Beauty Tips For Body Care
Starting a skincare routine has significantly helped my depression and I've read a lot of you reporting the same thing. I want to talk about it!For me, it has given me something to look forward to when I get out of bed, and something to look forward to throughout the day. It's a huge distraction from thinking negative thoughts, and I've been really encouraged by seeing positive results when adding in a new product or technique. The ritual of practicing a physical kind of self care has also improved the way I feel about myself.What about you guys?Edit: After reading through your responses, I think skincare aids depression in two key ways: 1) practicing mindful self care, at a time when you feel like you don't deserve or want care, is extraordinarily helpful; 2) having a skincare routine means giving yourself the kind of structure that depression wants you to avoid -- it means having a plan, which means having something to look forward to the (short and longterm) future for, which means feeling hopeful.

You can read Caroline Hirons' review of Glossier's new product 'solution' hereBasically, she would not recommend this product to anyone. She had a negative reaction to it and woke up with aggravated skin. She believes the percentage of salicylic acid (0.5%) will do nothing for acne and that the large percentage of sodium hydroxide is problematic because when you mix it with acid it produces salt and dries out the skin and aggravates the acid mantle. She also has problems with the unnecessary addition of fragrance, and thinks the formula is unsophisticated. She even goes as far as saying that the packaging must cost more than the actual juice inside.What do you guys think of her review? Have you tried the product? Do you like it?

I'm so sick of going from product to product trying to find what doesn't clog my skin. It feels like every one of my pores is clogged and I can pop these "seeds" out of them or this stringy white stuff. I have no idea what is causing this. I had the idea recently that maybe it's my hard water. It corrodes my toilets and sinks so maybe it corrodes my face?Anyways I am going on a caveman regimen of just micellar water and that's literally it and I'm going to see if my face gets better or worse. She once told me that a major beauty brand always hired sales representatives who looked like models because their presence in meetings was impactful. I can't think of anything dumber than choosing people who are to represent your values based largely on their appearance. So I decided that we are going to very specifically not care about our team looking like models (if some of us do, then we are doubly lucky), and instead be so humble to say we are symbolically monkeys, because monkeys are the origin of all of us, whether or not we are models. But I also don't think monkeys are better than any other animal. Animals and us are all together working on this beautiful small planet we call Earth. I fell in love with all animals during my fortunate visits to Africa and South East Asia. I particularly love elephants because my very good friend Gill Sinclair of our caring and patient retailer, @victoriahealth, loves them and because an elephant once let me ride his loving back in Java, Indonesia, near the Borobudur Temple. Lastly, speaking of elephants, I once wrote that one would have to be drunk to overpay for Marula oil which was a distasteful joke that arose from my familiarity with the beautiful brand, @drunkelephantskincare. @tiffanymasterson: I'm sorry. Avobenzone is recognized as safe and unharmful to the skin as long as it is stabilized— good thing is many stabilizers exist. Unfortunately some of these stabilizers trigger allergic reactions in some people.Studies Exploring antioxidant potential to stabilize avobenzoneStudy: Photodegradation of avobenzone: stabilization effect of antioxidants.TL;DRAvobenzone is one of the most common UVA-filters in sunscreens, and is known to be photounstable...The tested antioxidants were vitamin C, vitamin E, and ubiquinone. ...Vitamin E (1:2), vitamin C (1:0.5) and ubiquinone (1:0.5) were the more effective concentrations increasing the photostability of avobenzone. In sunscreen formulations, the most effective photostabilizer was ubiquinone which also promoted an increase in SPFConclusion- Tocopherol (Vitamin e), Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) and Vitamin c all succeeded in having some stabilizing effects on avobenzone and are worth looking for in sunscreen. Avobenzone is recognized as safe and unharmful to the skin as long as it is stabilized— good thing is many stabilizers exist. So I was in the supermarket, at the self checkout . One of the female workers kept hovering so I thought maybe they were checking I wasn’t stealing or something like that. But then out of nowhere she goes “do you know rosewater?” I knew where she was going already but didn’t want to be rude. She continued “get some rosewater and lemon and put it all over your face. You’re a pretty girl, but you have to work on your skin. As soon as I did that my skin cleared up so start now.”I was really stunned I just said thank you and left. As you can imagine I feel absolutely awful. How do you guys get past horrible comments like this?Ps. She didn’t even have clear skin herself!!!!

