[Review] Abnomaly - Petrowhat? Product by Deciem

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So on my recent re-stock of TO products I noticed these were out. I ordered the petrowhat? milk which is 'coconut milk'. I really wasn't expecting much to be honest because I've never found a good chapstick, lip balm, etc that can help my big ol lippies. I've tried everything and it works then half way through the day my lips get dry. (Pretty sure it's the air quality in my work place, but I can't be sure.)ANYWAY on to the review! The tube itself is really cute, guys. I am a sucker for packaging. When I bought it I thought it was just for the lips, but it is a lip and skin ointment. Alright..Smell: Just like coconut milk. If you like the scent of coconut, this stuff is glorious. I love it. Maybe too much. I know some people are not a fan of coconut so beware and order another 'flavor' if that's the case because it does come on strong enough.Texture: Thick, very easy to spread and use too much. A little goes a very, very long way.Pros: My lips love this stuff. I haven't had smoother lips in a long, long time. I also have really dry skin on my hands (cuticle area) and my elbows from leaning on them. In one day, I am not kidding, this stuff made a 75% difference on my skin itself. In two days nothing was crusty, dry, flakey, etc.Cons: The usage. I can see going through a tube of this very quickly because you look at the product and it is thick, but once you use an amount you constantly are realizing you have used way too much and I end up applying to other areas. I mean.. I even ate some the other day because I had used too much..

[Misc] My Newbie Guide to Melasma

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I started following this sub when I realized I had a melasma mustache and was desperate for it to go away. Thanks to the great advice here, I'm now nearly melasma free! My cousin was dealing with a melasma mustache too, so I wrote up what I've learned along the way, and thought others might find it useful too. This is what worked for me, but please correct any information I might have gotten wrong. I've included some links to information and products, though I'm sure there are better sources out there, so please take them with a grain of salt. A big thanks to everyone's amazing insight in this sub. Cheers!Always Wear SunscreenSo you wake up one morning, and discover you are rocking a Tom Selleck. You panic, grab the tweezers, and maybe even a razor, but that dark little caterpillar just keeps creeping along your upper lip. You grab some mustache bleach at the drugstore and nearly give yourself a chemical burn, but the little dark turd hasn’t budged. You realize it’s not actually hair that’s darkening your pie hole’s doorway, it’s a discoloration of your skin! Yay! You don’t have bearded lady syndrome, you have melasma! So what now?1. SUNSCREEN ALL DAY ERR DAYMelasma gets a lot worse in the sun. You have to double down, nay, triple down on sun protection. WEAR SUNSCREEN, and not just in your makeup. Reapply when you’re in the sun for more than a couple of hours. Also, invest in a couple cute hats to wear when you know you’ll be outdoors. There are organic (chemical) and inorganic (physical) sunscreens. Both work, and both have advantages and disadvantages. This super detailed page talks about the differences and how they work in a lot of detail if you’re so inclined. TLDR of the link above: Organic/chemical sunscreens are generally lighter weight, easier to apply, and likely won’t give your face as much of a white tint. They do absorb into your skin versus sit on top though, so they have a higher chance of causing irritation. Personally, I prefer these because I’m super pale and don’t want to look more like Edward Scissorhands sister than I already do. Inorganic/physical sunscreens can be better for sensitive skin (particularly Zinc oxide), and generally don’t contain chemicals (i.e. oxybenzone) that destroy coral reefs; however, they can be harder to apply, give you a white cast, and may rub off more easily thus have to be applied more frequently.Sunscreen recommendations:OrganicLa Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light SPF 60 (I use this one)Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50*I haven’t yet tried this, as it’s not sold in the US, but it’s apparently the holy grail of sunscreensInorganicLa Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50CeraVe Sunscreen Face Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 502. HYDROQUINONEThis is considered the go-to skin lightener. Michael Jackson was a big fan, seriously no joke. There is some controversy about this ingredient, but desperate mustaches call for desperate measures. It is in over-the-counter products at a 2% concentration, but your doctor can prescribe you a 4% concentration. A big concern is that it can cause your skin to darken even more (called Ochronosis), although this has typically been observed in people with darker skin pigmentation. Also, chances are it will work and then you won’t have to keep using it. It’s recommended to take a break from using it after 4 months. Note: apply to your whole face and blend into your neck region. If you spot treat, you could get a “halo” effect. Some information about HydroquinoneHydroquinone recommendation:Paula’s Choice RESIST Triple-Action Dark Spot Eraser 7% AHA Lotion (2% Hydroquinone)Think about using hydroquinone with AHA because this will cause more cell turn over and get rid of the darker areas faster. Go easy with this product, and either use this or a retinoid, not both. Spot test first, and then build up use to every 3-4 days. YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN IF YOU USE THIS PRODUCT.3. RETINOIDRetinoids are amazing. They cure acne and wrinkles. If you’re not using a form of it in your routine, you are missing out. They promote skin cell turnover and increase collagen production. They help reduce the effects of sun damage and help smooth your skin texture. 10/10 would recommend. Downsides are they can be super drying and, once again, YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN because your skin will become hyper photosensitive. You won’t tan, you’ll just burn. Retinoids come in different strengths, with Retinol being sold over the counter and Adapalene (Differin) and Tretinoin (Retin-A) being prescription only in the U.S. The higher the strength, the more effective it is, but only use the highest strength your skin can tolerate. Using a strength that’s too high isn’t worth the drying/irritation effects. Once again, spot check, and build up your use of this product if you choose it.TretinoinRetin-A (prescribed by a doctor)RetinolNeutrogena Rapid Tone Repair line (Dark Spot Corrector is a good place to start)4. Other stuff that’s helped me bash my ‘stache in a flashVitamin CThis stuff does wonders to brighten up your skin and help fade dark spots. Also really helps with keeping your skin moisturized. Be aware, using it with products that contain Niacinamide will cancel its effects. Also note that Vitamin C is often not in a stable form and will start to oxidize. Don’t use if it starts to turn orange or amber. The Clinique version has about a 10 day shelf life (they say 7, it only started to oxidize after day 10 for me). The Ordinary version is more stabilized, but you don’t get the immediate results you do with the Clinique product.Clinique Vitamin C Fresh PressedVitamin C Suspension 23%+ HA Spheres 2%Hyaluronic AcidThis is my go-to for keeping my skin soft and moisturized. It’s a very common ingredient in a lot of products, but keep it in mind if you find your skin starts drying out.Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water GelCeraVe Moisturizing CreamSo melasma really, really sucked for me. It was a huge blow to my self esteem, and I feel a lot better now that it's significantly faded. Please don't think that I'm saying your melasma is bad or even noticeable, cuz it's not! I just know it really brought me down. It's funny to joke about now, but it just really, really sucked. I did a some research to make it better though, and it worked! I'd love it if some of the hours I spent searching for a treatment can help you too. And if it still seems like nothing works,Just remember, always WEAR SUNSCREEN

