[Hair Removal] Review of Eflornithine/ Vaniqua facial hair removal cream

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Background:I am a hairy gal. I’ve had a bit of a tash since starting puberty, but in the past few years it’s gotten substantially worse. Before starting this I plucked my facial hair every day and shaved every few days. I have been tested for hormone imbalances and come back with nothing, I’m just hairy. What is it?:Prescription only cream (in the UK at least) for women with excess facial hair growth. Currently only licensed for women who can’t take other treatments, as it is fairly expensive (costs the NHS £56 a bottle). How does it work?:It inhibits an enzyme in the hair shaft to stop it growing properly. It does NOT remove hair that is already there, so it can take up to eight weeks to have an effect. I was told not to get pregnant on it, but I’m not 100% sure why as it doesn’t have any hormones in it. The best I could find in the literature was that there has been some toxicity noted in animal studies so it’s advised not to use while pregnant. My current routine:I don’t have a hugely complicated skincare routine, but I stripped it back to the bare bones before starting this as I was worried it was going to burn my face off.(PM ONLY) Garnier Micellar waterCetaphil gentle cleanserCerave moisturising cream(AM ONLY) Sunsense facial SPF 50The cream itself:It comes in a fairly small nondescript tube- it doesn’t actually say on the tube what it does, so no worries there if you share a bathroom and you’re embarrassed about facial hair. It has a slight medicated smell which is to be expected. It’s a light texture, probably between a light moisturiser and a serum. It initially stings a bit when you put it on, but after a few weeks that went away.I did have difficulty deciding where to put it in my routine, as you’re supposed to use it twice a day. I settled on using it before moisturising, as when I put it on after it would pill horribly when I put on foundation. Results after one week:No effect on hair growth, as expected, but I did start developing a few zits where I wouldn’t usually get them. Annoying but not unbearable, as I get pretty spotty on my lower face from ingrowns anyway. Results after one month:I don’t know if it’s wishful thinking but I think it might actually be working. I stayed away from home for a few days and forgot my tweezers, and it was...fine? Usually I would have a fair teenage boy wispy tash by that point, as well as some thick whiskers on my chin, and for once I didn’t. My skin has cleared up, I’ve also not got as many ingrown hairs as I used to.I did have to stop using the cream for a few days as I developed some eczema on my eyelids as well as some bad angular chelitis in my mouth. I THINK both of these things were unrelated, but I gave my skin a bit of a break. They’ve cleared up now and haven’t happened again even though I’m still using the cream. Results after two months:Okay yeah I am pretty sold on this stuff. I still have facial hair, and at this point have accepted that I probably always will until I get my shit together and save up for laser. That being said, the thick black whiskers are pretty much gone. I shave maybe once a week (a huge improvement on before), and pluck the occasional thick hair every few days (I used to spend a few minutes doing this every single day). The tube has pretty much run out now so I’ve scraped the rest into a pot while I battle with my GP to get another appointment to get more.TLDR: If you’re #blessed with a beard like me I would 100% recommend this cream if you can get access to it. It’s not magic and won’t take it away completely, but it can make it more manageable and less noticeable.
