Beauty Tips For Body Care
(mobile post)I was browsing this sub, and came across a post that mentioned the oral acne medication MINOCYCLINE.While I have heard several good things about this medication, I, personally, had one of the worst experiences with it. I searched the sub for other Minocycline posts, and did not see this mentioned as a side effect, which is why I want to bring awareness!tl;dr at the bottomAt the end of July 2017, I got prescribed Minocycline, as well as RetinA, for my acne. I took it daily, and did see some improvement by September of the same year. Around the middle of September, I formed a headache that I could not shake. For 7 days it progressed, into—what I believed at the time—a migraine. By the 8th day, it was unbearable. I went to the hospital, where I was given Morphine, and examined. The doctor ordered a CT scan, which came back completely normal, then prescribed me some pain killers, and sent me on my way. A day and a half later, I was back in the hospital for the migraine. After more testing, the doctor mentioned that I could possibly have a brain tumor, but first, I needed to get my eyes checked. The following day, I visited my regular eye doctor. He dilated my eyes, and found that my optic nerves were dangerously swollen. He told me that he agreed with the hospital: A brain tumor. Before he could absolutely confirm, he suggested that I see an ophthalmologist who can perform more extensive testing. About 5 days later, I visit the ophthalmologist, who agrees with the people before him. He prescribed me Diamox for the optic nerve swelling, and refers me to the only neuro-ophthalmologist in the state. Keep in mind, we are still thinking it is a brain tumor. From the time I saw the ophthalmologist to seeing the neuro-ophthalmologist, I lost the function of using both of my eyes at once. I lost large portions of my memory, the ability to speak clearly, and all of my energy. Another hospital visit took place in between, several tests (MRI, MRE, CT), as well as a follow up with my physician. No one knew what was going on, but assumed it was a brain tumor... Until, my mother began to Google the side effects of all of the medication I was taking. It turns out, Minocycline can cause a rare side effect called Psuedotumor Celebri—A spinal pressure build up that mimics a brain tumor. At the neuro-ophthalmologist appointment, I finally got diagnosed with the exact condition . At that point, I was wearing an eye patch full-time, and had developed a severe case of a lazy eye, BUT, it wasn’t a specific eye: I could switch between which eye was lazy. This was all credited to Minocycline. The neuro-ophthalmologist began treating me right away. I was taken off the Minocycline completely. A couple of days later, I started seeing a neurologist, to look after my brain, and help me get on a medication to restore my brain function. My neurologist noticed that the left side of my face was not keeping up with my right side. He explained that the effects of Minocycline were too extreme, and he booked me in for a spinal tap at a nearby hospital. I had the spinal tap, and after the 24 hr. recovery time, I felt more like myself. It took about a month of the medication and spinal tap to get me on the right track. I slowly gained my vision back, and I was lucky to regain the ability to speak fluidly. I did not have such luck with my memory, as I did not fully regain it.But, it was not over, as Psuedotumor Celebri is a chronic illness. The illness comes and goes. After 5 months of feeling better, it came back. I started my treatment again. I am now going strong, until it comes back. My neurologist says that this will continue the rest of my life, and the biggest risk is completely losing my eye sight.I wasn’t aware of the potential side effects of Minocycline. I surely wasn’t aware that it could cause something to this extent. To conclude, PLEASE discuss the possible side effects of oral acne medication with your doctor! It may save you weeks of confusion and trauma. YES, this is a rare side effect, but without people posting about their experience online, I do not know what would have happened. Thanks Minocycline :-)TL;DR: Minocycline caused my brain to develop a fake-tumor, which led to a chronic illness.
