Beauty Tips For Body Care
I made a comment on a post at r/AsianBeauty about fading hyperpigmentation but in fear of having my post deleted lol I named the ingredients I used without naming the products. I had a lot of people ask me on that post about what I used and I'm hoping that to save time from DMing everyone who asked, I thought I could post here instead? (I don't mean to stir tea about the subreddit though lol I love them but I saw people's recs on the same post get deleted before I even posted and I got worried, so...)Just some background info about my skin: I've had some form of acne for the last 15 years and while my skin is better now than it has ever been in the span of that time, I'm extremely prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (for reference, my skin is Type 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale). Prior to my current skincare routine, my PIH would often last longer than the pimple it succeeded - often staying on my skin for months at the time. Below I talk about some of the products & ingredients I've tried for my PIH and which ones worked for me/didn't.What didn't work:AHAs: I read a lot of stuff about how they're supposed to be great for hyperpigmentation, but I've never seen results despite how many AHA products I've tried. I find them great for keeping my pores & skin texture unclogged though. My fave AHA product so far is the Cosrx AHA Power Liquid and Hop & Cotton's exfoliant (they do custom skincare so the formulation can be to your preference)Vitamin C: I have only tried a few with various vit c derivatives but I've never seen results. They either do nothing or have irritated my skin to the point that I wouldn't continue usage. I've tried the OST C21 serum, Klairs Vitamin C Drops and Hop & Cotton's customised moisturiserNiacinamide: a really popular ingredient at the moment for PIH but idk if I see discernable results with fading them away. I've tried a lot of stuff with niacinamide that I'm having trouble remembering them all, but my fave so far is probably Stratia's Rewind Essence because at least it felt hydrating. Also contained other ingredients I like too. However, I do feel niacinamide contributes to making my skin tone look even + prevents new PIH from forming as much. It also has a plethora of other benefits outside fading acne marks too, so I ain't mad about using it in skincare knowing it has other uses tooWhat worked for me:Azelaic acid: idk what it is about this wonder ingredient, but it works well for keeping my acne's inflammation down as well as fading my acne scars at a crazy fast rate. I don't have rosacea myself but aZa is supposed to be good for that too. Azelaic acid is available OTC in my country, thank goodness. The one I use is called Azclear Medicated Lotion. Costs about $13AUD for meArbutin: a lot of Asian skincare like lotions and sheet masks seems to contain this product, but the only one that made a dent in fading my PIH as quickly as possible was The Ordinary's Alpha Arbutin + HA serum. Maybe because it contained the max % you could have of arbutin in a formulation (2%) whereas other products I've seen with arbutin never disclose the amount used. Too bad they no longer ship this to my country anymoreRosehip oil: like azelaic acid, this helps with my acne and PIH alike. Oilier finish, of course. I've used a couple of rosehip oil brands out there, but the one I've seen most results with is from The OrdinaryTamanu oil: I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with tamanu oil because when applied all over my face, it breaks me tf out. But applied as a spot treatment, it's pretty decent on acne and PIH as well. Mine is from an Aussie brand called MoogooUsing SPF daily: like I mentioned, my skin tone is very prone to tanning easily when in the sun and I only recently learned how this can affect the rate that my PIH appears and stays on my skin. My sun tans do tend to fade away veryyyyy slowly. I feel that applying facial SPF regularly has contributed to lessening the chances of developing nee PIH and the darkening of current ones. I've tried a lot of sunscreens out there but my fav atm has to be the Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UVWhat I haven't tried:Retinoids: aside from having been on Roaccutane during my late teen years, I've never tried vitamin A in its topical form though. As I get closer to my late 20s, it's something I'd like to soon reap the benefits from though..Lol if you read up to the end of this post, I'd like to offer you my virtual handshake! I get the feeling this is going to be a juggernaut of a post but I do hope this helps someone out there who seems to be at their wit's end about their PIH...