Relatively recently (2 months ago) I over-exfoliated my skin. Dehydrated skin, damaged moisture barrier - you guys know it. So, of course, I layered various products on my skin and topped it off with vaseline. At first it was ok, and started healing my skin well, but after 1-2 days, I noticed my skin started itching badly. Thinking it was due to some ingredient in one of the products I was layering under, I began reducing the products I was using under the vaseline, until I was using vaseline alone. As I was still experiencing itching, I decided that maybe it was the occlusivity of pure petroleum jelly that was making me itch.2 days ago, I tried QV cream on my face. It contains petrolatum, but I thought that it would be alright since it isn't heavily occlusive like vaseline is. Initially it was soothing, but after a while I noticed redness on my face, followed by itching a day later.After some googling I pulled up this article: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/552008_3 which notes that while an individual may not normally have any adverse reaction to petrolatum, it can cause allergic contact dermatitis on damaged skin. It does state that this can vary among brands due to the differing amounts of allergenic contaminants (allergens are most likely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), as well as that white petrolatum tends to be less sensitising than yellow petrolatum (vaseline contains yellow petrolatum). I'm not sure how to find out whether the 'petrolatum' in moisturisers is white or yellow, but white is more commonly used.While most people on this sub do use vaseline on damaged skin without negative reactions, I thought I'd share this as I've found that some others experienced itching as well after searching on this sub and asking in the DHT. Looks like I'll probably have to resort to buying me a tube of LRP Cicaplast!

