Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve never had perfect skin. Thanks to my parents, I have large pores and blotchiness and in highschool, I had acne that left ice pick scars. However, a few years ago, I stopped getting acne and just stopped fixating on my skin flaws. In the past few months I’ve been dealing with a skin disease called perioral dermatitis (PD). The cause is unknown, it is tricky to treat, and it is known to reoccur (ugh!) I’ve started treating it properly last month, but I have yet to find a cure. This whole episode of PD has triggered a lot of mental health issues. Who knew fixating at the mirror and noticing flaws that were probably always there, would lead to anxiety and acrophobia?Maybe I’m not in a position to speak, as I’m still in the process of getting medical help to address my skin and mental health. However, remembering this Tina Fey has helped me immensely (men of this subreddit, please replace with the appropriate beauty standards): “Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.”I try to remind myself that perfect skin is just another frustrating beauty standard that we feel the need to “achieve.” My acne scarred skin with a rash, large pores, and blotchiness is up there with other flaws like receding hairlines, fat rolls, flat chests, and more.Truthfully, we do notice other people’s imperfection. It’s a fact of life. However, the thing is, we definitely don’t judge others (well, decent people, ha ha) based on physical “flaws” and we certainly encourage people to accept their flaws.I sincerely hope everyone on this subreddit will find their cure soon, have the skin of their dream, and can access all the help they need. However while we search for our cures, I also hope that we can judge and accept our skin based on our own standards of improvement and aim for healthy skin, rather than the benchmark of poreless, even toned perfection.
