Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a 27 year old male, who has been having serious issues with my skin ever since I can remember. When I was 16 I had the worst case of Acne my dermatologist had seen, and I was so heavily depressed due to it. You wouldn't be able to tell if you met me, but I am really self-conscious about my skin, and wake up every morning examining it, expecting more problems. After being on Roaccutane/ Isotretinoin for several years, and being on it more than the average person, my face cleared up, but I was still having issues. This is when I finally got diagnosed with Rosacea. So, my late 20's have been plagued with red rashes/pimples/blemishes on my face due to the Rosacea, and I have tried so many different products to try clear my skin. Obviously all failed, and I just accepted the fact that I was going to have shit skin for the rest of my life. That was until about 2 months ago, when I bought an Aloe Vera plant, mainly to heal my sunburn (It's hot af in Australia). Anyway I started putting Aloe Vera straight from the plant on my face every night before bed to help soothe my Sunburn. That's when I started to realize that my face was clearing up immensely. I've been putting natural Aloe Vera on my face each night before bed, and honestly haven't had an issue with my skin since.I'm sure people are already aware of this, but I just wanted to make a post in case there were other people out there who have had the same skin issues as me, who are desperate for a new way to battle the condition.Just FYI, I cut the Aloe Very Plants into about 5-10cm stems, and put them in the fridge. When I need one, I slice the plant in half, and directly rub it on my face. It's very soothing, and honestly has helped me so much.Hopefully this posts helps someone. Thanks!

[Meta] Best thing(s) you've done for your skin in 2018?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
2018 was a rough year for my skin after quitting hormonal birth control and, unbeknownst to me, using makeup products that were breaking me out, but I've taken a lot of steps to get back on track and my skin is thanking me big time! The best things I've done for my skin this year are:Stopping exfoliating every day! Yep, I was physically exfoliating every day. I was under the impression that this would help unclog my pores and help shed dead skin faster in order to stop me from forming new pimples. While there may be some truth to that, it was only irritating my skin and stripping it of moisture, which brings me to....Making moisture a priority in my routine. I finally figured out that all the actives and acids in the world weren't going to do a thing for me if my skin was dry and irritated. I cut out most actives, save for BP and azelaic acid and focused on moisturizing and locking that moisture in. My skin no longer feels tight, even after cleansing, and it feels so smooth all the time!Figuring out that I'm sensitive to dimethicone. This one was probably the best game changer for me. I had previously thought that my acne was purely hormonal, but when I did some research about potential acne-causing ingredients in makeup, I came across dimethicone, a silicone which is found in a lot of liquid makeup and skincare. I initially brushed it off because it's in almost EVERYTHING and I didn't want to give up my favorite products, but I finally took the plunge and stopped using my BB cream, concealer, sunscreen, and moisturizer, all of which contained dimethicone, and my active acne went down by probably 90%. I replaced them with dimethicone-free products and it's been smooth sailing ever since!I'd love to hear from everyone else about their 2018 accomplishments!!edit: a word

[personal] [misc] Listen in everyone, y’all have changed my life
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have had lifelong problems with angry, red, dry skin on my face and growing up with a mom and sister who had a completely different skin type I had no clue how to care for my skin. For years I just tried to get by and slathered aquaphor only on my face which helped a little, but was no where near solving my problems. After finding this subreddit and following a strict yet simple skin care routine that was actually tailored to my skin type, I am now SO confident in my skin. I get so many compliments when I’m make up free about how my skin is just glowing and it looks so healthy when for years I had dull lifeless skin like a mummy. It’s amazing how sticking to a skin care routine with the products that your skin needs can just change your entire life. So once again, thank you so much for all of your stories and advice! If you are curious what my current, simple routine is, here you go!: (I shower at night for reference to get the daily ick off from my my job in healthcare)PM: - Remove makeup with one of those “Face Erase” towels (I love these things, they work soooo much better than I could have ever expected - Cleanse with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser - Moisturize with CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing LotionAM: - Cleanse again (not always needed) with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser - Moisturize with CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing LotionCompared to a lot of routines I see on this page, mine is soooo simple I’m almost embarrassed. However if it keeps working as well as it has been, I’m afraid to change anything!

[Personal] Woman who waxed my eyebrows today told me that I wasn't taking care of my skin.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just got my eyebrows and lip waxed at a new place nearby. The lady who did my eyebrows didn't have very nice eyebrows herself, so I was a little worried and made sure to emphasize that I like the form, just needed them to be cleaned up. It's NYE and I didn't have any other option. Well, my eyebrows turned out fine. However, the lady was extremely rude. She immediately asked me if I'm doing anything for my acne.I have always had a bit of acne. I believe it's hormonal. Along my cheekbones. I had clear skin when I used birth control for a year 2 years ago, and maintained it after I got off of it with a good routine and diet. But then, it went crazy in September for a myriad of possible reasons like stress, seasonal changes, change of air.I eventually decided to try Differin, because even when my skin was pretty clear, I still had closed comedones.I'm a month along, so my skin is not ideal, purging and stuff...I had put sunscreen on before the appointment (everywhere else on my face, not where I would be waxed), which is pretty rich, so my skin looked kind of greasy. She told me that I wasn't taking good care of my skin. That I shouldn't be using such a rich sunscreen if my skin is already oily.well, my skin isn't oily! Well, I have combination skin, so it gets oily throughout the day, but lately it's dry from the differin! It only looked oily because I just put a rich sunscreen on.And that just made me so upset. She doesn't know how much time I spend browsing this subreddit and other blogs. How many products I have. What my routine is. What factors like genetics and hormones (OH, JUST GOT MY PERIOD TODAY, BTW) are at play...I will not quit differin until I give it the whole three months. I can see the closed comedones slowly surfacing like they must... I will be patient and not let this scenario damper my start of 2019...Oh, and by the way, even though I avoided putting the differin cream on my mustache area and eyebrows for a couple weeks before the waxing, they still are very sensitive, more than usual. No skin was ripped off, but definitely is more irritated than usual. I could not put on anything to sooth it without it burning besides aquaphor.

