[Trigger Warning] Can anyone tell me why (in the 90's) my dad's doctor gave him accutane as a "maintenance" anti-cancer drug?

Was just thinking about this the other day and thought I'd see if anyone happens to know. I remember seeing the name on the package and reading the "don't take this drug if you are or might become pregnant," and I remember his lips getting very dry. He told me in passing that it was a drug for acne but it also was given to cancer patients who were in remission.Doesn't have anything to do with anything in my life now. Just curious.Thanks :).
