Why do people prefer CeraVe cream over CeraVe lotion?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
The lotion is lighter and easier to apply and seems to have the same main ingredients. Why does everyone prefer the cream, especially if the majority of people using it are acne prone? Wouldn't something lighter be more beneficial?

[Acne] My journey

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Basically just want to give you guys a heads up of my journey, maybe you can glean some advice from it.So all my life id never had any acne, never developed even a spot/pimple anywhere, it made me confident, more than that, I was arrogant. I thought I was the shit, every girl wanted me, every guy wanted to be me. They didn't, I was a jerk and thats that. Fast forward to the fine old age of 18, I am just off to university and I start to develop a few spots, I think nothing of it, I am sure they will go, but with time they get worse. I was horrified with my appearance and lost all confidence in myself. I couldn't look people in the eyes and I would be lying if I said I didn't get upset at times. I developed habits that I am sure a lot of people with acne will have, I stopped looking in mirrors, became frantically obsessed with hygiene, diet, anything that could rid me of my problem. Nothing worked, so I went to the doctor, he prescribed BP and I used it, to no avail, if anything it made my skin worse, my skin became extremely dry and cracked at times even with moisturiser. I remember looking in the mirror one day without my glasses on and thinking my skin looked good, just to put my glasses on and almost break down there and then. Then a friend said something to me, not aimed at me but it hit home, he said 'I'll give you a metaphor, if you look at yourself really close in the mirror for a long time, you will see every wrinkle, every blemish, every flaw in crisp detail. But why are you looking so close? You should take a step back and look at yourself as a whole person, that is what other people do'. This changed my life.Going into my second year I had stopped trying so hard to get clear skin, I maintained a standard such as washing my face twice a day, using a light moisturiser and changing my pillowcase but I stopped lathering product after product on my skin, stopped avoiding every single type of food that could possibly cause acne and just enjoyed my life. I became more confident, people noticed, people complimented, I got myself a girlfriend. In just one year my life changed so much, I still have minor/moderate acne, but I don't let it define me.I guess what I want to say is that I know its hard to dwell on every single pimple on your face but other people don't and you shouldn't. Stop letting your acne tell you how to live your life.

In most sunscreen reviews we almost always talk about the cosmetic elegance but leave out one thing - How well it really protects you from the sun. So how well did your sunscreen brand protect you from the sun?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Whenever I read reviews about the sunscreen it's almost always about the cosmetic elegance, how well it works under make up, whitecast, breakout etc. However the reviews almost always leave out or make a minor reference to the crucial point of sunscreen - did it protect you well? Did you burn? Did your skin redden after use? Etc.Inspired by this post about Honest's Sunscreen customers complaining about how it doesn't protect them well. I looked back at most of the sunscreen reviews on this sub and realized that we don't really mention how effective the sunscreen we wear are. Honest's Sunscreen is labeled as SPF 30 but people still burned. The sunscreens we review no matter what it's label may or may not be as protective as we think it is.So I would like to start a thread about the sunscreens you use and how well it protects you under the sun.

Paula's Choice vs Cosrx BHA Experiences

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Im looking to start using a new BHA and have narrowed it down to the Cosrx Blackhead Power or PC Bha Liquid. PC products seem to be more popular here but I like the appeal of the Cosrx being cheaper. So to people who have tried one or both, I'd love to hear your experience with the products. My skin problems revolve around lots of blackheads around my nose and acne on my forehead and cheeks. So far I use Coconut oil as a moisturizer and the Cerva foaming cleanser. I tried using red Stridex but it caused me to breakout in cystic acne all over. I'd just want to get the acne under control!

Skincare Addictioners! What in the world do you do if everything breaks out you and you can't narrow down the ingredients, or there's too many that could possibly break you out?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm about to give up on all skincare products and even stop using my retinoids. I don't even use a sunscreen!!! Because everything breaks me out!!! Even vaseline started giving me a few tiny red dots after a week, although it didn't break me out. I'm doing something very wrong, and it must be something very basic, because not everything should be giving me a pimple like that! And before someone asks me what my routine is... my routine is nothing right now, because I'm trying to save my face. Except for prescription tretinoin. I've been struggling for two years like this! I've been using this retinoid for two years, with maybe only 4 months of solid sunscreen use. But I just can't do this anymore. I've probably damaged my face so much underneath because sunscreens make me break out so I don't use them, and I don't even know what cleanser will work for me anymore.. and oil cleansing never stopped sunscreens from breaking me out.I'm about to cuss up a storm I'm so fucking frustrated!!!!

[Acne] What kind of pimples/clogs are these?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Ever since I started breaking out 2 years ago until now (I hardly have a legitimate pimple these days. Yay!) I would get this weird pimples on certain parts of my face. Usually my cheekbone to temple area on my left side and the apple of my right cheek. I would best describe them as white spots. They do not come to a head nor are they red or inflammed. They are sometimes every so slightly raised. I have to look closely to see one. Prior to landing on my current, very effective routine, I would get atleast one a month. I think my current routine as really minimized them because I rarely find one. Here's the thing, since they don't come to a head they can't be lanced. If I wanted to get one out I have to basically "open" it by using an extractor to try to pop it. Somtimes I do get some white gunk out, sometimes not. Either way, I can tell it's opened because I can see a small red hole. Then I apply HCB's and MAN, does a lot of stuff come out. I'm talking up to several nights of HCB's until it's drained. If I was able to push out puss the first time, I often end up pushing out more a day or two later. It's like these spots have no major outwardly signs, but they must be quite deep. Once one goes away another doesn't come back in the same spot. Like I said, ever since landing on my current routine they have really, really decreased. I'm not sure which product they responded to.My routine:AM: * wash with Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser (btw I cannot say enough good things about this. It even removes make up!) * apply Neutrogena 2% salicylic acid toner * apply Olay 7-in-1 Total Effects moisturizerPM: * cleanse with same Cetaphil cleanser * apply Alpha Hydrox 10% AHA lotion * apply Aczone * moisturize with Cetaphil moisturizing creamThis has been my routine since the winter, with just the AHA being added in June.So I guess my two questions are: What are these these? Which of my products helped get rid of them and is there anything else I can use to 100% eliminate them? I'd say there's an 80-90% decrease in them.

Every treatment I've tried has left my skin with a terrible reaction.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
As the title says, I have dry, extremely sensitive skin. Thus far I have triedPaulas Choice Hydralight Advanced Kit CeraVe Morning and Night Moisturizing LotionsBoth have left me with much more acne than before I got on them. The ceraVe I immediately had an allergic reaction to and it left my skin with rashes that lasted weeks. I tried the Paulas Choice kit for a long enough period(over a month) to realize it wasn't just the initial purging but it was actually negatively affecting my skin.Basically what I am wondering is what treatments I could possibly look into that would be extremely sensitive to my skin as I feel many of these routines are harsh for my face.

