[Review] The Ordinary Niacinamide + Zinc vs Inkey List Niacinamide

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve seen quite a bit of interest in these two products, but not a formal review! So I thought I’d do one here for you all :) I have been trying both for a few months, the TO one at night and the Inkey list one in the morning. These are my takeaways, so hopefully you can choose the product that is right for you!Disclaimer: I am not a dermatologist or cosmetologist, so please do not take my reviews as medical advice or as necessarily true for you and your skin. They reflect only my own experiences, and feedback I have seen in reviews/this subreddit. Please patch test, and check for any products that you are allergic to or may conflict with your other actives.Pictures of the products:1st pic- my two well-loved bottles of both products2nd pic - a drop of both on my hand, TO niacinamide on top and Inkey List niacinamide below. My skin type: combination, with acne-prone t-zone and somewhat dry cheeks. Generally closed comedones and whiteheads. I am not sensitive or allergic to any cosmetics that I know of (knock wood!).The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%Price/oz: $5.90/oz CADFirst 5 ingredients: Aqua (Water), Niacinamide, Pentylene Glycol, Zinc PCA, Dimethyl IsosorbidepH: 5-6.5Texture: light serum, that can foam when rubbed in and leaves a sticky residueReview: this product is my holy grail. I did some research on this thread that said using directly on the skin led to a sticky residue, pilling, and irritation due to the high concentration. So, I mix two drops in with 4 pumps of moisturizer every night, and it goes on fine with no residue. This almost instantly cleared up my acne, and made my t-zone less oily. I haven’t had clear skin in years, and I was sending pictures to all my friends in shock! This would definitely be more appropriate for oily or combination skin, as it is lightly drying (but not irritating). It might not be as effective as a BHA or AHA, but it is very gentle and gives results. The drawbacks of this product are: I’ve heard Zinc PCA can cause reactions for folks with sensitive skin, and I wish the formula was nicer to put directly on skin.Takeaways: holy grail status for me, but not the most elegant product, and requires some research to use effectively. May not be appropriate for dry skin.Inkey List NiacinamidePrice/oz: $8.99/oz CADFirst 5 ingredients: Water (Aqua/ Eau), Niacinamide, Glycerin, Propanediol, Butylene Glycol (with notable additions of squalane and hyaluronic acid further down the list)pH: 6.09Texture: heavier serum that leaves a smooth, moisturized finish with no stickinessReview: compared to the TO niacinamide, this is a much more cosmetically elegant formula. The squalane and hyaluronic acid play well with the niacinamide to give a very hydrating and soothing effect. I apply this product on damp skin and then put moisturizer over top, so the hyaluronic acid has water to pull into the skin. It leaves my skin soft and bright, and is a nice addition to my morning routine. That said, I didn’t see any dramatic difference in comparison to the TO formula, which could be because this formula doesn’t contain Zinc PCA which does the heavy lifting in terms of acne control. The packaging is also very basic, and the cap tends to get messy. This would be an excellent choice for you if you want hydration and brightness all in one step, or if you have dry skin, but frankly I think splitting up the actives and using them separately might give more dramatic results. I just purchased The Ordinary Hemi-Squalane Oil to replace this product when it runs out, and a hyaluronic acid serum would also get the job done.Takeaways: a cosmetically elegant serum, with more hydration and less potential for irritation. But, not as dramatic results and could be replaced with separate products.Overall: I will continue to use TO niacinamide and replace the Inkey list one with other products. But, this is also based on my skin type, and those with dry skin who want niacinamide might choose the opposite. Please feel free to ask any questions below, and I hope this was helpful!