[personal] My Face ID doesn’t recognise me anymore since my acne has cleared!!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Since I have been using less and less products my skin begins to clear and occasionally I’ll exfoliate my skin, since these changes from exfoliating 4-6 times a week my skin has gotten brighter and clearer and I have never been happier, to make things better my Face ID hasn’t been recognising me for about 2 weeks and I haven’t updated it because every time I attempt to it makes me feel instantly happier with my skin and my self-confidence from where I came from around 12 weeks ago! Happy new year everyone!!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I just got home from a long shift at work that resulted in a few chipped nails. I also ran out of cotton balls so I decided to use some nail polish remover on my cotton face pads, but as soon as the remover hit that pad my dumbass lizard brain thought “oh? Micellar water time?” and now I’m scrubbing pure acetone off my cheek. Thanks r/skincareaddiction for taking over everything I do, apparently.

[Skin concern] can we talk jowls?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hiya,I've recently started an anti-aging regime. I've found the ordinary to be really beneficial for my fine lines (and eye bags, yay!) However my concern is that bad jowls seem to catch up with everyone in my family.I'm not opposed to face lifts in the future, but is there anything I can do to prevent jowls forming (even a little bit of prevention?) I'm open to anything. Thanks!

[Misc] As 2018 comes to a close, I want to share about the effect my life had on my skin
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I know we often talk about the negative effect acne has on our mental health (which is absolutely true), but I want to talk today about the effect our personal lives have on our skin health. At the beginning of 2018, I was entering into the second year of a terrible relationship. My partner was angry, controlling, and hurtful and would say things frequently like “no one will ever really love you” and put me down by calling my stupid, annoying, worthless, etc. etc. I felt pretty worthless and my skin looked terrible. I had cystic bumps everywhere and while my skin has never looked amazing, it was getting particularly bad. I really thought that I was too ugly for anyone else to love and that I needed my skin to clear up before I could leave my awful relationship.A few months later, I cracked under the weight of this living hell and I left my partner. While my skin didn’t clear up over night, I slowly started having the energy to take better care of myself, stop picking at my skin (because I felt less anxious), and finally hauled myself into seeing a dermatologist. Now that 2018 is almost over, I’ve never had clearer skin as an adult. I’m feeling happier in my personal life (with a new partner that loves me regardless of what my skin looks like) and I feel very happy about my smooth skin.I hope that anyone else out there going through something similar believes me when I say: You are enough right now. You deserve love and good self care now. May your 2019 be happy and positive for you. Please take care of yourself.

[acne] I've never had a problem with acne, but in the past 3 weeks one side of my face got really severe acne, really fast. (see photos). Strange thing is it only occurs on one side of my face; the other parts are clear. These bumps seem never-ending and the area keeps spreading. Anyone knows why?

[Misc] I let my SO see me without makeup for the first time, and I feel free.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Please forgive me for I have sinned...when my SO would come to stay the night (about 5-8 times now) I'd sleep in my makeup to hide the acne scars and marks that I didn't want him to see.I know this is bad and I can see a negative difference in my skin when I do it, so last night I decided to take it off. Of course I made him turn around and allow me to shut the lights off when I walked in.This morning was fair game for him to see everything. I was ready to hide my face and quickly run to do makeup, but he stopped me and said "It's nice to see the real you. I love you."I melted a little. All this time I've been so scared, anxiety ridden, and honestly very sad about my skin around him, and I didn't have to be.Friendly reminder that your skin looks worse to you than it does to others, and it matters more to you than it does to others. You're beautiful regardless of what your skin is doing... Sometimes it genuinely is out of our control and we try a million products, prescriptions, and remedies, only to be let down and frustrated. It's so hard to not have perfect skin, but you don't have to have perfect skin to be loveable or beautiful. Thanks for the encouragement I've received through reading this sub for the past 2 years. I thought of y'all cheering me on when I was going to wash my face, and I really appreciate the support.

I'm already seeing progress from following a steady routine.3) Wear sunscreen everyday (something I really skipped a lot this year)Share some of your goals and/ or resolutions! [acne] am I crazy or did Vitamin D totally change my skin game?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had what seems to be stress/hormonal acne since I was 16. When I was 21 I started on Diane-35 birth control (generic brand) which really worked wonders for me but after chopping and changing pills after a couple of years it no longer seemed to be doing much. I'm now 26 and it became particularly bad this last year, the kind of pimples that will sit inflamed on your skin for months and leave a nasty red scar behind. I experimented heaps with my skincare routine but nothing seemed to help so I decided to go off birth control altogether - big mistake because my acne was no longer localised to my face and started popping up on my back and chest same as before I started taking the pill. So I went back on Diane asap but started using the actual Diane brand rather than generics which seemed to help but still didn't take me all the way there. I also cut out dairy (including protein bars which I was eating a lot of) which seemed to be a trigger. I've been taking Vitamin D tablets for the last month (DNA test revealed I'm prone to Vitamin D deficiency) and I kid you not I have not had a single zit since. Only today I found one tiny comedone which I'm typically very prone to. I've also reintroduced dairy with no issues. Has anyone else had a similar experience? My guess is that dairy is an inflammatory and Vitamin D is an anti-inflammatory?