[misc] expected better from this sub

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Sorry for the rant, but man, this sub is getting to be annoying. There was a B&A posted today where OP said she finally felt comfortable in her own skin and looked/felt a million times better. But since her routine wasn't "wash with cerave, moisturize with some tub lotion, etc." y'all freaked the f out and she got down-voted like crazy. She ended up deleting her picture. When will this sub understand that the products YOU'RE using will NOT work for everyone! Everyone's skin and body is completely different and if someone gets to clearer skin in a different way than you did, then gosh dammit CELEBRATE THEM! I totally understand wanting to help someone out and give advice, but there's a difference between criticism and constructive criticism.I just think it's extremely sad that OP was trying to come on here and show us that she's finally happy with her progress and she got a negative response. I've seen this happen with other posts and it's just disappointing - honestly it's a huge reason as to why I won't post my personal B&A. I know this sub is filled with wonderful and helpful people, but seeing this happen is frustrating. Not everyone's progress is the same, nor should it be.

I went to the store quick to purchase CeraVe's moisturizer that I've seen people rave about, but then I realized it doesn't have a safety seal. Anyone and anything could be in that big tub of potentially life saving moisture. I stood in the aisle for five minutes, staring down at this tub in my hands, my skin parched as fuck, debating if the potential germs were worth the hydration my face is screaming for.Does this not bother anyone else? How do you guys buy these products and not instantly worry about the fingers that could have been in it? Plz help.

[B&A] How I managed to get rid of my incredibly stubborn acne! (Male/22)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Intro: I normally wouldn't make posts like these but I personally know how shitty it feels waking up everyday dreading looking in the mirror because you're afraid of what zits popped up overnight. I feel like my acne really hindered my college experience, as hanging out my friends revolved around whether or not my skin was clear. Even though my acne was never severe, the mental toll it took on me was drastic. I tried just about everything in effort to clear up my skin, without luck. I tried making changes to my diet by going gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free. I tried many different skin products, took numerous trips to the dermatologist, and lost countless hours of sleep researching acne and its causes. I honestly felt hopeless trying to find the root cause of my acne.Skin History: I had moderate acne starting in middle school, mostly in the "T" area. After starting prescription medication, my skin mostly cleared up by the time I was in high school. It stayed relatively clear until it made a resurgence my sophomore year of college. I started using a facial cleanser and an OTC benzyl peroxide cream and I got pretty good results after a few months. I still got a few zits here and there but they were completely manageable. Then in the summer before my senior year, my acne started getting pretty bad on my cheeks and around the chin/jaw. I started getting cysts and just generally deeper zits that took longer to come to a head and heal in general. I decided to see dermatologist that summer and he prescribed me clindamycin and benzyl peroxide. I used these religiously twice daily for months. Over a few months I noticed the cysts that appeared on my cheeks usually every other week started to subside. I would still get them, but they would be much smaller and come to a head much quicker. Even though it took probably over 5 months to see changes, I was still confident in the progress.Despite the progress I was seeing on the main problem area that was my cheeks, the acne on my chin started to worse. I was now starting to get cysts pretty regularly just below the corners of my mouth and numerous other whiteheads would appear with them mostly on the jaw and lower chin. I would like to note that this flare up started during the lacrosse season, which meant I was wearing a chin pad 3 hours daily and sweating pretty profusely in the AZ sun. I started by buying a chin pad cover and washing it daily before practice. After not seeing much of a difference I started washing my face directly before and after practice with Cetaphil wipes and my doctor prescribed me Clindamycin wipes to use as well. None of this made much of a difference which lead to a few-month-long experimenting phase where I changed my skin routine and diet regularly. Again, I saw little to no improvement with everything I tried.I know these aren't the greatest pictures in the world but I don't really have many pictures of me when my face was especially bad for obvious reasons.https://imgur.com/a/5Ue9oB0https://imgur.com/a/RMEwFDChttps://imgur.com/a/4HKpyFoFinding the Problem: On my last visit to my dermatologist shortly before graduation, I told my dermatologist about how the acne on my cheeks had cleared up thanks to the prescription medications, but also about how the acne on my chin seemed to be getting worse. He threw out some scientific term for the type of acne I was getting on the chin and simply told me that it was caused by shaving. I have no idea why he had never said anything previously in the few visits I had over the past few months, but regardless I was ecstatic that there was still hope. I wasn't sold on the idea that it was because of shaving since I only use an electric trimmer and never actually shave my face. Also the acne flair ups never really seemed to line up with when I trimmed my facial hair. After reading up on the Acne.org skin care routine and how important it is to be careful with your skin, I came to the realization that my acne was not caused necessarily by shaving, but by pressure on my skin. This made a lot of sense to me looking back on the past few months and I decided that I would start treating my face very delicately. And what do you know, my acne is better than it has been in years and I couldn't be happier about it! I would like to quickly note that my acne did not just magically disappear because I started being gentle with my skin, but also because of the medication I was prescribed by my dermatologist.Routine:AM:- Wash hands thoroughly, wet face, 2 pumps of Cetaphil facial cleanser, massage through hands for 10 seconds, gently apply to face with fingertips and cleanse for about 15 seconds- Use a pea size amount of prescription Benzyl Peroxide 10%, massage through hands, apply to face and cleanse for about 15 seconds, splash face with water (Don't touch your face! Just splash it with water)- Wait until face is dry (10 min), wash hands, apply a pea sized amount of prescription Clindmayicn lotion to face in a thin layer- Wait another 10 min, wash hands, apply Cerave suncscreen/moisturizer (30 spf)PM:- Same as AM, just use Cerave moisturizer without the sunscreenImportant things to remember:- Never touch your face unless your washing it! Even then only use your fingertips and be VERY gentle- Change your pillow case about every 3-4 days. (I sleep on my side, which is something I am trying to change so that I don't apply pressure to my face while I'm sleeping)- Be really gentle when trimming, be careful not to go over the same spot multiple times- Wash your hands before touching your face. Your cleanser won't kill the bacteria on your hands, you have to wash them first!!- I personally think it's unrealistic to expect your skin to be perfect. I still get zits but they're very small and heal quickly. My routine and habits are not perfect but I continue to improve on them everyday! Here's what it looks like now!https://imgur.com/a/iRNPK9Hhttps://imgur.com/a/tHinO8F

