Empty bottles!Skin type: Acne prone, naturally oil but also some dryness. A bit pathetic, but not sensitive.Skin concerns (at the time of these reviews): Targeting redness and scarring, not aggravating acne, not provoking oiliness, being gentle, hydration without oiliness.Philosophy Purity Made Simple (ingredients: https://www.philosophy.com/purity-made-simple.html)This cleanser gets some negativity on this sub - I presume it is the long list of ingredients. However, this is the most straight-forward, inoffensive cleanser I have ever used. It is gentle and boring. It is not drying. I can get it in my mouth or my eyes and I taste and feel nothing. It's only when I try to use another cleanser, open my eyes to look at what I am doing, and find that it stings that I remember how unique these features are. It comes in enormous bottles (bigger than the one pictured which I bought on sale) that last me over a year (I pour small quantities into a small pump bottle), which makes it far cheaper than anything else I've used. It is not 100% effective at eye make-up removal, and because they claim it removes make-up I consider this a downside. But I do not expect a simple face cleanser to remove mascara.I have been using this for years and as much as I longingly look at alternatives sometimes, I expect to keep using it. With various samples / hotel emergencies etc I have compared this with DE Jelly Cleanser (drying, smells weird); Clinique For Men Oil Control face wash (unnecessarily harsh because ~men~); and Fresh Soy Face Cleanser which I actually want because it smells of cucumbers, but it is far less economical. Will 100% repurchase when I run out in three years, unless something outrageous happens.Feels like: a creamy/silky, light soap. Not foamy. Has a very mild, soapy, but not too chemical fragrance.Packaging: Perfect - large bottles = minimal waste; I can pour out every last drop.Effectiveness: Does everything I want and NOTHING ELSE.Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water (pink) (ingredients: https://www.garnier.ca/en-ca/about-our-brands/skin-care/skinactive/micellar-cleansing-water/garnier-skinactive-allin1-micellar-cleansing-water-for-all-skin-types-even-sensitive-700-ml)I don't think there's too much I can say about this thing everybody uses. I can't believe such an effective make-up remover exists and I spent so many years of my life scrubbing my eyelids, but here we are. I don't use this everyday because I don't need to, but it is completely effective and easy and works well enough on these reusable (bamboo?) pads I've got.I see people talking about more expensive versions of micellar water and I'm really curious about what they can offer in addition to drugstore brands... but I won't spend more to find out. This is a staple and I'm sure I'll always have one in my supplies, especially for traveling. It lasts a while because I don't use it very often! Will repurchase as a cheap and very effective eye make-up remover for occasional use. $7.99CAD/400mlFeels like: Water! Possibly has a mild fragrance but I don't really notice it.Packaging: Annoying cap, but fine - it works.Effectiveness: 100%The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% (ingredients: https://theordinary.deciem.com/product/rdn-ascorbic-acid-8pct-alpha-arbutin-2pct-30ml)I bought this in my first (of three) experimental hauls from The Ordinary and, as you can see, I actually finished it (leftover from that batch at the moment remain my G.Acid toner and Niacinamide / Zinc). I chose this Vit C formulation originally because, I think, I did not want a silicone or a powder and I believe I read at some point that Ascorbic Acid was a 'good' version of Vit C(????). My plans with this were to target redness from acne (mostly PIH), and promote general healing. After some experimentation, I applied this in the morning after cleansing, before moisturising, because I read that combining Vit C w/sunscreen somehow amplifies the protection from both, and because I do not like to load up my night time routine with too many actives. This lasted the equivalent of a few months of daily use. With no control condition I cannot say for certain but I believe this product was associated with improving redness, while I was using it. It also did not cause any irritation or any other problems. I was mildly frustrated with the formulation for feeling oily, and I found it was not always easy to layer, especially under moisturiser + sunscreen + whatever make-up...I have used only one other Vit C serum (from LRP, which includes salicylic acid) so have little to compare this with. It is, obviously, a fraction of the price of most other Vitamin C serums. At the moment I have cut most things from my routine while I adapt to Differin. However, if/when I incorporate Vitamin C again, it will probably be this one. I am only about 70% happy with the experience of using it, but the price (+ efficacy) makes it a no-brainer. If I find another product that combines different ingredients so I can reduce the number of steps, I might consider that instead. Will most probably repurchase in the future. $10CAD/30mlFeels like: Slightly oily, thin and watery. Easy to spread. Not perfectly layerable. No noticeable fragrance.Packaging: Droppers are great for accuracy, but you do have to pour out the last drops right into your hand. They are also small bottles but for something like Vit C I guess you don't want it sitting around for 8 months.Effectiveness: Honestly who can say? My instinct is it made small but real improvements to my acne-related