[misc] Pro-tip: you can use hydrocolloid bandages on cold sores in addition to zits
Beauty Tips For Body Care
For me, the virus flares up when I’m close to my period or stressed. The Walgreens/Duane Reade/Shoppers Drug Marts sell hydrocolloid patches which can be used to draw out or cover a cold sore so you can apply makeup over it without directly touching the breakout.I find that they can be a taboo subject, so if you get blisters, you’re not alone—50 to 80% of adults do too :)

[Misc] I've met so many people in my 29 years.. and I've learned that as much as it sucks having bad acne while girls all around you seem to have perfect skin, they might be dealing with other things that aren't so evident.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
From time to time someone posts that they are frustrated with a similar story. I've known so many girls with perfect skin that have really awful psoriasis on their body that they hide, persistent uti's and yeast infections that due to their body can't be fixed easily.. I've met a model gorgeous woman with Crohn's disease, another with polycystic ovaries.. and just so many more stories after getting to know them that have changed my perspective over the years.I know severe acne is terrible, I've been there.. but just try to remember that almost everyone has something to deal with! Don't let it discourage too much you that yours is just more obvious. Just some words of encouragement =]

[Personal] Why I’m thankful for my acne.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m not a religious person, but I do think that I have reason to believe that things happen for a reason.I’ve had cystic acne since puberty. Not the worst case of all time, but enough to degrade my confidence. I tried normal drugstore medications, tried intense routines like most SCA people do, tried tretinoin, antibiotics, tons of topicals. Nothing seemed to really help.Fast forward to me at age 17. I was living at home with my parents, and we make the decision to try accutane. I was aware of the side effects and how time consuming it is to visit the derm, get bloodwork, do iPledge, etc. I figured, it’s worth it for clear skin someday.I still had to bring my parents to all my derm appointments because I was 17, almost 18 though, so I was almost able to go alone. It was important that my parents had to come with me for my first few visits. My dad, liking my derm, decided to get a thing on his leg checked out. He figured, at worst, it was skin cancer, so it was worth getting looked at. It wasn’t skin cancer, it was a rare form (iirc) of cancer called a leiomayosarcoma. They usually appear in women in the uterus or to men and women in the abdomen, and are very often fatal. It’s been a long road since then, and my dad just recently got his (hopefully) final surgery. He’s missing a very large piece of his leg. Getting it checked out when we did probably saved him from losing his leg, or having it spread and kill him.Today, I’m 18 and watching my skin clear from the accutane. My dad is getting better and better at walking again. As much as I’d love to have always had clear skin and my dad never get cancer, I’m incredibly thankful that I had bad skin and it caused my dad to go to the dermatologist. My dad even says. “Thank god for corgipal’s acne, it saved my life.”Things might just happen for a reason. Please, please get any moles or bumps checked out.

[Routine Help] Hello. Since the age of 14, I have been struggling with hyperpigmentation around my mouth which makes the skin around that area significantly darker than the rest of my face. I have dark circles too but with color correcting, they appear less severe.(Rest under comments)

[Personal] After months of hearing of them, I've finally bought my first pack of hydrocolloid bandages today and used them. I was so impressed by the result of a spot after 2 hours I was crying.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Short background info: I have CSP. So my spots this time of year are worse due to the dry cold here. But these bandages are a massive help already, even stopping me from picking! I put one on a blind pimple and it flatened out after 2ish hours and drained it. I was unbelievably happy with the improvement of my other spots too. I've left my skin to breathe on for tonight but I will use more tomorrow!Thanl you, Reddit. I can't thank you enough for your help and the constant flow of support and advice on this sub.Happy Holidays.💚

[misc] Texture on Nose - Blackheads or Sebaceous Filaments?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I’ve had these little dots on my nose for as long as I can remember. At first I thought they were blackheads but after a while I started thinking that they’re sebaceous filaments although now I’m not sure. It seems like no matter what I do they’re always there. The only thing that significantly helps the appearance of my nose is manual extractions with a comedone extractor followed by the Aztec Secret clay mask. However, I find that my nose always comes back to where it was in about two days and this seems to be an ineffective method as it’s a bit time-consuming and I don’t think the manual extractions are good for my skin.I have been applying TO’s salicylic acid followed by squalane oil for about a week and a half in the PM but this doesn’t seem to be doing anything.Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks so much!what my nose currently looks like

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, I’m in my 20s and would like to kick start my anti-aging routine. I am starting to get creases from not sleeping well and I want something that will moisturize my undereyes as well as prevent wrinkles. Im trying to find something rather inexpensive, but I know skincare can be pricey! Thanks in advance!

