Beauty Tips For Body Care
This is a quick review of the Asian sunscreens I’ve used this year and may be helpful if you’re tired of sunscreens that are thick, gloopy and greasy. The FDA hasn’t approved many of these sunscreen filters that are widely and safely used in other parts of the world. For perspective, I have sensitive, normal to slightly oily skin and have tried western sunscreens from Banana Boat to Cerave and euro sunscreens from La Roche Posay to Heliocare. Ultrasun makes great sunscreens, but imo for the price and texture you can’t beat Asian sunscreens. For sensitive skin/eyes (fragrance and alcohol free) 1) Skin Aqua UV Mild Gel SPF 30 PA+++ 110ml (Japan)Ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glucol, Diethylamino, Polyglyceryl-10 Pentaisostearate, Phenoxyethanol, Triethanolamine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Methylparaben, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Glycol Dimethacrylate Crosspolymer, Stearoyl Inulin, Polysterene, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine, Ammonium Acrylates Copolymer, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Polyquaternium-51 Comfortable, slightly dewy finish. Light lotion texture, easy to apply over large areas of skin. Alcohol and fragrance free but does have a faint sunscreen scent compared to the other mild sunscreens. I prefer it for use on body. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. 2) Biore UV Mild Care Milk SPF30 PA++ 120ml (Japan)Ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Laryl Methacrylate/ Methacrylic Acid Sodium cross polymer, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Acrylic Acid/ Alkyl Acrylate C10-30 Copolymer, Dimethoxy Benzylidene Ethylidenedioxy Oxoimdazolidine Propionic Acid Octyl, PEG-32, Squalane, Hydroxide Potassium, Phenoxyethanol, EDTA-2Na, BHT Easy application, light texture. Velvety smooth light powdery finish. If you like the Biore UV perfect milks but find the talc and alcohol overpowering then you’ll love this. One of my favourite face sunscreens. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. 3) Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel Kids SPF 28 PA++ 120ml (Japan)Ingredients: Water, Caprylic/ Capric Triglyceride, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamte, Propylene Glycol, Cyclomethicone, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Polyquaternium-51, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Ceteth-10, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide Easy application, I prefer this to the Skin Aqua mild gel although the flip top packaging isn’t ideal for travel and will spill in your bag. For daily body use I really like this. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. 4) Biore UV Mild Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ 90ml (Japan)Ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Glycerin, Propanediol, Cyclopentasiloxane, BisEthylhexyloxypehol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Glyceryl Behenate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Diemthicone, Cetyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Disearate, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimetyl Taurate Copolymer, Stearoyl Glutamic Acid, Paraffin, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Ceresin, Isohexadecane, Arginine, Layrul Methacrylate/ Sodium Methacrylate Crosspolyner, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Polysorbate 80, Dextrin Palmitate, Disodium EDTA, Succinic Acid, BHT, Petrolatum, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Sodium Dehydroacetate This one is water/sweat/sebum resistant, and is very moisturizing. If you’re using it on your body you can skip moisturizer. I really like the way this one feels on dry skin, but this is probably not the best sunscreen for hot and humid weather. I’d recommend this one if you’re planning to swim, since it is water resistant and will keep your skin from drying out. It would also work nicely in cooler climes. May cause a white cast on skin tones deeper than NC30. 5) Spectraban Sebum Control Gel SPF 40 PA+++ (PPD13) 45ml (Thailand)Ingredients: Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzote, Bisethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Cetyl Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzote, Cyclopentasiloxane Crosspolymer Excellent sunscreen for face. Water/sweat/sebum resistance and doubles as a make up primer. Most mild sunscreens aren’t resistant to sweat or sebum so if you have oily skin or sweat a lot then this would be a better option than the Biore mild care milk, assuming you want a non-dewy finish. If I am having an atopic flare, this is the only sunscreen I want near my skin. More detailed review here. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. Other AB sunscreens 6) 2015 Biore UV Aqua Rich Water Essence SPF 50+ PA+++ 50ml (Japan)Ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Alcohol, Lauryl Methacrylate/ Sodium Methacrylate Crosspolymer, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxypehyl Triazine, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Dimethicone, Xylitol, Trisiloxane, Dextrin Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, C30-45 Alkyl Methicone, Agar, C30-45 Olefin, Potassium Hydroxide, Carbomer, Polyvinyl Alcohol, PEG 400, PEG-50 Hydrogenated Castor Oil Triisostearate, PEG-3 Castor Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Royal Jelly Extract, Orange Extract, Grape Fruit Extract, Lemon Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Fragrance, Acrylates/C10-30 Acrylate Crosspolymer This was my gateway AB sunscreen. Pleasant and light texture. It has a mildly chalky, lemony scent and a slightly dewy finish. Can sting on sensitive skin types. This has been reformulated and I tried it in store and personally could not detect a difference between the 2015 vs 2017 version. I used about 2 of these but eventually stopped due to the alcohol content. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. 