[Anti-Aging] Dermatologist prescribed me a topical retinol but said after 1 refill I should take a break for a year.... is that common?

She prescribed Retrieve 0.05% tretinoin, with a single refill. I am new to topical retinol but as my concern is prevention, I thought you basically used it forever? Pretty sure I have seen posters in this subreddit who have been using topical tretinoin for many years. The dermatologist said that tretinoin is for "50+ women who have neglected their skin, not young skin like yours, so you should take a break after your refill." My skin is not young, and retinol is for prevention not correction, for the most part, no? and a break for a year?