[Personal] Words I'd never imagined hearing. After struggling for 18 years I was told by a stranger yesterday I had the skin of a model. (long)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a woman and since the age of 13 I've struggled with constant breakouts and the mental turmoil its brought. Perhaps you can relate to how easy it is to mentally torture ourself, it feels like a manifestation of all our faults that people can directly see on the most exposed part of our body. Any time we ever felt ugly or mentally low, acne seems to become the physical reflection of our problems. Just at Christmas I was talking to one of my male cousins about this. Due to having such bad acne growing up he had constantly slouched to avoid attention, curling his shoulders over to the point where he now has a prominently curved spine and back problems. Even after the acne has faded the scars run deep. For myself I actually managed to make peace with my skin. I have accepted I would never in my life experience a day without a pimple and found positive ways to feel about this. Much of my depression was healed through Buddhist practice and I found that with it, i didn't care so much about how I looked or felt, I stopped wearing any makeup over 5 years ago now. I actually do feel lucky to experience this suffering so that I can know what others deal with too. The one thing that caused me to stop on this sub earlier this year looking for advice, was something I don't think often gets mentioned in general when it comes to bad skin, and that's how painful physically it can get. It's not always just how it looks, or how it makes us feel in terms of attractiveness or confidence. It's physically having wounds, painful lumps, pus filled, tingly and tight, throbbing pustules that can weep and bleed and scab and itch. My skin is dry, sensitive and I'm prone to rosacea and eczema. I started a new job that was in a dirty environment, I'd have to wear masks and goggles and other safety wear, and it would rub on my skin, at the end of the day i'd be covered in dust and my skin got worse. So I decided for my physical health I would start to take better care of my body and I've been experimenting with my routine for the best part of 2018. I'm still trying to find my groove, but I think the majority of the works done now and I no longer have painful skin, nor for the first time in 18 years, any pimples. Then unexpectedly this Christmas I received 2 compliments on my skin. Some comments from family as we ate our dinner which I brushed off as normal (after all everyones skin looks better after some rest). But surprisingly another came from a friend of my Aunts who I hadn't met before. She said I had lovely skin that glows, and I could be a model...I know of course she was just being kind, by no means is my skin perfect, but still. Never in a million years did I think I would hear anybody saying I had nice skin, ever. It's surreal. I'm so pleased this community exists, especially for the younger generation because I know at that age we are the most vulnerable. I only wish I had found this sub myself 18 years ago, a lot would be different I think. Finally I would like to say, for those of us afflicted by imperfect skin the real healing has to come from finding peace.Don't just try to heal your skin for the sake of others, or how you'll look, don't base your self worth on your skin, waiting for the day you'll hear someone say you have the skin of a model. A famous Buddhist master has said, 'it seems as if the whole world is afflicted by madness, because they think that beauty is only skin deep.' Do it because your health demands it. It's not about looking good, making others find you attractive. It's not about stopping unsolicited comments or questions about 'what did you do to your face?'. That will all come naturally. It's because you need to find peace and contentment to be happy. To feel beautiful means to realise your own good qualities, especially the non-physical ones such as love and kindness. So do what you need to do to be at peace with your skin, others, your life and everything in it, and you will become truely beautiful. Everything else will take care of itself.

[Acne] The Ocean does wonders for my skin
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So i'm a 22 year old male that has just gotten into skincare and i have some acne on my forehead. I know fuck all about skincare and only use CeraVe moisturizer and BioNatural oil from sukin which i don't think does much at all for my skin. Anyway, these past 2 days i have been going for ocean dips then chilling in the sun for a bit and my acne has cleared up so much it's amazing. Anyone have similar experiences?

[Acne] I have a hard acne bump that won't pop.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
It seemed to start out as a deep pimple, felt like a huge bruise. I eventually "popped" it but didn't get any pus, only blood/plasma. It doesn't hurt anymore, but it feels like a huge hard cyst. There's something in there. I used a needle earlier to poke a few holes and only blood came gushing out. I thought maybe it was a pocket full of blood instead of pus since the blood eventually stopped when I pressed on it & only had plasma. How do I get rid of it? Is it even a pimple? I tried to take a picture, but it's too blurry. Thanks for any advice!

[Product Question] Is it recommended to use Vitamin C and Azelaic Acid together?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m trying to treat my PIE, and have not seen any results from Niacinamide, so I’m thinking of trying Azelaic Acid. Is it fine to use with my TO Vitamin C (23%) or will that be too harsh?

[Acne] I Received Unsolicited Advice the Other Day, and it Feels Awful
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I (19M) have been dealing with acne since I was 14-15. I break out on my neck, back and chest as well as my face, and I'm on my third Dermatologist (here's to hoping).Anyway, I was flying home from vacation on Christmas Day. I sat next to a young mom, likely late 20s, with her small child. We said our greetings and made the typical "so going home or heading out" exchange. Nothing else was said between us for a long while. Well over an hour into the flight, after I had dozed for a bit, I was reading a book. The woman speaks up (remember, after a long bout of no conversation, and I'm deep in a book) and says, "Can I tell you something without sounding... awkward?"Sure, I think, go ahead. I probably already know what it's about. I tell her sure."I had pretty bad acne when I was younger. Have you heard of hydrocolloid bandages?""Yeah," I said, "I actually have some and use them. I also go to the derm-""Yeah, well," She interjects, "Hydrocolloid bandages, they really help. I didn't know about them at first. I really wish somebody had told me about them sooner."I really wish somebody had told me about them sooner. All I could say was that I appreciated the advice. Even though I already use hydrocolloid bandages. I was left in an anxiety filled stupor. The fact that the advice was unwanted wasn't even the worst part. It was the implication of the statement. That my face (and probably neck) looked bad enough to warrant using bandages, and to my understanding, she was saying that I should maybe use them when I'm in public. Let me tell you, it fucking hurt. I was anxious and my mind racing. I was also angry and upset; I wanted to be malicious and hateful, to tell her that her kid was an obnoxious little thing or that she really couldn't pull off those glasses. Of course I didn't, but it really is a stab in the gut for somebody to say something like that to you. I hate it. I know my face looks bad, it's my overarching source of anxiety and self-loathing. I think about it all the time, and for somebody who I've said hardly said more than "merry christmas" to is giving me unsolicited advice. Thanks, lady, for the mental punch in the gut.Sorry about the rant. I had to get it out to someone. Type it out. I really just want to say this: don't give unsolicited advice, even if you dealt with acne yourself; everybody's skin is different, so your advice could be ineffective. I know most of you on this sub already practice this, but I really want y'all to understand how hurtful it can be.