[Acne] Diaper cream and calamine lotion saved my life

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just posted here yesterday freaking out about how I have a ginormous cystic pimple that I tried popping twice and only made it more of a mess. I have a lot planned this weekend so I started obsessing over it and looking up whatever I could do to solve it. There has been many times where I bailed on my friends and stayed home all weekend missing out on fun things because of my acne. I wish I didn’t care but I do.Well I came across zinc oxide or diaper cream (basically zinc oxide) and calamine lotion as seriously helping people out with cystic pimples. I put calamine lotion on it for a few hours and noticed a huge difference and then switched to diaper cream and fell asleep. Just woke up and it’s a miracle how much better it looks.I’m telling you this thing was a mess. One of the biggest pimples I’ve ever had. A scabby big mess from squeezing it (shouldn’t have done that I know) I know everyone has pimples and I shouldn’t care but this thing would’ve made me stay home all weekend if it continued to look this bad.Diaper cream and calamine lotion are my new holy grail. Obviously not everyone has the same skin type so it won’t work for everyone but I thought I could help a few people out by posting this.

[Sun care] My The Ordinary sunscreen order just arrived!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So yes it just came in the post. Was so much quicker than I expected!I have only tried it on my hand but I love it on there, hopefully it is just as nice on my face!First thing I noticed was that it has a very very slight tint which I wasn't expecting. I would describe the texture as a thick lotion. Kind of runny and fluid, but with a bit of thickness to it. Definately not a thick cream. At first it felt quite sticky and shiny on my hand but after about a minute that has gone away and it has almost disappeared. There is a very very slight tacky feeling, like really slight, but definately no grease.I know this is only my hand and our faces are completely different so I will have to wait and see tomorrow morning for that!Anybody elses arrived yet?

[Acne] I'm an amateur at dealing with pimples but Tea Tree Oil really made a difference

Beauty Tips For Body Care
When instead of study for my final exam, I spent well over 2 hours reading through as many pimple threads on Google. TTO is a popular remedy, so I'm adding my story for the next person who's also panicking and looking for a quick fix. In summary, it hasn't been a day and most of the redness is gone, leaving me with a pimple that I can cover with light makeup. For reference, my pimple looked almost exactly like:https://imgur.com/a/vniQqPcI would have left it alone if it weren't for the fact that it hurts like an impaled rock and that I had a reunion coming up.Things I tried were Raw Honey, Bentonite Clay, and Cortate Cream. I even got desperate and used Hydrogen Peroxide hoping that it would make a difference... yup nothing. All I wanted was a less inflamed pimple- I wasn't asking for it to be gone. Again, I'm an amateur, so maybe all these remedies just collided and cancelled each other out.The next day, I bought 100% Holista TTO and Nexcare Hydrocolloid bandaids. I watered down a Q-tip and tilted the TTO bottle over it to get one drop, then I proceeded to apply the Q-tip with TTO down onto my pimple. It started stinging so I immediate added more water to the spot and patted it dry with a clean Q-tip. It felt like nothing but the skin on my pimple started drying up. I did this just once. I put on a Hydrocolloid bandaid even though I knew nothing was going to drain since my pimple didn't even have an opening. It does however keep some moisture in, and Vaseline would have worked too. I would definitely recommend TTO for people who haven't tried it yet.

[acne] Skin cleared up dramatically whilst living overseas, now that I'm back home it's gotten worse

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi Guys, so just for context, I've had t-zone hormonal acne (combination oily and dry) for the past 5 years. I lived in America (Northern California) for 5 months, and I couldn't believe how well my skin was clearing up. However, for the 5 months I was consistently:- Eating more fast foods, lollies, chocolate at least 1-3 times a week (it was definitely ALOT more than in Australia)- Not washing my pillowcase often (gross I know)- Sleeping late every night around 1-4am / getting minimal sleep some days- Going out every weekend and not washing my makeup before I went to bed sometimes- Barely maintaining a skin care routine and didn't always use my Epiduo acne cream- Wore makeup most of the week, (light makeup).I was expecting my skin to break out like crazy to reflect the unhealthier lifestyle compared to my Australian (home) lifestyle I had. However, it was so clear and smooth that even my friends noticed in photos. For the first time my skin felt smooth and my makeup applied amazingly. However, since I've been back home, I've been eating healthy, following a skin care routine, sleeping regular hours, and my skin is back to how it was before- filled with t-zone acne and it has recently gotten worse, and I have more chin acne.I'm wondering why this happened, has anyone experienced this?