Feeling pretty bummed today even though I’ve been making some real progress lately with my acne battle. I almost always have active and healing acne but lately I’ve been getting breaks between break outs where my skin looks better than ever. I have some scarring and darkness under eyes but I felt good enough to go out 2 days in a row with no makeup.Then I went to my grad school class of 6 people, looked around, and realized I was the only one in the room with any acne. Between 2 women and 3 men, it was just me. Feeling pretty bummed today even though I’ve been making some real progress lately with my acne battle. I almost always have active and healing acne but lately I’ve been getting breaks between break outs where my skin looks better than ever. I have some scarring and darkness under eyes but I felt good enough to go out 2 days in a row with no makeup.Then I went to my grad school class of 6 people, looked around, and realized I was the only one in the room with any acne. Between 2 women and 3 men, it was just me. [Sun Care] US/Asian/EU sunscreens 2yrs+ of testing - My thoughts
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, I've been on a skincare journey for about 2,5 years. I wanted to give you my thoughts on sunscreens since I'm French and have been testing MANY filters, comparing pros & cons, effects etc. Very quick reminder as you guys probably already know that :- USA's FDA has banned Tinosorbs, some Uvinuls and Meroxyls filters.- Tinosorbs, Uvinul A and Meroxyls offer broad UVA protection, are photostable, aren't hormone-like, do not disturb marine ecosystems (as most of them are oil-soluble), aren’t irritating. NB : All the sunscreens reviewed are SPF50 and offer full UVA protection. 2,5 years ago I first tried Eucerin's oil control, which is a US-style sunscreen, very cosmetically elegant. Transparent, barely noticeable, very lightweight. I didn't know yet that the anti-UVA inside Avobenzone wouldn't last long throughout the day, as it is not photostable. Filters : homosalate (B), avobenzone (A), octisalate (B), octocrylene (B+A short)Thoughts : Liked it. I didn't notice any difference on PIH. I tried LRP anthelios dry touch, which has a very slight whitecast and a powdery finish. I was hoping Meroxyl to be good as it is patented by L’Oreal (=LRP=Biotherm etc). It was ok, but there are still old school filters on top of the list. Filters : homosalate (B), octocrylene (B+A short), octisalate (B), avobenzone (A), uvinul T (B), tinosorb S (B+A), mexoryl XL (B+A)Thoughts : I noticed that old school filters are cosmetically elegant and that’s why L’Oreal chose not to use new-gen ones only. PIH still the same. Avène’s dry touch is very bad, white-casty, moves around, sticky, looks greasy. Very heavy feeling, I needed to powder a LOT as if I was setting a very wet foundation. Filters : tinosorb M (B+A), tinosorb S (B+A), iscotrizinol (B+A short), avobenzone (A)Thoughts : I understand now how new gen filters feel and looks greasy and heavy. Still workable though. Avène’s mineral sunscreen is what you would expect. Cool, but it is a layer of makeup. I tried tinted and non-tinted. The non-tinted leaves a bearable white cast, tinted is yellow toned. Filters : zinc oxide (B+A), titanium dioxide (B+A short)Thoughts : Not the best if you apply it on your neck like I do. Bioré UV aqua rich watery essence is probably the best. It is japanese style sunscreen, very light, unnoticeable, runny but easy to use. I tried Face milk which has mineral filters (=white cast) but UV aqua rich is a delight to use. Holy grail status for me. Filters : octinoxate (B), titanium dioxide (B+A short), tinosorb S(B+A), uvinul A (A), uvinul T(B)Thoughts : Perfect, I go through these sooo quickly as I use a LOT of sunscreen. Alcohol could be an issue but definitely contributes to the phenomenal absorption. Difficult to get though. Daylong actinica is quite a special sunscreen. It is prescribed as a medication after skin cancer, for melasma and other health condition that would need total UV protection. Daylong mattifying lotion feels identical, but has RonaCare, vitamin C, E and they ditched the parabens. Both are incredibly shiny and sticky but completely transparent. They also kind of smooth out the skin. You can feel like like your skin is covered with a film and protected. Needed a LOT of powder. Filters - actinica : tinosorb S (B+A), uvinul T (B), amiloxate (B), octinoxate (B), tinosorb M (B+A), avobenzone (A)Filters - mattifying lotion : octinoxate (B), uvinul A (A), uvinul T (B), tinosorb S (B+A), tinosorb M (B+A)Thoughts : these faded my PIH, to 90%, these are hardcore sun protections, after 5 hours I could still feel a layer of protection on my skin. They are incredibly hard to remove, you definitely need a cleansing oil. I could make them work by setting them with powder until they do not feel sticky. Final thoughts :- Old school filters can offer cosmetically elegant formulations but are weak in UVA protection.- New-gen ones are hardcore lasting but sticky and greasy if they are on top of the ingredient list. Workable with lot of powder.- Alcohol contribute to elegance of a sunscreen. American-style sunscreen are great if you reapply. UVA protection is the weak point.Japanese sunscreens are the best.Daylong is interesting in the fact that I felt that they offer day-long protection. NOT PROVEN, just thoughts. Instructions mention to use it at least once in the morning and reapply after sweating or physical removal. Right now, because Biore is difficult to get. I like to use Daylong, my skin looks incredible under powder. I’m trying Natura Brasil SPF 30 for oily skin. It is basically a new-gen filter base sunscreen with powder in it to give a powdery matte finish. Also, the best weapon against hyperpigmentation is intensive sunscreen. Especially UVA.Thank you. I've been lurking on this sub for the past month and have really stepped up my product game! (thanks SCA). Any who, I stayed at my parents for a few nights and I had my Cosrx Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence on the bathroom counter. As I'm eating breakfast my mother yells "YUNGHAZEL!! YOU ARE USING SNAIL SECRETION ON YOUR FACE?! Why! Where did you learn this? Are you crazy?"I couldn't hold it together, I was laughing so freaking hard. My mother was legitimately shocked, confused, and disgusted as to why I would put such a thing on my face."Where the hell did you get this, Japan?"Once I got myself together, I explained the benefits of the product to her and she spent the next 30 minutes reading reviews and she purchased a bottle!Just goes to show, one woman's snail secretion, is another woman's treasure.stay slimy my friends

It's almost comical how bad it was. One of my resolutions was to take better care of my skin this year. I ordered over 8 The Ordinary products because Sephora and everywhere else was sold out. My box was delayed for some unknown reason, and when I finally received it all that was in it was a WOOL BERET. No reciept, no nothing. Just a wool beret that looks like it would be worn by Frenchman who lived in 1940. And they won't send me my Ordinary stuff that I ordered until I send back this horrid beret. They also let me know they just happened to be out of 4 of the products I ordered so i wouldn't be getting those at all. I think I'll just wait next time until the other places re-stock.