[Skin Concerns] Armpit Pimple Emergency
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Basically, I came home and noticed a pretty big cyst/pimple on my armpit (not too good with the terminology) and being the dumbass that I am I instinctively decided to pop it. That probably wasn’t too bright of an idea since now it hurts quite a bit. I even feel it when I move my arm. I quickly swabbed it with rubbing alcohol to prevent it from getting infected but that’s all. I am completely new to skincare and I would greatly appreciate some guidance on how to treat it and advice for how to deal with things like this in the future. Thanks guys.

[Skin Concerns] Help! Is this rosacea, acne, something else?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi all, so I know I should go to a dermatologist to get a professional diagnosis, but for the time being I’m curious as to what your opinions are.My skin is very red/pink and has been for years! I have really dry skin and I’m searching for a solution because I’m tired of having to wear a full coverage foundation all of the time. Is this rosacea? Acne? Something else?http://imgur.com/Fxoam4iThanks in advance. Any advice is welcome!!

[Misc] What's the worst skincare advice(s) you've ever recieved?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
For me it was when I was suffering with teenage hormonal acne years back and a family friend told my mum I need to scrub my face daily with a mixture of sea salt and straight tea tree oil to clear my skin then moisturise with olive oil because commercial moisturisers are too harsh. THANKFULLY, my mum knew better than to follow that advice and took me to a doctor and I was put on a birth control pill that cleared my acne.

[misc] I worked out how to take care of my skin when I can’t function (I’m autistic).
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m sharing this in the hope that it will help someone with the same kind of problem out! So as the title says, I’m autistic and sometimes I have periods of time (days, weeks, even a couple of months occasionally) where I get so burnt out and overstimulated and overwhelmed that doing any sort of skincare routine is impossible. For the last two weeks I’ve been absolutely making myself wipe my face thoroughly with micellar water after my shower where I wash my face with Simple refreshing gel cleanser. I keep the micellar water (nothing fancy, just garnier) and the cotton pads on the sink so can’t forget and I do it while I brush my teeth. My acne covered skin is nearly as clear as It is when I do my whole routine, so I couldn’t be happier. Cleanse your face properly, pals, even when you can’t do anything else. You’ll be surprised at what a difference it makes.tl;dr - double cleaning your face makes your skin happy even if you do nothing else

[Routine help] What are your budget friendly, *CHEAP* skincare favorites?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve been put in a position recently where I have a very limited amount of money to spend on skincare, but my skin is too prone to eczema and other painful conditions to not use anything. I’m looking to pair back to cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I’ll probably spend the most on sunscreen, as I think this is probably the most essential and hardest to find budget friendly options with that don’t destroy my sensitive skin. What are your cheap skincare favorites?

[Skin Concern] [Help] Differin Gel causing skin to dry and burn
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone! I'm new and this is my first post here. My Derm recently prescribed Differin gel for acne control. I've used it for 5 days now and am supposed to continue for a month but its drying my skin out. It stings after applying and now there's tiny red patch on my cheek that really burns. I tried applying a moisturizer after the gel but that just caused my whole face to burn. I had to wash it off. I've never used it before, so I dont know if its normal. Has this ever happened to anyone before? And how can I make it better? Im currently using a body shop moisturizer but I dont think its working very well. So can anyone recommend me any moisturizers that would go well with differin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Acne] [Advice Needed] Need Help Defeating Post-Pill Acne: The Ballad of a Near-28-Year-Old with a 13-Year-Old's Face
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Happy Holidays, all! Background:About 1-2 months ago, I stopped taking birth control (Ortho Tri-Cyclen) and, over the past few weeks, have noticed a significant decline in my skin. It began with some new little white heads and small cystic acne on my chin and jawline, and is now spreading to my back, chest, neck, and forehead.I've had acne for nearly 19 years (beginning around 9 years old), but have had a good grasp on a consistent routine that works for the past 4-5 years.I had been on the pill on and off (mostly on) for nearly 10 years, and have experienced breakouts from going off it before. The way I combated it in the past was by...not combating it, giving up and starting back on the pill (lol). Funnily enough, my skin actually does really well for the first 1-2 weeks off the pill, and then all hell breaks loose. So here I am with painful zits, bumpy skin, and red marks all over, feeling like a dorky middle school kid again. (Although I feel that pang of embarrassment every time I look in the mirror, I'm grateful that my confidence is a lot higher than it was in the past, otherwise I'm not sure I'd ever leave my bedroom.)Current routine:AM - Gently rinse face with cool water, pat dry with new towel, moisturize with CeraVe PM face lotion, apply Paula's Choice AHA or BHA gel (alternate every 1-2 days; some days with AHA, some with BHA, some without either), let dry, cover up spots only with NYX concealer.PM - Gently rinse face with CeraVe Facial Foaming Cleanser, pat dry with towel, moisturize with CeraVe PM face lotion, apply Paula's Choice BHA gel (nightly), let dry before going to sleep/laying down.Other helpful info:- I eat 80-85% vegan, 15-20% vegetarian (a.k.a. I eat chocolate and cheese now and again). I very rarely eat dairy products, although my diet has been slightly off since getting a stomach bug a week ago and then, admittedly, indulging in holiday junk food over the past few days. I'm now reincorporating more vegetable juices (not fruit-based) and kombucha into my routine, and I'm cutting out dairy and reducing my processed sugar intake (goodbye to chocolate, my one true love, for a while).- I shower every 2-3 days and use Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne wash with salicylic acid on my neck/back/shoulders/chest after shampoo/conditioner. This was working really well while I was still on the pill, but has been less effective since stopping the pill.- I wash my clothes/bed sheets/towels with All Free and Clear detergent.- I use Biore UV Aqua Rich sunscreen (SPF 50+), which has been a good fit for my skin.- I take a vegan multi-vitamin, B-12 supplement, and a magnesium supplement daily. (None of these have ever made me break out before.)- I use SLS-free toothpaste, shampoo, and conditioner.- I avoid touching my face outside of my skin care routine (i.e. no popping, picking, wiping, or leaning on anything).- I'm regularly active, but have taken a few weeks off from going to the gym.- I drink a lot of water. Now:My current routine was working brilliantly when I was on the pill, but hasn't been nearly as effective since stopping the pill. Fortunately, I've noticed that my acne, though worse than usual, has still been responding positively to the BHA gel. It seems the BHA is healing some of the spots in a few days and seemingly keeping some of the cystic/hormonal acne to a minimum, but there are still new pesky buggers that pop up overnight on my face, and my back and chest are going a bit berserk.I'm committed to staying off of the pill for good this time, even with the understanding that this may take a few months to settle down and get back to normal.I'd love to establish a set of tools to get rid of this damn acne without stocking my entire bedroom and bathroom with things that I really don't need (can't tell you how many times I've added, then deleted, silk pillow cases from my Amazon list).I've heard great things about some supplements and oils (spearmint, primrose, zinc), but don't have much experience with any outside of my daily vitamins (listed above). What are your suggestions to combat this post-pill acne? Which nutrients is my body in need of now that the pill may have depleted? What helpful foods/supplements/oils/witchcraft can I add to my diet/routine? (FYI, I'm not above performing a seance if the dead have any skincare advice.)TL;DR: Zits and hormonal acne taking over after stopping birth control pill. Advice needed!

