Beauty Tips For Body Care
I saw that a few days ago, Lara Pia Arrobio posted in the comments of her IG about Spiro being "literally poison," with a few followers joining in. Since I and others here are on Spiro and so many of us have had amazing results, I figured I would post links with some actual factual basis.- FDA black box warning- https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2008/012151s062lbl.pdf(Page 10 (9 in the PDF) explains the testing, which was done on rats at high dosages.)- Kim GK, Del Rosso JQ. Oral Spironolactone in Post-teenage Female Patients with Acne Vulgaris: Practical Considerations for the Clinician Based on Current Data and Clinical Experience. The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. 2012;5(3):37-50- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3315877/("There are also sufficient data to suggest that short- and long-term use with spironolactone is deemed safe overall, provided certain contraindications and risk-factor exclusions are identified before starting treatment. More studies are needed to confirm these results. Concerns regarding breast cancer and hyperkalemia should not intimidate the clinician from using spironolactone for AV when it is clearly needed in young, healthy individuals, provided specific exclusions are identified up front. In conclusion, data from medical literature, clinical experience over many years support that, overall, spironolactone is a safe and efficacious therapy for adult women with AV in many clinical circumstances.")- Callan, A. W. (1988), SPIRONOLACTONE THERAPY IN HIRSUTISM AND ACNE. Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 29: 135-139. doi:10.1111/j.1440-0960.1988.tb00385.x- https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1440-0960.1988.tb00385.x("The long term effects of spironolactone have been studied by Lumb et al" in animals (rats, dogs and monkeys) receiving spironolactone for up to two years, frequently in dosages over 100 times the recommended human dosage. These investigators concluded that spironolactone is not tumorigenic or carcinogenic.")- Graber, Emmy (2018), Hormonal therapy for women with acne vulgaris. UpToDate.("The development of tumors, including mammary tumors, in rats treated with spironolactone or a related compound has been reported [60]. The relationship between spironolactone use and breast cancer has been debated [61-64]. However, no definitive evidence linking human breast or other estrogen-dependent tumors to the use of spironolactone exists.")- Spironolactone use and the risk of breast cancer, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2016-05-01, Volume 74, Issue 5, Pages AB72-AB72. https://www.clinicalkey.com/#!/content/journal/1-s2.0-S0190962216004151("The current data suggest that there is no apparent association between the use of spironolactone and breast cancer. However large long-term studies that investigate the risk of breast cancer in spironolactone users for postadolescent acne, female pattern hair loss, or hirsutism are lacking. Spironolactone use might be cautioned in patients with a history of breast cancer or those at higher risk of the disease.")I'm not well informed about the FDA, but it seems odd to me that the black box warning is based on one study from a long time ago and has not been updated since it seems there has not been a significant number (or any?) of people who have gotten cancer from Spiro. What is frustrating to me is that a medicine like Spiro which has the potential to change a lot of women and trans people's lives doesn't have FDA approval for this use. (Edit: I'm sorry...this language was clumsy, to separate women and trans like that. That was sloppy of me.)Let me know your thoughts. I work in a medical library so I have access to pretty much every journal and database but I can try to post more articles if they are free.
