[Misc] Almost Got Played Again by a Skincare MLM

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I was checking out at a local donut shop and saw that there was a raffle for a free microdermabrasion treatment. There was no branding on it and I figured why not so I popped my business card in. I got a voicemail about a week later saying I had won- how exciting it is to be a super special winner! Ever skeptical, I asked for details on the offer and her practice and was just met with a list of potential appointment times (one of which was in an hour….hmmm) and an address. She encouraged me to schedule as soon as possible because her slots are always filling fast. I told her I’d get back to her because I was at work, so she texted me the “details” and encouraged me to bring some friends. Red flag- they just have free treatments to go around for anyone? I had to prod further and ask what organization she was with, and only then she revealed to me this was the MaRy kAy MiCrOdErMaBrAsIoN eXpEriEnce. A quick google let me know this was just the name of one of their creams, not an actual microdermabrasion treatment because they’re literally not even allowed to touch people’s faces. I politely declined but wished I was harsher in how misleading her whole approach was and how awful the experience would have been.“It’s free, so maybe it wouldn’t be bad” my friend suggested, but I KNEW how bad it truly would have been. 2 years ago a different friend invited me to get a free facial with a coupon she had won. Expecting maybe a 30-60 minute pamper session for free, I ended up fucking trapped in the back closet of an art supply store for THREE HOURS on a Tuesday night with some mega Mary Kay Karen. All the while being encouraged to put 8 brand new trial sized fragrance filled products on my already sensitive skin, and being preached to about the self-love I could gain if I just bought their creams. We had class in the morning and were infuriated at how long the bullshit was dragged out, and how this lady made us “consult” with her one on one before leaving- basically one more pity party to try to get us to buy something.Moral of the story- make sure to flesh out the deets of any free skincare offers or any offers for that matter. You might just end up cooped up in a closet full of paint and yarn for hours being peddled snake oil and girl power in hopes the Stockholm Syndrome will kick in and you’ll spare some cash. Never again.
