drying and pore-clogging - will post those reviews another day. This has been such a frustrating process I'd thought I'd share my reviews on the ones I have tried for the people going through the same search! I've found some good ones and have recommendations for what I think would work well for oily and dry skin types.1) Cotz Sensitive SPF 40 ($19.99/3.5 oz, 20% zinc oxide)Pros:*No white cast*Doesn't break me out*Non-drying, very moisturizing and soothing. Does not emphasize dry patches. This worked for me when I was first adjusting to retinoid use and was a flaky mess*Works great under makeupCons:*Greasy/shiny finish, a little too emollientRecommended for dry, very dry skin2) Replenix Sheer Physical Sunscreen SPF 50+ (On Amazon $28.79/4 oz, 12% zinc oxide)Pros:*minimal to no white cast (may look slightly pale)*very cosmetically elegant, thin fluid - no alcohol!*non-drying, slightly hydrating*works okay under makeup. foundation will be a little bit patchy towards the end of the dayCons:*thin texture a little hard to apply. using proper amount, takes a while to sink in (I spread it all over my face and just chilled like a ghost for about 10 minutes until it absorbed some, then started to blend)*finish varies, sometimes this sinks in perfectly and can't tell i have anything on. other times this is shiny.*emphasizes dry flakes, not moisturizing enough for dry skin*not sure if causes breakoutsRecommended for slightly oily, combination, normal, slightly dry skin, avoid if you are dry to very dry and/or flaky3) Replenix Ultimatte Perfection SPF 50+ ($43/1.5 oz, tinted, 16.2% zinc)Pros:*no white cast, tint evens out skin tone nicely (this may be a con if you don't like tinted formulas, also the tint is better for those with warm skin tones)*cosmetically elegant, smoothing formula*non-drying, doesn't emphasize flakes*works okay under makeup, similar to silicone primer (included this as a pro but this may be a con if you are like me and silicone primers tend to make your makeup slide off later in the day)Cons:*silicone-heavy formula, feels heavy on my skin and I get oily underneath*breaks me out*expensive!Recommended for all skin types4) Replenix Sheer Physical Sunscreen Cream SPF 50 (On Amazon, $20.50/2 oz, 13.75% zinc)Pros:*no white cast*cosmetically elegant, creamy formula sets to powder-like finish (because it sets itself, i recommend applying in sections to face or it will pill)*works well under makeup*non-drying*doesn't break me outCons:*not moisturizing enough for me, powder finish makes my dry skin feel tightRecommended for oily, combination, normal, slightly dry skin5) Cotz Face SPF 40 (On Amazon, $19.49/1.5 oz, tinted, 8% titanium dioxide and 3.8% zinc oxide)Pros:*no white cast, tint evens out skin tone*works okay under makeup, pretty much a silicone primer (only okay for me, if you like silicone primers this may work even better)*non-drying*doesn't break me outCons:*if you are like me, sunscreens with more titanium can appear slightly grey and i get that slightly with this one so i don't like to wear it alone*silicone-heavy formula, feels heavy and I get oily*can emphasize dry/flaky patches*while non-drying, doesn't really offer any hydration, not moisturizing enough for my skinRecommended for all skin types, except very dry and flaky6) Jan Marini Physical Protectant SPF 45 (holy shit $51/2 oz, $40.80 on skinstore, slightly tinted, 6% titanium dioxide, 8% zinc oxide) P.S. I got mine on ebay for like $26Pros:*no white cast, tint very slightly evens skin tone but is not very noticeable. no grey cast either!*very cosmetically elegant, creamy formula blends easily and sets to comfortable matte finish even for dry skin that lasts all day*works well under makeup*non-drying (unless you are very dry!)Cons:*now that I'm more dry and sensitive, this is too matte and not moisturizing enough for me*slightly emphasizes flaky patches. however, this makes my flakes stick up versus laying them flat and still emphasizing them if that makes sense, easy for me to kind of pick them off*not sure if causes breakouts or if my skin type just changed too much to use this, did not cause them when i was less dry but may cause them now*expensive!Recommended for all skin types especially oily, combination, and normal, can work for slightly dry but probably too matte for dry to very dry7) Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 ($34/1.7 oz, tinted, 6% titanium dioxide and 5% zinc oxide)Pros:*thin, cosmetically elegant formula with no alcohol*umm not a white cast...Cons:*terrible grey cast! makes me look pale*stings for a while after application*very drying, emphasizes flakes*greasy/shiny finish despite not being very hydrating*something in this irritates me and breaks me outRecommended for oily, combination, normal skin8) Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF 50 ($42/1.7 oz, I got it for about $20 on ebay, lightly tinted, 7% titanium and 6% zinc)Pros:*slightly hydrating, non-drying*cosmetically elegant, thin fluid and no alcoholCons:*EXTREME WHITE CAST! this is tinted but i don't think it would work for anyone above NC30, and even when I was an NC30 in the winter this had a cast*shiny finish*breaks me out and feels heavy on the skin even though it is a fluid*emphasizes dry patchesRecommended for normal skin9) Bareminerals Prep Step Mineral Shield SPF 50 (On Amazon $24.34/1.35 oz, encapsulated pigments, 4.1% titanium and 23.8% zinc)Pros:*no white cast which was impressive for amount of zinc, evens skin tone slightly but not very noticeable*very cosmetically elegant, fluid formula and no alcohol*not drying at all, makes my skin feel softer by the end of the day*works well under makeupCons:*takes a lot of blending, which can emphasize flaky skin*shiny finish, have to blot*thin texture does not always provide enough moisture to dry patches*if i leave it on for more than 10 hours, I will break outRecommended for normal to dry, very dry skinCurrently using the Bareminerals as my former favorite Jan Marini is not moisturizing enough now that my skin is more dry, sensitive and flaky
