[REVIEW] Shelfie review: feat. Paula's Choice, Tatcha, Sunday Riley, Drunk Elephant, and more

Beauty Tips For Body Care
**ETA: is there a way to turn my photos into an album? I didn't intend for this, but right now the way I've posted them they're at the bottom of this giant post**Review of what's currently on my shelf and how it compares to other similar products I've triedAbout me: dry dry dry skin, no wrinkles, very occasional acne - my major issues right now are brightening and evening and the stubborn sebaceous filaments on my noseRoutine: mix and match depending on how I'm feeling. Lazy nights = acid + one product slathered on my face. Fancy nights = acid + treatment + oil + cream/sleeping maskTL;DR: the ingredients that really seem to work for my skin are BHA, AHA, and L-Ascorbic Acid. Niacinamide, arbutin, acetyl glucosamine, blah blah blah don't do anything. Check out Cosrx BHA, Sunday Riley Good Genes, and Nufountain C20+Ferulic.Storage: Jerrybox 360 blahblah rotating makeup organizer (Amazon)I really like this BUT I would be very careful about purchasing it - I had to purchase my Jerrybox organizer THREE times from Amazon because each time it would arrive damaged. Spoiler alert: all three were damaged, so I ended up keeping the least broken one and returning the other two. It has 4.5 stars on Amazon and thousands of reviews so I'm not sure why no one else seems to have had this issue? The first time, the rotating base had a large 3-inch crack and the "walls" had multiple scratches that were also about 3 inches long. The second time, the rotating base had a smaller crack (probably only 1cm), and the walls had scratches, but smaller ones, BUT the little notches that hook onto the base were completely smashed and so I couldn't assemble the organizer. The third time, the base was cracked again, and the little notches were smashed again. The company packages each piece individually in plastic wrap and the entire thing is encased in bubble wrap, so I'm really confused how the plastic pieces are getting damaged. The Jerrybox is a lazy susan divided into four quarters - this is how I've split my photographs.Tatcha water cream:Will not repurchase. Does nothing except (kind of) moisturize. I don't have much to say about this because it was such a bland product, and not in a good way. Texture is very silicone-y despite being a water-gel cream.Alternative:If you like the gel cream texture, try instead the Gekka Sleeping Mask (AB) - it's one of my favorites, contains licorice, and I've repurchased the Gekka twice.Tatcha lip balm:Will not repurchase. The gold flakes are a fancy idea, but VERY impractical in real life. They do not dissolve, so you can't wear this out in public because you'll have gold flakes on your lips. And no, not in a cool Pat Mc-Grath editorial makeup kind of way. Also, the packing looks and feels very cheap for the price you pay. It's moisturizing but not as much as Smith's rose salve. I wanted to like this because I saw squalane in the ingredients, but I really cannot justify a lip balm that I can't wear during the day due to gold particles.Alternative:I'm going to stick with my original Smith's Rosebud SalveGarnier miceller water (blue cap - waterproof makeup):Gentle, takes off waterproof makeup, doesn't irritate eyes, this is my 12th or so bottle.Compared to:Bioderma pink cap - I know this is the OG but it stung my skin and didn't get off all my makeupBifesta Makeup Remover - Bifesta seems to have a bit more cleansing power but leaves an oily filmy feelingGarnier micellar water (pink cap) - weaker cleansing power than the blue cap; therefore I prefer blue capCosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power LiquidWhoa this is STRONG tingling/stinging on my skin. I've been using BHA for 3 years now and I can use Good Genes and Framboos, but this stings the most. When I do get the guts to use it, I get silky skin afterwards but since it hurts more than GG/Framboos and doesn't have better results, I think I'll stick with those. Otherwise, this is a great acid for the price.Sunday Riley Juno oilI like it but my skin isn't super picky about facial oils. Not much to say about it - it does the