[PSA] "I switch my pillowcases all the time but I still get acne on one side, I don't understa-" WASH YO DAMN DUVET!

So if you're on SCA for longer than a week, you might know how important it is to change your pillowcase regularly to avoid The HorrorTM. Like every 2-3 days often. If you didn't, congratulations, you have discovered SCA's favorite weapon against bacterial hygiene: the washing machine (also capitalism, because we all have 10000 satin pillowcases hiding in our homes).What didn't help my acne though was, you guessed it, washing my pillowcases. No matter what I did or how often i changed my pillowcase, I was still getting acne on my sleeping side. My other cheek was more or less fine , but I had a noticeable cluster of white heads on my left that wasn't going away. I don't lean. I don't indiscriminately pick. It's only on one side though, my sleeping side, so it probably wasn't entirely hormonal.Then I wake up one night with my face smooshed into my duvet, completely ignoring my pillow. I had been using my duvet the entire time I was breaking out and hadn't washed it in like a month, because duvets are a huge fucking chore when it's a queen and you're very single. I had also been sitting on top of my duvet at all hours of the day while doing homework and spreading germs that way. One wash later, my acne is gone in 3 days.TL;DR I am a fool and didn't wash the one thing that apparently needed to be washed. Moral of the story, don't leave your duvet alone for a month. Also wash your sheets or get another pair, I suggest the Percale blend at Target because they're cheap af and come in separates so you don't need to buy cotton pillowcases I know you won't actually use.

Bit soppy and sorry if it is over sharing.At the end of last year I had a mental breakdown. Wanted to end my life ya da ya da.I am doing better now, but anxiety is still getting to me. I hated myself. No self love at all.I always loved make up and dressing up. But never paid much attention to my skin. It was always good, I was lucky. Just really dark circles and later it became very dry and I had a few breakouts.This sub inspired me to finally take care of myself, mostly to have a routine and practice self love, which I lack a lot.I used to go to bed with makeup on, just maybe splashed water on my face. Occasionally put on a sheet mask, moisturizer and sunscreen if I went to the beach.Because of this sub, I told myself to stick to a skincare routine no matter how shit I feel. I will get up morning and night to do my skin. Even if that is all I do all day.And shit, it is helping! The distraction of looking for new products, seeing a difference with my skin and also doing something nice for myself is helping me so much.I am investing in ME. I always put others first so this is new to me. I go to the gym but never looked after my skin.My bathroom cabinet is now full of fun skin care products!Can't wait to learn even more. I might have been a bit drunk last night and after I washed my face I said to my boyfriend that I was sad about how bad my skin looks (I'm Stridex purging right now). He hugged me and told me that I was beautiful no matter what and that my skin will get better. It was minor, but super re-assuring given that when we started dating and for the first yearish of our relationship I had almost perfect skin. It's easy to feel bad about your skin and how it looks, but remember that it isn't the absolute end of the world, and those that love will won't stop loving you just because of some red spots.

LOL wrong...First they rub St Ives apricot scrub into your dry face and vigorously rub it (with manly strength) Then they wash it off. Next you’re treated to having whiteheads and blackheads extracted with tweezers (giiirlll.....) I’m assuming the residue gets wiped off but this wasn’t mentioned so who even knows at this stage. Then you get a vigorous “massage” dragging your skin in all directions. Lastly, for the finale, you get a some cheap black peel off mask.Husband genuinely believes the fundamental elements of good skin care are abrasion, aggression and pain. I don’t even know what to say.

