A [Review] of 16 water-based cleansers: chronicles of a dry-skinned bitch

Beauty Tips For Body Care
One of the biggest struggles of building a skincare routine for me has been finding a cleanser suitable for my skin. Over the years I have tried a lot so I thought I would compile them all into a big review post! My biggest problem is finding a cleanser that doesn’t strip my extra-dry skin but still cleanses well, doesn’t irritate, and doesn’t leave much residue behind (a pet-peeve of mine). My skin isn’t particularly sensitive but it really hates most cleansers for some reason.Generally speaking, I always use a first cleanser in the PM before these, but I did test those that claimed to remove makeup on a full face of makeup.Skin type: Dry to extremely dry, 26F, Fitzpatrick IIClimate: UK – temperate, wet/humidCeraVe Hydrating CleanserI’m going to get the sub’s bae out of the way first, because it was my biggest disappointment (pls don’t come for me with pitchforks!). While it was hydrating, it caused a burning sensation when I applied it, turned my whole face red, and eventually caused my worst ever facial eczema flare. It always left a film behind on my face. Fragrance-free. £9.50/236ml. 1/5Cetaphil Gentle Skin CleanserNormally I don’t have much of a problem with SLS in low concentration, but this cleanser was so drying and stripping (especially for something called gentle!!). The texture and appearance were also incredibly off-putting (if you’ve used this, then you know, lol). Fragrance-free. £9.50/236ml. 1/5Dr. Sam’s Flawless CleanserI was shocked at how much I disliked this. It was OK with the first few uses, although it did leave a noticeable film on my skin. Over time my skin became drier and drier as I continued to use it. Despite the claims this can’t remove makeup well at all, even traces left from a first cleanse. Fragrance-free. £16/200ml. 1/5Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing FoamSoooo drying! I felt like my skin was going to peel off my face using this one. Even my friend with oily skin who I gave the rest of the bottle to found it to be too stripping. Fragrance-free. ~£12-13/160ml. 1/5Drunk Elephant Beste Jelly CleanserMade my skin feel very dry and tight after using but left a film at the same time (worst of both worlds) and it stung my eyes. Also not a fan of DE’s marketing or customer service. Fragrance-free. £27/150ml. 1/5Etude House SoonJung pH 6.5 Whip CleanserIt’s a little drying, but not as much as the previous cleansers. The pH is a little higher than ideal for skin but that doesn’t really bother me – it didn’t cause any irritation other than the dryness. If your skin is more on the normal-dry side then you would probably like this. Fragrance-free. ~£12-13/150ml. 2/5Eucerin Dermatoclean Cleansing MilkI loved the creamy texture of this but it wasn’t really as hydrating as I was expecting from this type of cleanser. It struggled to remove traces of makeup so I don’t feel like it cleansed thoroughly enough, even for a gentle cleanser. It also left a little more residue than I was comfortable with. Fragrance-free. £10.50/200ml. 2.5/5Stratia Velvet Cleansing MilkOne of the few milk cleansers I’ve tried that actually rinses clean! I enjoyed using this cleanser due to the plush texture and how soft my skin was afterwards. It doesn’t foam at all but it has plenty of slip to massage. Sadly, something in this irritated my skin and I got rashes of irritation across my cheekbones as I continued to use it. Fragrance-free. US$15/120ml (+ US$10 intl shipping). 3/5Oskia Renaissance Cleansing GelThis is more of a gel-balm or a gel-oil than a true ‘gel’ cleanser (though it doesn’t remove makeup well enough to function as a first cleanser IMO). It’s pink in colour and it smells like roses and Turkish Delight, which I must admit is one of my favourite skincare scents. Unfortunately this gets used up way too quickly for the price and it leaves a lot of residue, even when removed with a flannel. £28/100ml. 3/5Glossier Milky Jelly CleanserI like the rose scent and the texture, but this was a bit too drying for my skin type. It could remove makeup traces but wasn’t thorough enough to remove a full face despite the claims. People with skin closer to normal/combination will probably appreciate this more. Fragrance-free. £15/177ml. 3/5REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing MilkGentle, non-irritating, and hydrating – a great start! This claims to remove a full face of makeup, and it does, except for some stubborn mascara traces. There’s only a little residue left behind, which wouldn’t bother me so much if the smell didn’t make me feel nauseous. The combination of essential oils in this just turns my stomach for some reason. Really not a fan of the green-washing this brand does either. £16/150ml. 3.5/5Fresh Soy CleanserThis cleanser smells like a weird combination of cucumber and rosewater (if you’re thinking those two scents don’t really mesh well together... you’d be right). Despite the scent, I enjoyed using this cleanser thanks to the nice jelly texture and slight lather. Does not remove makeup well at all, especially around the eyes. I found it to be slightly hydrating when I used it in summer, but not quite hydrating enough in winter. One of the better gel cleansers I’ve tried. Fragrance-free. £30/150ml. 3.5/5Pai Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating CleanserProbably the most hydrating cleanser I’ve ever tried! This is a cleanser for my fellow lizard skinned people. There’s a distinct oily residue that gets left behind though, and it also smells kind of lavender-y (I hate the smell of lavender). You’ll probably still need a first cleanser if you wear makeup, unless it’s minimal. Another brand that's a bit too fond of green-washing for my liking. £30/100ml. 3.5/5Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser LotionThis was nice and hydrating, but it left a bit too much residue for my liking. I also found it disappeared into the skin like a moisturiser rather than remaining on the surface to massage the cleanser around. If I had a compromised skin barrier this would be my pick because it is truly non-irritating, but for daily use it’s not a favourite. Fragrance-free. £11.50/200ml. 4/5Kate Somerville Goat Milk CleanserThis is a thick cream texture that lathers slightly and rinses clean. It’s very soothing and calming and leaves skin soft and hydrated. However, a tube doesn’t last very long and the vanilla-honey scent can sometimes be a bit sickly. £32/120ml. 4/5Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing CleanserI was pleasantly surprised by this cleanser. Even though it lathers a little, it isn’t at all drying – even when my skin is at its driest, it’s still soft after using. I was sceptical of the enzymes working in a cleanser format, but my face is smoother, brighter, and less flaky with consistent use. I like the scent, but it is really strong (you can even smell it outside of the bottle). My current favourite cleanser. £34/200ml. 4.5/5
