Beauty Tips For Body Care
Deodorant - we need it and what we put on our underarms is just as important as our face. As recently study on The effect of habitual and experimental antiperspirant and deodorant product use on the armpit microbiome concluded that regularly used antiperspirants (deodorants that contain aluminium products to reduce sweat) had fewer bacteria in their armpits. People who usually used them but stopped for a few days developed more bacteria. These are non-pathogenic bacteria that live on the skin and don’t cause disease. I’m not here to argue whether aluminium in your deodorant is truly good or bad (and the studies done can prove either point), I’m here to review some probably lesser known deodorants. My husband and I personally break out in an armpit rash with deodorants containing aluminium, but not every deodorant that contains aluminium will have this effect on me so I tend to try and use only aluminium-free the majority of the time unless the weather is hot or I’ll be in close proximity (and probably sweating) with people I care about such as a major meeting at work. I’m a huge fan of perfume as well, but Shalimar sprayed liberally should not take the place of something under your arms. I also do not react well to those ‘salt’ rocks or ‘pit rocks’, so none of those will be reviewed here.Weleda - Wild Rose, Citrus, Sage - was probably my first foray into the ‘natural’ deodorants. I preferred the scent of the Citrus and it was the longest lasting of the three. I found that I needed to carry this around with me and constantly reapply it throughout the day as it’s effectiveness lasted 3 hours tops. Just because something is ‘natural’ doesn’t make it better, but I liked the idea. The Wild Rose has a mix of perfumes/scents from extracts and synthetics making it the least likely of the three to cause a reaction. Sage contains Sage Leaf oil, Tea Tree oil and Coumarin - this deodorant should not be used by pregnant women due to the Sage Leaf Oil. Citrus is also safe for pregnant women as it mostly contains lemon oil and synthetics.EO Organic Deodorant Spray - This stuff is literally alcohol, water, essential oils. The alcohol is effective at killing the bacteria and therefore this brand worked better than Weleda, but I still needed to reapply during the day but not as often. The three scents are: Lavender, Vetiver, Tea Tree and Citrus. Citrus and Tea Tree are a no-no for pregnant women due to the Rosemary oil. My favorite of the bunch was the Vetiver because I’m a fan of the blend of lavender, grapefruit, geranium, cedar, bergamot, and vetiver. Between Weleda and EO, I recommend the EOBurt’s Bees Herbal Deodorant spray - my husband’s current favorite. Pretty much the same formula as EO: alcohol, water, essential oils. This one contains sage oil, lemon oil, and lavender oil. It’s a very ‘manly’ kind of herbal scent, but I’ve worn it before and it is quite effective. It is a more concentrate version then EO as it only really needs to be applied once or twice a day. Due to the sage oil, not safe for pregnant women.Everyman Jack Body Deodorant - aluminum free- This comes in Citrus, Mint, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, and Cedarwood. Hubby uses Citrus for the time being but only grabs it if Burt’s Bees has run out. Even though these are advertised for men, I really enjoy these deodorants as well. With aloe, witch hazel, calendula, and alpine lichen as the main ingredients in these, it’s very gentle on your underarms and has a light scent. The lichen is the ‘natural’ ingredient to help control the odor.Biotherm - Deo Pure - Some of their range does contain aluminum, but the ‘natural’ one does not. The antiperspirant range made my underarm very itchy but the Natural one did not. This brand worked really well as an antiperspirant and there is a light or almost no scent. Biotherm is a European skincare company that boast ‘pure extract of thermal plankton…a type of microflora’ in all their products. Their labs and development are done in Monaco.Kiehl’s Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant and Deodorant - This was my favorite deodorant of my youth before aluminum salts broke me out. If you can tolerate aluminum in your deodorant I highly recommend the Kiehl’s one. I liked the cream texture and the application much better than a roll on or spray and felt I could control the product application. This one also really helped control the sweat for me in the summer.Sanoflore If you want organic, non-aluminum, French pharmacy deodorant, this is for you. I’m currently using the ‘Clouds of Freshness’ which has a wonderful herbal scent. This is not safe for pregnant women due to the Oregano and Rosemary Oils. Sanoflore has a line up of different deodorant scents, but I haven’t been able to get my hands on all of them.La Roche-Posay sensitive skin roll on deodorant - Aluminium salts-free, alcohol-free, colourant-free, paraben-free and worth it. If your looking for a deodorant that leaves your skin soft and has almost no scent (no essential oils) then I recommend this one. You might be questioning the claim of ‘alcohol-free’ when it contains Cetearyl Alcohol. Cetearyl Alcohol is is a white, waxy ingredient made from a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting predominantly of cetyl and stearyl alcohols which are found in plants, like Coconut and Palm oils. Originally discovered in 1817, this ingredient is used in cosmetics as a stabiliser to thicken an emulsion and keep it from separating. It also contains emollient properties which leave skin and hair soft and smooth. It’s not your liquid alcohol that dries the skin out, instead it leaves it smooth feeling.Final thoughts - I’ve tried a LOT of deodorants in my time from the drugstore variety (Dove, Nivea, Mitchum, and so forth) to the strangely crunchy-granola type (Lavanila, Salt of the Earth, Jason), and even some luxury or higher-end deodorants (did you know Clarins even has a deodorant). If I were to recommend one that is gentle, won’t cause irritation and might even keep some B.O. from developing, it would be the La Roche-Posay sensitive skin. Sanoflore would be my second if you can handle the essential oils. Everyman Jack can be used by both men and women. EO and Weleda are just fine if you live or work in a climate that you won’t be sweating in or have the ability to reapply often throughout the day. Neither EO or Weleda will stop the sweating, so you might want to invest in some underarm sweat pads/liners for your shirts (yes, they make those).I have on my list to try out Nuxe next (French pharmacy, aluminum-free) and Bioderma, but they are hard to get in my area. If you’ve tried them, let me know your thoughts!
