[PSA] My definitive guide to never having chapped lips again (From someone who's had them A LOT)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Last winter my lips got so bad they'd regularly bleed every time I laughed or smiled. My lips showed more white nasty flakies on the surface than actual skin. And this lasted for MONTHS with no end in sight. Not a fun memory.I decided to spend a bunch of time trialing products and researching what my lips need and I've seen a night and day difference with my lips this winter. I thought I'd share what has worked for me and what hasn't.What didn't work:- Any generic lip balm from the drugstore - they would help for 5 minutes and then it's like I never put them on- EOS lip balm. I love the look and smell of this stuff, but seriously it's so useless. I think it actually made things worse.- Matte lip colors. I was really into lipsticks and I think using matte colors is part of what got my lips to the painful point they ended up at- Balms with anything peppermint flavor, or with menthol or camphor. (Looking at you, Carmex -_-) - these ingredients all acted as irritants on my lips which just made things worse. I don't know why people put them in lip balms to begin with.- Just vaseline with nothing under it. Vaseline is a powerful occlusive, however if you apply it alone it won't do anything because it doesn't have moisturizing propertiesWhat worked (In order of effectiveness:- Lanolin. This was probably the most important thing I tried. All the online guides say to stay away from it because it can trigger irritation, however this is based on an outdated study that used faulty methods but people still like to cite it. Seriously, unless you have a very rare allergy, lanolin is your friend. I use the lanolin nipple cream from Amazon (It's 100% pure lanolin, just marketed as nipple cream) and it's the most soothing thing ever. Lanolin is amazing because it's very occlusive - it locks moisture in, but it also brings its own moisturizing power to your lips, unlike vaseline.- Laniege lip mask. Some people have had more success with this than others - I've only had good experiences with it. I use it every single night before bed and it really helps protect my lips from being chapped over night. I even got my boyfriend into using it every night.- La Roche Posay B5 Baume. It's intended for your face but I tried it on my lips and oh my gosh it helps. It leaves a thick white coating but that disappears within 10 minutes. My favorite application is to wet my lips just a bit, immediately apply the B5 Baume (this locks in the water on my lips) and then cover that with Aquaphor or vaseline. That way I get moisturizing power and lock it in with an occlusive. I do this every morning and usually don't need to apply more chapstick until noon.- Once a week exfoliation. Sometimes the flakies just build up and you've got to smooth your lips back down. Don't over do it, more than twice and week and you're exfoliating too much. You can use any exfoliant, I like the Kismet Sugar Lip Scrub.- Making my own lip balm. I got so fed up with the Eos and Carmex crap (Seriously, why is menthol is so many lip products?) that I started making my own. I can add the full recipe in the comments if people are interested, but basically I just melt beeswax, shea butter, vitamin e oil, olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil together and voila, DIY lip balm.- Swapping lip sticks for moisturizing lip glosses Look, I'm a lip color addict - I've got to have something on my lips. But I realized lip sticks, matte or not, were not doing my lips any favors and my lips just looked terrible after a few hours of wear. Now I use lip glosses with moisturizing ingredients and my lips are so much happier when I go out.- Using a humidifier overnight. Winter dry air is the chapping culprit, so this really helped cut down on flaking chapping lips (I started this a few months after the Laniege mask BTW)- And finally - I just started using this, but CeraVe Healing Ointment. I tried it on my lips a couple days ago and it felt like buttery, melty heaven. And my lips looked sooo plump! I'll definitely be adding this to my rotation.Hope this helped guys, here's to a 2020 of soft, moisturized lips!