TIL Xanthan Gum often isn't vegan. Animal lysozymes are used to clarify it during production.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
This came to my attention when I was in contact with a supplier who offered "vegan" xanthan gum.I thought, well...xanthan gum is produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars, so shouldn't it be vegan anyways? Turns out the most common clarification enzyme is obtained from chicken eggs.Patent describing enzyme clarification: http://www.google.com/patents/US5994107Communication with supplier:A while ago we were intensively searching for a vegan xanthan gum for our portfolio. During that search we found that practically all clear xanthan gums on the market are actually not vegan! The reason is that during the production process an enzyme sourced from chicken egg is used for the clarification step necessary to produce transparent clear xanthan gels.To meet the market demand for vegan xanthan gum we added a vegan version to our portfolio. It’s basically the same product with the difference that the clarification step is simply left away. Since the chicken egg enzyme is taken out of the production process this xanthan gum is vegan. The drawback is that due to this the gels formed by this product are not clear. There are lysozymes that can be extracted from other bacteria (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4221828/). The higher cost, lack of demand, and awareness is probably why we're not seeing it used more often.

[Product question] Quick advice: I splashed some peel on my lip, it still hurts, am I in trouble?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just used a 15% salicylic acid/15% mandelic acid peel. It's my first ever peel and I was cautious with it and closely followed the directions. However, I splashed some peel on my lip.I neutralised it as quickly as I could, then finished the peel, then cleansed etc. I've now also applied my moisturisers and I'm not experiencing any discomfort or redness really, except for where the peel touched my lip.It still hurts and also feels kind of numb - like a burn, because duh.I put Burt's Bees on and Vaseline over that but I'm just worried. Is my lip going to crust over and peel? Am I going to have Kylie Jenner Challenge™ lips tomorrow? Should I take some other protective/aftercare step? Thanks if anyone has any pointers!

[Acne] Does going vegetarian affect your skin? Recently changed diet and have been breaking out.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a 30/F. I began a vegetarian diet about 3.5 weeks ago for a variety of reasons (environmental mainly). I more or less gave myself this challenge for 30 days, but have enjoyed not eating meat at every meal. After this challenge, I will reintroduce meat into my diet, but will not eat as much. Also, during this time period I have been eating some seafood (shrimp or scallops) but not a huge amount.I have been eating more grains than normal, but not more dairy. About 80% of what I eat is clean and homemade. I am a weekend drinker, but those habits have not changed. I have also been replacing protein and iron in my diet with plant-based foods and nuts and seeds.Through my life, I have had some issues with acne but have definitely for it under control in the last few years. Every now and then I will have small breakouts but nothing to what I've had recently. Most of my issues are on my chin, close to nose nostrils, and cheeks. They are very similar to cyst acne. I don't want to exactly say that's what it is, but looking up that's the closets thing I can find. In addition, I have a lot of small bumps on my forehead but they are not red or anything. Just annoying. My routine-MorningMurad Clarifying CleanserGarnier Clean Balancing Daily ExfoliatorMurrad Oil-Control MattifierSmashbox PrimerEveningMurad Clarifying CleanserMurad Clarifying TonerIn short, I'm wondering if my new diet change is causing this and any thing to what I can do. [Product Question] Can Azelaic acid be dangerous in direct sunlight?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello, /r/SkincareAddiction, you are a cool sub, thank you for existing. Now it's my turn to ask you a question and share my concern with you.A dermatologist prescribed me Skinoren (Azelaic acid) half an year ago, and I had been using it until the end of April. It is meant to lower the amount of hematoms I have from my picking back (and... sadly, now) in the years. It really did - I used it twice a day, and it helped a lot with shrinking the purple coloring a bit but I've stopped it because I was worried that the direct and strong sunlight might damage my skin because of azelaic acid.Could this happen in your opinion? Is it safe to use it in direct sunlight? The hematomes have started appearing again and they definitely don't look like flowers, so I was wondering what to use to remove them?

I've had red, dry flaky skin around my nose for 6-8 years now. What can I do to help reduce or eliminate it?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Like I said in the title I've had red, dry skin around my nose for a long time now. It can sometimes be a little itchy, and at times like right now, it can be a little tender/irritated.Right now I have been using A&D ointment for the past couple years, mainly because that was all I had in the house at the time and I just kept using it. The few lotions and creams I used so far produces the same results. During the day, the flakiness isn't as bad, it's mostly in the morning and at night. I do have red skin around my nose, that is almost always visible.I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion on what I should use to help finally get rid or help my dry skin.

I also use aczone in the morning. 2 months ago I went to the deen, disappointed with my results; my skin was mostly clear but there was always at least one deep painful pimple on my face. He put me on 2 months of minocyclin and within a couple days my skin was flawless. I've had maybe 2 pimples since then that last 2 or 3 days and were never bad. Now I just stopped the minocyclin a couple days ago and I'm making sure to stay diligent with my routine. Is there anyway I can take extra measures to avoid breaking out without the antibiotics?

[Routine Help] Will I still see the same effects from a Vitamin C Serum if I only use it every other day, as opposed to every day? Also, is my rotation of exfoliants appropriate?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I used OST C20 in the past, and applied it every night with great results but I've switched to the Active Formulas (or Skin Actives in the US) L-AA based serum that has quite a low ph (1.5). I've also added AHA to my routine very recently, and I've been using BHA for a while. When I used Vit C daily before it was amazing at helping to even my skintone but I don't want to end up putting my skin through more than it can handle. I feel like a safe rotation of exfoliants would be to use Vitamin C every other day, BHA on days that I don't use Vitamin C and then keep my AHA at around 2-3 times weekly use.I just wanted some outside input as to whether this seems like an appropriate approach to using exfoliating products.

