Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm totally new to this sub and can't wait to get started. That being said I noticed we don't really have a shaving wiki here, but all the info is present (on reddit at least). I'd advise anyone with shaving issues to go to r/wickededge. Those guys are all pros and have helped me with my skin just by changing my shaving habits!I'd like to share a little of what I've learned.. Shaving consists of 3 things; the blade, lubrication and technique.1) BladesModern day razors pack in as many blades as possible to get you "the closest shave", but this is only for those with resilient skin, because the first blade or two removes all the lubrication applied and then the following 3+ blades are dry shaving your skin. The thought behind this is that you can take 5 strokes in one pass, and charge you way more. Before "modern" razors our grand parents used double edge razors (DE). Note I've left out strait razors as they are more of a hobby shave than anything of practicality. The beauty of DE razors are that there is only one blade on your skin at a time because that's all you need. The single blade gets all the lubrication needed and you can control how many passes are taken to get the desired shave. There are two great bonus's to this.. the blades are DIRT CHEAP and there are many of them out there to try out what you like best. I bought about 200 blades for $12US. Lastly, some razors even have adjustable angles of attack, they are called adjustable saftey razors, go figure huh? I use one on my sensitive neck, it allows you to adjust the angle of the blade and gap between the blade and razor.2)LubricationMention you use a modern canned foam shaving cream and the guys at wicked edge will go nuts. That doesn't mean all canned foams are bad, but there is obviously much better options. I've switched to a hard soap and brush to apply a nice perfect lather than gets under the whiskers each time. This stuff lasts long and isn't all that expensive. Best part is there are lots of good scents! Lastly I'll mention shaving oils. There seems to be a good amount of debate on these but from my experience with them I like to add oil before applying shaving cream. The thought being that It adds an extra slick little layer of protection for your skin. Some boast it works, others complain it clogs their razors. But it exists either way.3)TechniqueNo matter what shaving equipment you use, technique can make or break a shave. Shaving your face can be harder a task than say your legs where all the hair is pointed in one direction. Some recommend creating a "hair map" almost like a topographical map of where your hair is pointed and how it "flows". The idea behind this being, as many know, never shave against the grain. At least not at first. The direction of a shave can cause irritation from pulling hair and skin upward to be cut and causing ingrown hairs. It's important to start by shaving with the grain first. Re-lather, then I shave at a 90-45 degree angle to the grain in both directions, lathering between each pass. There are many articles/videos/etc on proper shaving technique, soaps to use, brushes to use and much more. But this is my best quick rundown I could provide during a lunch break. Changing to a DE razor is a bit of an investment at first but it saves you tons of cash and irritation in the long run. I've since reduced my neck irritation 10 fold. I hope this helps!