7) Skin Aqua UV Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ 80ml (China)Ingredients: Water, Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Pheylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Biosacchaide Gum-1, C14-22 Alcohol/ C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Disodium Phenyl Dibenzimidazole Tetrasulfonate, DIethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Bis-Ethylheyxloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Silica, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Citrate, Methylisothiazolinone, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Behenyl Alcohol, Tremella Fuciformis Polysaccharide, Xanthan Gum, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Hyaluronate, caprylic/ Capric Triglyceride, Laminaria Ochroleuca Extract, Citric Acid, Ectoin I purchased a 10ml sample of this and I am glad I didn’t go full size. This was the only sunscreen to ever pill on me. I cannot in good conscience recommend this at all. Maybe for body use, if you really wanted to. Metholatum does make some of their products in China, such as some Sunplay sunscreens and certain Hada Labo products (from the Tamagohada line). The HL stuff isn’t too shabby but some of their sunscreens have SPF 130 claims and I’m not even going to go there. Nope. Shouldn’t cause a whitecast even on deeper skin tones. 8) Omi Sun Bears Super Strong Plus SPF 50+ PA++++ 30ml (Thailand)Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Water, Zinc Oxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Dipropylene Glycol, Silica, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Cetyl Dimethicone Copolyol, Polyglyceryl-3-Diisostearate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Hydrogen Dimethicone, Glycyrrhetinic Acid, Scutellaria Baicalensis, Dimethicone/ Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Aluminum Hydroxide, Butylene Glycol, BHT, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance Mild grapefruit fragrance. Has a tendency to separate if not shaken. Absorbs quicky with a dry touch finish but does leave a sheen, so if you’re into that chok chok aesthetic you might like this. Water/sweat/sebum resistant and the cheapest sunscreen on this list. Potential for whitecast for skin tones above NC15. 9) Biore UV Perfect Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ 40ml (Japan)Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Zinc Oxide, Alcohol, Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Lauryl Methacrylate/ Sodium Methacrylate Crosspolymer Polymethylsilsequioxane, Glycerin, Talc, Methicone, Polysilicone-9, PEG-12 Dimethicone PEG-3 Dimethicone, Aluminium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Silica, Phenoxyethanol CI77492, CI77891 Possibly one of the fastest drying + mattifying sunscreens I’ve ever come across. I find that if I use the Biore milks I don’t even have to bother with blotting during the day on my normal- slightly oily skin, but they can be a little drying and if you have sensitive skin or eyes this will burn. Oily, non-sensitive skin types will really appreciate this sunscreen. Potential for whitecast for skin tones above NC15. 10) Biore UV Perfect Face Milk SPF 50+ PA+++ 30ml (Japan)Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Zinc Oxide, Alcohol, Water, Dimethicone, Lauryl Methacrylate/ Sodium Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Talc, Styrene/Stearyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, PEG-32, Glycerin, Methicone, Polysilicone-9, PEG-12 Dimethicone, PEG-3 Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Aluminium Hydroxide, Silica, Phenoxyethanol Very similar to the Biore Perfect Milk sans fragrance. Less talc-y and if you plan on using this on face I’d recommend this version over the Perfect Milk (blue bottle). Potential for whitecast for skin tones above NC15. 11) Nivea Extra White Firming Body Serum SPF33 UVA1/UVA2/UVM with Q10 & Vitamin C 180ml (Thailand)Ingredients: Aqua, Octocrylene, Sodium Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Glycerin, Cyclomethicone, Distarch Phophate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Alcohol Denat, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract, Myciaria Dubia Fruit Juice, Malpighia Glabra Fruit Juice, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Glyceryl Glycoside, Ubiquinone, Propylene Glycol, Tideceth-9, Citric Acid, Sodium Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Polyacrylate, Trisodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Benzoic Acid, Parfum "Body serum" is just marketing. This body lotion has a very pleasant and light texture and is an easy way to get some daily UV protection on your body. You can skip body moisturizer with this if you don’t have dry skin. Unfortunately, it is very strongly fragranced with a citrusy, slightly powdery scent that tends to linger. I would not recommend this for sensitive skin, or if you dislike strong smells. No discernible white cast. 12) Vaseline Healthy White SPF 30 Serum UVA & UVB Protection PA++ 180ml (Thailand)Ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Phenylbenzimidazole, Sulfonic Acid, Glycol Stearate, Niacinamide, PEG-100 Stearate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Potassium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Cetyl Alcohol, Xanthan gum, Perfume, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Stearamide AMP, BHT, Maltodextrin, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate This is very similar to the Nivea body serum (I suspect they are vying for the same SE Asia consumer targets – Biore has also released a body serum with SPF 50 that is made in Vietnam). This Nivea serum has a powdery, floral scent that lingers. I had someone ask me what scent I was wearing when the only thing fragranced that I used was this lotion – not a good sign when someone can smell the lotion you applied hours ago. In any case the texture is light and absorbed quickly and can be used in place of a body moisturizer in hot and humid climes, if you aren’t averse to fragrances. No discernible white cast. Final thoughts: It’s been fun experimenting and trying new things, and I have a list of Korean sunscreens that I’d like to try next. Most of these sunscreens are easily available in store if you live in Asia. Amazon and ebay should also stock most of them. Hopefully this has been helpful to those wanting to try these sunscreens.