I'm a newbie here, looking to change my routine - what do you think of this?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone,I'm a newbie here and have been doing a lot of research through this sub as I've been frustrated with my skincare routine for awhile. I'm looking to make quite a few changes to my routine based on what I've learned from you all (introducing one item at a time although probably purchasing them all at the same time) and was hoping (if it's okay and not against the rules) that you could review my plan and let me know if I'm on the right track before I go ahead and invest in the wrong products. Here are some stats that might help before I begin: 29/F with combination skin. I get the odd pimple on occasion but generally don't suffer with acne. My big concerns are deep lines forming on my forehead (which I really want to minimize as much as possible) and some redness/scaring around and under my nose. I also have some black-heads around my nose and large pores on my cheeks which I'd like to minimize. I don't have much by the way of crows feet yet, but I would prefer to find products that help with under-eye wrinkles before they occur if possible.I'm currently applying Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect Day cream in the morning, followed by a 30+ sunscreen. In the evening I use the Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect Intense Serum and the Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect night cream. I'm currently between cleaners because I haven't found something I really like. I'm using a waterproof eye-makeup remover I bought in Poland but this isn't a long-term solution and am interested in trying oils.Anyways, to the routine, from my research here, it seems the best things for me to do would be to:Try Retin-A cream to try and reduce the wrinkles and improve the tone of my skin (not using it around my eyes, nose or lips though). I don't think I can get it easily in Europe, but do have friends visiting from Canada and noted that you can get it (at least on Amazon) over there. I was looking at ordering this Does this look right? As well as using it on my face, I'm curious about whether I can also apply it to my chest to minimize the wrinkles and small lines that have been forming between my breasts and on my chest (due to years of sleeping on my side which I'm now trying to change)? For cleansing my skin in the morning, I've seen that a lot of people rave about CeraVe, so I'd use their facial cleanserThen for moisturizing creams, I would look to change my night cream to thisAnd my day cream to thisI'd also like a more natural product to help me remove makeup and have heard a lot about the benefits of using oils. I've seen a few different recommendations, some people have advised to try baby oil and others have recommended Dickinson's Witch Hazel What do you recommend for something that will remove my makeup (including waterproof eye makeup) effectively without clogging my pores? Also, would I also look to use the face wash after using the oil or do I just let the remaining oil on my face soak in?I've heard a lot about the importance of using a good vitamin C serum and would look to put it on as my first product after cleansing my face in the morning. I've heard good things about Paula's Choice and Timeless but did see that Amazon has a special offer for this product this week. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it look suitable? I understand the product is only good for three months after opening so wonder if this is a better-priced alternative that will achieve the same results or if I should pay the extra money for something like the Timeless Vitamin C? I would also be looking to use the Vitamin C cream on my chest, along with applying oil on before bed (I currently alternate between using argan oil, avocado oil or coconut oil). So, what do you think of this? Does it seem a good strategy? Is there anything I should change or bare in mind?Thank you all in advance for your time and feedback!Edit: to fix formatting

[X-Post from r/Accutane] My Experience on Accutane (with before and after pictures)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just want to start this off by saying that cohesive writing isn't my forte (neither is English), so I hope you'll understand what I write.I started Accutane on January 29th, 2015 and ended on June 27th, 2015.Background:I'm a 20 year-old male, about 70 kgs, and 180cm tall.My acne became very persistent and annoying when I turned 18. My problem areas were always my cheeks. I'd get the occasional pimple on my T-zone, but it was never too bad.March-May 2014:The acne.org regimen. The benzoyl peroxide gel worked wonders. My acne was beginning to subside significantly and I was loving the results.May 12th, 2014:I went to bed the night before with my usual routine (cleanse, BP gel, moisturize) and woke up the day after with my face looking like a goddamn tomato. It was incredibly red and really, really itchy. I immediately booked an appointment with a dermatologist (first time going to a dermatologist, by the way) and he put me on an anti-inflammatory gel and a round of antibiotics because, apparently, it was an infection of some sorts. The redness cleared up within a week and my face was looking really good, but I couldn't use the BP gel anymore.September, 2014:My acne began coming back and it was pretty harsh. Worst than it had ever been.October 14th, 2014:Finally got an appointment with a pretty good dermatologist around my area. He put me on Retin-A for 2 months. The Retin-A wasn't helping at all. I feel like it just sat on my face, not doing anything.December 17th, 2014:A video about Accutane was recommended to me on YouTube and I watched it because the thumbnail was a before&after picture and it looked pretty fantastic. I fell into a hole of watching/reading everything I could find about this drug, determined that it was the thing that will take care of my situation, and booked an appointment with the same dermatologist from October.January 23rd, 2015:Appointment day. I went into my dermatologist's office, sat down and told him that I want Accutane. He immediately agreed (thankfully) and I did my first blood work that day and received my first set of pills on January 29th.PRODUCTS USED ON ACCUTANE:CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry skin. (Started using it with Accutane because I've read good things about it with Accutane users. I've never had a cleanser leave my face feeling moisturized instead of dry and tight. I really like this cleanser and will continue using it post-acctuane.)Rosehip Oil. (The reason I started using Rosehip oil as my daily moisturizer was because I read a lot about it helping with acne scars and PIH. I've been using it for about 2 months now and I am very happy with it.)Cetaphil DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion For Dry, Sensitive Skin. (Great face moisturizer. I began using it the day I started Accutane and I didn't have any problems with it. I used it for the first 4 and a half months of my course.Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturizer with SPF 30. (Was a newbie to sunscreens at the time, but I liked this a lot.)Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer. (I’ve been using this as my daily body moisturizer for years and it’s pretty great. I thought that I’d need a thicker one when I go on Accutane, but I didn’t have any problems with it. The smell isn’t really unpleasant and it goes away 15 minutes after I apply it when I’m done showering.Normal Aquaphor for my lips. (Seemed to get a lot of love on this subreddit. Liked it a lot until I discovered Lanolin.)Lansinoh Lanolin for my lips. (The best thing I have ever put on my lips. Lasts much longer than Aquaphor. Leaves a shinier finish than Aquaphor, but it's very manageable with some tissues.)Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care Dandruff Conditioner with Almond Oil. (My hair began thinning a bit and shedding towards the end of the 3rd month. I researched it a bit online and came to the conclusion that Shampoo isn't the best thing to use on Accutane because most Shampoos dry out my hair and that's not something anyone wants to do while on Accutane. I began using conditioner only and I haven't shampooed my hair in about 2 months, which may sound gross but my hair isn't smelly/oily at all. I like the conditioner. I leave it in my hair in the shower while I clean the rest of my body and then rinse it off.)Systane Gel Drops, Anytime Protection. (These are the best eye drops I have ever used. They provide outstanding moisture. My eyes were horrible towards the third month and these were the only eye drops that worked.)Fish oil capsules. (I bought these before going on Accutane because I heard that they’ll help with joint pain and I’m pretty sure they did because I experienced no joint pain during my course.)Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream USP, 0.1% (RX Only). (I was prescribed this by my dermatologist before I began Accutane because I had a few dry, red, irritated patched on my hands and wrists. My dermatologist told me to use this during Accutane too because it’ll help with the dry patches.)Side effects during the entire course:Dry lips.Dry eyes.Dry, red patches (eczema?) on wrists and arms.Minor hair shedding.Month 1Dosage: 60mg/day.Routine:AM:CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry skin.Cetaphil Dermacontrol Moisturizer with SPF 30.Aquaphor for my lips.PM:CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry skin.Cetaphil Dailyadvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion For Dry Sensitive Skin.Aquaphor for my lips. The first month was kinda normal. I had Aquaphor on my lips 24/7 and I actually thought that my lips were not suffering from dryness at all. That idea was shot down when week 3 hit. It seemed as though my lips became asphalt-like overnight, but all I could do was keep applying Aquaphor. Some dry patches on my hands, but it was all dealt with using the Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream.Month 2:Dosage: 80mg/day.Routine:Same routine.I was kinda hoping that I was going to be one of the few who go through Accutane without an 'initial breakout,' but it seems as though the initial breakout decided to take place on my forehead. As I mentioned before, my T-zone was always relatively clear, but my forehead began getting new breakouts towards week 2 of my 2nd month. My forehead looked the worst it had ever looked and I was not amused, but I knew that it'll all clear up towards the end.Month 3:Dosage: 120mg/day.Routine:Replaced Aquaphor with Lansinoh Lanolin. Everything else was the same.Month 3 was pretty bland. My forehead was doing a bit better than it had been during month 2, but it still looked bad. My cheeks, on the other hand, were looking a lot better. I went from getting a new breakout everyday to getting a new one every 3-4 days.Month 4:Dosage: 120mg/day.Routine:Same routine. My forehead began clearing up at an amazing rate towards week 2 of month 4. Towards the end of month 4, my entire face was looking really good. All of my acne cleared up and all I was left to deal with was the scarring.Month 5:Dosage: 120mg/day.Routine:AM:CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry skin.Certified Organic Rosehip Oil.Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++.PM:CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry skin.Certified Organic Rosehip Oil.Month 5 was completely breakout-free! When I went into my appointment for the beginning of month 5 , my dermatologist told me that if I go an entire month with no breakouts, that'd be it. I'd be done with Accutane, and that's exactly what happened. Month 5 was pretty easy. My face was the clearest it had been in YEARS and I was extremely happy with the results. Here are the photos:This is how my face looked like in May, 2014 after I dealt with the incident that happened from the Benzoyl Peroxide gel. My acne was basically non-existent and all I had were some acne scars. This is how my face looked around December, 2014. My acne was at its worse at the time. This is how my face looked during the third month of Accutane. This is how my face looked during the last 3 days of my course (around June 25th)This is how my face looks like today (July 30th, 2015)TL;DR: My course was very difficult, but taking Accutane was one of the best decisions I have ever made.Feel free to ask me anything.1 month post-Accutane update:I'm writing this on July 30th, 2015. I haven't had a single breakout since the end of my course. My lips aren't 100% normal yet, but they're much better than they were on Accutane.