redness. The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil (ingredients: Rosa Canina Seed Oil)Also purchased as a part of my first TO haul. I bought this because I wanted to add oil(s) to my routine as an occlusive step at night for extra hydration/preventing water loss. I chose this one due to good reviews (here) and due to the linoleic acid content which is apparently desirable for those of us with acne-prone skin. For comparison, in the past I have used generic olive oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil on my face. (Why?????)Over all I really liked the RHS oil! I like the slightly earthy smell (it is definitely there), and I found it felt like it absorbed somewhat as well as providing a 'layer'. I definitely felt my skin felt softer and more hydrated the morning after using this stuff, and I experienced no adverse effects. I found it to be very versatile - for a while I tried using it under my moisturiser after seeing that recommended here, and I liked that too. I also mixed a drop in with foundation in the morning for spreadability and hydration, and that worked pretty well, as well. Despite spilling from the bottle TWICE, this lasted me a good while (months) of using 2-3 drops per night. Compared to other oils it did not feel heavy and it felt like it did not merely provide an occlusive - it may be imaginary but this feels like it does something more which is consistent with claims I see elsewhere, and with TO calling it a 'support formula'.At the same time as I was using this, I was also using TO squalane which is not an oil but like an oil. The RHS is heavier, but to me feels like it absorbs a little better, and does more. As per, the price is incomparable to any other face oils. This was the first TO product I definitely knew I would want to keep using, and when I stabilise my routine I intend to re-introduce this as a PM step. Will repurchase. $9.90CAD/30mlFeels like: Oil, but not too heavy. Quite spreadable. Creamy. Smells funky.Packaging: As above, but also I knocked this over A LOT and did not lose too much so I guess that's a plus.Effectiveness: Did what I wanted and more, no complaints.LANEIGE Water Bank Moisture CreamI have only once bought anything from LANEIGE, but I have received eight million samples from Sephora, and I'm always happy to get them. I find anything from LANEIGE with 'water' in its name really lives up to expectation and feels incredibly hydrating and luscious. This was a decent sized sample and I used it for a while, preferring to use it at night, after cleansing, as a 'first' hydrating moisturiser before more occlusive products. I have also in the past received many samples of the Water Sleeping Mask.Experiencially, I prefer the sleeping mask. The moisture cream feels a tiiiiny bit too heavy for me, even though it still felt pretty velvety and hydrating. However, I suspect - but cannot prove - it broke me out a tiny bit, or was part of a fatal combination that I did not enjoy. Not true of the sleeping mask, which just feels like a drink for your face. Moreover, as much as I like it a lot, I wouldn't pay full price for this product given my concerns ($50CAD/50ml on Sephora). I would accept further samples! Will not repurchase.Feels like: Luxurious cream, light but thick? No real fragrance to speak of, except 'clean'.Packaging: This little tube is non-ideal but the small jars they usually use are actually really nice - easy to get out all product and very re-usable. There is of course a dipping-fingers problem.Effectiveness: A nice hydrating-feeling moisturiser but not 100% convinced. The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived SqualaneWhat is squalane? This weird little slippery thing. Another part of my original TO haul, I have enjoyed using squalane in all sorts of ways, but still don't really know what it is for.I bought this due to positive reviews and the idea that it could be used like an oil but it is not actually an oil.I tried it like an oil, as an occlusive after moisturiser at night. I tried mixing it with moisturiser, and with makeup, for fun. It is light and spreadable but for me did not always feel like it was absorbed. To compare directly with the rose hip seed, squalane is lighter, unscented, more slippery, and feels more like it sits on the skin than going in. I did not like it mixed with foundation -- too oily.Where I found this excels is as a 'moisturiser extender'. I found that a couple of drops added to moisturiser, in your hand, makes said moisturiser spread much more easily and go much further (in my case I am using FAB Ultra Repair Cream). This is particularly useful as a body moisturiser if you don't want to use a full handful of product for a large surface area. I stopped using it or any other purpose and ended up finishing my bottle this way.I can't say that 'moisturiser extender' is an essential part of my skincare arsenal. However, it is so cheap that I might buy it again anyway, because as it turns out I used it all up and I was very impressed with how it allowed me to stretch my other products.I recommend squalane if you want a weird moisturiser extender, OR, if you want something like an oil that is not an oil, but which is light and inoffensive, and you don't mind a lightly oily feeling. Will think about repurchasing as an affordable non-essential. $7.90CAD/30mlFeels like: Wet, slippery, silky oil. No smell.Packaging: As above re: TO.Effectiveness: Depends what you want to use it for but I was pretty happy with the use I settled on.Note: all prices exclude taxes, you Canadian scammers.<3
