[Review] 3 SPF lip balms: Elta MD, Cotz, and Ultrasun

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've tried many SPF lip balms over the years. My biggest complaint is that so many are less than SPF 30 and some are not even broad spectrum. Why insist on SPF 30 for your face but use something less on your lips? Lips receive UV exposure too and are a common place to get skin cancer.Additionally, I found that many SPF lip products have a "chemical taste" and/or irritate my throat. So I started excluding ones that contain avobenzone (which I suspect, but am not certain, is responsible for this). Here is a review for three that I've used that met my requirements. Photos are at the end of the post.Elta MD Lip Balm SPF 31 Active Ingredients: 7.5% Octinoxate, 5.0% Zinc oxide. Inactive Ingredients: Petrolatum, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lauryl Laurate, Purified Water, Flavor, Polyethylene, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cera Alba, Glycerin, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Glyceryl Behenate, Microcrystalline Wax, Quercetin, Thiotic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Hydrolyzed Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum, Glyceryl Stearate, Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum.Contains antioxidants Vitamin C and E. This has a vaguely minty scent, though it contains no mint or other flavoring. I would not repurchase this because I don't like the oily base that it is in. It comes out of the tube as a soft solid, but turns very oily on my lips. The result is a very glossy appearance and some of the product gets into my mouth. The fact that it melts when hot worries me; I fear the ingredients may separate and no longer be evenly distributed (for example, if you keep it in your pocket). The tube specifies that it should not be exposed to temperatures greater than 103 degrees F. Leaves my lips lighter and very glossy (see picture at the end of the post). Price is $10 on Dermstore for a 0.28 oz tube.Cotz SPF 45 lip balm Active: Titanium Dioxide 4.0%, Zinc Oxide 5.5%. Inactive: Alumina, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Stearate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Cetearyl Isononanoate, Dicaprylate-Caprate, C12-15 Alkyls Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Wax, Hexadecanol, Hexadecyl Laurate, Iron Oxides, Ozokerite, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Flavor. This is a physical sunscreen lip balm that is tinted brown. Yes, brown. The brown tint works surprisingly well, though I wish they'd come out with a pink option as well. I don't find this to be drying at all. Contains antioxidants Vitamin C and E. It smells a bit like candy, but the scent dissipates quickly. Tastes how it smells, but only if i lick my lips. I've gone through several tubes of this because I like it so much. It holds up fine in my pocket, though the label always gets rubbed off eventually. Looks brown on lips but not overly so (see picture at the end of the post). I've purchased on the Cotz website, as well as on Dermstore. It's about $6-7 for a 0.14 oz tube.Ultrasun UltraLip SPF 30 Ingredients: C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Paraffinum Liquidum, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Ozokerite, Paraffin, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, PEG-8 Beeswax, Cera Alba, Cocoglycerides, Cyclopentasiloxane, Candelilla Cera, Ceresin, Dipropylene Glycol Dibenzoate, Limnanthes Alba Seed Oil, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ribes Nigrum Seed Oil, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether Benzoate, Lecithin, Copernicia Cerifera Cera, Tocopheryl Acetate, Butyrospermum Parkii Extract, Aroma, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Citric Acid. This is a European product, so the percentages of active ingredients are not listed out. We can see it contains octinoxate, Tinosorb S, and Uvinul A. Contains antioxidants Vitamin C and E. Contains blackcurrent and meadowfoam oils. Because of the UVA circle, we know the PPD is at least 10, or equivalent to PA+++. It says it contains aroma, but I smell nothing. It feels like a regular lip balm, has a very nice texture and no taste at all. I am not sure yet if it is drying (the weather is getting colder here, so it's hard to tell). I purchased it on Feelunique and it's $7-8 for a 4.8 g tube. I like it so far and would purchase again.Photos.