[routine help] Can I use a toner instead of a cleanser?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I use the PC enriched calming toner from the Skin Recovery line after showering in the evening and in the morning after washing my face with water. I've not found a cleanser yet that doesn't give me eczema :(I use spf 50 sunscreen during the day and moisturize with olive oil, vaseline or cetomacrogol cream when I have dry spots. My skin hates nivea or dove cream (thick white creams) and seems to love oils and glycerine.I'm 24. I occasionally get one or two pimples in my face, usually if I go out and don't wash my face before bed. I have some fine lines and my skin used to be very dehydrated but I drink a lot more now. When I get eczema it's on my face in patches and it takes a week or so to disappear if I don't touch it. Make-up makes me dry out so I only ever wear some concealer under my eyes because of chronic dark circles and visible veins. Thanks in advance!! I hope I gave all the information needed.

OCM with rosacea?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Newbie here, I've spent all night looking at grit pics and I'm ready to get me some of that hot, gross but satisfying action! I've avoided washing my face for most of my life because it always seems like cleansers just make my oily skin go into oily hyperdrive, so I'm hoping OCM will be a good fit. Before I start though, I have concerns about oil choice. I have mild rosacea, mostly on my cheeks. It's not bad enough that I've ever really done anything about it, mostly it just means I don't have to put on blush, but I don't want to anger the redness gods by using the wrong oil. I've used olive oil on my flaking eyebrows before with no issue, but my cheeks tend to be quite a bit more sensitive so I wanted to ask first. Does anybody with rosacea use the Oil Cleansing Method and if so what oil do you use?

[Skin Concerns] Area where nose is attached to face always feels raw

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am not sure if there is a term for that area right behind your nostrils (the fold behind your nostril where it is attached to your face? I don't know). That area on both sides of my nostrils is always hurting and feels raw. I tried putting the nivea cream/simple cream I use in my routine there, but it just makes it hurt more or does nothing. I even avoid putting cleanser there because that also makes the problem worse. All I know is that neosporin helps the pain, but does anyone know anything else that could help? I didn't always have this problem, it recently developed over the summer.

Can we talk about fungal acne routines?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
It just occurred to me after years and years of struggling, my acne might be fungal. I just have so many questions as far as routines/products go.My skin type is very very very oily, large pores, and my chin is a wreck with what seem like semi-cysts and deep closed comedones. I've tried tetracycline in the past, as well as birth control, and epi-duo.Current Morning Routine: CeraVe, Olay sensitive skin moisturizer, biore aqua rich p++++ sunscreen.Night: OCM with sunflower oil, rinse oil off with CeraVe, Alpha Hydrox 14% swipes every 2 or 3 nights, Nivea cream. My question is, I want to start incorporating a fungal fighting bar soap meant for the face, like Noble Formula. Where should I incorporate this soap? And is there anything else in my routine that I should get rid of since it's not working, like the AHA? Do AHAs help with fungal acne?Pics are embarrassing and vulnerable but if you think it'd help, I can hook you up haha

I dropped everything and my current routine is a splash of water

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I thought "maybe my moisture barrier is a mess: I'll drop the benzoyl peroxide. Maybe I really have oily skin: I'll stop moisturising."Nothing works, /r/skincareaddiction!! I feel like how I think obese people who say "I've tried everything, but I can't lose weight" must feel! It's awful!!My old routine wasno cleanser, I never found one, or a micellar water, that I didn't have a bad reaction toPaula's Choice 1% BHA every morning and night, let work for 10 minutes.very light moisturiser that I checked every ingredient of on beautypedia (no irritants!)Epiduo (2.5% benzoyl peroxide, 0.1% Adapalen) every other nightvegetables/white meat/egg/fish/waterno carbs, caffeine, red meat, or alcoholwork out 3 times a week, I'm in good shapeshower filter, fresh air, clean sheets, antibiotics, I have tried.I've tried lots of sun, and absolutely no sunI've tried wet shaving. It is directing the path of my life, and It's not a life I enjoy! I love wine, I love coffee! I can't do modeling, which I love. I'm in Italy because I thought maybe it was the dry Norwegian air or whatever, and going out with my friends here for an aperitivo is not as much fun as it has been before, because I'm sitting there drinking water. Dreaming of eating their finger food and tasting their wine.So my new routine is a splash of water.I don't think it's working very well...It's depressing when you stop feeling like hot stuff because you remember you have the look of a pubescent teenager, and infuriating when you look in the mirror and see a new red spot that you know is going to be horrible.