I'm having such a hard time finding a drugstore priced hydrating face mask. I used to have a Freeman's brand face mask that was soothing and hydrating. It didn't have clay in it or anything. Basically an oatmeal-lotiony feeling mask you rinse off.I'm having such a hard time finding an equivalent. Everything has clay, which is so drying to my poor winter skin. What gives?! Any suggestions!? Preferably something I can get on Amazon, at Target, or in a drugstore.

I started birth control about a month ago and it's helped calm my hormonal break outs so much. I'm so happy. I feel pretty okay going about my day in only sunscreen now. [B&A] I've felt like shit for months and 2 uses of Aztec Secret has made my life 100x better

Imgur I've been having the worst time with big, ugly pimples for the last 6 months or so and it would literally make me cry when I would look in the mirror. I spent easily $100s trying to correct my skin and was literally booking appointments for dermatologists more than an hour away so that I could be put on Accutane. I finally gave Aztec Secret a shot and after only 2 uses my skin has improved so much I couldn't be happier.For those that have had similar success, how often do you use Aztec Secret? My routine is cleaning my face morning and night with First Aid Beauty cleanser, and swiping a max strength Stridex pad over problem areas, then using the Neutrogena hydroboost moisturizer or Cetaphil face moisturizer. I've seen some people say they use Aztec Secret every day, every other, once a week, and once a month, so I'm really not sure what the best practice is?I have pretty oily skin and nearly all of my acne is on my cheeks and temples/sides of my face with the occasional bump popping up around my chin or mouth/nose.Thanks in advance!!

I was very tired this morning. Got into the shower, stood in a trance under the water for a while. Was thinking about skincare and how I should totally do a face mask tonight and I should definitely put more effort into my skincare routine.Then I decided to wash my hair, so I reached over and put some head and shoulders into the my hands and..... Immediately put it on my cheeks as if I was going to wash my face with it.SighI was very tired.No I did not condition my face after.Washed and conditioned my hair did my normal skincare routine and when I was dry I applied a hefty amount of moisturiser.I really hope my skin doesn't react too negatively too it..And yes I should probably add more sleep into my skincare routine

Just wanted to give a shout out to the Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream since I haven’t been able to find any other BB Creams with salicylic acid in them.I started getting into skincare a few months ago and that led me to change up my makeup routine as well. I tried this BB Cream before I even knew what salicylic acid was and it made a big difference in my break outs. It’s pretty light coverage but it does enough to give me a little boost when going out. Physical exfoliation gets a lot of hate on this sub, and I feel like a lot of it is unwarranted. Yes, super harsh scrubs used frequently are going to be drying and irritating. But there are a lot of gentler options out there, that can offer benefits that chemical exfoliants can't. It seems like a case of walnut shells ruining physical exfoliants for all the good products out there...I have dry, dehydrated skin, and have had to completely cut chemical exfoliation out of my routine. It's been mostly good, but I had a lot of dullness and uneven texture on my chin. I started using my Skinfood Strawberry Black Sugar Scrub about once a week, and it's made such a difference. I'm a bit glowier, my chin looks less rough, and it hasn't dried me out like chemical exfoliants do (I feel like the oil in the scrub has actually had a moisturizing effect). So I'm officially a fan of physical exfoliants, and wanted to give them a little love on this sub.Are you pro- or anti- physical exfoliation? If you like physical exfoliants, what are your favorite products/methods?

Okay, so starting this off. Looooongtime creeper, new to this community as a whole.My skin started getting really bad this time last year. I'd always been oily but never experienced any skin issues. Fast forward to 2017 and BOOM. End of the world. My skin was out of control.I stumbled upon SCA and started my lurking journey. Now I can happily say that I have the best skin of my life, all thanks to you guys. https://imgur.com/a/3sZb4You all helped me decide to cut out dairy to start and then were there with product recommendations when that didn't work. You talked me into buying CerVe in the tub and helped me figure out it wasn't for me. You prepared me for (my very short run) with Accutane, then gave me the knowledge and confidence to ask my Dr about Spiro. You helped me when I was feeling hopeless and cried in frusteration. You cut out all the "Acne prone" nonsense and gave me the real facts. I'm now using an AHA, retinoid, sunscreen and facial oils because you taught me that skin is complicated. All of you helped and you didn't even know I was lurking.You're the best, SCA.