[Review] Empty - Garden of Wisdom 8% Azelaic Acid Serum
Beauty Tips For Body Care
GoW 8% Azelaic Acid SerumPrice: $19.15 for 1oz on GoW (sample size of 0.25oz for $5.70)Victoria Health carries GoW 10% Azelaic Acid Serum for £9.00Ingredients: Spring Water, Azelaic Acid, Liposome Base (soy based), Allantoin, Glycerin, Sclerotium Gum, Leucidal SFSpecial Info: pH of 4.4; fragrance-free; doesn’t test on animals (unsure if cruelty free); azelaic acid is derived from castor beans, not wheatThe 10% Azelaic Acid Serum (UK) has a pH 5.3 – 5.5Review: I’ve been interested in trying azelaic acid in order to address some general redness, but I was put off by the reviews of the popular products (Melazepam, The Ordinary.) It’s not that I don’t love thick goopy formulas, it’s just that I don’t have room for another one in my routine and I was worried that it’d have a slippy silicone feel I’m not a fan of. So I was pretty excited when I found out that Garden of Wisdom has an azelaic acid serum (excited enough to skip the sample size!)Ingredients of note: The star of the show is obviously azelaic acid, which has been shown to be effective in treating acne [1, 2, 3, 4], rosacea [5, 6, 7], and hyperpigmentation [8, 9, 10, 11]. All of the studies I’ve seen have been on 15-20% AzA, so I wasn’t sure how GoW’s 8% would stack up - but hey, no harm in starting with a gentler product! The rest of the ingredients list is short and sweet, and the pH appears to be in the proper range for azelaic acid (super roughly estimated ~3.9 - 6ish based on Holland & Bojar and Li et al., but if someone has a different range, you should probably defer to that.)Texture & scent: This is less of a serum, more of a toner - it has a very thin, water-like texture that dries down quickly and matte. No discernable scent.Lil blopSchmearAll dry!Packaging: The packing is a nice black PET pump bottle - the pump itself does take some getting used to as the product is quite thin and liable to shoot out, but otherwise very sturdy. The only con is that near the end of the bottle, the straw gets a bit gunked up and I started getting some little crunchy bits coming out. It dissolved on my skin and didn’t bother me too much, but it’s worth noting. The instructions do say to apply to a wet face (which I happily ignored), so this might not be an issue if you’re better at following directions than I am.Experience: For reference, my skin type is overall ‘normal.’ Dry in the winter, oily in the summer. I have a bit of irritation going on at the moment, but usually my skin is pretty hardy.I started using it around the start of September and experienced no irritation at all, even though my skin was a bit sensitive at the time. I used this daily in the AM after cleansing and before moisturizer & sunscreen. Since the formula is so thin and easy to apply I had no problems with layering and it didn’t feel like I had applied any product at all - no stickiness, no shine, no nothing!I wasn’t exactly expecting a miracle - the concentration seems a bit low and I’ve tempered my expectations for actives quite a bit - but damn, this really seems to have beat back some redness! My skin tone is noticeably more even, a bit brighter, and post-acne red marks seem to be healing up a bit faster. Of course I still have normal color variation and a bit of redness, but I gave niacinamide a good (year long) shot for the same skin concerns and never saw a lick of difference, so I’m very pleased with these results! The 1oz bottle lasted me about 3.5 months - from the start of September to mid December. I’m a bit of a slatherer, so your average consumer would probably find that this lasts a bit longer than that.tl;dr: GoW 8% AzA helped me deal with some redness that I thought I’d never get rid of and let me achieve some kinda nebulous skincare goals like having a more even, brighter skin tone. It’s a freakin dream to use and I’ll definitely be repurchasing :)Pros:Thin, toner texture that’s easy to apply and dries down fastMay be suitable for sensitive skinIme, effective in treating general redness and evening skin tone (ymmv!)Cons:Concentration may be a bit lowGot a bit gunked up near the end of the bottleRating: 8.5/10, will repurchase (may see if I can get my hands on the UK version!)Have you tried GoW 8% Azelaic Acid (or a different azelaic acid)? What’d you think?

