Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am now 32 and discovered the joy of adult acne in my late 20s. I went from having perfect porcelain skin to having stress and hormone induced acne and super sensitive skin.I finally had enough of the DIY skin routines that didn't work and made an appointment with a Dermatologist. I prepared, I brought a notebook for notes, I took pictures of the products I was using, etc. They had asked me if I wanted to do a telehealth appt because of COVID, but I thought "How are you going to get to know my skin through the phone?" and scheduled an in person visit instead.Maybe it was me, maybe it was the doctor, maybe it's just the culture of their office. I kid you not - I walked in the door, took an elevator, checked in, had my appointment, and was back in my car in under 20 minutes. The medical assistant talked to me more than anyone else. She took a short history and a pic of my face (mask on). The Dr came in, asked me maybe 3 questions, looked at my face maskless for all of 3 seconds, and prescribed Differin (otc), spironolactone, and clindamycin. The MA gave me a sheet of paper with directions, and I was out the door to schedule my follow up in FOUR MONTHS.I was so caught off guard that I didn't have a chance to even have a conversation with the doctor. I didn't get to show her my normal skincare lineup, I didn't get to ask any questions about the meds, nothing. No real history, no cautions on what to expect or side effects other than to drink lots of water on the spiro. I felt duped after paying a $40 copay for a 5 minute visit with the doc. She did say "any questions?" As she was halfway out the door, but is that really an invitation for questions? I felt like not so much. Now - the regimen has helped. It's been about 5-6 weeks and I'm starting to see a difference. The Differin has entered the purge stage (I think? Based on what I've read throughout this sub), and my face is super dry/peely/sensitive and around my eyes and lips are almost raw. I wish I had been warned of that happening and what is best to use to ease the discomfort! Thankfully, I haven't noticed any adverse effects from the spiro, since they told me I could get dizzy and pee a lot.I guess I'm just disappointed in myself for not advocating for myself more. And disappointed in the doctor for giving me only 5 minutes of her time and no follow up for 4 months. I left thinking "this better be a f*&king miracle cure after that appointment if I'm not supposed to come back for 4 months."So - don't be like me. Ask your questions, sit in that chair until you get them all answered. Demand the full attention of your MA and doc during the appointment you are paying for. If you don't jive with the doc, find a new one. Find out what all your medications are for, find out ALL the side effects and how to counteract them. Get recommendations on products. Don't depend on this sub to answer all your questions after the fact, because that's where I'm at now. That said, this sub has been super helpful, and if any of you have advice for me on a good moisturizer/balm to heal my dry/painful skin, have at it in the comments, I'm here for it! In the meantime, I'll keep on with my new regimen while looking for a different Derm office that takes my insurance.
