Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been on the hunt for a cosmetically elegant mineral sunscreen with a high zinc oxide content. Each of these sunscreens has more than 20% zinc oxide, but they perform very differently. For the record, I am a 30-year-old female with fairly light skin (not sure what I am in Mac's foundation, but I am "fairly medium" in bareMineral's original foundation). My skin type is dry and my main skin concerns are anti-aging and redness. Please note that all the prices are in Canadian dollars. I use 1/4 tsp of sunscreen just for my face. For white cast, I rated them 0-5, 0 meaning zero white cast.Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Dry-Touch SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 21.6% Zinc Oxide Cost: $14 for 59 ml White Cast: 5/5 Review: This is the first pure mineral sunscreen I ever tried as it was easily available to me at my local pharmacy. I actually own both the face and body version of this sunscreen and I'd say they are essentially the same formula. I don't know who Neutrogena is fooling here, this stuff is NOT sheer or "dry-touch" AT ALL. This sunscreen has the consistency of diaper cream. It's thick, hard to spread, and leaves a comical white cast. It is far from being cosmetically elegant and I don't think I'd ever try wearing makeup over it. I'd only wear this if you're staying at home or actually on a beach where the white cast isn't so embarrassing, but even then I find this stuff so hard to spread that reapplying is a bother. It also transfers on to anything I wore and stung my eyes a little if I got any too close to that area.bareMinerals Prep Step Mineral Shield SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 23.8% Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide 4.1% Cost: $39 for 40 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: Next I tried this one because I could also get it locally at Sephora. The price is the biggest problem, it was almost $45 including tax for a tiny bottle. However, this sunscreen is very cosmetically elegant. It comes out of the bottle white, but it contains "color-adapting micro-encapsulated pigments" that are supposed to match your skin, which worked perfectly for me anyway. This sunscreen is extremely watery, I would actually apply it directly to my face because squirting it onto my fingers was wasting too much product. This does not sting my eyes, even if I rub it all over my lids. It is actually advertised as a primer, and it does indeed look great under makeup. At first, I actually loved this sunscreen and thought it might be HG despite the steep price. After a few days of use though I decided I didn't like it that much. It sinks into my fine lines and despite the dewy finish, it dried my skin out. It also never feels like it "sets" on my skin, it remains slippery all day, which made me concerned that it was moving too much and not giving me good protection. I think I'll save this for when I apply makeup (which isn't very often) instead of for daily use.Cotz Flawless Complexion SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $25.75 (+ Shipping) for 74 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: This sunscreen is not available to me in Canada except online. I purchased it from iHerb.com and it took a couple of weeks to get to me. I like this one a lot. It's very smooth, easy to apply and the tint disappears into my skin. It is very light and completely invisible. It does not sting my eyes, nor does it sink into fine lines. It is also very hydrating. It does leave a sheen on my skin, but that doesn't bother me at all. The only reason I decided to try another brand was that I need to buy this from the States and I'd rather something more locally available, but I'll definitely use this up.thinksport Safe Sunscreen SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $35 for 177 ml White Cast: 1/5 Review: I think I've seen this locally, but I bought it from Well.ca, which is a website I use often and can get fast and free shipping as it is Canadian. This is my new go-to body sunscreen, but it is OK for face too. It is inexpensive, easy to apply and spread, and it's pleasant to wear. It does leave a slight white cast which I don't mind for my body but I'd only use it on my face at home or on the beach. It is advertised as a very safe sunscreen and I believe it is the only one on this list that is supposed to be waterproof up to 80 minutes. The only thing I don't like about it is the scent, it has a citrus scent that I personally find a little too strong, but at least it doesn't smell like coconut oil lol. It won't stop me from using it and repurchasing.thinksport Everyday Face SPF 30Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $20 for 59 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: This one I haven't seen locally, but I can easily purchase it from Well.ca along with the thinksport body sunscreen. This is overall very similar to the Cotz sunscreen. It is hydrating, non-irritating, easy to apply, and completely invisible on my face. In the future, I will likely repurchase this one instead of the Cotz only because of the availability. It has the same citrus scent as the body version, but again that won't stop me from repurchasing.Hope this helped anyone out there!
