[Review] 25 Facial Sunscreen Reviews: Biossance, Supergoop!, Shiseido, FAB, and more

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone,Like many of you, I am an avid sunscreen user. Over the summer I set out to test a variety of sunscreens to find my HGs. Below are 25 sunscreen reviews, I took pictures of 23 of them.I have pale skin, use tretinoin, and live in the Mojave Desert, so finding an effective sunscreen is crucial. I have sensitive skin and am eco-conscious so environmentally-friendly filters are important to me. For each sunscreen, I used it for about a week unless it was truly horrendous. I hope you find my reviews useful!Imgur Album of Sunscreen PhotosBest Overall: Shiseido Urban EnvironmentBest Outdoor: Badger Mineral Stick (runner-up Thinksport Kids SPF50+)Best Everyday: BiossanceMost Cosmetically Elegant: Elta MD Physical (tinted) and Biossance (untinted)Best for Redness: Dr Jart+ Color Correcting CreamWorst Overall: NeutrogenaWorst Outdoor: NeutrogenaWorst Daily: Ren CleanLeast Cosmetically Elegant: Ren Clean and Thinksport KidsWorst for Redness: First Aid BeautyPurito Centella Unscented SPF50, PA++++Rating: 1/5 daily wearUV Filters: Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate 3.0%, Ethylhexyl Triazone 2.0%Price: $13 for 2oz/59mLReef-friendly? Prior to the evidence, this was a soft, creamy sunscreen that applied like a primer.Neutrogena Zinc Dry Touch SPF 50Rating: 1/5 for outdoor sunscreenUV Filters: Zinc Oxide 21.6%Price: $11 for 3 oz/88 mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No!EWG Rating: 5Review: Physical sunscreen. goes on nicely, very white but dries down to a lesser white cast. Greasy at first, sticky once it sets. Does not hold up against sweating, ended up getting into my eyes and burning which was very upsetting. Standard plastic tube packaging with flip top lid.Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector, Broad Spectrum SPF42Rating: 5/5 for both daily and outdoor.UV Filters: octinoxate 4.9%, Octocrylene 3%, Zinc Oxide 12.5%Price: $35 for 1 oz/30 mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No. Too expensive for what you get, even though the formula is very nice.EWG Rating: 5Review: water resistant for 40 minutes. Runny as it comes out of bottle, but spreads nicely and dries down quickly to a matte finish. Light white cast that disappeared once it set. Not greasy at all, due to the combo this could double for daily use and outdoor activities. Once settled, my skin did feel semi-dry. I wore this both to work and for a day of strenuous hiking, it held up well to both! This would be my universal HG if I was ok with shelling out $35 for an ounce. Yes.Repurchase? Yes, my favorite.EWG Rating: BESTReview: Feels like a moisturizer as it goes on. At first it’s a bit sticky, but it dries down to a light dewy consistency. No white cast which was surprising as it’s a mineral sunscreen. It also makes for a fantastic primer, definitely my new daily HG! Packaging is a plastic tube with flip top lid.Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish SPF50+, PA+++Rating: 5/5 for daily wearUV Filters: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide - some sites say Nano, others do not specifyPrice: $11 for 1.85oz/55mLRepurchase? No.EWG Rating: N/AReview: goes on smoothly and almost immediately dries down to a satin finish. Really impressed with how softly this sits on the face. No obvious white cast, at most my face seems just a tad lighter. There is a fragrance, it smells old-lady-ish but I’m not too bothered. It looks nice enough that I’m opting to not apply my tinted moisturizer and go to work bare-faced. While websites vary as to whether this is nano or non-nano, it doesn’t appear that there’s enough research to determine if nano zinc or nano titanium can damage your skin from sun exposure or be absorbed into your bloodstream. Packaging is a plastic bottle with flip top lid.La Roche Posay Anthelios 60Rating: 2/5UV Filters: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10.72%, Octisalate 3.21%, Octocrylene 6%, Oxybenzone 3.86%Price: $30 for 1.7oz/50mLReef-friendly? No.Repurchase? No, I try to stick to mineral or mostly-mineral sunscreensEWG Rating: 7Review: this one is a runny coming out, but applies well to the face. It does have that “sunscreen smell” but it’s not strong and dissipates shortly after it sets. It dries down nicely to a soft glow. Definitely one of my favorites as far as being cosmetically elegant. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with twist off lid.Ren Clean Screen Mineral SPF30Rating: 2/5 for daily/outdoorUV Filters: Zinc Oxide 22%Price: $38 for 1.7 oz/50mL*Repurchase?** No.Reef-friendly? Yes.EWG Rating: 3Review: goes on thick, leaves noticeable white cast. Doesn’t feel too oily once it sets but the cast didn’t go away. I ended up putting tinted moisturizer on top to blend better with my skin. I felt like I was wearing cakey foundation all day, which I didn’t like. Overall, decent sunscreen but not a daily wear one. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Coola Mineral Sun Silk Creme Sunscreen SPF30Rating: 3/5 for daily wearUV Filters: Zinc Oxide 15%Price: $42 for 1.5oz/44mLRepurchase? No.Reef-friendly? Yes.EWG Rating: 5Review: goes on smooth with a slight white cast that disappears as it sets. Dries down matte, with a very slight tackiness that settles into a silky feel. Depending on the moisturizer applied before it, it can pill or dry down gunky. I used this for two months, and couldn’t get over the gunky application. Packaging is a glass bottle with plastic pump.Suntique I’m Pure Cica Suncream SPF50, PA++++Rating: 5/5 dailyUV Filters: Zinc oxide, titanium dioxidePrice: $24 for 1.69oz/50mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Yes.EWG Rating: N/AReview: This is by far one of the most cosmetically elegant physical sunscreens I’ve ever put on. I would even say it’s a dupe for Biossance. It applies like a thick moisturizer, it feels very nice and creamy. No white cast and is a bit tacky as it sets. Only drawback is I cannot find the concentrations of the UV filters. It reminds me of Purito Centella Unscented, so I’m hesitant to rebuy or recommend. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.First Aid Beauty Weightless Mineral Sunscreen SPF30Rating: 3/5 for dailyUV Filters: zinc oxide 16%Price: $34 for 1.5oz/44mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No.EWG Rating: 2Review: Initial texture is like that of a moisturizer while the color straight out of the bottle looks like a medium shade of foundation. Going on the tint is minimal, but progressively darkens as it dries. It quickly sets to a very soft, satin finish but far too dark for me. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Dr. Jart+ Tigergrass Color Correcting Treatment SPF30Rating: 4/5UV Filters: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc OxidePrice: $52 for 1.7oz/50mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Not at this price point.EWG Rating: 3Review: goes on like a thick creamy lotion and spreads well. It definitely balances out the redness of my face which is impressive, it dries down into a slightly tacky feel. For slight redness, I mix it with my tinted moisturizer. Packaging is a plastic tub with twist off lid.Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion 50+Rating: 4/5UV Filters: Avobenzone 2.3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 5%Price: $25 for 2oz/50mL or $49 for 5oz/150mLReef-friendly? No.Repurchase? No.EWG Rating: 5Review: goes on like a moisturizer with a slight fragrance. It sets down to a soft, silky feel - really surprising for a chemical sunscreen. Overall, it’s really nice but I try to stick to mineral so won’t be purchasing. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with twist off lid.Thinksport Kids Safe Sunscreen SPF50+Rating: 5/5 outdoor sunscreenUV Filters: Zinc Oxide 20%Price: $7 for 3oz/89mL, it varies.Reef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Yes.EWG Rating: 2Review: goes on thick, and leaves a light white cast as it sets along with a light tackiness. I accidentally put twice as much as I needed at first, so beware when squeezing it out. Withstood my sweat and the elements on a 7-mile hike, I even got sweat in my eyes and there was no burn. It sticks to the face well, this will be my go-to hiking face sunscreen. Like many sunscreens, it does attract dirt and any grime in the air so will require a double cleanse. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.All Good Mineral Sunscreen Butter, SPF50+Rating: 2/5UV Filters: Zinc Oxide 25%Price: $11 for 1oz/28gReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No.EWG Rating: N/AReview: holy mother of white cast! This stuff is more like a balm, it’s applies thick and isn’t easily spreadable. Absolutely waterproof/sweat proof and didn’t come off when I’d rub sweat off my face, it also didn’t sting when I got it in my eyes. This is a GREAT outdoor sunscreen, I’ve used it while hiking 14 miles in the SoCal summer sun. I’ll definitely reuse as it’s made of six ingredients. However the white cast is insane - Halloween-makeup insane. The photos linked are four hours after a second application and I’d sweat quite a bit - and the photos still don’t do it justice. Packaging is a metal tin with twist off lid.Bare Republic Mineral SPF50 Sport Sunscreen StickRating: 3/5UV Filters: Zinc Oxide 20%Price: $10 for .5oz/14.2gReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No.EWG Rating: 5Review: went on with a white cast, I applied it thickly so it’s noticeable. Stood up to my sweating in the sunlight while hiking. I like this one, it’s equivalent to the all good sunscreen butter. Packaging is plastic, like a standard deodorant package with twist-up applicator.Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sport SPF30+Rating: 5/5Sunscreen: Octocrylene 4%, Zinc Oxide 9.7%Price: $19 for 5oz/148mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Yes.EWG Rating: 3Review: this is NOT the face-specific sunscreen, but I love it on my body so thought I’d give it a try. This is definitely a winner for outdoor sunscreens. This stuff applies nicely, easily spreadable, and dries down with no white cast. In the hours I’ve hiked in it, I’ve never experienced a burn. This is a winner if you don’t want to buy separate face/body sunscreens. Packaging is a plastic bottle with flip top lid.Elta MD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41 Sunscreen - TintedRating: 5/5UV Filters: Zinc Oxide 9.0%, Titanium Dioxide 7.0%Price: $33 for 3oz./88.7mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Yes - when I run out of tinted moisturizer.EWG Rating: 3Review: the hype is REAL. This stuff went on so smoothly, as if I was applying moisturizer. It’s soft and lightly dewy, and sets quickly into a soft matte. Once dry it’s as if I’m not wearing any sunscreen. The light tint is subtle and not noticeable, overall this is cosmetically elegant and I feel protected by the concentration of UV filters. