[Misc] A PSA to ALL Accutane Users in the US

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello. My name is Madeline and I am a pharmacy tech. And I would like to clear up a few things.Accutane, as many of you know, is a drug used in cases of severe acne. It’s very effective for many people, but it also comes with some pretty intense side-effects, including kidney failure and a very, very high chance of birth defects in people who can get pregnant. In the US, there is a program called iPledge that anybody and everybody who wants to take Accutane must complete every single month that they pick up their prescription. There are two parts that have to be completed - one that the dermatologist must fill out, and one that the patient must complete. For people who can get pregnant, this means monthly blood draws and pregnancy tests. It also means being on two forms of birth control. It is somewhat more complicated than it is for people who cannot get pregnant.HOWEVER.Everybody, and I mean everybody, has to complete iPledge, every single month. I don’t care if “you’re a boy”. You still have to do it, and your doctor has to do it. Every time a prescription comes into the pharmacy for isotretinoin, I have to get the patient’s iPledge ID and DOB and go onto the website to get a authorization number to fill it.“But Mads!” you ask, “obviously we know this!” Well, in the past two weeks I have been bitched out by multiple people, including some nurse from a derm’s office, who insisted that they didn’t have to do iPledge because the patient is a boy. THIS IS FALSE. EVERYONE HAS TO DO IPLEDGE.I actually know very little about iPledge beyond what I have to do to fill a prescription for it. I’m just saying, you have to do it every month. They only allow thirty-day fills, and I hope that this clears up any confusion about the program, because apparently even a dermatologist’s nurse can’t even figure it out.