PLEASE, for the love of God, refer to their regimen guide on the website. All of the information you could possibly need about the Ordinary products is readily available on the website and if there is something you still don’t understand, just email/DM customer service and they are more than happy to help you build a routine. Those people on this sub that did all the thorough research on their own are just like you and had to figure it out by reading about each and every product before buying. Please don’t buy a bunch of the products and hope someone on here is going to do all the leg work for you. It’s truly infuriating when someone who claims they’re a total skincare novice & have skirted by cleansing their face with Dove soap up until now buys ASCORBYL TETRAISOPALMITATE SOLUTION 20% IN VITAMIN F and then wants to know what it does and how to use it 😂 End rant!

I tried something almost a decade ago that changed my life, and I feel like I should share it with the world in hopes that it might change someone else’s life too.Ok so, a little backstory about my skin.In high school I had TERRIBLE acne. I tried everything, prescription medication, masks, cleansers, etc. and nothing ever worked for me. I also used to pop my zits which has led to some scarring👎🏻.Anyway, after hs my skin got a little better, but still not great. I still had acne, my T-zone was always oily, and my pores were huge. That’s when a friend of mine told me that oil dissolves oil.She gave me a recipe that was 1 part olive oil, 1 part sunflower oil, and 1 part tea tree oil. The first time I tried it, it was weird to say the least. Washing your face with something that doesn’t lather, it just feels wrong at first. Not to mention it took a little time to make sure I had rinsed it all off. But holy shit. It worked.I haven’t used soap on my face in 9 years. My acne is non-existent. My scars have all faded. Life is good.Now I only have to use it when I’m about to start my period or once a week in the wintertime if my skin is feeling a little dry. I’ve incorporated micellar water into my daily routine just to remove my makeup and make my skin feel clean, but I’m still soap free👍🏻.Anyways, I thought I’d share this with you in case some of you are struggling with acne and have never heard the “oil dissolves oil” trick. Good luck to anyone who’s willing to try this though! PM me if you have any questions.

Hi everyone!A belated happy new year! We hope you’ve had wonderful holidays :) 1) Encouraging product list for Haul and Shelfie postsAfter creating a tag for Shelfie posts, we’ve received requests for a product list requirement, similar to Selfie/B&A posts. This is something that has come up before in the context of Haul posts as well and we get why - you can’t always recognise the products in the image.On the other hand, we also want to make sure that we don’t spend all our time on small tasks while working on bigger things, such as expanding the wiki and creating a command bot to reply with helpful information.So to strike a balance, we have set up Automod to encourage product lists and mini-reviews for both Shelfies and Haul posts. This will be accomplished through an automatic trigger, with Automod sending a canned message for posts that use the tag [Shelfie] or [Haul].However, we will not remove posts that lack a product list. Hopefully with the Automod PM, many OPs will be inspired to include a list of products :) If they don’t, you can always ask for it in the comments of their post!2) Posting schedule for the help threadSecondly, an overdue official decision about the help thread!There was already an unofficial decision in a post comparing helper response rates in weekly and daily help threads by /u/scumteam14 in December. You can see more data in my reply to that post here.The TL;DR is that there are more questions being asked and answered since switching to the daily threads (though that might be part of a general trend). The response rate is the same, but the absolute number of questions and answers has gone up massively. It doesn’t seem like more questions are being missed, and people like being able to navigate threads with fewer comments.That is why we’ve decided to keep the help thread daily.We’ve also rewritten the body of the help thread post to emphasise the importance of reading the wiki/sidebar before asking a question (this will show up in tomorrow’s DHT). Hopefully that will encourage new users to do a bit more research on their own first, so that those helping out in the thread don’t have to spend too much time answering the same questions over and over again! Thanks so much for giving this post a look and we hope your 2018 is brighter and more beautiful than 2017.