job, moisturizes my skin and plays nicely with the other parts of my routine. Has an herbal scent that I really enjoy. I bought this during the Skinstore 30% off Black Friday sale, so wait for a sale if you're interested. Probably won't repurchase, but only because there are always ~new~shiny~ facial oils to try, not because I don't like Juno.Tatcha face mistI do like this because it's the most hydrating mist I've found. But again, it's overpriced and I'm sure there is a better mist somewhere out there. This is my second-and-a-half bottle (I've already gone through 1 full-size and 1 travel-size bottle). I complained about the lip balm packaging earlier - this mist has none of those problems. It's in a luxe glass bottle with a goldtone metal pump. The mist is very fine and even. Everything is great, except the price. Probably won't repurchase.Alternative:I suspect that any of Hada Labo's lotions will have a similar effect, so when I finish this I'm planning to see if I can refill it with Hada Labo.Leejiham (or leegeeham) Grow Vita Propolis CreamVery nice and moisturizing. Plush creamy texture. BUT...this is so perfumed I can't stand it on my face. Smells very floral. The scent is not unpleasant and would be a nice real perfume, but on my face it's just too much. I'm very sad because LJH has been a solid brand for me in the past (propolis + tea tree ampoules). Will repurchase ampoule, will not repurchase this cream.Compared to:LJH vita propolis serum/ampoule - no comparison. I was using my fourth bottle when I dropped it on the ground and it shattered (hence, why it's not in these photos). The ampoule is equally hydrating and soothing and IS NOT PERFUMED. I would say it's worth the higher price.Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster (mine is the old packaing/name, RESIST Skin Transforming Multi Correction Treatment)Alas, this does nothing for me. I have very red skin and this didn't reduce the redness or have any other effect. It's surprisingly hydrating and has a nice creamy texture (it's like a cream in a tube rather than a watery serum). I think AzA might not be for my skin - I used it way back when Curology was PocketDerm, and it did nothing for me then either (and I went through two bottles of the Curology). Will finish but won't repurchase.Cosrx BHA Blackhead LiquidHG. This is my 4th bottle. I will keep repurchasing. Keeps my skin clear, keeps the sebaceous filaments down, and I actually find this kind of moisturizing! (On really REALLY lazy nights, I'll slather a few layers of this and nothing else and wake up with decent skin.) Will repurchase, and already have.Compared to:Paula's Choice BHA (the classic one) - I've seen reviews here on SCA that say that PC is stronger than the Cosrx, and I'm sad to say that wasn't my experience. Now that I've been using the Cosrx for so long, I was hoping to find something stronger because I feel that it's good at maintenance but not at really kicking out the last bit of the SFs on my nose. PC feels stronger on my skin in that it's less hydrating and feels more irritating, but I haven't seen stronger results. Cosrx is cheaper for me and I prefer the pump packaging, so I'll keep buying the Cosrx.Tatcha The EssenceNice job Tatcha! The ingredients list on this is pretty good (I don't think I saw any silicone)! But also, it's pretty much the same as every other FTE - Missha, Secret Key, Cosrx, SK-II, Manyo Factory, Neogen, etc... Will not repurchase.Compared to:Cosrx Galactomyces - I found the Cosrx a bit more moisturizing (maybe just due to the Cosrx being slightly more viscous) and it's way cheaper. Will repurchase Cosrx, not TatchaSK-II - I had a deluxe sample of this and I liked it quite a lot; if I were to splurge I would choose SK-II over TatchaI haven't tried any other brands of FTEs but they're similar to Tatcha just based on the ingredients list.Ocusoft Lid Scrub FoamMy eye doctor recommend this as an eye wash to me. It's indeed very gentle on the eyes - BUT it also is a great, gentle face wash! I suspect it has a very low pH due to it being easy on the eyes, but I don't have any pH testing strips. Regardless, I use this on my face and it doesn't dry my dry skin out. Also, two