[Review] I Try Lip Balms So You Don't Have To: mini-review of all the lip balms I've so far gathered

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey, r/skincareaddiction. So, I've been cleaning out some stuff and realized I have a lot of lip balms from a lot of different companies, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on them, with some ratings. I tend to have very dry lips and hands so both lip balm and hand cream are in my everyday carry. Without further ado:Image for referenceTop row, left to rightLa Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume LèvresPackaging: Squeeze tube with a flared spreading tip; my personal favorite. I'm also a sucker for LRP's aesthetic so I'm glad to see it in place here 5/5Texture & scent/flavour: Slightly thicker than plain petroleum jelly, which is nice because it feels protective, but harder to spread. No scent at all. 4/5Results: So far, I'm liking this one a lot! I find I don't have to reapply as much with this compared to some other lip balms I've used. The person who sold me on it at London Drugs told me she uses it as a night balm, which I can see because it's quite the thick balm. Still good for day use, though. 5/5Overall: 5/5. La Roche-Posay, you've won me over again. This is a bit of an intense lip balm in terms of thickness, but sometimes you just need that.Nova Scotia Fisherman Extreme Lip CarePackaging: A thicker push tube, which does make for easier spreading, but it's also really clunky to put back into place as it has only a thin top cap and no turn wheel. 1/5Texture and scent/flavour: Texture-wise, it feels like your standard beeswax based lip balm, so a bit on the waxy, not even spread side. Not my favorite. Scent-wise, it's a very subtle herbal fruity scent. 3/5Results: As excited as I was for this, I'm not a big fan of it. I personally have never had luck with beeswax based products, so it just didn't want to spread on my lips or moisturize.Overall: 2/5. Sorry, fisherman, this catch is gonna have to go overboard.Vaseline Lip Therapy AloePackaging: Metal tin with full open top. Not my personal favorite packaging, but I appreciate the detail of using metal. 3/5Texture and scent/flavour: Considering the ingredients are petroleum jelly, aloe, and aroma, the texture of this is basically slightly thinner petroleum jelly. Scent-wise, it's a similar scent to the Vaseline Aloe lotion range, so a soft fruity but soapy scent. 4/5Results: Same as good ol Vaseline jelly, which is to say while it worked, it didn't last as long as I want/need it to. On the other hand, Vaseline is pretty amazing too. 3/5Overall: 3/5. Just get Vaseline, unless you're wedded to the flavour.Polysporin Visible Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy (also available in the US under the Neosporin Lip Health brand)Packaging: A simple white plastic jar. Not my personal favorite, but it is small enough to keep stashed just by the nightstand. 3/5Texture and scent/flavour: Super creamy, like a whipped Vaseline of sorts. Scent-wise, vaguely medicinal but nothing major. I really like the texture of this one. 4/5Results: Well, overnight renewal it definitely is! I found my lips were much less dry the morning and day after I use this one. It's definitely too emollient for day use but overnight it works beautifully. 5/5Overall: 4/5. If it weren't in a jar, it'd be a perfect 5, but I definitely recommend you try it out as a good overnight lip balm!Bottom row, left to rightBioderma Atoderm LevresPackaging: Standard balm stick, but with the twisty bit on the bottom and a larger cap. I personally prefer these balm caps compared to the dinky balm caps, but still like tubes the best. 4/5Texture and scent/flavour: Texture-wise, it's a very smooth balm, much smoother than beeswax-based balms I've experienced. The scent however; oh dear lord. It's this cloying fake raspberry that smells good on paper, but once you wear it just tastes like raspberry cough syrup. 1/5Results: A good soothing lip balm and I noticed it stuck around for most of the day, but I just couldn't bear to continue using it because of that flavour. 3/5Overall: 2/5. Bioderma, you and I were doing so well with the Atoderm collection! How could you? There's another Atoderm lip balm I have yet to try that's a tube version, so we'll see what comes of that.Avene Cold Cream Nourishing Lip BalmPackaging: Very similar to the Bioderma tube, but a bit taller. 4/5Texture and scent/flavour: A bit smoother than the Bioderma, but similar texture to regular Chapstick. I'm not entirely sure what the scent is though, it's like some amalgamation of granny perfume and baby powder. No thank you. 1/5Results: I actually didn't try this one out more than once because I couldn't stand the scent. 0/0Overall: 1/5. Avene, what is with that fragrance?O'Keefe's Lip RepairPackaging: Another riff on the standard Chapstick form, with a flat body instead of a round tube, and a dial on the bottom that has some thickness to it. Still prefer the squeeze tube but I love this stick packaging (Hurraw lip balm uses it too) 4/5Texture and scent/flavour: Very solid, not really spreadable. No scent though. 