[Discussion] How I (finally) got grits

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I FINALLY got grits today. This is after using an oil cleanser for some time now, and even using the three step BHA, clay mask, oil massage method. However, today was the first day ever I got grits, and I could hardly believe it when it happened.First, I used Stridex, waited 20 minutes. Nothing too fancy. Gotta love a cheap workhorse. Then I use a sample I picked up from Sephora, the Glamglow mud. My skin was burning like I'd put battery acid on it, then it subsided.Warning about the Glamglow, it was a ROYAL PAIN to get off my face when fully tried. I use oil, water, and a lot of massaging and rinsing it fully clear it off. There's gotta be a better way. Then I covered my face in oil, a Pharma Act asian product. Instead of massaging right away, I waited ten minutes for my face it soak it all in. Then, and here is the key part I think, I massaged my face from the outside in, the opposite way I normally would. I saw this as a tip from I think snow white's blog that she got from some kpop star.Anyways, I could feel rough spots and crap under my fingers, and I just kept massaging. Now, this might horrify some, but I massaged and massaged and actually used a fingernail to flick a grit loose. A few more just came out, but it was absolutely weird having very tiny, almost crystal like 'bits' coming from my skin.So. I almost didn't believe in their actual existence, but it's true. Santa Claus, er, grits are real!

Personal - Thank you, SCA! Worst breakout of my life clearing up beautifully, and I've learned a lot on the way.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi SCA!TL;DR started paying attention to my skin, paid a lot of misguided and overblown attention, broke out in a smattering of huge painful cysts and gritty white closed comedones, knew Reddit would have not just one right answer but many different experiences from which I could hopefully determine a good path for myself, found /skincareaddiction, wept for joy, started reading labels, went to derm today, she said you guys were right on a lot of stuff, and I'm noticeably on my way to the best skin I've ever had. SCA, I love you.LONG VERSION: Around the start of this year, I was really broke and in a transition phase, so personal care became a huge priority for me since I decided that if I was going to feel dirt poor, I wasn't going to look it. Skin care was one of the most important steps I took this year to feel better.I went a little overboard and started using - SCA, have mercy on my dumb ass but I humbly accept your ridicule if you deem it necessary - grocery store olive oil as a moisturizer twice a day, as well as night cream (Sephora's house brand) and an Avène sunscreen.Oh, and guess what! I was using lemon juice as a toner, occasionally white vinegar, definitely baking soda as an exfoliant, and was regularly congratulating myself on my "all-natural" routine with so many one-ingredient products that made my skin look oh-so-soft and my pores like...vanish!I was also eating a lot of dairy, which I now know can trigger really painful blemishes for me.So, I found SCA, thought it was almost religious, and then noticed that there were several things that seemed to work for a lot of people. Progress photos really sold me on it all, especially when I found ones that looked similar to the problems I was having. If I hadn't been so ashamed of my appearance when this all started, I'd have some before & after for you all.About two weeks ago, after using La Roche Posay's Effaclar set (salicylic acid cleanser, glycolic acid toner, benzoyl peroxide spot treatment), I spread some Vaseline on my face and let it sit, then lightly rubbed my bumpy cheek to find a bunch of little gritty seeds on my fingertips. I woke up to find that a whole section of the awful closed comedones had disappeared!I went to my derm today after snagging a cancelled spot and she confirmed pretty much everything I've learned on here. She also gave me a routine, which, thanks to SCA, I know isn't a high-maintenance or absurd thing to have.Thank you, SCA!

Looking for help to put together a beginners routine for facial care.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey, So I just turned 18 and my skin hasn't really gotten better the way I had hoped in my teenage years. I've always had the attitude of letting things happen naturally because I figured that would be best in the long run. However, I've decided to try and take action and I wanted to ask for help both routine and product wise. The skin type of my face is usually more oily/greasy particularly on my forehead. I am a senior in high school so I could do a morning/evening routine. Product wise I am very clueless and am open to any recommendations. I am in northern California and my starting price rang is $50. With the option to increase money spend with positive results.

[META] who keeps downvoting everyone's new post?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Every single new post I see is always downvoted. I know the drill; someone wants their post seen, and downvotes new posts to insure that happens. Whoever has been doing this, let me tell you that it's very dishonest and rude. There are people who come for genuine help, and being downvoted before anyone sees their posts just makes the person feel stupid, while we look obnoxious and petty.I personally don't downvote any posts, anywhere on reddit, unless it's blatantly offensive or completely and utterly not on topic for the sub (ex: someone posts MOTD in SCA instead of MUA or something). Yes many people can look at the sidebar, but to be honest, when I was new to reddit I didn't know what the sidebar was or how to look through it (and some people asking for help could very well be new).

"Baking Soda isn't dangerous as long as you use a toner to neutralize it" - Help me out here, please

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am looking for some help to clarify some things about baking soda (and lemon juice for that matter) and was hoping that you all could help me!I manage a makeup/beauty-group in my country with over 18k members, and every once in a while someone will mention how they use baking soda (or lemon juice) for their hair and/or skin. This raises a few flags for me, as I remember reading a lot about it here, how it's a bad thing etc. I keep warning people that the pH is way off and they should avoid it, as it will affect their skin in a bad way in the long run, despite them seeing "amazing" effects pretty much straight away, but people always keep throwing back arguments about how "lemon and baking powder neutralizes eachother" and the same when it's "dilluted in water"..Well recently I stumbled upon another group, where a few of the products they preach about is some Korean brand (Holika Holika) that cointains baking soda. They talk about how as long as they use a toner to neutralize the pH (and sunscreen), it's fine. Can anyone explain this to me? Is it true or how does it even work? I have not spoken up against that, as I fear they will verbally behead me if I even show a grain of scepticism.I find it very worrying how "those" people never ever seem to show any rational thinking about the products/ingredients as long as they have a cute packaging and a "POW!" (instant) effect.I figured I would need to get my facts straigth before ever speaking up on stuff like this, but I couldn't find much on "neutralizing pH" on here. (And I personally fail to see how that is even possible in the terms of cleanser+toner)TL;DR: How to explain to a bunch of "preachers" how baking soda is bad for you despite using a "neutralizing" toner?