I’m considering adding moisturizer and sunscreen to that list so I can apply those as well before I head home, am I missing anything?Do you have a routine or any skincare products that you keep at work to make sure your skin is in tip-top shape even after a long day of adulting?

Hi guys, I posted a photo on here about a month ago about not skin picking but forgot to “hide” my photo on imgur so got ripped apart for looking like James William Bottomtooth the third, had a bit of a mental breakdown and deleted my reddit. Soooo.. I came back with a more appropriate username and learned how to use imgur.Photo on the left taken 31/03/2018 and photo on the right taken today. My previous post sort of highlighted how much damage I had self inflicted on my self from picking my skin and squeezing closed comedones, exacerbating my acne and turning it into an inflamed infected mess. Now we on the mend - slowly but surely. [EMPTY] [REVIEW] CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I purchased a bottle of this towards the end of last year when it was starting to turn to winter. I had a few cleansers I was trying out at the time, and all of them were drying out my skin. I decided to try this after seeing several people recommend it. My skin is normal/can get oily. I cannot say exactly how long this bottle lasted, as I moved from my parents' home and left it there for when I visit, and there is ~1 use left in it now. I would say this should last at least 3 months.FeelThis feels amazing on my skin. It is like a lotion, but not thick enough to cling to the skin to make it hard to rinse off. It does not lather or foam up, which I personally love. The texture feels so comforting on my face. I use an oil cleanser before this without issue.ResultsThis cleanser does not leave my skin feeling dry or tight. I think this has also helped with acne, as my skin is now more hydrated.PackagingThis comes as a pump bottle that can be clicked open or closed. It's great for traveling. The bottle is sturdy but not too clunky or burdensome.IngredientsThis cleanser includes 3 ceramides, cholesterol, hyaluronic acid, and a few fatty alcohols. I love the ingredients list. It also includes parabens, but their inclusion does not bother me. They are at the end of the ingredients list, so present in small concentrations.Repurchase?Absolutely! I have already purchased 2 bottles since I started using this cleanser. I just purchased the value size bottle yesterday. As long as they keep making this, I will keep purchasing it.

[Skin Concerns]/[Routine Help] So, I’ve been to the derm...perioral dermatitis?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I saw a dermatologist today and he basically instantly told me that I wasn’t experiencing acne but perioral dermatitis. He told me to stop using every product I am currently using and prescribed me two things and recommended me a sunscreen.Shame on me because I am now of course having so many questions that I forgot to ask him, so I thought I would come here and ask you lovely people for help! I will include pictures of my skin and the products, tell me if you need me to translate anything :)First off, here’s what I told the doctor: I have been having skin issues since I’ve been like 14 (am now 24, female), and even when taking a pill with antiandrogens I was still experiencing skin issues, basically the same as I am having now, the bumps just got a little more hurtful and bigger. I stopped taking the pill in February 2017, and now just started another pill, also with antiandrogens, two days ago.https://i.redd.it/fpowf2q8c4611.jpgMy routine:I was actually quite pleased with my routine in the past few weeks because I felt like I was finally moisturized and my skin started to look a little healthier and better overall, the “acne” still persisted though.AM:Cerave Hydrating CleanserSometimes Thayers Witch Hazel TonerSometimes Cerave Moisturizing CremeA Garnier Sunscreen (I know, probably not the best, but it didn’t break me out or at least so I thought)PM:Oil CleansingCerave Foaming CleanserThayers Witch HazelCerave Moisturizing CremeSo, basically, he told me to stop using all of that and prescribed me two things: first, something that he called a “mask” that I am supposed to apply in the evening over night containing chloramphenicol, ammoniumbituminosulfonate and zinc oxide (as far as I can tell, the first one is an antibiotic?); second, he prescribed an emulsion with 1% metronidazole , which also is an antibiotic I think? I’m supposed to use the emulsion in the morning and the evening, but not in the morning in case I am spending a long time in the sun. So, I guess I am supposed to use this like a “moisturizer”, before I apply the “mask” or the sunscreen? The \"mask\"The \"creme\"SunscreenHe also recommended me a sunscreen, it’s the Eucerin photoaging control CC face sun creme 50+. He said it’s a gel which would be good for my skin because it means no oil?I already read through a few perioral dermatitis threads on here and will continue to do so, but I have a few questions for anyone who has dealt with it as well or who has a few good tips in general! He told me to take off the mask in the morning with baby oil, which I currently don’t have at home and kinda sounds counterproductive? Do you have any ideas what I could use to get it off? Would the Cerave Moisturizing Cleanser be okay?I want nothing more than to have healthy skin and am of course willing to do what the doctor tells me, but I am still scared about how it’s going to be – if my skin gets really dry because I am not moisturizing anymore, will I just have to deal with it? Will it get better? If the perioral dermatitis is gone, am I then “healed” for good as long as I don’t start using any products? Should I actually not use anything but sunscreen, forever? In case you had/have perioral dermatitis, what did/didn’t work for you?Sorry if this was a bit rambly! And please excuse any mistakes :)

[Skin Concerns] I fell asleep while wearing a tea tree mask and now everything hurts

Beauty Tips For Body Care
A week ago I fell asleep with a tea tree oil mask on. It was supposed to stay on my skin for 15 minutes but because I slept it was on for 2 hours. My skin burnt really bad afterwards so I put a moisturizing mask on and it seems to help but now everytime I put something on my skin it turns red and burns. What can I do to help my skin recover? I was thinking about only coconut oil and water but it's summer and I don't want to miss out on suncream to long.