pumps once daily and the bottle lasts me anywhere from 5-7 months, depending on how consistently I use it. Purchased on Amazon. Will repurchase - this is my second bottle.Paula's Choice RESIST Brightening EssenceI bought this because (1) arbutin, (2) licorice, (3) acetyl glucosamine. Unfortunately, it did nothing except very very slightly hydrate my skin (and not as much as say, Cosrx Galactomyces). I saw some brightening on the very first night I used this, but after that - zilch. Nota bene: if you want this, buy it from Amazon. It's literally half price ($21 vs $42 on the PC site). And it's sold by PC/Amazon, so I'm confident it's not fake. (Also, Amazon is listed as an approved retailer on the PC site.) Will not repurchase. This is missing the lid because I dropped the glass dropper cap and it shattered. This was the same day I also dropped my LJH propolis serum and shattered that. Was a very sad day. It's thin enough that you can just pour it out of the bottle though.Sunday Riley UFO face oilMy skin loves the Cosrx BHA so much I decided to try other forms of BHA. I bought this during Sephora's 20% VIB sale. The SA tried to talk me out of it because she said it was "really strong" and "for oily skin" - I have dry and somewhat sensitive skin - but I love it. It doesn't irritate my skin, I don't mind the scent, and I do feel like it seems to help de-congest my pores. NB: don't buy from Sephora @ 20% off; wait until the Dermstore/Skinstore/Lookfantastic 30% off sales. Will probably repurchase.Paula's Choice 10% Niacinamide BoosterProbably won't repurchase. Niacinamide doesn't seem to do anything for my sun freckles, or even my skintone. To test this product, I've been using it neat and I really haven't seen any results. Thank you, next.Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing MaskI REALLY wanted to like this. r/AB raves about it. But it just seems very meh. Hydration? Kind of, I guess. Brightening? Not really. Chok chok skin? Meh...I would say I won't repurchase this except I did, when I was at the airport duty free (I hadn't tried my sample yet but it was on sale). So now I have one full-size, unopened tube of this that I need to finish, in addition to this deluxe sample.Alternative:Gekka overnight mask (AB). I love this. Plump, bouncy skin. Seems to brighten. Super hydration in a lightweight, watery gel cream.Drunk Elephant C-Tango Eye CreamProbably will not repurchase. I really, really liked the texture of this. It was lush but not oily. It did hydrate. It has ceramides and vitamin C and licorice and a bunch of other goodies. But I feel like the ingredients list isn't as amazing as C-Firma or Framboos. And it's expensive (I bought during the Sephora 20% sale.) And I probably liked the texture due to the polymers. Ack. This is the first eye product I've bought, and I'm sure I can find something just as good. Maybe I will repurchase.Drunk Elephant Framboos AHAI'm torn on this one. The first few times I tried it neat, I felt like it didn't hydrate and formed a film. When I layered other products either over or under, it left a film that pilled. I stopped using it for awhile for these reasons. But recently, I've gone back to using it solo and found that it actually seems more hydrating than I remember! It doesn't pill anymore! So maybe my skin was in worse condition back then. It performs just like a standard AHA - keeps my pores clear and my skin smooth. I wasn't going to repurchase this, but maybe now I will. TBD, because I also have Good Genes and Farmacy Honeymoon Glow to take the place of an AHA serum.Compared to:Sunday Riley Good Genes - I think I like Good Genes better; it seems to be more hydrating and effective.Farmacy Honeymoon - I'm just now starting to use the Farmacy, and I really like it so far. It is more of a serum/lotion texture so it definitely does not form a film (unlike the clear gel of Framboos). Farmacy smells like real honey (not the fake sugary "honey" scent that beauty companies make). If I had to pick one to repurchase, it would probably be the Farmacy. Better texture, better price, better scent.Sunday Riley Good GenesGG has been covered before so I'll just say that I like it a