[Misc] Orthorexia & skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Orthorexia is an eating disorder that is characterized by having an unsafe obsession with “clean” and healthy eating.Getting acne made me develop this disorder and I didn’t even realize it.About 5 years ago I began to break out moderately and I became obsessed with trying to clear it. I would read dozens of internet articles on ways to clear skin with diet. I cut out dairy, gluten, refined sugar, and most meat. I became obsessed with searching “will this food cause acne” before eating it. I drank a TON of water and zero juice or soda. If I ate something sugary or with dairy I would lay there and stress about the breakout I might get. Eating became such a chore. A meal for me would consist of 2 scrambled eggs, some carrots, and maybe some apple slices. I ate salads with no dressing. I would eat a handful of nuts as a meal. I was so afraid of my skin breaking out so I completely avoided anything that might contribute to it.My reasoning was that if I ate 100% clean, my skin would be perfectly clear. WRONG. My skin was probably the worst it ever was in my life during that period. I was underweight and lacking nutrients and also stressed. I had painful breakouts no matter how clean I ate.Luckily my relationship with food got better little by little. I was never diagnosed with orthorexia nor did I even know what it was. But now looking back, I can definitely say I was struggling with it. I never talked to my doctor about it, she said I was underweight but that it was normal for my size. Now, I have a passion for nutrition and cooking. I eat lots of protein, carbs, healthy fats, and lots of fruits and veggies and I don’t stress if I eat something “unhealthy.” Although there is research that diet is related to acne, my skin isn’t really affected as much by my diet as I thought it was. Skincare is much more influential in my case. I still don’t eat dairy though.Just wanted to share this because I’ve never really opened up about it before. I’m lucky that it didn’t cause any long-term damage to my body. I hope anyone struggling with this can talk to someone and get help they need.Social media, marketing and the internet can sometimes have a harmful effect on our perception of food. I always thought that gluten=bad so I avoided it. Then I learned that it’s only bad if you have an INTOLERANCE to it, which I do not.Stay nourished friends.