[Sun Care] I survived a 14+ mile walk without sun burn because of SCA...my colleagues did not do as well.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Yesterday I went on what was meant to be a 14 or so mile charity walk with 9 work colleagues but ended up being a 16 mile walk. Before I even left the house to meet everyone for breakfast, I slathered myself in SPF50. After breakfast, three hours after I initially applied my sunscreen (not all of which were outside), I reapplied. My colleagues laughed at me. The sun was barely up, they said. I was applying so much, they said. Every two hours, I reapplied. Around noon, they started joining me because ears and the backs of necks were turning pink. By the end of the walk, just about everyone else had lovely shades of pink on the back of their calves, necks, and shoulders, but not me!Thank you, SCA, for instilling the sense to apply sunscreen like it was the elixir of youth. I am only half a shade darker than I was yesterday and would likely be pink if if weren't for you lot.PS-On the off chance that anyone wants to donate to St Basils and help homeless teenagers, send me a private message. I'd rather not post the link here, but it is a good charity and I'd love if my group made our goal! No worries if you don't feel compelled to donate though, I'm really just happy that I'm not burnt.

[Acne] Help my sister with Down Syndrome

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My sister is 14 and will be entering high school this fall. Since she'll be going to a new school with little to no friends, my mom is worried about her being bullied, whether it's for her disability, her size, or her looks. She has been having problems with acne recently and I thought that I might try to find something that would help ease my mom's concerns. But I don't really know anything about skincare myself so hopefully someone here can help.My sister has oily skin and the acne is predominantly on her forehead but she has some around her mouth/cheeks. To my knowledge, she doesn't really have a skincare routine except using a washcloth and soap to clean her face. Now the real struggle comes in with her disability. She can have some odd reactions to certain textures and generally doesn't like putting on masks or anything covering the face (face painting included). I think something like a spot treatment would be best but my mom is willing to work with my sister to help her get over her hatred of masks. Any suggestions at all would be helpful. Thank you!

[routine help] skincare addicts living the broke life, what are your cheap af holy grails?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Let’s get down to it - my hours got cut at work in a major way. That means a lot of my budget - including skincare - has to just fall by the wayside while I’m figuring things out financially. That being said, I’m an esthetician student, so it’s actually pretty important for school and future work that my skin doesn’t go completely to hell. Plus, I really don’t want to add the extra stress on top of everything! My routine for my dehydrated, CC-prone skin is heavily in the works because (a) to be able to market myself as a future esthetician, good skin is actually kind of a priority and (b) I was finally making enough money to invest a little more in good skincare - sadly it looks like that second part just wasn’t meant to last :( I figured there are probably lots of us in a similar situation, so let’s start a thread of the most affordable parts of our routines!I’ll start - I’ve been using olive oil for OCM/as a makeup remover! The Walmart brand is only like $4-5 iirc and a bottle lasts forever since it takes so little at one time. I also feel like it helps with moisturizing and hydration, but that might just be placebo effect or due to a different product. I know it’s a skincare sin, but I’ve been using a fair amount of new products and haven’t been super consistent - a lot of my routine has been samples of the dermalogica products I use for facials at school cue face palm. Hey, at least they’re free for me, and it does technically help me decide what to use/suggest on others if I’ve tried it myself.Anyway, that’s enough rambling for now - I want to know your best ballin-on-a-budget skincare tricks!

