[Misc] Traveling with my routine: What worked and what didn't

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just posted this on r/AsianBeauty, but thought it might generate some interesting discussion here too.I travel a lot, but usually it's for a long enough period of time that I check a bag and put all of my skincare in it (minus a few moisturizing layers to keep on the plane with me). This time, however, it was just a quick one-week business trip with a carry on bag only. This was really my first time having to TSA-proof my routine, and I've definitely learned a few lessons for the future! For context, I have dry skin that leans dehydrated at times, and am also acne-prone and have some PIE and PIH. I live in a cool, damp climate, and traveled to a hot, dry one. Here's what I left the house with:Oil cleanser: Rosehip seed oil. I usually use Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil, but didn't have a spare container on hand to decant into, so I decided to go with good old-fashioned OCM2nd Cleanser: Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser (in its original container, about 3/4 empty)Actives: Skinoren 20% Azaleic AcidToner: Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion, decanted into a 30ml glass bottle with a dropperEssence: Benton Snail Bee High Content EssenceFacial Oil: Rosehip Seed Oil (yay multiple uses for one product!)Sheet Mask: Innisfree Real Squeeze in Rose and Tea TreeMoisturizers: Stratia Liquid Gold, Missha Near Skin Total Ceramide CreamSunscreen: Missha All Around Safe Block Essence SunOcclusive: CeraVe Healing OinmentWhat Worked:Layering the hydrating products I brought and using the two sheet masks saved my skin the first two nights of my trip. I was dealing with a lot of post-flight and climate-related dryness and dehydration, and was lacking my Cosrx Galactomyces Alcohol-Free Toner and my Scinic Honey AIO. So I did 3 layers of Hada Labo + 2 of Benton HCE and a layer of rosehip seed oil and put a sheet mask over the top (rose the first night and tea tree the second night). I also topped it all off with a thick layer of CeraVe Healing Ointment after the Stratia LG and my moisturizer. I did not use my azaleic acid the day after my flight, and by the second day, I was hydrated enough that I was able to reintroduce it (which was great, because I also erupted in cystic acne along my jaw from stress/hormones). The rosehip seed oil worked really well for removing makeup, and I feel like it was a safe choice because I use it as a facial oil and know it doesn't break me out. What Didn't Work:I made a very basic rookie mistake and packed my Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser in its original bottle, assuming that even though the packaging was 177ml (the limit is 100ml) that security would be fine with it because I only had about a quarter of the product left. I bet wrong, and my cleanser was confiscated at security. RIP. Frantically trying to figure out what to use, I ended up having to stop at the duty free shop, because I knew that the country I'm visiting pretty much only has Neutrogena cleansers and they're all too stripping for me. I ended up going for Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Milk, and kept hoping it wouldn't cause any problems. The new cleanser didn't break me out, but it definitely felt more drying than my Milky Jelly Cleanser, and I'm not sure how necessary it actually ended up being, since it's mainly marketed as a makeup remover, and I already had the rosehip seed oil for that. I've ordered a new MJC, and hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow, and I can gift the Clinique one to my mom, who loves their products.I had two flights: one that was an hour, and one that was about 4.5 hours. I'm used to long haul flights, and because this was shorter, I didn't put CeraVe Healing Ointment on during the flight. This was definitely a mistake, and my skin felt much drier than usual after I landed. On my return flight tomorrow, I'm going to slug it up for sure. Finally, when I was packing, I had to choose between Benton Snail Bee HCE and Scinic Honey AIO. The Benton is more brightening to me, while the Scinic is more hydrating. I chose the Benton, and I think I chose wrong. My skin hadn't been super dry lately, and I thought I would need the brightening effect from the Benton more than I would need the hydration from the Scinic. I guess I underestimated the dry climate and how much the flight would dry me out, and I really wish I had brought the Scinic instead even though the container I decanted it into is slightly larger than the Benton. The Benton just isn't that great of a hydrator, and wasn't the multitasker I wanted it to be.Final Thoughts:This was not bad for a first attempt at packing skincare in a carry-on. I've definitely learned my lesson about decanting, and will never repeat that same mistake. I've also realized not to underestimate dryness while traveling, and that it's probably best to ignore other skin concerns while traveling and just focus on hydration. I'm looking forward to coming home to my own cleanser and a hydrating mask tomorrow!
