For anyone who is taking the antibiotic doxycycline as an acne treatment, a bit of a warning! Last night I took the pill right before I went to sleep and woke up an hour later with a terrible tightness and stabbing pain in my chest which got worse through the night. I panicked and Googled it, and it turns out that it's fairly well established that doxycycline can cause esophagus ulcers if not taken properly. My doctor told me nothing about this, so I thought I would spread the word, because it's intensely painful and there doesn't appear to be much you can do about it except wait for it to heal:(Things to can do to prevent esophagitis:1) Stay upright for 10-15 minutes after taking the medicine. That way it doesn't sit in your esophagus.2) Take it with LOTS of water. I am often guilty of dry-swallowing pills (I'm used to taking them, so it doesn't faze me anymore) but I didn't consider the consequences!After it happens, it seems like all you can do it take antacids and deal with it. It hurts like crazy, but heals up and goes away on its own!
