[PSA] My new bottle of CeraVe lotion smelled like disgusting fish, so I called their customer service line and here’s what happened

Beauty Tips For Body Care
A few weeks ago, I bought a 12oz bottle of CeraVe’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion at Target. I’ve used this for about five years, so I knew what to expect. A few days go by, I finish my old bottle, and I bust out the new one and slather it on per usual. The smell was...not good. Just smelling the open bottle, everything was normal (odorless). Dollop on my hand, nothing of note. Start spreading it around though, and gag, it genuinely smells like fish. Not even fresh fish. Gross. I push through maybe two weeks of use (maybe they changed the formula? Maybe I’d just never noticed it before? Holy sh** am I pregnant again???) before deciding to call CeraVe to see what could be done.I called the customer service line on their website today and spoke to a very nice rep (good job, Alexis, if you’re out there reading!). She assured me that the formulation had not changed and that there was no reason it should smell like anything, and certainly not like fish. She asked me where I’d bought it (Target) and what size it was (couldn’t remember the exact volume, so I told her it was the biggest bottle they had). She asked me how much I’d paid for it and I said I couldn’t remember, I didn’t have the receipt. I did have the lot number from the bottle, though (I’d taken a picture before I left the house today). So I gave that to her and she said she could use it to look up some of the information! I’m guessing it allowed her to see what size bottle it was. She asked if I thought I’d spent about $13-$15 and I said yes.So what happens next is, I’m going to get a $10 coupon and a $5 coupon in the mail. She did mention briefly that they’re only good for one transaction, but what I think she meant was they wouldn’t stack. At least the $10 coupon will get me close to a new bottle. She projected they’d arrive within 3-4 weeks, possibly sooner depending on my area.Interestingly, she said they’d also mail me a prepaid label and envelope so I could send the defective bottle back. She said they’d send it to the lab for inspection to see what the cause was, whether it was improper storage by the store (so they could contact them), or a bad batch, or what. This may just be a tactic to prevent me from using up a good bottle and still getting coupons, but I at least liked the idea that they would be looking at it!I know there are others out there who have had this fishy issue, based on their website reviews as well as a couple posts here on reddit. If you’ve had a bad bottle, it might be worth calling to recover at least a little of your money versus just throwing it out. (Returning it to the store might be successful too, obviously, but this is the route I chose to go.)
