This suggestion is based on the BIGGEST of MAN FACES to ensure that everyone else's face sizes are covered. I was compelled to do some digging for some alternative information bc I'm a pore. (; ̄ェ ̄)Michelle's ChartFrom here. Lab Muffin did some investigating to find out how much of 1/4 tsp she needed for her face. I reckon my face is of similar size to hers. From Altruist's FAQThe dermatologist who created Altruist suggests having Clown Face is enough before sunscreen sinks in. ଵ˛̼ଵhttps://preview.redd.it/k3t5as1for351.png?width=712&format=png&auto=webp&s=fbffe6e328f3f5ac30c3acc7de09e05fb90347e6From here. I've lurked on Ratzilla's blog for years and this is how much the companies she is translating for suggests pretty much every time. I guess this is the Japanese standard? 「(°ヘ°)So I measured out how big a 1 yen coin would be. Has science gone too far?1 yen has a diameter of 20 mm. I found that it hits the highest and lowest hand wrinkles(?). I have small hands for reference.Anessa perfect milk - layer 1 - I eyeball about this muchAbout a year ago, I translated what the head sunscreen chemist of one of the biggest Korean skincare companies said:TL;DR, Apply in several layers. For reference 500 won coin is quite big. (26.50mm in diameter)+ Everywhere else, the advice I've gotten over and over again is to apply 2 layers.https://preview.redd.it/y90y3z5t8s351.jpg?width=1227&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9b786e51ff77761d7e2483499f61fd746a27d83BESTMy Skin Type: SUPER dry, Somewhat dehydrated, Sensitive, Dark-spot prone! [Dry, hot, Californian desert climate]Alcohol is A-OK for me, it makes the sunscreens tolerable and they do not dry out my skin. High % of zinc oxide dries the crap out of my skin, actually. Rather not have fragrance, but it isn't a deal-breaker if the sunscreen is perfect every other way.Always use vitamin C serum to boost protection against UV rays (my current fav is Timeless). As you can see here, the Melano CC by itself did prevent some UVA damage vs nothing at all.----For Asian sunscreens:- Essence: most moisturizing, easy, casual- Gel: most casual, easy on-and-off- Milks: most tenacious, for outdoors/sports/waterproof (JAPANESE MILKS MUST BE SHAKEN before using! - They come with little metal balls inside for this. Korean milks don't usually have this.)- Water-resistant doesn't mean the product is meant for outdoors/sports/swimming!! Japan is extremely humid and these are meant to stay on while still sweating for casual daily wear during the summer, NOT for exercise/swimming.----Mini-ReviewsBIODERMA PHOTODERM MAX SPRAY SPF 30 - UVA 16 - 400 ml - Alcohol-free - Water-resistantMilky, liquidy. Good, tolerable. Doesn't sting eyes as long as it doesn't run into my eyes. Not super duper greasy. Expires 9 months after opening. 1.5 pump is equivalent to 1/4 tsp. Only used indoors next to windows as UVA protection is not high enough for me.BIODERMA PHOTODERM MAX SPRAY SPF 50 - UVA 33 - 400 ml - Fragrance/Alcohol-free - Water-resistantPrice-wise, it seemed like a good deal but it expires 6 months after opening!! Milky, liquidy. Very greasy. Smell was super strong and nauseating for me at first. NO ONE has mentioned this in any of their reviews tho, so it may just be me with a sensitive nose. But it went away when I got used to it. Now I barely notice it. Makes me super greasy and shiny. Stings my eyes despite no avobenzone and gentle filters.KOSE SUNCUT UV PERFECT GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 100g - Fragrance-free - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSSemi-transparent gel. Light yellow tint.On the face, way too drying. Dries down completely matte. Feels like almost nothing. I use it as my neck sunscreen bc I have sensory issues and can't stand anything on my neck. Use mostly in summer/exercise. Pills at the end of the day when I rub. It pilled like crazy on my face at first but for reason, it doesn't as much anymore.(Pilling seems more like individual thing, as not everyone's skin reacts the same way.) Has not tanned my neck so far. I really want to try the milk version for my face/neck.MISSHA AQUA SUN GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 50ml - Heavy Fragrance - NOT Water-resistantWhite, opaque, lightweight cream. On the face, a bit drying if I don't moisturize well. Dries down completely comfortable, skin-like, comfort-matte*. Feels like nothing*, more so than Kose suncut. Another fav for my neck for more casual, non-sweaty days. Dries down in an instant. Used in the correct amount + vitamin C serum -> PIH did not darken.Contains avobenzone but does NOT sting my sensitive eyes bc it dries down so quickly. Do not use with things that make things penetrate super well, like the Sulwhasoo first care activating serum (my god, the irritation!!!! The swelling!!). It works perfectly fine without that serum though.RHOTO SKIN AQUA UV SUPER MOISTURE MILK SPF PA ++++ - 40ml - Fragrance/Alcohol-Free - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTS (But kinda iffy according to Ratzilla)Velvety, silicone-y, milky, very liquidy. Feels a little heavy/silicone-y going on, once dried down, very comfortable. Moisturizing, wonderful for my dry skin. Cool-weather fav. PIH faded used in conjunction