[Research] Why Vitamin D is essential

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Prompted by the recent post over in /r/Asianbeauty, please have your Vitamin D levels checked out!I know this sub, it's helped me with my own skin issues. But the perpetual fear of sunlight that gets spread around and encouraged is not just cute or annoying, but can have severe health consequences. Humans have needed sunlight since forever and our current way of live, combined with the sun fear I see here, can harm us all. We need sunlight and the Vitamin D our skin produces, but hiding indoors forever is really bad for our physical and mental well-being.Of course I would never say these things without proof, so here you go:Most people are actually Vitamin D deficient, as seen in this study done on US participants. What's very interesting is that Black and Hispanic people are the most affected.Mounting evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency could be linked to several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its correlates to test the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency was common in the US population, especially in certain minority groups. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2006 data were analyzed for vitamin D levels in adult participants (N = 4495). Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations ≤20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L). The overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency was 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%). Vitamin D deficiency was significantly more common among those who had no college education, were obese, with a poor health status, hypertension, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, or not consuming milk daily (all P < .001). Multivariate analyses showed that being from a non-white race, not college educated, obese, having low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, poor health, and no daily milk consumption were all significantly, independently associated with vitamin D deficiency (all P < .05). In summary, vitamin D deficiency was common in the US population, especially among blacks and Hispanics. Given that vitamin D deficiency is linked to some of the important risk factors of leading causes of death in the United States, it is important that health professionals are aware of this connection and offer dietary and other intervention strategies to correct vitamin D deficiency, especially in minority groups. - Abstract as sourced from hereAnd here is a study done on a world-wide scale:RESULTS: The mean 25(OH)D level was 54 nmol/l (95% CI: 52-57 nmol/l). Women had borderline significantly higher 25(OH)D levels than men, and Caucasians had higher levels than non-Caucasians. 25(OH)D levels were higher in subjects aged >15 years than in younger subjects. Unadjusted there was no significant decrease in 25(OH)D with latitude (slope of curve -0.03 +/- 0.12 nmol/l per degree latitude north or south of equator, p = 0.8). There was a significant decline with latitude for Caucasians (-0.69 +/- 0.30 nmol/l per degree, p = 0.02), but not for non-Caucasians (0.03 +/- 0.39 nmol/l per degree, p = 0.14). After adjustment for age, gender, and ethnicity, no overall correlation was present between 25(OH)D and latitude (-0.29 +/- 0.24 nmol/l per degree, p = 0.23).CONCLUSION:There was no overall influence of latitude on 25(OH)D. However, in separate analyses 25(OH)D decreased with latitude in Caucasians but not in non-Caucasians. A widespread global vitamin D insufficiency was present compared with proposed threshold levels. - SourceConsequences of Vitamin D deficiency: I'm not posting this to make anyone go and get a sunburn, but I feel like there isn't enough conversation about the consequences of being Vitamin D deficient. As seen in this study, the consequences can go right to the bone and, as we get older, can cause bone structure impairment because of mineral metabolism impairment:25(OH)D concentrations were defined at which rise parathormone levels, increases bone conversion, impairs bone mineralization and develops osteomalacia. Based on these results a deficiency of vitamin D was defined. Patients with chronic renal disease experience development of serious bone impairments described as renal osteodystrophy. These disorders are caused by secondary hyperparathyroidism which develops as a result of mineral metabolism impairment, especially of hypocalemia, 25(OH)D deficiency, and insufficient synthesis of 1,25(OH)2D. Presently published guidelines K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease: Evaluation, Classification and Stratification define processes of vitamin D supplementation, particularly 1,25(OH)2D according to a degree of renal disease. Early prevention and treatment of hypovitaminosis D is a treatment goal in order to reduce or stop development of secondary hyperparathyroidism with its consequences for bone metabolism. - SourceAnother interesting study shows that Vitamin D supplements and synthesis on the skin can be used as treatment for payment psoriasis:Vitamin D is a hormone, not a vitamin. The skin is responsible for producing vitamin D. During exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation penetrates into the epidermis and photolyzes provitamin D3 to previtamin D3. Previtamin D3 can either isomerize to vitamin D3 or be photolyzed to lymisterol and tachysterol. Vitamin D is also sensitive to sunlight and is photolyzed to 5,6-transvitamin D3, suprasterol I, and suprasterol II. In Boston, solar irradiation only produces previtamin D3 in the skin between the months of March and October. Aging, sunscreens, and melanin all diminish the capacity of the skin to produce previtamin D3. Once formed, vitamin D3 enters the circulation and is sequentially metabolized to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-[OH]2-D3). The epidermis possesses receptors for 1,25-(OH)2-D3. 1,25-(OH)2-D3 inhibits the proliferation of cultured keratinocytes and induces them to terminally differentiate. The topical or oral administration of 1,25-(OH)2-D3 has proved to be effective for the treatment of psoriasis. Therefore, the skin is the site for the synthesis of vitamin D and a target tissue for its active metabolite. The successful use of 1,25-(OH)2-D3 for the treatment of psoriasis heralds a new approach for the treatment of this enigmatic disorder. - SourceIn this study, it was proven that only 60% of ingested Vitamin D supplements were actually converted to the relevant binding protein, as opposed to 100% of sun gained Vitamin D:When vitamin D3 is ingested from the diet or supplement it gets incorporated into chylomicrons which are transported into the lymphatic system and then into the venous system were approximately 60% of the vitamin D3 is bound to the vitamin D binding protein and 40% is rapidly cleared in the lipoprotein bound fraction. - SourceSunscreenFrom the same study as above, starting from page 8, there's also information about UVB absorption related to sunscreen (I know this sub, I see all of you):Sunscreens were designed to absorb solar UVB radiation. A sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 absorbs approximately 95–98% of solar UVB radiation. Therefore the topical application of a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 reduces the capacity of the skin to produce vitamin D3 by the same amount i.e., 95–98%. This was confirmed with the report that the application of sunscreen with a SPF of only 8 dramatically reduced the blood level of vitamin D3 after exposure to simulated sunlight in a tanning bed. Farmers in the Midwest who had a history of non-melanoma skin cancer and who wore a sunscreen all the time before going outdoors for more than a year demonstrated that at the end of the summer their blood levels were significantly lower (most were vitamin D deficient) than the levels of the control group. - SourceAlso, can we please talk about farmers being Vitamin D deficient? As in, people who spend their entire day outside. Not like most of us who barely spend an hour or so in sunlight with sunscreen. If they manage to get deficient, it's very likely we all already have it as well.GlassGlass absorbs all UVB rays that pass through it:RESULTS: Laminated glass totally blocked UVA radiation, while smooth ordinary glass transmitted the highest dose (74.3%). Greater thicknesses of glass implied less radiation transmitted, but without a significant difference. Green glass totally blocked UVA radiation, while blue glass transmitted the highest dose of radiation (56.8%). The presence of a sunlight control film totally blocked UVA radiation. All glasses totally blocked UVB radiation.CONCLUSION: The main characteristics of glass that make it a photoprotective agent are its type (especially laminated glass) and color (especially green), which give rise to good performance by this material as a barrier against the transmission of radiation. - SourceAs referenced in all the studies linked, Vitamin D can only be produced with UVB light:During exposure to sunlight solar radiation with wavelengths of 290–315 nm penetrate into the skin and are absorbed by proteins, DNA and RNA as well as 7-dehydrocholesterol.1,2 Most of this UVB radiation is absorbed in the epidermis and as a result when exposed to sunlight most of the vitamin D3 that is produced in the skin is made in the living cells in the epidermis. This is the reason why after exposure to sunlight vitamin D3 remains in the skin even when the skin is washed with soap and water immediately after the exposure to sunlight. - SourceSitting in front of a window still lets in UVA which is what most people worry about. But the important one, UVB, gets completely blocked out, meaning no Vitamin D gets produced in our bodies. We can spend our life sitting next to a window and be Vitamin D deficient, just some food for thought. For those short on time, the summary in this study (same study linked again for the lazy) starts on page 30 and I'd encourage everyone who's worried about their sun exposure to read it. The language is kept simple but it hits all the main points. Not posting here because it's a long summary.Must read for those with more time: This study is what I like to call a summary study. It's an excellent source of all kinds of information about Vitamin D, why deficiencies happen, the consequences of being deficient and more importantly (from page 6 onwards), it describes the clinical benefits of Vitamin D.These include reduced risks for: cancer (dat sweet sweet irony), heart disease, hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression, cognitive impairment and so on.Another study which hits all those points is this one here. It covers the same topics and comes to similar conclusions as what I've already mentioned, but the more sources the better (the scientist in me is pleased now).Vitamin D can no longer be thought of as a nutrient necessary for the prevention of rickets among children. Vitamin D should be considered essential for overall health and well-being. Vitamin D deficiency and decreased exposure to solar UVB radiation have been demonstrated to increase the risks of many common cancers, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, and there are indications that they may be associated with type 2 diabetes (125, 126) and schizophrenia (127–129). The photosynthesis of vitamin D has been occurring in living organisms for > 500 million years, and it is not surprising that vitamin D has evolved into such an important and necessary hormone, which acts as an indicator of overall health and well-being. Vigilance in maintaining a normal vitamin D status, ie, 25(OH)D concentrations of 75–125 nmol/L, should be a high priority. Surveillance for vitamin D deficiency, with measurement of 25(OH)D concentrations, should be part of normal yearly physical examinations. - SourceTL;DR: Whew, what a whammy. Our bodies need Vitamin D. It helps protect us against cancer, heart disease, bone structure impairment, depression and many other diseases. Most of the world population have a Vitamin D deficiency, Black and Hispanic people are even more prone to that than Caucasians. Vitamin D is produced on our skin by UVB rays. However, glass absorbs all UVB and sunscreen absorbs about 95-98% of all UVB rays. So even when spending time in the sun with sunscreen, we can be deficient. Supplements only get absorbed to about 60% into the relevant protein, the rest gets stored in fat. Please get your Vitamin D levels checked and don't be scared to sit in the sun without sunscreen. Not saying never wear sunscreen, but don't panic if you do.Don't let this sub scare you indoors, sometimes they can get a little obsessive. They don't mean harm, it just seems a bit misguided at times.EDIT: This post wasn't intended to be used as a way to say "use supplements and still live in a cave forever". I just wanted to shed light on a fact that probably affects us and is a health issue. We've had a few posts which concerned me because of the sheer obsessiveness about sun exposure. Along with the health concerns talked about in the AB post, I wanted to open the door to a conversation that's more than just "avoid the sun forever" because sometimes thats what it feels like here.

