[Misc] does one still need to rub or apply mechanical pressure to the skin area when using chemical exfoliants?

I would like to know how the exfoliation process works with AHAs and BHAs, as I understand it the exfoliated cells don’t actually go anywhere or dissolve unless you physically remove them or at least wipe them off.
