[Acne] Difference between hot compress and cold compress for reducing swelling of nodular/cystic acne?

I suffer with cystic acne with my main problem being large painful nodules that become inflamed under the skin.I've always though that cold compress or icing is the way to bring the inflammation down. I’ve just read and seen people suggesting a hot compress to bring the swelling down.Is anyone able to explain this to me and how it works as I've always thought that it's the cold that reduces swelling.Is a hot compress more effective?