with vitamin C serum.NIVEA UV MILKY GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 80g - Fragrance-Free - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSMilky cream, no-fuss, reliable. Slightly heavier & can definitely feel it on the skin compared to something like Suncut & Missha. However, nowhere near heavy as something like Bioderma. Has no problem with reapplication, middle-of-the-road texture allows it to be used in winter without drying out, also used in the summer without being way too heavy. Doesn't smell heavily of alcohol, it's further down the list than most other Japanese sunscreens. More affordable, got it at $12 a bottle. PIH faded used with vitamin C serum.BIORE AQUA RICH WATERY GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 90ml - Light Citrus Scent - Water-resistant - BUT NOT FOR SPORTSHeavy alcohol scent mixed with citrus. Essence version is slightly shinier. Found it to protect my skin a little better than the essence version for some reason. It's good, tolerable, lightweight. Good budget sunscreen, but I'm too paranoid to rely on it as my PIH and neck DID darken with the essence version.PURITO UNSCENTED CENTELLA SUN SPF 50 PA++++ - 60ml - Fragrance/Alcohol-Free - NOT Water-resistantAVOID IF YOU'RE PRONE TO PIH/MELASMA. Wonderful calming moisturizer for dry skin. However, protective it is not. At least for me. My PIH darkened way more and I got way more sunspots using this for several months. Upsetting!!ALTRUIST SPF 50 - 100ml - UVA 45? - Fragrance/Alcohol-Free - Water-resistantCheap as chips. Possibly the cheapest sunscreen I've come across. Thick, heavy, greasy, but feels more "substantial" than Bioderma and not as greasy. I don't feel like clawing this off my face. Will use for "I don't care how I look like" days/swimming. Sticks to the skin extremely well, tried swimming in it. Hard to remove. I can't use it around my eyes bc of stinging. Has avobenzone but doesn't cause hot, burning sensation like Neutrogena sheer dry touch.KANEBO ALLIE EXTRA UV GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 40g/90g - Fragrance-Free - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSOne of Asia's favs. This pilled like crazy at first, but stopped for reason, just like the Suncut. What was up with that, idk. Maybe wrong skincare products combo? It also pilled on my mother. It tends to pill with makeup. But alone, I feel safe relying on it. Greasier& heavier than UV Perfect - the milk version. Still no white cast 1/4 tsp applied. Still fairly tolerable even at that amount. The white cast was suddenly insane though when used in conjunction with Zeroid Intensive Cream. o.O Not the upgraded 2020 version.Emphasizes small dry patches I might have, but please remember I have tret face and exceptionally dry skin.Has friction-resistant technology. Becomes more resistant to water when wet.KANEBO ALLIE EXTRA UV PERFECT SPF 50 PA++++ - 25ml/60ml - Fragrance-Free - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSHeavier/greasier, not as cosmetically elegant compared to Anessa milk or gel, but still 1000000000x lighter and better-feeling than Bioderma spray SPF 50 or La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light. Still a bit shiny face at the end of the day. Feel safe relying on it for protection. Doesn't sting the eyes, gentle on skin. Prefer this much more to the gel version. Allie has a good reputation for preventing dark spots/tans. Not the upgraded 2020 version.Has a teensy bit of a "beautifying" effect on my skin? Idk, my skin texture and pores look smoother/skin looks a little bit more "prettier" when I use this.Emphasizes small dry patches I might have, but please remember I have tret face and exceptionally dry skin. Has friction-resistant technology.SHISEIDO ANESSA PERFECT UV SKINCARE MILK SPF 50 PA++++ - 20ml/60ml - Mild scent aside from the strong alcohol scent - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSHG. Yes, I don't know the exact PPD, but it is famous for preventing dark spots/tans, but is much more popular than Allie, probably because of the texture and lack of white cast. EXCELLENT primer to makeup. My skin feels not too dry, not too greasy, it's just the perfect, satiny balance. However, expensive. Got it for $26 for the 60 ml/2 oz on Stylevana. Same texture and everything as the big two packet samples I got from Japan.Makes better primer/makeup doesn't break up as fast as when using Allie milk. Doesn't really emphasize my dry patches. Not the upgraded 2020 version. The newer version has like 8 filters and seems crazy protective. Has friction-resistant technology and becomes more resistant when exposed to heat.SHISEIDO ANESSA PERFECT UV SKINCARE GEL SPF 50 PA++++ - 90g - Fragranced - Water-resistant - FOR SPORTSQuite different from the milk. Feels lighter, more matte, a little bit drying on the face if you have very dry skin. Very sensitive skin may need to be careful. At 90g, it's cheaper than the milk, but I feel like oily skin will possibly appreciate the gel more and combo/dry skins the milk more. Not the upgraded 2020 version.---------------------------HOPE THAT HELPS FELLOW SKIN CARE ADDICTS! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ(I really want to try P20 SPF 50+ sunscreen next...)