[Misc] Mother daughter bonding over the joys of skincare! A Christmas miracle!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I apologise in advance as this is probably going to be pretty long! However, I'm really happy about this and as it happened as a result of the tips and knowledge I've learnt from this sub, I thought I'd share here!So my mum and I have never really gotten on very well as we are both incredibly stubborn and have personalities that clash on an almost biblical scale! It's for this reason that I moved in with my SO after having to move back in with my parents last year due to medical issues. I went back for a few days over Christmas so I was expecting to just have to wait things out and try to stay civil until Boxing Day (today) when I would be coming back home to spend the day with my SOs family! However this Christmas has been a bit of a turning point in our ever turbulent relationship! I'd brought my "essential" skincare products over, as well as a few extras that I wasn't using or didn't get on with that I was going to leave for my mum if she liked them.Although we have different concerns with our skin, we have the same skin type and texture. I was just getting ready for bed so I was doing my nightly routine when my mum came into the spare room to "check I was all set" to leave tomorrow and to ask if I needed my brothers help carrying anything down as I have spinal problems! I'll hand it to her, she seemed to be trying as hard as I was to avoid any confrontation etc this year which was really nice!So she said she'd noticed the improvement in my skin and she asked if I would like to watch a movie and teach her what I use etc So for the first time since she taught me to paint my nails and put mascara on at the age of 12 (I'm 22 now) we sat down and had a "girly evening"! I was a little apprehensive at first but we sat down and went through her collection and I explained what they did, when and why she should use them and she tried out the acid peel I attribute the majority of my skins improvements to! We put face masks on, I painted her nails + toenails over a glass of wine and the new Peter rabbit movie! This morning she was so pleased with the results that we went shopping for some upgrades to her collection before I left to come home!So I suppose I'd like to thank you all for teaching me about skincare and for in part facilitating having a wonderful evening with my mother!

[Misc] Be kind to yourselves, however your skin looks
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Last night, I had a weird reaction to a sheet mask that I use regularly. It usually calms my skin and leaves me refreshed & dew-y, but this time it burned a bit. I woke up this morning and felt some bumps on one of my problem areas that’s hard to cover up/treat.Cue silent freak out, trying to figure out what products I have while I’m away from home to treat the bumps, worrying about how I’ll look at Christmas dinner, etc. All while still lying in bed in the dark, not even seeing if it’s as “bad” as I think... on Christmas morning.I don’t really like Christmas for a variety of reasons and deal with anxiety/seasonal depression on top of it. The last thing I need is to beat myself up over something that no one else is going to fixate on, that doesn’t change my value as a person.I’ve noticed lately that I’ve been spending a lot of energy on my appearance because it’s easier than addressing the beneath-the-surface pain. I’m deciding to let that go today. No drawing attention to the couple of imperfections on my otherwise smooth & clear skin. No complaining about how much weight I’ve gained or how I don’t like the holidays. I’m going to enjoy time with loved ones and put my best self forward. Vulnerability is a beautiful thing.I type this all out because it was a good mini-wake up call for me. I think a lot of us probably spend time scrolling through this subreddit looking for tips on how to perfect ourselves on the outside. Skin care is an awesome hobby and has done wonders for my mental health. And, the “addiction” in SkinCareAddiction can also go a little too far sometimes.Whether you’re celebrating today or not, I hope you are able to be kind to whatever face you are putting forward - this day and every other one!

[PSA] Merry Christmas! Now drop that gift bag!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
At this point, some of the people in your life may have figured out you’re a skincare addict. They love you & wanted to give you something you’d like. So you’ll be opening up gift bags with expensive products, facial care gift sets, etc. This is wonderful, but a dangerous time for an addict. Remember these important steps.Thank them profusely. Always best to be polite, even if they got you St Ives Apricot scrub.Check all of the ingredients. If you’re good at understanding ingredients, get out your magnifying glass and take a look at the ingredients on the label. If not, head on down to www.cosdna.com and see what’s there. If you see anything you’re sensitive to, or if SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol is in the first 5-6 ingredients, then you might want to throw it up on a giveaway site instead of risking your skin.Patch test! Anything you’ve never used should be patch tested before slathering it on your whole face. I do a two stage test: I put things on my chest first, because my skin gets easily irritated there, and anything that will cause an itchy, reddening or hives reaction will happen there if I use products for 2 days. Then, if it’s ok on day 3, I start using on my left jawline, because it’s always looking for an excuse to break out. I use products there for a week before putting it on my whole face. Hopefully, you too have a sensitive zone and an acneic zone to try.Slowly add products. One new product every 2 weeks, unless it's an active, in which case every 4 weeks. I know it means it'll take forever to use your new gift basket, but isn't your skin worth it?Good luck everyone and don't let your holidays be derailed by over excited product use!

