[Misc] Why do people believe that "if it hurts, it works"?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I see a lot of posts about all those weird masks and treatment made of baking soda, or lemon juice, or cinnamon and it got me thinking - how's that a lot of people believe burning or redness is a "good sign"?Logically we, as humans, are not exactly keen on feeling pain and if our skin shows some symptoms of irritation, we cease to use the product. Easy example would be waxing creams, if they leave you red and itchy you go "welp, I have an allergic reaction." How come that someone puts cinnamon with lemon juice on their face, gets badly irritated, and thinks "wow yes, this is working"?Where does this misconception come from? Who started the "if it hurts, it works" trend? Does it have some historical roots?