[Meta] We've done a link flair overhaul: COMPULSORY TAGGING, new flair categories and design, sidebar flair filter and more!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone! We have been working on a complete overhaul of the flairing system, part of which you can see already :) Besides a new flair design and flair filter, we’ll also be starting a compulsory tagging system in three days. Please read at least the first part of this post so that you’re up to date on all changes to our rules. Contents:1) COMPULSORY TAGGING and automated flair2) New flair categories3) New flair design4) Sidebar flair filter5) Some small changes  1) Compulsory tagging and automated flairAs mods, a lot of our time goes to flairing posts - which is a waste, because users can flair their own posts just as easily, and our time could be better spent on more valuable modding tasks, like creating wiki content, setting up the survey (yes, that is still in the making), creating a product database, setting up HG threads and the like. That is why we will implement a compulsory tagging system, starting August 1st 12pm EDT. There is a list of valid tags, and we’ll set up Automod to flair a post based on the tags used. For those of you who don’t know, a tag is basically a flair in the beginning of a title. If someone would ask about sunscreen, their title could be “[Sun Care] How often do I need to reapply my sunscreen?”See the full list of tags here. We will also link to that page from the submission form for extra visibility. Automod will remove posts that do not contain valid tags and ask the user to repost using the right tag. He will also link to the list of tags so it’s easy to reach. Now, we have thought hard about implementing this system. Because we know that no matter how many warnings we are setting up, and no matter how long we sticky this announcement, there will still be users (especially on mobile) who miss it and who will put time into writing a post and then have it removed immediately because they didn’t put in a tag.We don’t want that. Really, in an ideal world no-one would ever get their post removed because it lacks a tag. Because as a user, it sucks when that happens. We are redditors ourselves. We’ve all experienced that in some way or the other, and it’s never fun. However, in the end, we think that implementing the compulsory tagging system is a good long term strategy. Because it puts a small burden on you, the user, and lifts a large burden off of us, the mod team. We won’t have to put time and energy into flairing dozens of posts everyday, and instead - hopefully - will be able to put that time into more important things, like the sidebar and the wiki.Changing over to this new system will be a bit of a hassle. It will take some time before using the tags feels ‘normal’ for everyone. However, we hope that after a short adjustment period, tagging will become an easy and standard part of this subreddit. And that in a few months, we’ll all say “However did we manage this before?”. 2) New flair categories We've tried very hard to cut on the amount of flairs. We also tried to make sure every subject was covered by a flair category. We were bound to fail on at least one of these attempts...So we have ended up somewhere in the middle. What we've removed:"Ingredients" - it's not used often and people are unlikely to use the flair filter for this (see point 4)"Research" - we're folding this into the "Discussion" flair as they a) overlap sometimes and b) neither are used a lot, so it'll be relatively easy to find the right kind of post when you use the flair filterWhat we've added:"Acne" and "Anti-Aging" as they are the most discussed skin concerns on the sub; "Skin Concerns" is for the things that don't fit into either one of those two."Personal" for all posts that cover personal experience, like a feeling bad about your skin, or thanking the sub."Cringe" for posts about bad advice you’ve seen elsewhere - like "OMG this baking soda tip on pinterest".What we've changed:We've made Before & After into a Selfie/B&A hybrid - so that it also covers images without a before or that aren't meant to track progress at all. 3) New flair design As you can all see, we’ve changed the flair design! Because the flair names will already be featured in the tags, we thought it’d be pretty obsolete to have them in the flairs as well (like we have now). Instead, we’ve just made a nice side and top border that changes on hover - and comes in lots of pretty colors :)As some of you may guess, we have been inspired by /r/AsianBeauty’s flair, made by /u/iamOshawott. While we’ve made the flairs completely our own and are not using any of AB’s CSS, we still want to give a shoutout to their wonderful flair design :) 4) Sidebar flair filter A long-requested feature - and now it’s finally here! This is how it works:Search for one flair - that's the first table you see in the sidebar. Click on any of the buttons and it'll take you to a search for posts with that specific flair filter. The page will show all posts with that flair.Filter certain flairs out - that's the second table you see in the sidebar. If you click one of the flairs there, it'll be filtered out of your view of the sub. This has been organised differently: instead of going to a search page, you are led to a new domain. That means you can still view the front page as you normally would, but without the posts you’ve filtered out.Unfortunately, this is not possible for the first type of filter (at least not in a way that's user-friendly). But we think it's still a pretty neat option to have :) If you want to leave a domain, click on the "Show All" button in the first table. 5) Some small changes We have made some small changes to the sidebar, awaiting the full overhaul that is also still in the works. We have:changed some design;added in the weekly posting schedule;removed some obsolete links;made sure the recommended subs were closely skincare-related, andre-ordered the “Popular Topics” and “Popular Ingredients” links into “Skin Concerns” and “Products & Ingredients”, which seemed far more intuitive. Finally, we’ve decided to remove the weekly Coupon&Sales thread, as anyone looking for bargains can use the PSA filter search. Instead, an additional Routine Help thread will be posted each Monday. So, that’s it! If you have any questions or remarks about one of the subjects discussed in this post, please comment below. --------------------------------------------------We hope you like it :D-----------------------------------------------------

Help :( Absurd dark bags under eyes..

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a guy and almost 30...I'm not going to go into details about how these dark bags have affected my life through bullying, hazing, teasing, dating, relationships, etc. but just know that they appeared when I hit puberty and have stuck around with me ever since. No one in my family has them, except with my fathers father, but he only developed them with his extreme age.I'm also the only one in the family with deep-sunken in eyes. One of my brothers has a similar trait, but it's by no means as deep as mine. Where as my brow will cast a shadow over my eyes in sunlight, his won't. That's the difference. Who knows if the sunken in features is even directly connected...Anyways, I've tried a lot of things such as different nutritional diets, creams, tanning, slapping potatos/and or cucumbers over my eyes, other bat shit crazy home "remedies", etc. Nothing has seem to have made them better. Pretty much the only thing I haven't tried is insanely priced surgeries or collagen injections. In addition, the only thing that can make them appear to look better is appropriate lighting or photoshop :\ I'd love to get rid of them permanently, but at this point I'd even take fading them.I've read a lot of things online and have seen others talk about how "awful" their dark bags were. Only to see their before pictures which you can barely even tell they had them in the first place. What hopes I had initially usually get squandered after this. The largest extreme I've ever took was using make up, which I had a lady friend help me with. However, I know nothing about make up or applying it and even with her help we had to glob on so much just to make them faintly visible. The only problem was that the make up itself was even more of a distraction :\I'm hoping someone has insight and can genuinely help. I'm open to pretty much anything that doesn't break my bank account.http://i.imgur.com/FqAAJuZ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dgGs1OE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/e9Y4hbj.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0qFmFrB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UcJex2y.jpg

Alternative to EltaMD clear?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello sca, i finished accutane a few months back, and have been using EltaMD clear sinde then, to great succes. Now to my horror, i just found Out that theyve stopped shipping to my country (Denmark). Anybody have a suggestion for a replacement? Regular sunscreen breaks me Out, and seeing as i have a fair bit of hyperpigmentation left, a sunscreen that could help fade that would be great aswell. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the annoying post