2/5Results: I personally haven't used this much at all as I find I can't really spread it that well. 0/0Overall: 2/5. Good in concept, but I can't really bring myself to using it, since it's so unspreadable.Lypsyl Intense ProtectionPackaging: So this one is the biggest and stoutest of the "stick" lip balms. What I really LOVE about this one is that it uses a slider instead of a knob to control the stick. It's also got a cute honeybee as the slider! It is a bit of a bigger tube though. 5/5Texture and scent/flavour: Now, despite the packaging claims of being a "silky Swedish beeswax", beeswax is only about #5 on the list, with petroleum occlusives and coconut oil preceding it. Consequently, this gives it a smoother texture than a typical beeswax balm. It does have a slight mint flavour and tingle to it. 4/5Results: I haven't dug this out too much but just trying it on tonight, it felt pretty awesome. My dad, of all people, actually encouraged me to try this and it's pretty decent. 4/5Overall 4/5. Not my favorite but honestly one of the better "bee balms" I've tried. Extra points go to packaging.CeraVe Healing OintmentPackaging: This is the "mini tube" version of the Healing Ointment, which does come in full size. Standard squeeze tube, not dissimilar to Aquaphor minis or Vaseline Minis. 5/5Texture and scent/flavour: The Healing Ointment tends to have a petroleum jelly-lite texture to it, which I love. So it's not as goopy as Vaseline. No scent, no flavour, par the course for CeraVe. 5/5Results: I think this is one of the few balms that I can sufficiently say will always have a place in my routine. It has CeraVe's standard ceramide formula and a whole host of other goodies in there. Also great as an all-rounder balm to have on hand. 5/5Overall: 5/5. I would not hesitate to recommend this in a heartbeat. It has been superseded by some other picks that are just as healing (mainly because the Healing Ointment isn't available in Canada yet :( ) but if you're looking for a good all-rounder to have around, this is it.Aquaphor Lip Repair Immediate ReliefPackaging: Good ol squeeze tube. 5/5Texture and scent/flavour: Slightly thinner than petroleum jelly, and even thinner than CeraVe Healing. At least per the ingredients list, it looks like they've thrown a whole host of emollients to OG Aquaphor. No scent or flavour, par the course for Aquaphor. 5/5Results: Slightly more soothing and moisturizing than sticks or plain ol Vaseline. Not a personal favorite but a solid choice overall. 4/5Overall: 4/5 Not my personal favorite, but TBH it's a more than adequate option.Shiseido Water In Lip (shoutout to r/asianbeauty)Packaging: Standard lip balm stick with a cap, but in super cool translucent plastic. It does lose marks for an overtly sensitive adjustment wheel that tends to favor the up position. 3/5Texture and scent/flavour: Texture-wise, it's WAY smoother than any other stick-based balms I've ever tried in my life. It's like cold but close to room temperature butter smooth. It does have a bit of a minty/menthol flavour to it, but it's a distinct kind of Menthol (more VapoRub or Tiger Balm than cough drop or "mint") 5/5Results: I thought "Water in Lip" was just a gimmick. Nope. This stuff is distinctly hydrating and emollient. Japanese wizardry, I tell you. I do find it's a bit light for harsh cold and wind though, so it may not be the best for super dry lips. 4/5Overall 4/5. I am thoroughly impressed by this lip balm, since it actually feels hydrating. Water my lips, Water In Lip. I do feel like it's not "strong" enough for harsh winters, but this could be a good spring lip balm or layered under a more comprehensive lip balm.First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip TherapyPackaging: Tube packaging, we meet again. This tube is quite a bit taller than other tubes I've used, but it does have a tad bit more in the tube. Same classic spreader design. 5/5Texture and scent/flavour: Now, this one is quite unique. It's got a very smooth texture, one that doesn't feel at all like petroleum jelly. So it spreads on really well. Depending on the tube, some of them do have a slightly "gritty" texture, but that may just be a fluke. Mild mint scent and flavour. 4/5Results: Out of all the lip balms I have tried, this one is a good balance between THICC and thin, in terms of occlusion vs moisture. It's what drew me to First Aid Beauty in the first place, and this has reliably stuck around my lip balm stash. I've got several scattered around. 5/5Overall: 5/5. Another great lip balm option for you Sephora lovers. Good if you don't like super thick lip balms but still want some protection.Top of frame, centreSummerland Sweets Blueberry Pancake SyrupOverall: 5/5. It may not protect your lips all too well, but it sure does taste good on your lips. Highly recommend for any fellow British Columbians for your syrup selection (second to maple syrup, of course)Let me know what y'all think or if y'all are curious about anything else!