lot. I like the texture (although sometimes if I layer too many products under or over, it starts to pill). GG seems to hydrate, which is really nice with an acid product. Keeps my pores clear of sebaceous filaments. It's expensive but I'm planning to repurchase during the next 30% off sale (b-glowing, dermstore, skinstore, lookfantastic).Compared to:Farmacy Honeymoon - see above for more thoughts. I'm just starting to use Farmacy Honeymoon whereas I'm almost finished with my mini bottle of Good Genes. But so far, I really like Farmacy. If I still like it at the end of the bottle, I will repurchase Farmacy instead of Good Genes.Nufountain C20+ FerulicBUYBUYBUYBUY this. If you purchase it from Amazon they make it fresh to order. Gives me crazy glow.Compared to:Drunk Elephant C-Firma - I finished an entire full-size bottle of C Firma and didn't see the effects that I saw with the Nufountain.Melano CC - I finished an entire tube of Melano CC and didn't see any effects. I read somewhere on here that Melano CC was also LAA, but unfortunately I didn't see results.Timeless - everyone cites the Timeless instead of Nufountain when talking about SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic dupes, but I *hated* the Timeless. It had an odd texture - it was very thick and not watery like Nufountain/SkinCeuticals. It didn't do anything, either. I ordered it from Amazon and maybe I didn't check the seller carefully, but I had a hard time finishing the Timeless bottle. I think I might have actually tossed it when I finished 75%. Buy the NuFountain, people.Lancer Omega OilWill not repurchase. I wanted to like this because fermented, but this was such a disappointment. First of all, clear bottle = omg oxidation. Second, it smelled slightly rancid on the first day I opened it, right after I bought it from Sephora. I considered returning it but I live really far from Sephora, so I decided to keep using it. It's a very thin, runny oil but I prefer thicker oils. It is just okay. I'm lucky that my skin is pretty tolerant of any facial oil, but this means that my oils need to have some element of skincaretainment (Sunday Riley Juno = good scent, pretty bottle, plush texture). This oil was so boring (clear bottle, meh scent, thin texture). I don't recommend it to anyone - it's not cheap and there are SO many other oil options.Alternative:Literally any other facial oil. Dr. Lancer, try again.Paula's Choice RESIST BHA 9Sigh. My skin loves BHA but this did nothing for me. It was very highly recommended by a few people on different forum I frequent, and Ratzilla also positively reviewed it, so I bought it. It's got a texture like glycerin - thick and sticky. Doesn't irritate my skin, but it did not do any of the usual BHA things either. Won't repurchase. Don't recommend. The bottle is tiny.Shu Uemura Ultim8 Cleansing OilShu had a 25% sale earlier this year so I bought the jumbo size cleansing oil. I'd heard good things about the Ultim8 line, but it's really meh for me. Shu is purely a luxury cleansing oil in my mind - there are other great cleansing oil options, so I only buy Shu as an occasional treat for myself. The last Shu oil I bought was the green one (Anti/Oxi?) and I liked that one better due to the scent and slightly thicker texture. I won't repurchase Ultim8, and if I do repurchase a Shu cleansing oil it'll be the green one.Alternative:Illiyoon cleansing oil - lovely hanbang scent and plush texturePond's Cleansing Oil - this might be an Asia exclusive; it comes in a goldenrod-colored bottle and is made of (relatively) fancy oils like rose and grapeseed and it's dirt cheap. I buy about 4-5 bottles each time I go to Asia. This is my usual cleansing oil.Compared to:Tatcha Cleansing Oil - I finished 2 full-size and 2 travel size bottles of the Tatcha camellia cleansing oil. It's a very serviceable oil, but I felt the texture was too thin (again, I prefer thicker oils). The scent was very generic. I strongly prefer the Pond's and Illiyoon oils. If you want to treat yourself, get the Shu Uemura green oil.https://i.redd.it/v6bgqtqxdy521.pnghttps://i.redd.it/lpb43r0zdy521.pnghttps://i.redd.it/yrmbb580ey521.pnghttps://i.redd.it/yk3q5se1ey521.png
