Beauty Tips For Body Care
I found this when I was reading Skin Aging Handbook.Note: L-selenomethionine(L-SM) is the organic form of selenium.1 . More powerful than reinoid acid in reversing photoagingTopical L-selenomethionine is highly effective not only in preventing but also in reversing photoaging. After mice were exposed to UVB for 6 weeks and photoaging was clinically and histologically confirmed, the skin was treated with placebo, topical retinoic acid (0.05 percent) (the “ gold standard ” of reversing photoaging of the skin), and topical L- selenomethionine (0.02 percent). Parameters of photodamage were evaluated histologically: Epidermal thickness, hyperkeratosis, collagen disruption, and solar elastosis. The L-selenomethionine was equal or more effective in reversing each of these manifestations of photoaging than the retinoic acid.Reversal of photoaging was also demonstrated by clinical observation of improvement in periorbital wrinkles in ten women (aged 55 to 72), treated for 4 months with daily application of topical L-selenomethionine (0.05 percent). All patients improved. The significant decrease in periorbital wrinkles of a 77-year-old volunteer can be seen in Figure 8.11.Figure 8.11Ref:Skin Aging HandbookBurke, K.E. “ Method for prevention and reversal of the extrinsic aging of the skin by transdermal application of selenamino acids and compositions therefore. ” US Patent no. 5,330,757, July 19, 1994.2 . Provides some protection against UVTopical L-SM, on the other hand, protected skin from UVR in a small, vehicle-controlled study in healthy women (N=8) (41). Subjects first applied lotion containing vehicle followed by increasing concentrations of L-SM (0.002%, 0.02%, and 0.05%) to their lower backs once each evening in two-week increments for a total of eight weeks; subjects were exposed to UVB during a morning appointment every two weeks of the dosing schedule. Blood was drawn on day 1 and day 56 (the end of the treatment period) to assess potential systemic absorption of selenium through the skin. Topical L-SM dose-dependently increased the MED compared to vehicle treated skin. Although studies in hairless mice demonstrated that topical SM reaches the systemic circulation and increases skin, plasma and liver selenium (27), the small doses used in this human study did not influence the concentration of plasma selenium after six weeks of daily application.Ref:https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/health-disease/skin-health/minerals3 . Reduces total cancer incidence and mortalityIn a 10-year prospective study of 1312 patients with a history of basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas of the skin, oral selenium supplementation of 200 µg/day did not protect against further development of such skin cancers; however, it did reduce total cancer incidence (by 37 percent) and the incidence of lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer (by 45 percent to 58 percent, and 63 percent respectively) as well as total cancer mortality (by 50 percent).Ref:Skin Aging HandbookClark, L.C., G.F. Combs, and B.W. Turnbull, et al., “ Effects of selenium supplementation for cancer prevention in patients with carcinoma of the skin. ” J Am Med Assoc 276:1057 – 1063, 1996.No skincare product contains this ingredient. In fact, no one is talking about it. This is even noted in a recent paper(2018).Few studies have focused on the protective role of selenium (Se) against skin aging and photoaging even though selenoproteins are essential for keratinocyte function and skin development.(Side note: That paper found that taking selenium supplement is effective against UVA damage and that elderly needs much higher doses than young people.)At the very least, this can replace retinoid acid as it is potentially more powerful and doesn't cause photosensitivity(in fact it protects you from photodamage). It doesn't get into your blood. If it does get in, you get protection against cancer lol. Yes there are supplements available. But where are the skincare products?
