[Sun care] Comparison of 6 alcohol- and fragrance- free sunscreens. Part II

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Part I of alcohol- and fragrance- free sunscreens (Elta MD UV Clear, LRP Clear Skin Dry Touch, Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk Whitening, Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel).Context: I have oily, sensitive skin prone to closed comedones. My skin colour is around M.A.C. NC/NW 15 – 20.I always use a ¼ measuring tea spoon when trying a new sunscreen. Elta MD UV Shield SPF 45If you like Elta MD UV Clear, you will probably like this one even better. It does almost everything (no niacinamide) that UV Clear does, but better and it is significantly cheaper. UV Shield spreads on the skin easily, doesn’t pill (something that UV Clear always does on me) no matter what products I pair it with, and doesn’t have an unnatural shinny look. It is, in fact, one of the most oily skin friendly alcohol-free sunscreens that I’ve ever tried. Despite all the positives, it is does have one negative that prevents me from choosing it as my favourite daily sunscreen - the white cast. It is not terrible (same as UV Clear) and I can make it work with my skin colour, but it will probably be very noticeable (at least if applied ¼ tea spoon) on anyone will medium skin colour or deeper.Filters: 9.0% Zinc oxide, 7.5% OctinoxateFull ingredient list: official website Jack Black Sun Guard Oil-Free Very Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 45There is nothing good I can say about this one. It has a very strong white cast, took over half an hour to absorb at least somewhat (glad I tried it on the weekend!), it burned my not-even-that-sensitive skin, and it is very greasy. Usually, if I don’t like how a sunscreen performs on my face, I downgrade it to a hand/body sunscreen. With this one, I couldn’t even do that because it is so white and rubs off so easily that I would have marked all my clothes. I ended up returning it.Filters: Zinc Oxide 8%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 3.0%Full ingredient list: official website ROHTO Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk SPF50 PA ++++This is my favourite daily alcohol-free sunscreen. It has minimal white cast which makes it a viable option for a white range of skin tones, it never irritated my eyes when it got inside (and boy, do I have sensitive eyes!), and most importantly it is the only one I can apply ¼ tea spoon of and it will still absorb and look decent. I wish it came in a larger volume but tiny bottles seem to be all the rage in Asia, but really, it is an insignificant con that I am more than willing to deal with.Filters: Zinc Oxide, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate in unspecified amountFull ingredient list: CosDNA, NOT an official source Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 60 (Canadian version)I like using this for my neck and chest because it has almost no white cast and absorbs quickly. It is not my favourite (it can rub off white on the clothes, sometimes it gathers in the neck fold) but it still works better than many other options. Unfortunately, it didn’t work as well for my face. After applying the sunscreen and setting with translucent powder, in less than an hour my face was shiny. It also uncomfortably tingled the entire duration of it being on my face.Filters: Octocrylene 6% , Octisalate 4.5%, Oxybenzone 4.5%, Homosalate 4%, Avobenzone 2.7%Full ingredient list: Amazon page because it is not listed on the official Neutrogena website anymore :-/ (but there is a SPF version there) Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen SPF 50 Tinted Face Mineral LotionThis is an interesting one! It is a pure mineral sunscreen with a beige tint that conceals the white colour of the physical filters. The tint is STRONG! So strong, if fact, that it annihilates all my facial features and without face makeup (e.g. blush, bronzer) it looks ridiculous on me. I don’t wear face makeup on a daily basis which means this sunscreen doesn’t work as an everyday option. However, I still like this product because it works phenomenally as a foundation. It is by far the most oil, sweat, water proof foundation that I’ve ever tried. I won’t go into detail here because I already wrote a post on r/MakeupAddition. Unfortunately, because it wasn’t meant to be a foundation, it only comes in one colour (see swatches in the r/MakeupAddition post) and I don’t think Australian Gold will be expanding the shade range any time soon. However, if you do have oily skin and light skin tone and struggle with finding a foundation that stays on your face, give this a try!Filters: Titanium Dioxide 4%, Zinc Oxide 4%Full ingredient list: official website General notes:Keep in mind that an alcohol-free formula will never be as cosmetically elegant as one with ethanol among the first 5 ingredients. If you don’t care about alcohol being in your sunscreen and just want something wearable, sunscreens with alcohol will be more likely to suit your needs. It is extremely hard to test sunscreen effectiveness outside of a lab.Due to the regulation in Japan and Korea, sunscreen manufacturers are not required to publish a full ingredient list and active ingredients' percentage on the package.Due to the regulation in the USA, manufacturers are not required to disclose the PPD rating of their sunscreens.More alcohol- and fragrance- free susncreen options hereIf you have tried other alcohol-free sunscreens, please share your experience!Edit: grammar and formatting. Also I just noticed that I accidentally typed 6 instead of 5 in the title. D: Sorry, can't edit it now!
