[PSA] Chapstick vs. Lip Balm

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I typed this in a comment and thought maybe others might benefit from this info:PSA: Chapstick vs. Lip BalmChapstick in its pure form is occlusive. Most of us here know occlusive means it stays on the outside of your skin and does not absorb. It is meant to protect your skin from outside damage via wind, snow, weather but it does NOT however, moisturize. This is why people who apply and reapply chapstick in hopes of more moisturized lips never get that.Lip Balm however DOES absorb into skin. This is why it seemingly "disappears" on your lips and after a few minutes you may not feel that slippery feeling like you would with chapstick. It will moisturize your skin but will not protect it from the outside elements. This would make lip balm not so ideal to wear in the wind, sun, cold, etc. because it will leave your lips exposed.Thats why a good thing to remember would be to use chapstick in the daytime and lip balm at night. Just like with our moisturizers for the rest of our face, using the right type of moisturizer at the right time of day is going to give you the best results. You can definitely layer a chapstick over a balm too, just like you would with your occlusive nighttime moisturizer. The reason chapstick is occlusive is usually because of petroleum, or another non-penetrating ingredient. Just like Vaseline is occlusive for the same reason.Lip balms usually use modified beeswax, other forms of wax, or variations of petroleum that have all been formulated to sink into the skin (the molecules have been condensed to be able to pass through the skin barrier)So if you are suffering from dry lips, take a look into what products you are using and what ingredients they have. This is also a good way to verify whether a lip balm is a quality product. If it claims to be hydrating, moisturizing, soothing, etc but you look and it contains all kinds of petroleum or organic beeswax theres a good chance its not going to absorb into your lips. You can pass on that item and find something better.I know a lot of folks here at SCA might already know all this, but hopefully this can help someone who was unclear about it :)Edit: Just wanted to add that this applies to the original chapstick. Chapstick and other competing lip product companies have other variations nowadays that claim to be "soothing" or "moisturizing" and may or may not contain more skin absorbing forms of petroleum or wax. They started releasing products like this to appeal to the people who were trying to use their products for moisture. But this is a good rule of thumb to remember that chapsticks are typically occlusive while lip balms are not.
