Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have struggled for 15 years with acne, 29F. The list of topicals cover pretty much the big guys - Retin-A, Tazorac, Differin, Epiduo, clindamyacin, benzoyl peroxide, AHA, BHA, azelaic acid...EVERYTHING. Finally resorted to Accutane, but after a six month course, I still wasn’t completely clear. There was something going on that I couldn’t figure out.I thought perhaps I was allergic to an ingredient - and I did discover (after one year of being addicted to Cosdna) that I was sensitive to coconut oil. I had been cleansing with a coconut oil cleanser and infested my face with closed comedones - so out went that ingredient.STILL I was struggling with cc’s and bumpy texture, a few blackheads. Tried repairing my moisture barrier, did the slug life thing for a bit, it did help to an extent but I was still breaking out and feeling dehydrated.Then...I read about fungal acne, and I did notice that my skin itched at times. I went the anti-fungal route, topically and internally. Zinc pyrithione soap, Nizoral, eliminated esters, started taking raw garlic and probiotics (and cleaned out my system), eliminated dairy, and drank kefir. And my dandruff, eczema and my itchiness stopped! HOWEVER...I was still breaking out, but definitely much less. And I struggled with mild rosacea and PIE (the red marks, not brown). (NOTE: I started craving alcohol a LOT less after an anti-fungal diet, and my tolerance has gotten very low. Only one drink for me!)It got me thinking about acne and diet...if acne is an inflammation of the skin, and there is a link to gut health/stress/diet to acne, then...perhaps there is also a link to inflammation inside the body that is showing up on the outside?SO...then began an anti-inflammatory diet. Turmeric, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, cod liver oil/omega 3’s. Leafy greens, tomatoes, quality extra virgin olive oil, fatty fish (I live overseas so I stock up on bottles at duty-free shops, Italian/Greek/Spanish are the best). And lots and lots of water. In a few days, my appetite changed - I didn’t feel the need to stuff myself during meals, and I started craving bread and sugar less. And lo and behold - my skin is the glowiest its been (without any oils or Vitamin C), and my redness and rosacea vanished. I still have a few small pimples but it’s INCREDIBLE how much of a difference it’s made in my overall redness and complexion.DIETPROBIOTICS: Organic kefir with flaxseeds, or plain Greek yogurt.TURMERIC: Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory ingredient. Fresh squeezed orange juice with turmeric powder (sounds strange, but the only way I can drink it...plus some Vitamin C), turmeric-honey tea (I add a tsp of turmeric to boiled water, stir with a drizzle of honey), add turmeric to chicken or curries, also turmeric/curcumin supplements.OMEGA-3’s: Cod liver oil supplements every day (check really carefully the mg of EPA/DHA on the back, they’re all different!), fatty fish, extra virgin olive oil, flaxseeds.Lots of leafy greens (put them into smoothies as well); kiwi, orange, pineapple are high in Vitamin C, tomatoes (vitamin C, lycopene for anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant), blueberries (anti-oxidants).Once a week I take extra probiotic and Vitamin D supplements, but prefer to get my nutrition from food. Generally I already eat pretty clean but I focus more on the anti-inflammatory, immmune-boosting, healthy gut foods.ROUTINEAM Avene Gentle Cleanser Institut Esthederm Propolis Serum Timeless Squalane Serum Cerave CreamPM Noble 2% Zinc Pyrithione soap 3x/week Avene Gentle Cleanser PC 2% BHA 1x/week Institut Esthederm Propolis Serum Timeless Squalane Serum Cerave Cream Avene Cicalfate (if needed for extra moisture)Check your diet, people. Skin health is a direct relation to our internal system. So YES, “judge a book by its cover” - the quality of skin on the outside will tell you what’s on the inside.
