[Acne] Hormonal acne - is there another way?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone! First time posting in this sub so apologies if I'm breaking any rules.I [23F] only had mild acne throughout adolescence, then randomly in the summer of 2017 when I was 21 I started to get huge, painful zits all around my lower face and jawline. I felt disgusting and unattractive, not to mention the physical pain. It would get worse during certain times of the month, but usually persisted in some form 100% of the time.In June of 2018 I went on the birth control pill for unrelated reasons, and after 2-3 months my acne went away completely. Cool, there's some validation that it was for sure hormonal in cause. However I am a naturally anxious person and the pill made my anxiety skyrocket to the point where it was affecting my life and relationships, so in October 2019 I decided to stop taking it. I feel way better emotionally, but unfortunately last week, right before my second period since I went off the pill, my acne came back full-force.My face feels greasy, clogged, and all-around gross, like it's in a prime state for the absolute worst and most painful kind of acne.Is there a way of getting rid of hormonal acne that doesn't also mess with my emotions? My roommate started on Spironolactone recently and she says it makes her cry every day - I know it's different for every person, but that's not a risk I'm willing to take right now. I've read that no topical method will work on hormonal acne since the cause is internal; is that true? And if so, how long should I expect to deal with this before I "grow out" of it? (Side note: why the hell did this not start happening until I was 21?!)There's a several-month wait for the dermatologist at my doctor's office so I'm posting here. Thank you in advance!