/r/Skincareaddiction, please help my mum. She is depressed and doesn't want to leave the house or answer the door because of her skin.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone, some background information:This issue started recently. As in, within the last week or two. My mum's health has been going downhill the last 6-7 years. I'm in secondary school(or middle school in america) and it's really depressing to watch her go from the active, strong woman she was to crippled and so depressed. I have told her over and over again she needs to go to the doctors(in relation to her skin, not illness), but due to bad experiences and treatments in the past, resulting in the worsening of her health, she refuses to.http://i.imgur.com/UistGAX.jpg?1About 2 weeks ago her skin came up looking patchy and raw red. It's an orange-y colour in other sections and quite gunky, but can also be flaky and very dry. It's peeling and has become quite puffy, and looks very very angry. This may not be the right place to post this, and if it isn't that's understandable and I will delete this, but my mum desperately needs some help. She's starting to move towards going to the doctor, but in the mean time if anyone has any ideas or has experienced the same and could feedback what it was and how it was dealt with, that would be great.Thank you all so much!EDIT: thank you all for her help, I've showed her the replies on this thread and some images of staph, which this could be, and she has been persuaded to go to the doctor (as long as I come with her), and she's emailing her doctor right now. If they don't reply, we will book tomorrow.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
WOOOOO!!!So what does this mean? It means we’re incredibly popular! A subreddit trends when a lot of new users check out and subscribe to the sub. For us, that means a lot more people roaming around the sub (voting and commenting) and lots of learning. It also means lots of new people in general. We’ve had over 3,000 people subscribe just in the past 24 hours alone! Which, among other things, will mean newbie questions, incorrect answers/skincare suggestions, and possible trolling. Please remember- be patient with each other. We were all new once. While it would be lovely if every single new person dug through the sidebar and wiki before commenting, becoming part of the community can just be too dang tempting. We’re all here to learn and grow from each other. If you see anyone breaking our rules, don’t be afraid to report the post/comment. It helps the mod team LOADS when we get report notifications. If you’re new, please keep our subreddit rules in mind (they’re located in the sidebar- if you’re on mobile and can’t see them, please comment below). Needing something to help my eyelids

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have really sensitive and dry eyelids. They are a little darker/redder than the rest of my skin. They normally only get dry and patchy during the winter, but for some reason this summer they got dry again. Right now I put Yes to Cucumbers sensitive eye gel on them (which usually works great) and then immediately follow with Vaseline.I don't really understand why it stopped working. It even stings when I put the gel on them. Does anyone have advice for a low budget friendly product to try? Or anything else to try?

What treatment should I use for sebaceous filaments on my nose?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I understand that you cannot get rid of them entirely. Looking to minimize their appearance to make them less noticeable.I have been subscribed here for a while, but I've never done much more than lurk without looking into posts in detail. Going to change that now.I saw someone mention that sunflower oil was great for oil pulls. It's probably in the sidebar, but maybe there's some difference in the way you do it for sebaceous filaments?Anyway, can you guys help me out to treat this? What amount of sunflower oil should I pick up (16 oz in my Amazon cart right now)? What else should I do to help keep everything good? I'll probably use the sunflower oil on the rest of my face before a shower (leaving it on for a few is best, IIRC) to help make my skin a bit less dry.

My one year skin journey

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi SCA! I'm so overjoyed to share my progress with you guys.I've always been "acne prone" and since puberty I probably had a pimple or two at all times. It never really got better as I got older (and I was so mad, I really thought adulthood meant an end to acne but alas...) and a couple of years ago I had a huge outbreak of closed comedones that I succesfully treated with prescription azalaic acid.Last summer was the calm before the storm. I had the best skin in years which I mainly attribute to SkincareAddiction and the introduction of a proper routine. But then I experienced a pretty big emotional shock that caused a lot of stress and my already deteriorating mental health pretty much went in the gutter. I had the biggest breakout of my life and nothing I did made any difference. So I went to see my doctor. I started on a prescription of azalaic acid that didn't do much except dry me out. I went back to my (amazing) doctor and switched to Epiduo just before Christmas last year. Over Christmas I purged. It was genuinely horrible and my self confidence has never been lower... In January I started oral antibiotics (tetracycline) in combination with the Epiduo and progress started to slowly happen. The last 6 months I've expecienced AMAZING progress and I'm so so so so happy. I'm still on both Epiduo and antibiotics and have my next appointment with my doc in October at which time I believe the plan is to stop the antibiotics but continue with the Epiduo.ALBUM! :DAnd to finish up here's my current routine:AMSplash with waterLa Roche-Posay Effaclear H moisturizerLa Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Ultra light fluidPMRemove make-up with Nivea Sensitive 3-1 Micellar Cleansing WaterCleanse with Avéne Clean-Ac Cleansing CreamEpiduoI don't moisturize in the PM anymore bc my skin honestly just feels better when I don't. I use a hydrating masque (Origins Drink Up) once in a while if my skin feels dry. I also exfoliate with a green Konjac sponge 3-4 times a week in the shower. And that's it! :D I finally feel like I've got control over my skin again. I used to never go out without make-up, even before the worst breaout, but now I make it a point to have at least a couple of make-up free days a week.Thank you SCA! I've learned so much from this subreddit. :) *edit: formatting

Those of you who are doing OCM but not getting any grits....

Beauty Tips For Body Care
ADD MORE CASTOR OIL TO YOUR OCM MIX!!I've been doing OCM for almost a year now and never, ever managed to get grits....until last night. I did so many things. Tried switching to mineral oil. Tried adding hemp oil. I did OCM, washed it off with a foaming wash, and did OCM again. I used a microfiber cloth. I massaged and massaged and massaged my face and nose, never over five minutes, but you get the point.I finally gave in to the idea that I was never going to get grits. Maybe the grits I saw online were idk mascara, not really...grits. Maybe it was dead skin. Maybe I didn't have any. I gave up and was making a new batch of oil last night when I saw that my huge 24oz. bottle of castor oil was basically untouched. I've basically avoided using it since people say that it can be drying, but seeing the bottle so full, I kicked it up a notch and added more than usual. About 20-30% castor oil to 80-70% safflower oil, as opposed to the usual 10:90 ratio. And I did my OCM as usual. In retrospect, I should've taken a picture. I wish I took a picture. Not a lot, but more than I thought possible. And instead of "grits," I would discribe them more as "plugs." There were blackheads that just popped out. Tiny black flecks. And plugs. With every sweep of my fingers, I felt more and more loosening up, and I push on it and pop. It felt so good, guys. My nose looks like I just used one of those charcoal nose strips. Jfc what have I been doing this entire time.tldr; add more castor oil

Dude here, can someone please give me ridiculously simplified instructions on how to do the mineral oil cleanse. I read the sidebar but am still confused/have dumb questions.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
From what I understand I:-buy baby oil-wet face with warm water-apply baby oil-let it sit for a while-massage it a bit-hope for satisfying blackheads to pop out while massaging-wipe off the oil/gunk with a cotton ball? (I'm very confused about this part, wouldn't that just smear it all deeper into the skin?)-wash face like normal-apply a moisturizer like normalSo my two dumb questions are basically:-won't wiping the dirty oil off with a cotton ball smear the grossness into you?-is it possible to use oil as a moisturizer (at the very end of the cleanse) without looking like a shiny greaseball?-I've read those stridex strips are good for blackheads, at which stage in the mineral oil cleanse would they come into play?Thank you very much!

