It’s a bit pricier than other TJ skincare items (the Oil Free Moisturizer is $5.99 for 6oz), but “expensive for Trader Joe’s” is still pretty damn affordable (for instance, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel is ~$15 for 1.7oz).I’ve been testing this out for about a week now, so this is more of a first impressions than a true review. Generally I like to finish a product before reviewing it - that way I can work past the shiny-new-thing phase - but since this is a new release I thought people would appreciate some pics & such :) Texture & scent: A nice gel-cream; has that light musty scent typical of ‘natural’ moisturizers, but only if you really stick your nose in the jarYep, it’s a gel Packaging: Sturdy frosted plastic jar with cute lil moons on it, and the cap has a metal outer rim which I think is pretty neat. Comes with an inner lid you could store a lil skincare spatula on if you’re so inclined. Imo, this looks and feels way nicer than your standard white plastic jar with a label slapped on it.Packaging Experience: For reference, my skin type is generally ‘normal’ - it’s a bit dry right now, and it gets somewhat oily in the summer. Usually not sensitive, although I do have some irritation goin' on.This feels...soft, almost whipped. Definitely more of a gel-cream than a super thin gel. It applies with a good amount of slip, making it easy to spread in a thin layer. For what it's worth, the slip doesn't feel overly silicone-y and it does go away on the dry down. It's actually pretty moisturizing, which was a pleasant surprise for someone not normally a fan of gels. I do find that it dries down a bit slowly, but a thin layer leaves a beautiful velvety finish with no shine whatsoever. However, thicker layers don’t seem to dry down at all - instead, they just get tacky. I really like to goop on moisturizers so I was unhappy with the school glue vibe, but whatever, I guess I just have to practice moderation or something.Application picsI use this primarily as an AM moisturizer and find it sufficiently up to the task of moisturizing my normal-dry skin without being greasy or shiny - it’s a bit early to tell, but I can see this as my new AM moisturizer for the warmer months! Layers well under sunscreen and powder, even when I've applied a whole lot.And it works pretty well in my PM routine too - I don’t notice any real difference using it (I use aquaphor ffs, nothing else really matters), but it’s nice to apply and it layers well both over and under other moisturizers. Using multiple layers of the Hydrating Gel Moisturizer doesn’t cause it to pill or gunk up, and any tackiness goes away if you apply moisturizer (or sunscreen) over it.I think a wide range of skin types would like this - I imagine it’d be a comfortable & moisturizing PM moisturizer for those with oily skin, and it makes for a great AM moisturizer for normal to slightly dry skin.Overall, this has exceeded my expectations - it’s decently moisturizing, it’s super soft, and it has a nice velvety finish. However, it does have a slightly long (imo) dry down time, and very thick layers get annoyingly tacky. But hey, $8.99! Other reviews:[PSA] New moisturizer at Trader Joes - Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer - u/dlilmmm (which shows the importance of reading multiple reviews, because OP found it to sink in quickly whereas I consider it a bit slow - ymmv!)Trader Joe’s Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer - Become BettyTrader Joe's announcement post (not really a review, but whatever) Rating: 7.5/10
