[Miscellaneous] The Fragrance fear-mongering, where did it start?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Just want to have a constructive, respectful discussion regarding how fragrance in skincare became such a huge controversy. Recently it has become something that has piqued my interest quite a lot. I understand that some individuals prefer or aren’t against having fragrance in their skincare. I personally just don’t like fragrance because too much of it does irritate my skin, but I’m not opposed to it either. If one or two of my products have it, it’s nothing to worry about. However, there’s also a group that is vehemently against anything with fragrance and will flat out harass individuals that don’t mind it with “This will cause harm in the long term” or “Wrong! I can’t believe you’re using fragrance since it has no benefits!” Those two statements are true to a certain extent, but I still don’t see no reason to “shame” someone for liking fragrance. Now, my question is when did you guys see this topic become a “controversy”? Obviously with Fenty Beauty it has become much discussion within the skincare community as of now. And not to point fingers, but with Hyram becoming so huge and influential, I think he has fed the fragrance fear-mongering substantially. I want to see everyone’s perspective on how this all started within the community :)