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Nia 24 Sun Damage Prevention Broad Spectrum SPF 30Rating: 2/5UV Filters: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 2.6%Price: $39.20 for 2.56oz/75 mLReef-friendly? YesRepurchase? No.EWG Rating: 3Review: this went on nice, but had a greasy feel and look. It did dry down to a nice, soft feel but still managed to have the greasy shine. It’s meh. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Kiss My Face Kids Defense Mineral SPF30 Sunscreen LotionRating: 1/5 outdoor wearUV Filters: Titanium Dioxide 6%, Zinc Oxide 6%Price: $15 for 4oz/118mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? No.EWG Rating: 3Review: While it initially went on nicely with a not-too-bad white cast, it didn’t set well and showed signs of pilling early on. I hiked 3.5 miles before reapplying. My sweat had smeared a decent amount of the first application, and upon second application it pilled quite poorly (see last photo). On the bright side, it didn’t run or get into my eyes. Won’t be repurchasing due to extensive pilling. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Pacifica Sun + Skincare Mineral Face Shade Coconut Probiotic SPF 30Rating: 2/5UV Filter: Titanium Dioxide 4.8%, Zinc Oxide 3.1%Price: $15 for 1.7oz/50mLReef-friendly? YesRepurchase? No.Review: This had a hefty white cast, one that did not disappear after drying down or hours of wear. I won’t repurchase as there are other sunscreens equally strong but for cheaper (and for equal to lesser white cast).Note: it appears they have two formulas for this. One with titanium dioxide and zinc, and one with just a high concentration of zinc. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 (no image)Rating: 1/5 daily wearUV Filters: Homosalate (12%), Octinoxate (7.5%), Octocrylene (2%), Zinc Oxide (3.5%)Price: $13.50 for 3oz/89mLReef-friendly? No.Repurchase? No.Review: it’s slightly greasy and requires something like Squalane underneath to be applied in small sections to ensure it doesn’t pill. This broke me out quite badly. Ended up giving it away at about 3/4 full. No pictures as I tried this long before I was building this review, and I have no intent on making myself break out. Packaging is a plastic bottle with pump.Supergoop! Sunny Screen SPF 50 Lotion for Babies + KidsRating: 4/5UV Filter: Titanium Dioxide 3.4%, Zinc Oxide 23.8%Price: $26 for 3oz/89mLReef-friendly: Yes.Repurchase MaybeReview: this is thicker than most sunscreens, it’s somewhere between a cream and a balm. It takes a bit longer to work it in evenly, but once it’s on there’s an initial white cast that settles down to a gooey look (borderline greasy, so not for those with oily skin). It feels tacky, but overall it’s not too bad. It feels like I’ve applied an occlusive moisturizer and not a crusty or greasy sunscreen. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip lid.Badger Unscented Broad Spectrum SPF35 Natural Mineral Sunscreen All Season Face StickRating: 5/5UV Filter: Non-Nano Zinc Oxide 22.5%Price: $9.99 for 0.65oz/18.4gReef-friendly: Yes.Repurchase? Yes.Review: White cast at first, but quickly goes away once you rub it in. I was really impressed with this formula, typically these are grossly thick with a heavy white cast but this was really nice and balm-like, and it was not greasy. I ran 4 miles (and sweat a lot) after applying and it stayed still, didn’t pill, and no white cast formed. Definitely my favorite stick sunscreen, and with six total ingredients, worth repurchasing. Packaging is a plastic tube with twist-up applicator (like lip balm).Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40Rating: 4.5/5UV Filter: Avobenzone, 3%, Homosalate 8%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 4%Price: $44 for 2.5oz/73.9mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase? Yes.Review: This Comes out as a yellow-clear gel. It spreads very nicely and has the silky texture of makeup primer. It has a very subtle sunscreen smell, which doesn’t bother me. Overall this is very nice, it sets like a moisturizer leaving a slight glossy/dewy look. This is one of the more cosmetically-elegant screens, and it could very well be worn by itself or with makeup. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50 with Sunflower ExtractRating: 2/5UV Filter: Avobenzone (3%), Homosalate (10%), Octisalate (5%), Octocrylene (7.5%)Price: $32 for 5.5oz/162mLReef-friendly? Yes.Repurchase?No.Review: This was a ball of grease, the greasiest sunscreen I’ve reviewed. While it did settle into being slightly less greasy and more tacky, it’s nothing to write home about. Won’t be repurchasing. Packaging is a plastic tube bottle with flip top lid.