[Misc] Friendly reminder to NOT introduce new products directly before the holidays
Beauty Tips For Body Care
If you know you will be attending a big christmas dinner with the whole family and there will be photos taken, don't be like me and try out new products the 2-3 weeks before.I bought the TO Niacinamide + Zinc and after a week of patch testing it on a small portion of my face I got impatient and thought it would be fine to use it all over. Long story short it was not fine, I broke out horribly and attended christmas dinner with the worst skin I had in months. Also bonus points if you have an aunt like I do, who can't shut up about your CrApPy SkIn. 🙃

[Routine Help] How to phase out benzoyl peroxide for Curology?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I've been using benzoyl peroxide (acne.org) for maybe almost 2 years now and up until about 3 months ago, it kept my skin so so clear. I started breaking out again though and benzoyl peroxide just doesn't seem to help as much. It keeps my acne from being as bad as it could be though, but my skin is doing horrible right now since I have so many new PIE spots and active breakouts and purging from AHA use. I signed up for Curology last night and got my prescription (0.25% Zinc Pyrithione, 1% Clindamycin, 4% Niacinamide) and I'm both excited and EXTREMELY nervous. Benzoyl peroxide is the only thing that ever got my skin clear. I'm hoping with Curology, I can completely stop using benzoyl peroxide, I can escape the bleaching of my clothes, simplify my routine, my PIE will fade faster, and I'll save myself from the side effects of BP (irritation, aging, etc.) but I know I can't just stop using benzoyl peroxide cold turkey. How should I phase it out over time? Do I use it less and less per week? Over how long should I take to phase it out?

[Product Question] Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid vs. Gel vs. Lotion - what's the difference and what worked best for your skin type ?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Have you used the Liquid, Lotion or Gel version ? How did it work for you and what is your skin type ?If you have tried more than one version, how were they different and which one worked best for your skin type ?I have acne-prone skin, used to be oily, but seems to have become more normal and sometimes a little bit dry this year (also I hate being sticky or shiny, so I would prefer whichever feels like nothing while still being effective).

[Routine Help] Update after following Wiki advice for 2 years.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
First post in this sub after lurking for the past 2 years! I apologize if I use the wrong terminology. Before: https://imgur.com/a/EoCoer2After: https://imgur.com/a/wnZJjFwI've followed the sub's wiki routine for the past two years, and this is the result. The picture with the hand pinching the nose was my mother 2 years ago, insisting that I had to pop ALL my active acne for it to recover. I caved into her pressure and let her do so.After that horror, I found this sub and followed the routine for the past two years. This is now the result. I can post better pictures if needed, however for the past, my front facing camera was not the best so they're mostly pixelated.Current morning routine:Wash with cetaphilPat down with clean paper towelSunscreen 45+ SPFMoisturize if neededCurrent night routine:Wash with cetaphilPat down with clean paper towelCerave Night Cream*I currently get some acne where I shave, depending on irritation during the shave. This goes away on its own within a couple days. I use a double edged razor, and alum block afterwards.During the two years, I would use Stridex Maximum Strength wipes on my face to target the cystic acne. As of now, I use it less since it's winter and my skin is very dry.Edit 1: formattingMy main concerns:I'm not sure how to improve my skin now; Are there over the counter products that help with scarring? Are those blackheads on my nose? If I try to push out the oil, it's never a fully dried solid oil head (excuse my ignorance if there's another term), but some solid oil filling followed by some oil.If there's anything you believe I am completely missing in terms of my skin care, please let me know!Thank you /r/SkincareAddiction for the routine in the wiki!Without it I'd most likely still be very depressed and feeling helpless with my skincare. Despite my scars, I feel much happier about my skin now.Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about my routine, and how I may improve. Happy Holidays everyone!edit 1: formatting

[PSA] Chemically burned my skin with a prescribed ointment (terbinafine) because the doctor assumed the small red dot on my face was ringworm and didn’t perform any tests to confirm. Reminder to always spot test, even if prescribed from a doctor.

[personal] How do you deal with acne depression?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don’t mean to self-diagnose myself with depression and I’m sorry if I’m not using the right term, but I just don’t know how to express this. Basically how low and down you feel because of your acne. I’m facing the worst skin of my life, been having acne since I was 9 (I’m 18 now), and right now it’s extremely bad and my skin is so bumpy and nothing seems to work. It gets worse when your family members don’t listen to you when you’re talking but they just want to inspect your face. Strangers, especially the elderly, always comment on it and try to give unsolicited advice. And somehow everything you do, from the food you eat to the products you use, or the lack of product you use - that’s the reason why your face is like that. Or when people around you tell you to wash your face and ask you why your face is like that. That’s what people like to blame it on. It’s not like anything you say can magically change my face and it hurts so bad. I’m the type that loves to go out and socialise, but I feel like I’m putting my life on hold. I can’t meet guys because I’m too anxious for dates. I am reluctant to go for interviews and out with friends because of my face. I just wish there was something I could do to make my pimply skin disappear. I hate looking at reflective surfaces to the extent that I increase the brightness of my phone when I’m using it because I don’t wanna see my uneven and horrible skin. I look down everytime I see a mirror in a brightly-lit store. I hate bad lighting, I always cringe and feel everyone’s staring at how bad it is. I cry myself to sleep everyday thinking about my ugly skin. I feel so ugly everyday, I wanna feel pretty. Right now I’m on tretinoin for almost a month and my skin looks worse, hopefully its purging. I know I should probably go see a therapist, but I really can’t afford it at all. How do you guys deal with acne depression, and how do you get out of it? Thank you.
