Beauty Tips For Body Care
In June there were a lot of posts about black-owned skincare companies to support. In order to keep the momentum going, I’m reviewing the black-owned face wash, moisturizer, and Vitamin C serum that I’ve been using.A lot of the brands that were suggested in posts like this did not have many reviews on the subreddit, so I’d like to share my own experiences to help people shopping in the future. I invite you to add your own reviews of black-owned products you’ve been using to this post too!My Deets (to contextualize reviews)Skin type: Dry/prone to redness, blessed with a resistance to acneRoutine: AM - splash with water, vit C serum, moisturize, sunscreenPM - wash face, tretinoin (3x/week), moisturizeSkincare ~Philosophy~: Simple is good (though it took me too many years to realize this), my skin is happiest with a short routine that has constancy. However, I get lazy, so products must feel luxurious/fun/pretty to motivate me to stick to my routine. I don’t mind spending more than drug store, but as a grad student, I need somewhat reasonable pricesReviewsCleanser: Nolaskinsentials - The Real You Jelly CleanserPrice: $21.55 for 4ozPros:SO PRETTYFeels light and refreshingCons:Light con - The aloe in the face wash comes through scent wise, and sometimes I’m not into thatRe-buy? For sure! I think it’s great for the summer, might switch to something more cream based in the winterMoisturizer: Nolaskinsentials - Hydra CremePrice: $21.55 for 4ozPros:My skin is always baby soft in the morning after using itGlides on skin, and sinks in nicelyCons:I’m not crazy about the fragrance in this, it’s pleasant like a cinnamon, but it’s a hair too strong for me. Not sure if I’ve gotten used to it or the smell has faded over time, but it doesn’t bother me as much nowDon’t love that it’s in a jar, but c’est la vieRe-buy? Yep, but wouldn’t be opposed to trying a different option that has less of a scentVitamin C Serum: Hyper - Brightening Clearing Vitamin C SerumPrice: $36.00 for 0.5 ozPros:I love this formulation, it’s a light weight gel that rubs in really easily. No acidic smell/sticky texture that I’ve experienced with other vitamin c serumsThe packaging makes my medicine cabinet look v millennial cuteMy skin tone has really evened out lately, which I think this has helped with (but yes, you too tret)Cons:The contents of the item was smaller than I expected (finally learning to look at size by weight lol). Previously I was using the Timesless serum, so this is a big jumpRe-buy? Yes…but not consistently. Because of the price per volume, I’m not sure it can be my go to. Ordered the Vit C from Buttah Skin to try when this runs outIf you've tried out any of these products, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Same for other product switches you may have made to black-owned brands.