Facial skin care for a man in his 40's

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So now that I'm in my early 40's I've noticed some deep forehead wrinkles, and some very small crows feet around the eyes, along with some uneven skin tone from sun exposure. Slightly visible pores on the nose and cheeks. Slight bags/darkness under the eyes.So feeling my age and the need to step it up a notch, I consulted my wife. As a guy who has only used soap and water on my face in the shower in the past I'm fairly clueless. I think I have combination skin (?) with a tendency to an oily forehead but dry patches at times around my nasolabial folds.Based on the wife's advice I just started once daily at bedtime:Aveeno Brightening Daily scrub as a cleanser, followed by Olay Regenerist Serum, then Olay Regenerist Moisturizer, then Regenerist Eye Therapy around and under the eyes. The capper is Retin A 0.05% to the forehead and crowsfeet wrinkle areas.Sound reasonable?I have to say, after just doing this for the past two days I think my skin already looks quite a bit better, and feels much better.

My Adventures in Hair, Skin & Nails Supplements

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been taking H/S/N supplements for almost 15 years with very few breaks because I quickly lose the effects. I love them and below are my main takeaways. I would LOVE feedback from others.First: Supplements are not regulated (thanks Orrin Hatch! /s) in the USA and are notoriously bad at including all or any of advertised ingredients but including unlisted ingredients. If you have nut or other allergies be particularly careful for this reason. Don't become yet another oblivious consumer spending tons of $$ on snake oil that might harm. FDA's website has decent resources on effective research.Second: Also, as is the case for topical skincare products, claims about various ingredients have anywhere from zero scientific backing, a few promising studies, to tons of evidence. There are some reputable sites that research either or both (1) Contents of a particular supplement, (2) Science behind a specific ingredient. They generally provide some free info and some info for a charge. Even if they don't offer research on HSN vitamins, it's possible to determine which brands consistently pass testing and then buy from those brands with relative confidence. Below are the main organizations, IMHO, that test. Below that I share my personal experience and supplements' effects.I just discovered LabDoor which tests and rates/ranks vitamins according to contents for free (detailed info on each test for a subscription cost). My guess is they are trying to provide free rankings for consumers to supplant organizations w/much less free info. They reviewed Pre-Natal but not HSNs yet. You can vote for which supplements you want tested next. I upvoted Coenzyme Q10, collagen, and Resveratrol. I don't know how to submit a new supplement for voting but I want to add HSN supplements.Examine.com is popular on reddit because they moderate the /r/supplements subreddit and because people are generally happy with them. They sell guides (aka "stacks") that demonstrate which supplements/ingredients have scientific backing in order to put all research in one place. The stack for Hair & Skin Quality I immediately found online in a cashed version if you, like me, are unencumbered by many morals.ConsumerLab does lots of testing but they told me (May 2015) the only H/S/N supplement they tested is included in their B-vitamin review (appears to be Nature's Life Biotin Hair, Skin & Nails) but I don't know the outcome since I don't subscribe. I believe ConsumerLab also provides summations of consumer reviews but I'm personally wary due to the placebo effect or from first-time users that haven't yet tried better brands.United States Pharmacopeial Convention or USP is well-regarded and offers a verification process to companies who can use their label to demonstrate their product contains advertised ingredients, lack contaminants, etc. They appear to offer a compendium of info but at a considerable cost. Their free info includes 4 brands they verify and companies that participate in verification program, although I'm unsure what the distinction is. Products can display their logo but w/o a subscription it's impossible to verify if they actually deserve the logo although it may be reasonable to guess that USP would go after mis-labled products.NSF International offers what appears to be a complete list of their tested supplements for free. I Ctrl+F Searched "skin" and found a couple. Some important info:Prices and ingredients vary widely. Price and quality do not necessarily correlate. The very high-cost HSN supplements I'm further unconvinced are worth it. I think the high-price is mostly because the vendors have captive audiences that are willing to pay. The ingredients appear equivalent to any found elsewhere for lower prices. If someone feels I'm incorrect, please let me know! For example, a consumer may feel more confident that the higher-priced version come from reputable brands and therefore can have more confidence in the ingredients. My personal experience:I've tried any number of brands from the drugstore and on Amazon. In my experience, there's some variation among brands but sometimes it's hard to tell and I'm not sure I'd remember my impression or brand of every one I've tried. Most have been decent but there are some that definitely suck. Lately I've stuck with Costco/Kirkland brand since USP verified it and it's relatively affordable. I've been on auto-pilot and just re-purchasing via amazon and drugstores but I want to further research brands and ingredient-effectiveness so after I post this maybe I'll go do a deeper dive into the sites I listed. I'm about to start Martha Stewart's HSN since they are NSF certified. I can update on my experience. My personal goal is to find a supplement with the most verified ingredients for a price point I can live with. I want to research additional 1-ingredient supplements I can also take.Below are the results I've consistently experienced. Since I've taken them so long w/few short-lived breaks I may be forgetting some.Skin all over my body gets stupid-soft. Like my bf can also tell the difference.Fewer breakouts. My nails are stronger so they grow longer w/o breaking. My nails also shine. I think they grow faster, too.Shiny hair that appears generally healthier, grows faster and breaks less. I believe this faster growth also affects eyelashes but maybe also body hair. I'm convinced the hair on my face grows much faster which I have to then remove. Finally:Lots of folks take Prenatal vitamins with apparently good results but I've never tried them. I figure why not buy the supplements specifically targeted to HSN? Biotin can apparently cause breakouts so beware. I'd love to hear about specific ingredients that people love and that have scientific backing.Disclaimer/caution: In addition to awareness of lack of regulation be wary of mega-dosing. More =/= better w/supplements. Compare ingredients in your HSN supplements against other daily supplements to ensure you don't get sick. IIRC, water soluble vitamins like Vit C are fine since you pee out the excess but fat-soluble do have a limit.I hope someone found this write-up helpful! I think HSN supplements are totally worth it and an easy way to noticeably improve skin, hair and nails without any additional effort. I'm looking forward to hearing from other SCA redditors!Edit: formatting

Considering trying oil cleansing.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
In terms of skin care I used to use a billion different cleansers, but I'm lazy and stopped using them everyday. Now, I only use epionce lytic gel cleanser (https://www.epionce.com/shop/products_detail.php?itemcode=715462y), in the shower everyday. However, I have terribly large black heads (or more likely sebaceous filaments) in my nose, back, chest, etc.I'm interested in getting rid of these, so I was going to get and start using mineral oil. However, I was wondering if I should continue using my lytic gel cleanser? I've seen some suggestions to use BHAs and/or AHAs. Is this lytic gel cleanser one of those? If so, which?I think the lytic gel cleanser does a great job keeping away pimples because I rarely have those, so I would like to keep using it. Just unsure if I should. Thanks for the help!