[Misc] List of product alternatives to Rodan + Fields

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm not really sure how much interest there is for this, but I've seen a couple requests for product alternatives to R+F and figured, hey, it'd probably be nice to have a list to refer back to. This definitely isn't exhaustive by any means, but hopefully it's helpful for people who like the products but don't want to support an MLM. (Or for people who think the products sound interesting but don't know where to start searching for non-MLM alternatives!) I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here but maybe this will help someone :)These aren't all 'dupes' - I haven't tried R+F, so I have no idea what the user experience for their products are like, and I figure some people might be more interested in the star ingredients, or some people might be looking for a different consistency anyway! I did try to bold the products I felt would be closest to R+F in terms of star ingredients and user experience, but again, this is just going off the product descriptions.I tried to include products from a variety of price points and interests as much as possible: drugstore, high end, natural, clinical, no-frills, all-frills, yadda yaddaAnd this list definitely needs more recs! I did a quick initial search, but please recommend things and I'll add them! I'm especially interested in recs for:Brightening toners - I knew y'all have a million recs for these so I admittedly didn't search too hardVitamin C (ascorbic acid) moisturizersSelf tannersAnd please chime in if you have experience with any of these products! I'm especially interested in the SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream and the SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment, since the texture of both of those is likely more important than the star ingredients.REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum ($99 for 60 capsules) - [Miscellaneous] People with dry skin or moisture barrier issues: how often you moisturise each day?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Just intrigued to hear more about how often those with dry skin or barrier issues moisturise on any given day and if you have any tactics to stay hydrated.I have dry, eczema prone skin and feel very hydrated after my routine but an hour or two later, my skin will start to feel tight or flakey. I've started carrying a moisturiser with me everywhere I go so I can remember to re-moisturise if needed but I haven't really seen much of an improvement over time. No matter how much I moisturise, my face always feels dry again within hours. I'd be interested in hearing more about your experiences and tactics!

[Personal] Mate at the uni made my day

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had acne since I was 13 yo (I'm 20 now). There's been some ups and downs but my skin was always my biggest insecurity, making me anxious and so on. Yesterday I was waiting for one lecture and this mate comes up to me. He said that he hasn't seen me in a while (irony, we saw one another three days before). And then he said: "Sorry, I just need to tell you. Your skin has improved so much! It's hard not to notice". I've been smiling ever since, it's so amazing when someone completely random sees the positive results.

