Is it worth trying a retinol before diving into tretinoin?

I'm struggling with pretty mild acne, and wonder if just a retinol (like the FutureDerm Time-Release Retinol 0.5) could be enough to keep it at bay, or if I should just jump into trying tretinoin? Is there any benefit to starting off with retinol first?