[acne] I recently started using extremely liberal amounts of moisturizer and it's the only thing that's ever seemingly helped

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had acne for years and tried proactive, different cleansers, exfoliants (all while using moisturizer as well). Over time I tried doing a water only regiment which kinda helped my skin calm down and helped the acne but didn't completely get rid of it then lately I just started slathering on a ton of lubriderm a few times a day and my skin is more clear and happier than it's ever been and I feel like my skin has basically just been dehydrated this whole time in hindsight I was using maybe a fraction of the amount of moisturizer I should have been using but I'm glad it seems to be working now

[review][misc] DECIEM didn't publish my review of The Ordinary Buffet + Copper on their product page, and this is what it said...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I posted this on June 14th, if you look at the product page, reviews after I submitted mine were approved. Also, I purchased the product directly from their website, so they can verify I purchased it. Here is what my review said..I bought this right after it was launched and began applying a drop or two it twice a day on the entire face and eyes. My skin tone looks great and I do heal faster from hormonal acne lesions BUT my face and eyes have begun to get a little "saggy" or "droopy".  I did a bit of research, and I think it's the ARGIRELOX Complex.  Just about every expert opinion out there recommends to not apply "Argireline" (one of the two forms in the complex) on the entire face but only on target zones - such as the lines on the forehead or wrinkle next to the eyes. So, I will be using the remaining half bottle of this for spot treatments.  I'm really surprised that NONE of the other reviewers have had this issue and I'm disappointed that I have not had the magical results of others have noted here. I really wanted to try Copper Peptides (and I'm glad I did) but I will no longer apply any product that contains any Argireline or it's relatives and derivatives on my entire face.  Yea, yea, I know DECIEM's return policy - it's useless for me since I live in Europe (not UK) and shipping it back will cost more than the price of the product. : /Meanwhile, I wrote to DECIEM directly to ask why my review was not approved. Anyway, now I know WHY there are no other reviews on the page discussing this and it makes me wonder what things they are censoring. It's been five days that I've stopped applying the Buffet+copper - and put Hylamide SubQ in its palce - and things are starting to look better. I'm not back to where I was, yet, before I started with this serum. I'm not saying my face was melting off with Buffet+Copper but I thought my eyes are a little bit different than puffy, I don't know, the area under my brows was looking lightly droopy. Also, the bottom part of my face was looking more "droopy" than usual. I can't explain it. I used plain 'ol buffet a couple of years ago and it did NOTHING for me. I have not idea if its been reformulated since then or the copper somehow makes the argireline work better. The +copper definitely absorbed much better and faster than the original Buf and it had visible effects on inflammation.

[Acne] [B&A] 99% acne free through consistency and simple routine

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a 27 year old female and have been acne free (other than the random pimple here and there) for about a year now. I have skin on the dryer side. Throughout high school and college I had very mild acne (but worse than my current skin) and didn't really do much about it as it didn't bother me. For example, I didn't wash my makeup off every night. Fast forward to around 23 years old and I started to develop deeper more painful pimples on my cheeks that would take weeks to go away. They never really came to a head but I did try to pop them (I know, but I can't resist). Eventually it spread to my chin and forehead, forcing me to wear heaving concealer and foundation everyday. I didn't leave the house without makeup. I also had bad PIH, particularly on my cheeks. I tried all the drugstore stuff first with no success, tried curology with no success and then finally got put on clindamycin and .1% differin. I did this for about 6 months and my skin was beautiful (after the awful flaking and purging stage). Eventually I realized I couldn't be on antibiotics forever, so I tried just differin. Eventually the acne came back, probably not as bad but not good either.Through SCA and acne . org I FINALLY found the routine that worked for me and luckily it's pretty inexpensive. Remember I have normal to dry acne prone skin, so this routine might not suit someone with oily skin. It also took me about 2 months of consistently doing the below to see results. And with additional time my acne scars have faded.Morning:Wash face with water if taking an AM shower, if not then I don't wash at all.Apply 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide from acne. org, allow 1 min or so to dryCeraVe facial moisturizing PM lotion (I like the PM one because it's light and moisturizing, I also have the AM version which I use occasionally but it's heavier than my other sunscreens (ex. Biore watery essence)Evening:Remove eye makeup with oil cleanser if neededWash face with CeraVe hydrating facial cleanserWipe face with Stridex Maximum (2%) wipes in the red box - After much research and using many different brands of SA, I stuck with this one because it has the correct pH. IMPORTANT: give the SA 5-10 minutes to do it's job (exfoliate) before moving on. Some people even wash it off after 10 minutes to reduce the chance of irritation.Apply 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide from acne. org, allow 1 min or so to dryApply CeraVe skin renewing night creamWeekly:About once a week I skip the stridex and apply The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution and leave on for ~12 minutes. I still follow it up with BP and night cream. I just started this step a few months ago, so I don't think it's at all necessary. I had great results before it, but I feel like it makes my skin "glow" if only for a day. :)That's it!20162016_______________________Today - As I said, I still get the occasional pimple (never cysts though) - you can see the mark left behind the most recent on under my noseAfterNow that I've addressed my acne, I decided to work on anti-aging. Initially I tried differin again and had an allergic reaction (twice, because I'm stubborn). I didn't like the few lines I had on my forehead, so I got a small amount of botox and loved the result. The results only last ~4 months, so I got it a second time. About 2 months into my second round I switched up my routine to include The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (Previously Advanced Retinoid 2%). Since retinoids shouldn't be used at the same time as SA but have to be used at night, I had to move my routine around to the following:Morning:Stridex, wait 5-10 minsBP 2.5%CeraVe PMEvening:Makeup remover for eyesCeraVe hydrating cleanserThe Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, I give it a min or 2 to dryCeraVe skin renewing night creamI've been using the retinoid for about 6 months now and feel no need to get botox! My forehead lines are virtually gone! And I have zero irritation, which can sometimes happen with retinoid products. On The Ordinary's site they rate this one as low/no irritation, which is why I picked it because my reaction to the differin was awful.
